Professional Video Editing & Gaming Laptop

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 08:57 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase.
      $1500 tops, I think. Prefer around $1K.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes. As long as refurbished won't affect performance in serious way.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Don't care about 2-1 tablet feature as I'm not an illustrator. Performance matters the most, battery life I'm agnostic on as I'm typically plugged in while working.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Prefer durability over thinness/light.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
No hard preference, currently have 13in. Preferably no smaller than that given video editing.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming?
Yes, I use Adobe Premiere primarily for my professional practice. And often run multiple Creative Suite programs at once for multitasking.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Basically, I want to be able to run contemporary games like Syberia 4 but it doesn't have to be at 60fps at some insane resolution. It just has to run it smoothly and preferably not be something I have to seriously replace until 5-10 years from now.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
    • HDMI out is useful for both editing and gaming. One criticism I have of my current M1 Macbook Pro is there aren't sufficient ports for different contexts, meaning lots of adaptors are needed. I'd prefer to have a variety of ports available for various needs. Many of the Lenovo machines seem to have a decent variety of ports.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Basically I want a machine that I can still have my professional practice on, but also run classic and contemporary games on (Parallels on Macbook virtualizes the GPU and is quite poor performance). This may even become a gamedev machine eventually as I want to learn more about Unity and Unreal, 3D modeling etc. An adventure game company is a personal life dream of mine.

HELP!!! Cord Crazy!!! Recommend a laptop, hub, and monitors so I can run a pile of stuff, at least two monitors, on as few cords as possible?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 11:59 AM PST

So, I currently run a gaming laptop, two 1080P 27" monitors via HDMI, one with a DisplayPort Adaptor, and a small USB hub connected by USB C (probably only 2.0).

I used to have a laptop with a docking station, that was nice, but not many manufacturers are still making them. I take my laptop home every night, and back to work every day. Since I don't have a dedicated workstation at the office, and I'm on the road a lot, having multiple PC's and putting everything in the cloud isn't the ideal solution.

I do some video editing, occasionally enjoy some PC gaming, and would consider myself an internet/Office365 Power User.

I'm thinking it's time for a new laptop (Current Laptop Runs an i7-8750H, GTX1060, 16GB RAM, SSD, Win 10 Pro. Would prefer something about 15" slim, portable, decent battery life. My current rig is a gaming rig, and it's "fine" but I'd really prefer something sleeker/more professional.

Not switching to Apple. Don't need 4k monitors, although it would be nice.

Would it be possible to run everything I need off of a charging cable and single USB-C port?

    Any thoughts? Any Questions?

    Thinkpad P1 Gen 4 vs. Asus M16?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 09:43 AM PST

Wondering how these compare in terms of build quality and features for general use, light gaming, and future-proofing. I'm looking at somewhat similar configurations:

    M16: i9-11900H, 16 GB, RTX3060, 1TB SSD

    P1: i7-11850H, 32 GB, A3000, 1TB SSD

Anyone have experience with both models/brands?

[SQ] Are there any Big developments worth waiting for in the near future?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 07:39 AM PST

I know that there will always be something better in the horizon when it comes to technology, so it doesn't make sense to keep waiting forever for the next best thing. However, I think everyone will agree that occasionally there are big improvements that are worth waiting for before purchasing a new laptop. For example, if someone in November of 2020 wanted to buy a Macbook, you would definitely tell them to wait for the new M1 models.

With that in mind, are there any significant technological jumps coming down the pipeline?

Need input on two choices. Thinkbook 14p Gen 2 5800H/16gb or Thinkpad T14s Gen 2 5850U/32gb?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 01:06 AM PST

I have the Thinkbook and the Thinkpad is on the way. Which to return… 🤔

Use for Office work, homework, internet, light pc gaming and emulation. Want good battery life too. Upgrading from a Latitude 7490 i5 8350u/16gb.

** Screen resolution isn't a big deal to me.

    1. Say price doesn't matter… which would be better longer? Keep resale value?

    2. Say price does matter… is the Thinkpad worth $260 more? Why or why not?

    3. Opinion: is 5850u with 32gb a better option than 5800H and 16gb? 4266 is faster than 3200 right? How comparable are these chips? Is the U just an underclocked H?

    Thinkbook 14p Gen 2 ($840) - 14.0" 2.2K (2240 x 1400) IPS, anti-glare with Dolby Vision™, 300 nits - 5800H - 16 GB DDR4 3200MHz (Soldered) - 512 GB

    Thinkpad T14s Gen 2 ($1100) - 14.0" FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS, anti-glare, touchscreen with Privacy Guard, 500 nits - Ryzen 7 Pro 5850U - 32 GB LPDDR4X 4266MHz (Soldered) - IR 720p webcam - 1 TB

    Thoughts? Thanks.

    Development laptop

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 08:50 AM PST

I need to update my laptop and i would like to get as much CPU power i can, allong side with sufficient RAM. I suppose 16 or 32GB Ram is ok. I would like to spend around 2000, max 2400.

I have seen this Dell laptop that seems very good, the only downside is the screen, its not IPS.

    Dell Latitude 5521 (i7-11850H/32GB/512GB/FHD/W10 Pro)

Workstation, 15.6" 1920x1080, CPU: Intel Core i7 2.5GHz, RAM: 32GB, 512GB SSD, GPU: Intel Iris Xe Graphics, Windows 10 Pro

I haven't checked the AMD CPUs yet. I don't know how they compare with the i7-11th gen.

Do you have any laptop suggestion for me?

For gaming I play on all low, I have school for 8hrs, no gamer aesthetic is a must. If a 600 dollar laptop or 700 dollar laptop has these minimum requirements then please recommend that, don't want to go to 800 unless necessary. Fast SSD or M.2 SSD required.

Need a recommendation from someone who knows what they are talking about

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 11:42 AM PST

    Hi there everyone:

I am looking to buy a new laptop for a combination of personal use and work related activities. I am a cyber security engineer so I often require high power and RAM capacity especially if I am running virtual machines in the background. Here is a loose list of requirements, perhaps someone can take this and offer some appropriate options:

    1. Strong and sturdy and relatively compact, roughly 15". As I will be travelling and working alot.
    2. Good battery life, this is very important. I need decent battery life as often I will be travelling and may not always have immediate power available/charge source.
    3. Relatively quiet and does not run hot, I need a laptop that is not known for sound issues and running very hot with heavy intensive workloads. Obviously this will occur to some degree but perhaps some suggestions on which ones are better than others. (I have been told spectre x360 has this issue, have I been led astray?)
    4. Can handle heavy workloads, I often will run at least one some times two virtual machines as well as use the Windows Linux subsystem alot.
    5. I do like the idea of a 2 in 1 especially for travel as I can flip just got reading.
    6. Willing to pay up to 3000-4000. I actually have no range and will pay accordingly if it meets the above. Obvious this will be dependent on what in it but at a minimum will want at least 16gb and an i7. How much better are the i9s?

Hopefully this is enough information, below is a list of one's I have been looking at or are interested in, perhaps an expert can lead me in a better direction. Am I asking too much, what are my primary tradeoffs... - Dell XPS 15 range - Lenovo Yoga i9 - Spectre x360 - Envy x360

So many options and I am at a complete loss. This is a real investment for me so hopefully some good suggestions come through.

Need help finding a gaming laptop for under 1k.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 09:46 AM PST

I'm starting a UX design course and I need a new laptop. Eventually it will become my personal laptop and I really want to primarily use it for gaming. I would like to be able to play Starwars Battle Front 2 which I know requires at least 8GB of ram. There are just so many options and so many reviews idk where to go? I need a good balance of something that will run my coding, Adobe, and steam games. Any suggestions?

I only have a phone rn, so I couldn't copy the form. Here's all of my answers to the questions though.

    Total budget: $1k

Used/refurbished: open, but would prefer new.

Form factor: since I have to run code, performance speed is my no.1 thing. Battery life would be second, but it's not a deal breaker.

    Weight and thinness: Not important

    Screen size: not important

Programs needed: Adobe photoshop, steam, MSFT, Skype/zoom

    Games: Starwars Battlefront 2

Specific requirements: needs a webcam, would like for the computer to be durable

looking for a simple laptop for a simple me (budget <$400

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 11:16 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$400 usd in the us obviously rather spend less if i dont need to spend that much

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

i like the security of it being brand new but you folks know better than me

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

i don't really need a touchscreen or for it to fold completely into a tablet or anything. battery life is nice and convenient but im probably gonna have it plugged in most of the time so it probably wont matter

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    not really important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

this will be mainly for watching youtube, netflix so bigger is better i suppose but i dont need the biggest screen out there

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

wont be doing much gaming besides maybe an n64 emulator. i used to be into making music and still have some equipment so i could see myself possibly wanting to use fl studio 19 but its not necessary

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    n/a

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

just need to have a couple usb slots, a headphone jack, and maybe a light up keyboard but thats just a luxury thing

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

this laptop's main purpose will be to stream video content and make spreadsheets and simple documents for work. i would however like to stay away from a non-windows OS so i have the option to do everything. i'd like the laptop to handle multiple tabs with ease for research and such.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    14 inch screen

    1080p

250gb SSD minimum (500+ GB SSD preferred)

    good cooling is important

    good battery life is preferred

    Budget: 1000 CAD

    edit:

build quality > performance > battery

form factor/finger print/etc are all irrelevant to me.

weight and thinness are not important. 14" screen though pls.

Slighty OT: a 17" laptop cooling pad that can go on a lap

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 11:04 PM PST

Most laptops have intake fans on the bottom preventing the laptop to be used on top of a lap. Ironic.

But the other annoying part is that laptop cooling pads aren't designed to go on a lap either, the fan intakes are still at the bottom and the air flow will be blocked. So what am I supposed to do? Get a breakfast-in-bed tray? That would be too easy.

I need suggestions for a laptop cooling pad that isn't the Targus Chill Mat. There's gotta be more options. The tiny legs won't do. The bar on a piece of plastic frame won't last.

    What else do we got?

    UK £200-300

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 02:32 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      £200-300, United Kingdom

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, although I'd prefer a new from Curry's as i get credit with them

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance above all, battery life is nice but not necessary. I dont care about build quality.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not at all

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

General microsoft office, she might play small games with it like Roblox too.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

As long as it can run Roblox.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      No requirements.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Im buying this laptop as a gift for my sister for Christmas. It doesn't need to be anything too powerful as long as it lasts her through school with a bit of maintenance, and can play Roblox.

    Thanks so much in advance!
