Moved into an apartment with networking. I don't know where to start to make it work.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 10:54 AM PDT

I recently moved into an apartment with walled networking. In each bedroom room and in the living room, there's outlet for cable, phone and ethernet. I want to take advantage of the ethernet wall jacks, but they don't seem to be working. I took a peak at the panel and I'm really not sure what to make of it, what to look for, what to fix, etc. I searched similar posts but it seems it might be best to just share a photo of my panel.

My intent is to plug the router into the walled port in the living room and having the bedrooms be able to get wired internet from their respective wall ports.

Photo of networking panel. It looks like the white cables are phone and blue are ethernet, but other than that, no clue.

No power to junction box -Comcast xfinity

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 06:13 PM PDT

Moving into a new apartment. Called Comcast and set up an account; they gave me a modem. Hooked the modem up to the coaxial cable, and it doesn't work. We think the problem is that there's no power to this junction box because the power light doesn't come on: https://imgur.com/a/32SKpjK?s=wa

At this point I'm trying to find out if it's something I can fix, something the condo has to fix, or something Comcast has to fix. Previous tenants moved out last week and it was working fine for them.

    Asus Zen Wifi 3 pack vs 3 x Eero 6 wi-fi routers?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 06:11 PM PDT

I am putting a TV / PS5 on the main floor which currently gets very poor wi-fi coverage.

The cable modem & router are on the second floor and there is cat 5 going to third floor. It is difficult to put in cat 5 directly from from 2nd floor router to 1st floor as directly below 2nd floor are neighbor's units that I cant drill into. So I thought of using a wifi mesh system as seen in this pic. the items in red is what I want to add. My friend is saying to just add a range extender instead

    https://imgur.com/a/tDjKxBG

    Questions are:

would a simple range extender suffice?

which would be better, 3 x Eero 6 wi fi routers or a Asus Zenwifi XD4 3 pack? They are both around the same price. As you can see from the pic, each wifi mesh node would require a ethernet port.

I also wan to keep the existing linksys router as is, and just connect the new wifi mesh system to this router, in order to extend it to the 1st floor

Will FTP server be "just fine" for transferring files between 2 devices over home network?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 11:13 AM PDT

So basically, I am in constant need to transfer files from phone to my laptop. Till now, I used to do it via USB cable. However it's very inconvenient to connect/disconnect my phone every time I want to transfer a small file.

Someone recommended me to set up FTP server on phone, connect laptop and phone to the network, and transfer the files. And it works like a charm! But I also read up that FTP transfer can be easily snooped and intercepted, and not really secure!

    My question:

    • Will FTP be alright if I am just using it over my home network for local transfer of files?
    • The files aren't super sensitive data but I wouldn't want get it snooped either!

    • Can someone from the internet intercept the ftp transfer, or do they need to be on the same network as me to intercept it?

I am very new to this, so I would appreciate your help!!

SMF or MMF fiber for home network

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 04:31 PM PDT

In my home network I am doing 3 fiber runs (going to run it at my workstation and my lab), less than 100 ft each, running fiber patch cables in conduits (that were used for phone wires), from a keystone patch panel to some keystone wall plates, using LC keystone adapters. I was wondering whether I should use Single Mode (OS1 or OS2?) or Multi Mode (OM3 or OM4?) fiber. As of right now my equipment supports 10Gbps, but I would like to be future proof. I am aware that if I were to go with Single mode I might have to spend a bit more but it's just 3 relatively short runs (not a data center) so it doesn't really matter. Also, will I have issues with really short cables (e.g. 5ft or less, to connect it from the patch panel to the switch, or from the wall jack to my workstation) with either SMF or MMF? Thanks!

    Terrible ping with Fiber optic!

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 10:23 AM PDT

I am a gamer, not that tough gamer but I play for about 2 to 3 hours a day. High ping was and is still a nightmare for me. it just ruins online games no matter how good you are. So a couple of days ago, I upgraded my internet to fiber optic from Proximus. The first game I started to play after upgrading was PUBG. I faced terrible and unstable ping. It goes up to 600ms and down to 300ms insanely on both pubg mobile and steam! Every second it just goes up and downs with a huge difference and makes games lugging and not fun to play at all. Any tips, advice, or solutions based on experience is very appreciated 🙇

    New Router Same SSID+Password

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 06:19 PM PDT

I have an arris surfboard and I'm trying to replace it with a Netgear Nighthawk modem/router.

I can get it to work but as soon as I change the password to match my old password (in hopes for everything to connect without having to be reset) the router just stop working. I have restarted the router forgot the network from my phone and my computer but after I change the password I can only connect to the router, no internet.

The only thing I can do to get it working again is factory reset.

Any ideas what might be going on?

    Network card resets to 100/100

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 05:48 PM PDT

Hey guys as the title states I'm having a strange issue with my network. I have a gigabit connection and when I boot up my computer I get speeds I'd expect and according to device manager my network is 1000/1000. Then after a few minutes it will disconnect and then tell me I'm 100/100 and my speed is limited accordingly.

I've updated the drivers, uninstalled and re installed the network card. All of the hardware supports the gigabit connection and over wifi I get speeds faster than the wired connection when buggy.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be going on? I'll list devices I use below.

Fibre to the premises connection 1 G/bit Deco m5 mesh router x 2 Gigabit 4 port network switch Gigabit network card tp link TG-3468

    Thanks for any help

    Networking newbie, please help!

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 05:39 PM PDT

Hi! This is my first post here but is seems like im in the right place.

I am moving to a new home and getting AT&T fiber. Since for whatever reason att doesn't have a bridge mode on their router/modem gateway, I'm trying to figure out the best way to take advantage of my Asus AC5300U. I was going to use IP pass through but I know that's not ideal.

Question 1: if I use IP pass through and DMZ+ to bypass the ATT firewall am I still safe from attacks as long as I use the firewall on my Asus router?

Question 2: would it be better to configure the ATT network and then use the Asus AC5300 as an access point? Does it work like that? What happens to the extra 5ghz band on the Asus router, is it usesless?

    Thanks!

    Home setup recommendation

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 05:16 PM PDT

    Looking for recommendations.

I've setup various systems for offices, like PfSense and OpnSense routers with Aruba Instant Access Points, but my home has different requirements and issues.

    1) I can only run ethernet cables to a few key spots inside 2) I currently have dead zones with my single cheap TP Link router 3) I wish to extend Wi-Fi into my large back yard 4) I would like end points to take advantage of my gigabit internet as much as possible 5) Would like Wi-Fi 6, I don't care about 6E, but but not opposed 6) Not a fan of Ubiquiti 7) Target budget <$1K 8) I would like a system with minimal latency

Also what's the deal with 4x4 Wi-Fi 6 and 2x2 etc? Last setup I did was with 802.11ac, so I seen a little out of touch with 802.11ax.

I was originally thinking Aruba Instant 22s with an OpnSense router, then I stumbled onto Asus X8 mesh and A11000 gaming router which has 4x4 radios, but I'm hesitant on reliability.

    Thoughts? Recommendations?

    Looking For Recommendation

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 05:11 PM PDT

Hello there everyone, so I haven't made network cables since I was in high school and never needed to create them as I could just buy the already made cables which have been working out until now.

I am trying to install some UniFi APs (PoE Powered) around the house and the holes that I have created, well then are not big enough and the only way to get what I want is to pass the cable through the hole and crimp the connectors myself. I am willing to try and learn and hopefully master the art of creating my own network cables.

So I would like to get some recommendations when it comes to the following. Below is what has been gathered so. Thank you for your time and help with this request.

    1. Cat6 Cable
    2. Passthrough Connector
    3. Crimp Tool
    4. Cable Tester

Point to Point link question - no network out of receiver-end switch/wifi router

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 02:46 PM PDT

It must be something fundamentally simple... I've set up a ptp system as per the attached diagram.

    https://i.imgur.com/j0wOauQ.png

At the receiver side, if the LAN cable out of the POE injector is connected to a laptop, it works wonders, however if it's plugged into the WAN port of a 4g wifi router, and laptop is further downstream plugged into the router it won't work.

(not used a switch on purpose as don't plan to have a separate AP added, but leverage the wifi capability of the router, and it happened to be a 4g one)

I first thought the 2 routers had the same IP and conflicted but that wasn't the case.

Am I to put the the one on the RX side on the same .8 subnet?

What is it I'm forgetting to set on the 4g router?

    Thanks in advance!

    Help with PingPlotter results

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 08:13 PM PDT

Hello, i've been experiencing ping spikes in games like valorant from time to time for a long time now.

Today i found out about PingPlotter and WinMTR

I've read about it and watched some tutorials and stuff

a website said i should put my IPv4 as a target, but when i did that i got basically nothing as a result:

    https://i.imgur.com/PEaAJtI.png

After that i've read that i should try to use Googles Public DNS which is 8.8.8.8

after i did that i got different results but i don't really understand what it means

https://i.imgur.com/8X25SeH.png (results after normal desktop activity and also some valorant gaming)

A little more information about my situation:

I live in a small village in germany and my internet isn't the best, i have some type of hybrid LTE + DSL Mix Solution provided by "Deutsche Telekom"

    My Normal Internet is:

    16.000 Download

    2000 Upload

But through the help of LTE/Hybrid with a Sim Card in my "Telekom Speedport Hybrid" Router i can get upto 50.000 Download and 10.000 Upload

The problem is that LTE causes a high ping in general so whenever i play this feature is completly deactivated on my router.

    I use a Wireless Connection through a Repeater "TP-Link RE200 WLAN Repeater"

I also have a "TP-Link TL-PA4010 KIT Powerline Adapter" at home because i wanted to test it but it never really worked so far, its either is really slow, has disconnects or doesnt connect at all, its not really reliable for me so far.

A Wired Connection/Ethernet is impossible because i would need to drill a hole in the ceiling which i'm not allowed to.

I hope someone can help me with my issue, its really annoying

    Thanks in advance.

Novice-level Wifi APs to enable multi-AP gigabit wifi coverage inside/outside home (wired backhaul)?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 12:42 PM PDT

Hello! I searched for recent posts trying to find recommended access points but a lot of posts I found either were for different scenarios or required a lot of extra IT skills/infrastructure I don't have.

I have a ~1700 sqft single-floor ranch-style home with FIOS Gigabit ethernet. Current home network is using the (purchased) FIOS Quantum home router, with a lot of Ca6 6 wired clients at both ends of the house for speed and reliability.

The only current Wifi AP is the centrally-located G1100 itself and it works fine in most areas of the house; however, if you're outside, even near the house, or in the garage or other extreme end of the house, even the 2.4 Ghz connection can start to get spotty. While we have a few mobile devices that use the wifi we move around, the biggest issues is on the cell phones as the cell signal is practically non-existent in our area and wifi is crucial for calls and texts.

I'm looking to get 2 or 3 Wifi APs that I will be able to cable back to the FIOS modem (using a handful of unmanaged switches with 50-75 ft cat 6 cables) to hopefully allow seamless 5Ghz wifi usage everywhere in the house, as well as when outside in the driveway or yard. Initial thought it 1 AP at each end of the house which should ideally be able to cover the center of the house where we typically are, and still enable wifi access out into the yard. A third one would be if needed to fill in any gap between the two.

I looked into Unifi a bit to see if I can just drop an AP or two and call it a day, but searching recent posts in /r/HomeNetworking seemed to mention that Unifi wifi speeds were poor or required some sort of subscription or separate management software if using more than 1 AP. Other posts started recommending a variety of different HomeNetwork setups that quickly spiraled out of the basic network knowledge I have.

Is there a simple recommended solution for setting up a multi-AP wired backhaul wifi network, or would it be to my benefit to do the work to start learning some more advanced home networking solutions/concepts?

    Thanks!

Any recommendations on a patch panel that can be recessed into the wall?

Trying to eliminate dead zone in home office

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 07:38 PM PDT

    Hi,

I have approx 90 square meters apartment that is mostly pretty good covered with Asus RT-AC6P apart from one room which is unfortunately my home office.

See the attached image, router can be connected only in the place marked up (no Ethernet sockets anywhere else) and between this and dead zone the are two thin load-bearing walls.

I've been looking into expanding network with mesh wifi, although I'm quite worried that these two walls will also weaken mesh signal significantly. There's one socket in the corridor, though which might do the trick (marked on image as well).

Are there any other options I can look into? Will two (base and satellite) mesh devices be enough (considering that in the rest of apartment, on the right, signal is really good)?

I am especially worried that getting read of my current router and replacing it with only two mesh devices will weaken signal in the right side of the apartment.

    Any advice?

Was looking into Devolo Magic Wifi for powerline but these devices seem a little too big to fit into technical box, since they go directly into socket :/

    Wifi extender for smart bulbs

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 01:19 PM PDT

Recently purchased some cheap smart bulbs from Costco ( 2 pack for $10) for the outside of garage. Main purpose is scheduled power (turn on at night, off during day)

Issue is that the connection isn't strong enough to hold a stable consistent connection, so its hit or miss on if they're connected during the scheduled times.

I currently have a Nighthawk AC36000, should a wifi extender remedy this situation? and any recommendations for one?

I know there's probably better smart bulb options, but only reason im going with this is because of the price.

    Thanks!

Normal Speed DSL to NID Test Jack; Slower Inside?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 07:10 PM PDT

The DSL has gotten slower over the past several weeks.

It appears to be a line issue inside and may be something simple.

DSL is running full speed to the NID Test Jack outside. From where the wires split and go inside to the wall jack is when the trouble starts.

Is it possible to receive full speed at the test jack on the splitter/filter in the NID but where the wires split to go inside the house the splitter itself is faulty? If that's possible, could I test that by cutting both RJ45 connectors off a Cat5, running the bare wires to the splitter at the NID and crimping on a RJ11 plug to the other side and hooking that directly to the modem?

I'm confident everything at the NID is done correctly, just wasn't sure if the splitter in the NID could be at fault.

Here is a picture of the NID.

    https://www.flickr.com/photos/190315085@N08/51639253822/in/dateposted/

On the other side of the wall where the NID is mounted there are two wall jacks next to each other. When things were first setup, the tech said he'd wire the left jack for phone, and the right jack for DSL.

Here are the two wall plates.

    https://www.flickr.com/photos/190315085@N08/51640934295/in/dateposted/

Here is the inside of the left jack.

    https://www.flickr.com/photos/190315085@N08/51640929440/in/dateposted/

Here is the inside of the right jack.

    https://www.flickr.com/photos/190315085@N08/51639248217/in/dateposted/

Another bit of information, the modem downstream and upstream rates are reporting correctly within the modem's configuration pages with the modem placed outside hooked directly to the NID Test Jack and also when inside hooked to the wall jack, the speed is just much slower inside.

Is there something that would allow me to connect to a wall jack and check all the RJ11 jacks at once including the wiring through the walls to narrow down where the fault is in this instance?

Any thoughts on how best to proceed and what equipment I should be using to diagnose the issue so I can get this resolved?

    Thanks!

More information below and updates as I continue to troubleshoot this issue.

    • I did call support and they had me try some basic solutions, reboot the modem, factory reset the modem, but neither helped.
    • Wireless signal transmission is the same as wired, slow speed inside.
    • Ethernet cabling and DSL modem cable pass without issue using a Klein tester.
    • The modem trains at nearly the same both inside and out at the NID, approximately 6+ Mbps.
    • No FEC corrections nor any CRC errors at all.
    • DSL is only going to one jack.
    • I popped the plastic clips up for the pair of twisted orange wires marked modem on the splitter at the NID then reinserted them fully into the connection holes reattaching the plastic plug clamps down. The results are the same.
    • This is basic DSL, not bonded.
    • Modem SNR Downstream 6.1 dB (this has also dropped to 5.8 dB and the Internet stops inside), Upstream 20.0 dB; Modem Attenuation Downstream 40.0 dB, Upstream 24.8 dB; Modem Power Downstream 19.4 dBm, Upstream 12.1 dBm; Modem Error Packets Downstream 106018805, Upstream 0
    • I've now removed the wall jack wired for DSL, cut off and stripped both phone wires and reinstalled them to a new wall jack I picked up at a big box store today, same result.

Should the two sets (blue and orange) of twisted pair wires which enter the house at the splitter in the NID be stripped before they're inserted into the plastic plugs which clamp down on them? I did not strip and expose any wiring when inserting them into the holes.

I was hoping there might be a testing device available on the market I could hook up that would easily tell me where and how far the fault lies.

    Chromecast Guest Network Issues

    Posted: 01 Nov 2021 07:09 PM PDT

I recently started securing my home network by turning off uPnP, and hiding my SSID. I now have a guest network. I tried to connect the Chromecast to the guest network and it doesn't seem to be working.

Is it secure to host it on my actual network? I believe I can use guest mode to cast to it from the guest network, but I am afraid it's a flaw.

Also, any advice on how to connect Chromecast to the guest network, alternatives, or troubleshooting ideas would be appreciated.
