XPS 13 or a Macbook Air M1 for learning Computer Science at university? Posted: 09 Nov 2021 01:55 AM PST I'm looking for a laptop to use while studying cs which I expect to start in a few months, I prefer the professional and clean design of the two laptops and I don't care much about gaming since I already got a desktop. I've also considered the latest 14" MBP for more ports and a bit bigger screen and the better chip. Though, I'm worried about software compatibility in M1 laptops since I've heard you can't dual boot Windows on an M1 if you have to use it. For the XPS 13, battery life concerns me a bit, the webcam is also underwhelming especially compared to the macbooks. So should I go for the MBA/P or an XPS 13 or other Windows based laptop (SurfaceBook, Lenovo, Asus ... etc)? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Nov 2021 04:20 AM PST Hey, I'm looking for the best value for money laptop that I can carry out music production on - although I'm not anticipating heavy usage of cpu as I recently purchased a dawless setup, so it will mainly be used to record audio in from this with a few touches added Thanks [link] [comments] |
Looking to replace broken Asus Vivobook Posted: 08 Nov 2021 10:29 PM PST LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
$1,500 USD
Prefer new
Device needs to be portable. Under 4 lbs. is ideal, but not required.
14-16 inch (1080p minimum, prefer 2k)
Games: hollow knight, persona (emulator) Programs: minor programming, neuroimaging software suites (some gpu workflows)
Emulator (pcsx2) and hollow knight. 50 FPS minimum.
Prefer sizeable touchpad. Keyboard should be metal or with sturdy switches (too many keys break on me).
I plan to open up the machine a few times to upgrade ram, install SSDs, etc. Because of that, I'd prefer a machine that scores above 7/10 on ifixit. I.e. easy to open back and easy to rescrew, with small chance of ruining components when doing so. Looked a bit, and it seems HP laptops generally score high. Also, prefer team red if can. (Architecture design Laptop) zephyrus m16 or legion 5 pro help choose! Posted: 09 Nov 2021 02:05 AM PST I have been searching for information on the M16 (i7 11800H) and L5P (R7 5800H) but each have their own advantages, so i need you guys to help me decide based on how i will use the laptop. I mainly use programs related to Architecture, maybe i'll try some gaming too, and also for me the look and design is more important than the weight, but then longevity is the most important of all, because I'm hoping for at least 5 years of using the laptop. on the side note: Its either the 3050ti variant for both brands but the L5P has 165hz screen and the M16 has 144hz screen its either those because that's the closest to my budget. Hope you guys can help me choose which one better for my preference. thank you LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRETotal budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: - will purchase in Indonesia, budget less than (25Million IDR / about 1700 US$) Are you open to refurbs/used? - No How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? - in order = Performance > build quality > battery > form factor How important is weight and thinness to you? - need a balance of thinness and performance Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. - Any size above 13" but really wanted to try 16:10 aspect ratio! Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. - Yes, Architectural related and rendering programs. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? - want to try game like RDR2, and SCUM Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? - the requirement is Longevity, since I'm coming from Macbook pro 2012 and still using it to write this post. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Thank you for all who respond to this thread. Budget laptop for 3d animation Posted: 08 Nov 2021 11:38 PM PST LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Preferably around $600-ish but I can squeeze out a total of $700 Are you open to refurbs/used? Sorry no How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Just a laptop, nope, good performance in viewport animation playback or handling a pretty high amount of polygons, nope How important is weight and thinness to you? Not important Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" preferably Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'm mostly doing 3D work, 3D animation in particular. Gonna run maya, blender, sometimes sculpting in zbrush and texture in substance painter If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Lol, valorant,… but I mostly play for fun and I don't care about FPS. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nope nope nope. A backlit keyboard would be nice tho Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm not doing any rendering but I might do some texturing so I would love a display with high color gamut. I'm not gaming much so refresh rate is not important, standard 60hz is fine if it means a lower price. Budget is tight but with black friday coming up I hope to land a good deal. [link] [comments] |
What are the quietest gaming laptops on the market? Posted: 08 Nov 2021 07:48 PM PST So, I want a gaming laptop that's as quiet as possible. Yes I know there's no such thing as a quiet gaming laptop, but I want one that's quietER. I then plan to turn it down into a "silent"/"whisper"/etc mode, ie letting the performance take a hit in order to turn down the fans and whatnot, and hopefully, if the laptop is powerful enough, when in such a state it will still be powerful enough to play games that aren't too demanding, like Minecraft and Overwatch. (Before you ask, no, a desktop is not an option, it must be a laptop. And no, noise-cancelling headphones or other noise-reduction methods are not an option either. Just take my word for it so I can make a long story short, lol.) So what are the quietest gaming laptops on the market, that can have their fans and performance and whatnot customized? I don't need the latest hottest models, models a couple of years old are okay. Just a bunch of names for me to look into would be supremely helpful! Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $2,500 USD (US) Are you open to refurbs/used? No How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Noise level > Performance > Build quality > Everything else How important is weight and thinness to you? I don't care at all Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Must be 17 inches because my eyesight sucks apparently lmao Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Gaming If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I would like it to, in a "quiet" or "whisper" or w/e mode (stuff all turned down), be able to run Minecraft and Overwatch, the two most demanding games I play. (Though, theoretically, Overwatch 2 is going to come out at some point, and it'll probably be more demanding than OW1...) Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I really want a NumPad but I could learn to live without it Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Any thoughts and suggestions whatsoever would help a lot, I'm very stressed about getting a new computer asap because costs are only going to keep going up, but I'm not a techy person and don't know what to do or what to look for :( [link] [comments] |
Any laptops for gaming that isn't a gaming laptop? Posted: 08 Nov 2021 12:25 PM PST NOOB HERE: My son wants a gaming laptop for Christmas for games like Minecraft, Mario, Fortnite, etc. His father offered to buy it for him, but because gaming laptops are more expensive, he's insisting that he is going to buy a regular laptop that has good ram, video card, and processor. He says he wants to spend around $600 (CAD), but I warned him that he's probably not going to be able to find a laptop for that cheap that can run those games smoothly if at all. So, I'm wondering, are there actually any regular laptops that can run these games (and possibly other games as he gets older) smoothly? If not, what suggestions do you have for affordable gaming laptops? LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Looking for a university laptop with a little bit extra Posted: 09 Nov 2021 03:58 AM PST So I already have an HP Envy 13-ba0100ng with which I am quite happy. However, as I'm currently getting flooded in uni with ~200 digital pages of text a week, I'm looking for something that can take notes on those pages. I also would like it to be applicable for drawing. The most important thing is that I don't stumble upon a "damn, I need a better device to do this". I'm a total amateur though, so it doesn't need to be fancy at all. I'd like it better if it's not apple or a Chinese company I'm giving my money to, however if a device from one of those is clearly better than the competition I will take it. I don't have a strict budget limitation, if the feature is useful enough, but I'll give an arbitrary 400-800€ as orientation. [link] [comments] |
My Reminders and Tips for Black Friday / Cyber Monday 2021 Posted: 08 Nov 2021 12:37 PM PST Hi everyone, In the past, I've posted my reminders regarding Amazon Prime Day. Now that Black Friday and Cyber Monday are coming up, I thought it would be best to make another post to help out prospective laptop buyers. Black Friday is coming up on November 26, while Cyber Monday is on November 29. You can expect some deals to continue throughout the weekend between the two events. There are some important points I'd like to get across, plus I will add in more information from my experience tracking laptop deals for a long while.
TL;DR: I will be tracking deals on my Reddit profile, so follow my Reddit profile and keep an eye on my posts. If you have any questions about any deals you see, feel free to ask me. Most importantly, do not overspend! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 08 Nov 2021 11:30 PM PST Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: less than $400 usd. Are you open to refurbs/used? Prefer not to. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? performance is a large priority, otherwise not much, but not unreliable or easily breakable. How important is weight and thinness to you? not important Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14 inches or less (if it's like 14.2 inches that's okay but I do prefer smaller, sometimes I wish my 14 inch laptop was smaller but it's whatever) Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Maybe beam NG drive and forza, not sure if I would actually use it, but stuff like that, at least playable at low settings, and roblox at medium settings (as in the arbitrary bar in the settings tab) with some developing If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Like 25+ fps, but really more when you account for the frame dropping and stuff that will probably happen, 35+ fps if possible in this price range, at low to medium settings. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable keyboard, and reliable everythig pretty much, with a strong cpu, and at least 8 gb of RAM or 4 minimum if it's upgradable to at least 8 gb of RAM, and that it isn't a gateway product. (they seem to be unreliable according to their reviews but I'm going to look into them more than I have.) L eave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Not much, except for thanks! Sorry for poor typing and all that, and I may have messed up the system I am not sure. [link] [comments] |

Looking for a 15 inch laptop with a powerful CPU! Everything else I can add later. 500-650 USD Posted: 08 Nov 2021 10:15 PM PST Hey guys! If anyone has some good recommendations, please let me know. I just want it to have some sort of SSD already in. Even if it's just a 128 GB. And DDR4 slots. Basically I just want the best cpu possible, and a good build. 15-15.6 inch is ideal, as anything lower is just a bit too small. I'm learning to program with it, probably won't be playing any games on it at all. If so, it'll be small little indie games with ridiculously low requirements, on low settings. If you have any ideas for a powerful CPU laptop in the 500-650 range, I'd appreciate it so much! Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Help buying a cheap laptop for work and youtube Posted: 09 Nov 2021 01:12 AM PST the laptop questionnaire: -the budget cant exceed 30000UAH (~1000USD) -Im not open to refurbs -I prioritize build quality and battery life over performance -since I dont need it to perform well I would also want it to be thin and lightweight -the preferred screen size is 1920x1080(but it can be higher) -Im not going to do any cpu/gpu heavy tasks on the laptop (mostly running chrome or vs code) I currently have a gaming msi ge75 raider(the gtx1060 version), I bought it around a year ago when I didnt have a gaming pc yet, but now I dont use the laptop for gaming anymore and it weights too much and the battery dies too quickly for just taking it out to a cafe or chilling on bed with it. I want to sell it and buy a new laptop that wouldnt necessarily have an insane cpu or a gpu but the one that has a good battery life and is sturdy(preferably with a metal body), I thought about buying some version of macbook pro but it feels like its too overpriced, what could be a good option? Wanted to buy a laptop for college and am confused between two laptops Posted: 08 Nov 2021 10:01 PM PST Hello there! I wanted to buy a laptop for college for engineering. I wanted to do some coding, and some other stuffs like every other student does. I wanted to buy hp pavilion laptop but it has a small 43 whr battery hence has mediocre battery life. It has ryzen 5 5500u processor and a mediocre 250 nits 45 % NTSC screen. Also isn't as sturdy. Then I saw Lenovo Legion 5 laptop worth few thousand rupees more with GTX 1650, same screen and 60 whr battery which works more or less same with same programs open and some optimization and also an option of upgrading to 80 whr battery provided we remove HDD. It has better upgradeability and better build quality though it's around 800-900 gms heavier than pavilion. I will live in the college's hostel and don't see the weight as problem. Also I won't game at all but I may want to learn creating animations through blender if I get time in college. I have quite a bit interest in learning blender but don't know my love is genuine or short time lust :) Thus I may prefer to be at a safer side. Also you can provide me better options than these but acc to whatever I have researched, whichever I found better than pavilion is non upgradeable (like IdeaPad slim series and the 16 gb version is not worth the money spent) or is not a reputed brand in India like acer or msi. Also if you find any info missing I'm ready to provide it. LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Looking for a well-built, portable laptop for university studies and photo editing Posted: 08 Nov 2021 05:43 PM PST LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Hey all, I'm in Australia and $1000 AUD is my budget. Could maybe go to $1100 depending on the laptop. Are you open to refurbs/used? Potentially if only used minimally, but I'd prefer new. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? build quality > battery life > performance > form factor How important is weight and thinness to you? It needs to be portable and fit in my backpack along with everything else. My old one was 1.42kg and 19.9mm thick which was fine. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Don't mind about the screen specifically, but would want the the whole thing to be around 12-13 inches long similar to my old one. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No gaming - I mainly plan to do web browsing, watch videos, online meetings and word processing. That said, I would like it to handle drawing and photo editing on Photoshop, and/or other similar programs. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality is essential, good input devices would be awesome. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This would mostly be used for university studies at the moment, but I'm keen to buy something that would last for longer. The laptop this will be replacing was a Lenovo ThinkPad (no touch) that lasted 7 years. It survived being taken to high school and then uni frequently in a backpack and even straight-out dropped a couple of times. I'd be happy to get another Lenovo but want to know my options overall. Just would love to have something that would last the same amount of time, being taken too and from different places. Finally, it would be nice if the laptop was one I could get in store here, so I could get feel for it in person before spending the money. [link] [comments] |

Best bang for my buck for remote work? Posted: 08 Nov 2021 05:02 PM PST I'm sure y'all are tired of this sort of post so apologies in advance. My budget is whatever. No need for touch screen or much storage (128 gb SSD would be more than enough). Windows, prefer 14-15.3. Remote work, "intensive" word processing, occasional streaming. Prefer 6 gb ram but more is welcome. Don't care about resolution or fancy sound and don't need any bells or whistles. Gaming isn't a concern, just a workhorse. A decent battery is preferable. I haven't been in the market in a decade but I liked Asus and Toshiba back when I used to sell these things, though that isn't a requirement. Planning on buying tonight or tomorrow. Edit: Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Don't care. Don't want trash and willing to spend for quality. Are you open to refurbs/used? No How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance, build, battery. How important is weight and thinness to you? As much as the next guy. Smaller the better. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 14-15.3 preferably Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Nope. Word, teleconferencing nonsense. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nope. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Nope. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Thanks for your help. [link] [comments] |
Getting a new laptop but don’t know where to start. Help? Posted: 08 Nov 2021 04:53 PM PST I graduated from a great entrepreneurship focused school and my dad is starting a business. I don't have a computer since my last one crapped out. So to help him with his pitch deck, business plan and financial deck to raise money - he's offering to buy me a computer. A laptop would be most convenient for me as I don't have much space for a desktop. Any suggestions on what I should get? Edit: I'm in the US budget is probably around 2k performance is important to me I'd love to be able to mine crypto on it when I'm done with this project. Weight and thinless aren't important. Standard screen size preferably. [link] [comments] |
