Why do I have to type twice to get the tilde on Windows?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 12:40 PM PDT

As the title says, why do I have to press "alt gr + 4" twice to get the tilde char "~". Is really annoying specially when I work on wsl and I try to cd to my home directory. My keyboard layout is "English (United States) - Spanish".

I think Windows Vista is one the Best versions of windows

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 03:56 PM PDT

I'm not kidding, Aero looked awesome and when you had a computer with the right specs, vista was smooth. The only reasons people had problems was because of Nvidia's shoddy drivers, People using less than 2gb of ram & Old windows 95 machines. There's just No contest, Vista, 7 & XP are the best versions of windows.

Originally on the fence, decided against upgrading due to Alder Lake requiring Win 11..

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 06:05 PM PDT

I'm still running 8700k @ 5.1 GHz actual (0 AVX, delid, 1200w rad surface area shared between CPU and RTX 3090, load temps of 65C max at 1.38v) and at 5120x1440 (Samsung Odyssey G9 Neo) the only games I'm currently CPU necked in I can count on maybe one hand: Watch Dogs Legion, XCOM 2 come most readily to mind, with RTX 3090 under water block with a healthy undervolt.

I like to orient my task-bar to the left of the screen as vertical resolution is at a premium on this panel. I have no idea how they allowed this regression where we are forced to only use the task-bar on the bottom with Win 11. Additionally, I have very little desire to replumb new hard-tubing. Mostly though, as a power user I have so many tweaks that I can't even remember them all and have no desire to start from scratch with Windows 11 which in my opinion, doesn't offer anything new and seems like a regression compared to 10 in nearly every aspect, right down to the UI elements.

I have an EK water-block on pre-order but I think I'm going to cancel.

The final nail in the coffin for this idea to upgrade was running Guardians of the Galaxy at 90-100 FPS maxed out (RT Reflections Very High and DLSS Balanced) with no CPU bottleneck to speak of (GPU utilization at 99% throughout).

Ah yes, I just remembered I have a CPU bottleneck in Red Dead Redemption 2 when I visit Strawberry but GPU utilization is still around 85% (~65 FPS).

I can't justify this upgrade. But the primary reason is that I really just don't want to "upgrade" from Win 10 to 11 to use 12900k. Additional thoughts, I'm not thrilled with the apparent teaming up exclusivity partnership between Microsoft and Intel. Seems like money was involved and this is an act of desperation on the part of Intel. Looking forward to seeing what AMD has up their sleeve with Infinity Fabric in a few months, an upgrade that won't require "upgrading" to Win 11.

Missing Drivers when trying to install Windows

Missing Drivers when trying to install Windows

I am trying to install Windows 10 on my new Lenovo Thinkpad E14 gen 3. I have a bootable USB hocked up.

Does anyone know, how I can fix this? I tried to connect a USB drive with the drivers from lenovo.com but it couldn't find the drivers on the USB.

A Media driver your computer needs is missing. This could be a DVD, USB, or Hard disk driver. If you have a CD, DVD, or USB flash drive with the driver on it, please insert it now. Note: If the installation media for Windows is the DVD drive or on a USB drive, you can safely remove it for this step.

Windows user since day 1, Apple is making my "religion" shiver

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 05:19 AM PDT

So I have only been using x86 Windows computers since Windows 3, and I need to replace my 8 years old Dell laptop. I'd like to stay on Windows, however the M1 switch from Apple is so impressive in terms of performance and battery life that, Apple is tempting. The HP Spectre 14 seems to be a good contender, but specs are far behind any M1 model, and battery life is poor when using OLED version...No point in getting an IPS panel from HP which historically has been rubbish.

How the heck did we get here? RISC limits are well known, but maybe Microsoft should have started thinking about x86 alternatives long ago. Now they think about ARM.

When are we getting M1 performance on Windows PCs?

Full encryption (Windows and linux) on two SSD

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 03:41 PM PDT

    Hello everybody,

I hope it's the correct place to ask the following since it's also related to windows.

If I want a windows only laptop with full encryption I could install windows on the SSD with veracrypt.

And if I want a Linux only laptop I could install (any distro) on the SSD with LUKS.

Now I want to have a dual boot with both Windows and Linux and I thought that the easiest way could be to simply do the above (with two separate disks) and each OS fully encrypted and that I can choose which system to boot into using the BIOS multiboot menu selecting the correct drive.

But I'm not sure that this will work. I heard that veracrypt is not allowing to have multiple drives..

How can I dual boot with two disks?

Thank you very much for any direction or comments.

    Windows live gallery

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 03:04 PM PDT

If this has been asked before then I apologize but recently one of my laptops went through some weird update and now it is completely junk. It didn't quite update all the way or something? All of my photos that were stored into my windows live gallery are completely gone😮. The things that I had in there for at least the last 10 years maybe and now they're just gone? In this update it hit didn't do nothing but screw up everything? I can't even get it now to go back to a previous version. Has anyone else had a problem similar to this?

Can I make Windows automatically use integrated graphics when on battery or USB-PD?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 03:02 PM PDT

I have Windows 11 on a Lenovo Legion 5 Pro AMD laptop with a GTX 3060 discrete GPU. When I'm not gaming and the 3060 is turned off, it uses Radeon integrated graphics. A 100W USB-PD power supply is plenty to keep it charged, and even on battery it lasts a good long time.

Problem is, if I then launch a game - even something which performs passably on integrated graphics - it uses the 3060, which consumes more power than USB-PD can provide. It switches over to battery and quickly eats up the charge. It seems that Windows's decision of "should I use the discrete GPU for this app?" is based on "is it a game?" and not "do I have enough power available?" Yes, I could go into System>Display>Graphics and manually change the game from High Performance to Power Saving each time, and then change it back when I'm using the huge power brick, but that's a hassle.

I would like Windows to be smart enough to see that I am not using the huge power brick and to therefore not use the power-hungry 3060 GPU. Is there any way (within Windows, or a third-party app) to automate this?

Windows shuts down if unplugged after hibernation.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 02:43 PM PDT

My custom PC would wakeup and turn on if I hibernate or event shut down after the day's work. To counter this I have started unplugging it but now when I turn it on, it doesn't start off from where I left it after hibernating. Is there some kind of phantom power being received when hibernate is being used?

How much does McAfee pay to preinstall it

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 04:47 AM PDT

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but I am curious to know how OEMs manufacturers make from pre-installed software. How does this affect product pricing.

Does McAfee pay them everytime a license is purchased or does McAfee pay them for every preinstall. And how much is paid? Any idea?

Wanted to know how this affects pricing. I have seen this stuff bringing down smartphone prices for many Chinese phones.

Can't hide user from log in menu?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 07:23 AM PDT

I bought a refurbished PC with Windows 10.

When creating new users (two, both with admin privileges, and that's all I need), I must have made some kind of mess.

Now, when I switch the PC on, it automatically logs into a User account (Utente, in Italian), saying "incorrect user name or password" -- see evidence 1 and evidence 2.

This is weird, because nor on the start menu -- see evidence 3 -- or on the control panel -- see evidence 4 -- or when I try to switch from one account to the other -- see evidence 5 -- the phantom User account is showing.

In lusrmgr, all the accounts that are not the two main ones are disabled -- see evidence 6. I've also tried to delete them, but it says they are default accounts and I can't do that.

    What gives? It's super annoying!

    Thanks in advance :)

    Looking for specific screenshot tool.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 01:14 PM PDT

I used to take screenshots with the build in save function of OneDrive. It's great for taking fast screenshots but it lacked some functionality so I switched to ShareX.

Only one problem, compared to the build in option its terribly slow. Taking a screenshot has at least .5 second delay and between every capture there is at least 1 second delay. For someone who captures a lot from live video I need something much faster. I looked for alternatives but they all seem to either lack functionality or are too slow.

So my question, does anybody know a tool with high capture speed and similar customization like ShareX, Greenshot, etc? Main functions I need are capture region, custom file name and proper hotkey binding.

Windows 11 was good, but still going back

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 01:08 PM PDT

Windows 11 was an interesting 3 days, Started well Enjoyed the UI

And everything was fine until the bugs. Oh god the bugs

Ranging from Black screening resulting in the OS freezing up and losing all response until inevitably crashing to Random crashes of all sorts of apps

It's been pure misery and my final day was me wrestling with it like a dog on a leash to stop ruining my stuff.

In the end. Wasn't worth the time. But when it's actually fleshed out, I'll be willing to come back to it.
