    Simple Questions - November 30, 2021

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 05:00 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

How do you tell if a GPU is better? The whole Ti thing confuses the shit out of me

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 05:25 AM PST

Would a 3060Ti be as good as a 3070 non Ti? How does the Ti thing work? Part of me feels like Ti is an overclocking phrase similar to the i7 9700k for example.

    Can someone explain?

I called a locally owned “PC Repair Shop” and asked them if they could update my motherboard BIOS….

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 10:21 AM PST

I shit you not, their response was "well you know, the BIOS is only a battery."

Anyways, I ended up using my MOBO's "flashback" feature and got the BIOS updated myself.

    What's the worst CPU/GPU mismatch you've seen?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 11:26 AM PST

I recently built my first pc. It's built for a high end graphics card to pair with the 5950x in it, but I'm currently running an RX 460 that I got for $20 used. How much worse could there be?

Computer doesn't turn on after replacing CPUs

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 09:56 AM PST

    Hi everyone!

I replaced my Rzyen 3 22000g with an Ryzen 7 5700g a few moments ago. I ddin't change anything else. But when I plug my PC in, I don't get any signal.

My case is a NZXT H210, and when I plug my PC in I can see the light around the power switch glowing, but the rest of my PC does nothing.

And yes, before anyone asks, I did update the BIOS of my mainboard before I replaced the CPU.

    Can somebody help me? Thanks.

    580 4GB or 2060?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 08:11 AM PST

I got all my PC parts except the GPU, I found a RX 580 4GB for 180$ US and a 2060 for 305$ US. I plan to use them till the shortage ends, which I heard people say it will probably end in 2023. I usually play eSports games but I will play some AAA ones too, for single player games I don't need high settings and 60 FPS I'm fine with 30+, I play on a 1080P 165Hz display. Which one should I buy?

    HOLY CRAP!

I was always under the impression that I didn't have to upgrade, my rig was fine even if it was outdated. I can comfortably play some of my titles A LOT better and have way better multitasking without everything stuttering if I play games while watching youtube. Some games have gotten a lot smoother and at a stable 144

Its not exactly top of the line parts but I'm so happy with it.

Next up on my agenda is replacing my tiny little GPU once (if..) the market calms down. In the mean time, anyone got any ideas to really take this build to the max besides my usual set of games?

GTX 3060 or Radeon 6600 XT for new build?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 07:44 AM PST

    Hi All,

I'm in the process of building a new PC and am unsure on graphics card to choose.

In my region the Radeon 6600 XT is about $125 cheaper than the RTX 3060.

On most benchmarks the Radeon outperforms the RTX 3060 too. However, DLSS on the RTX 3060 is making me wonder if I should spend the extra 125$. Has anyone had any experience on this? Is DLSS worth the premium?

    thanks

Budget gaming PC: upgrading from Fortnite on Switch to Fortnite on PC

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 06:30 AM PST

My 10-year old son mainly plays Fortnite on his Nintendo Switch. He wants to play on a PC so I want to build a machine that will at least match the performance of the Switch, and hopefully be a bit of an upgrade from that. A few days of googling tells me that this should be at least as good, and hopefully noticably better:

But I have a few questions about this:

    1. The CPU on it's own (with iGPU) should handle Fortnite just fine, I think - but if he decides he wants to play other, more demanding, games in the future, can I assume that we'll be able to buy a GPU (ha! Not this year, obviously...) and just plug it straight in to the existing machine (everything listed above)? Any compatibility issues to worry about?
    2. In my office we have a pile of old Dell Optiplex desktops no longer in use. Can't remember the model names right now, but they're approx 5 years old. Is it likely that I could salvage a motherboard and power supply from one of those to save myself ~£130? (I assume other parts - CPU, RAM - won't be much use as they'll be a little dated and were less than top spec in the first place. Could maybe salvage the HDD though for extra storage?)
    3. The case: I've gone for the cheapest one that has lights! Anything to be concerned about here? Anything that might not fit etc? (Don't want glass, that's just an accident waiting to happen.)
    4. He also likes Minecraft (again, on Switch) and knows that the PC version can do lots of extra stuff. Would the above machine handle the fancier aspects of Minecraft too?
    5. Is this CPU going to be ok without a separate cooler? I think it should come with a standard one?

We already have a monitor, keyboard, mouse, headset. Need wifi as that's preferable to a huge ethernet cable trailing through the whole house.

Can I use a 120gb SSD of my main storage

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 11:00 AM PST

I'm on a super tight budget and originally had a 2TB hard drive for 65$ but decided if I just buy this SSD

ADATA SU655 120GB 3D NAND 2.5 inch SATA III High Speed Read up to 520MB/s Internal SSD (ASU655SS-120GT-C)

I'd be saving alot of money since that SSD is on sale for 25$ and then I can use my 2TB external ps4 hard drive which I can wipe and use externally.

My question is, would I be able to use this SSD with windows on it.

Thinking about a new monitor. 4K seems silly, 1440p sounds like a sensible upgrade though. Any advice?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 07:09 AM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

I glanced at it very thoroughly

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    Gaming and general use

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1440p 120 FPS, I don't mind lowering stuff to make it happen

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    300-400€

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Germany

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    Speccy Link of my rig

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Long story short, I need a new monitor elsewhere, want to put my current monitor there and upgrade my home rig. I do not want a massive upgrade, I just want something a little nicer than my aging monitor. I saw the Gigabyte M27Q for around 350€ and thought that looked good. Seems to have started around 500€ earlier this year, I doubt it's gonna come down significantly more any time soon.

I recently got a new 120Hz phone, and I quite like it, so I'd like my gaming experience to catch up with that.

    So my questions are:

Is that a good monitor for me? Is there something better in that price range?

Is my PC going to do well with 1440p gaming? I'm okay with it if it just runs at 60 FPS as long as that doesn't cause weird problems on a higher refresh rate monitor. I dunno if it does. But 120Hz or more would be neat. But I'd rather turn graphics down than FPS. I currently mainly play cooperative games like Warframe, Deep Rock Galactic, Vermintide 2, maybe some single player games like Fallout 4 or Skyrim, probably some GTA V, nothing overly new or fancy. I'm not gonna pretend a 4th gen i7 is a beast for brand new AAA titles, but it runs what I like very well... at 1920x1200, at least. No idea about higher resolutions, but from what I hear, my 1660 Super should do well with that. And no idea if DDR3 RAM is going to affect anything.

    EDIT: Fixed a link.

Increasing RAM speed from 2133 to 3200

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 07:15 AM PST

Just got 2x8gb (16gb) corsair vengeance sticks rated at 3200mhz intending to replace my 2x8 2133mhz sticks.

But I'm having issues getting the system to post after enabling XMP and changing bios setting to 3200. The system will go into a reboot cycle. After 6 or 7 cycles I've had to power down manually and pull the CMOS just to be able to get to bios.

    Build: i7-9700k Asrock Z370 Extreme4 mobo 1080ti

Looking for some help on getting that ram speed up.

What are the intel / Nvidia equivalents of Xbox series S, xbox series X, and PS5?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 09:40 AM PST

I suspect that raw performance will be one thing (I.e PS5 computes on par with a 3060) but because of console optimizations the real world fps and graphics quality might be more on par with a 3070? What are the real equivalents?

Refurbished mining card with good benchmarks

I know buying a card that was once used for mining is a gamble but if it still hits benchmarks and was used at a professional facility that was being relatively smart about how they used their GPU's, it it a terrible idea?

M.2 drive detected by BIOS but not Windows

    Posted: 29 Nov 2021 08:43 PM PST

So I just upgraded my PC; I have a Gigabyte Aorus Pro AX board and I bought a Sandisk M.2 nvme drive. The drive shows up in BIOS (but not as an M.2 drive but as a PCIE drive), but no trace of it in Windows. Nothing in Disk Management, nothing in Device Manager. The board has 4 M.2 slots, so I tried a different slot, same result. Bit of a headscratcher. Any ideas?

EDIT: So you all ignored Rule No. 1 of tech support - assume the user is an absolute fucking moron. What the BIOS was detecting as being plugged into the PCIE port (why this was grouped with the drives in the BIOS is beyond me) wasn't the drive, it was I assume my GPU. The BIOS was not detecting the drive. The actual problem? Apparently, the drive just wasn't seated well enough even though secured by the screw. It needed to be pushed in about a half-millimeter more. Sigh. Anyway, thank you all for your help. Sorry.

Stuck between upgrading now or waiting until next year for DDR5 and next gen CPU's

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 04:31 AM PST

I've spent over 12 hours on YouTube trying to figure out whether it's worth it to upgrade my CPU and RAM now or to wait until next year. According to what I've heard, with the recent arrival of DDR5, I'll be smacked with a "early adoption tax," which means I'll have to pay inflated pricing for a new motherboard, CPU, and, of course, RAM (because its new, plus supply issues because of covid) if I adopt this new hardware early.

Because I primarily play games, a DDR4 to DDR5 ram increase appears to be pointless which leaves me with the CPU upgrade. Is it more cost effective to upgrade now or wait till the next generation is launched next year?

With my current specs, I'm undecided whether it's worth futureproofing and going DDR5 with all the new components (CPU, motherboard, etc.), or remaining with the best of this generation's CPU's and DDR4 RAM and betting on the longevity of these parts and waiting 2-3 years to move to next gen and DDR5.

It would be very appreciated if anyone could assist in clarifying the decision. I can provide current computer specifications which may justify the need to upgrade now.

0.6V difference between motherboard USB ground and audio interface USB ground (+nasty shock)

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 10:15 AM PST

I built a new PC last month with a Gigabyte B550i and Corsair SF750. I've been using it with a Topping DX3 Pro (a wall-powered DAC + amp) through USB with no issues.

Today I went to unplug the DX3 and plug in a flash drive into the same port. While one hand was making contact with the motherboard's USB port and another one was holding the DX3 cable, I experienced a seriously nasty shock through my arms/fingers.

It felt like at least 40-50V (rough ballpark). I don't even know how that high of a voltage is possible through USB. I measured the ground between my motherboard and the DX3 and found a 0.6V difference, which doesn't explain the shock but still seems super high. My computer is plugged into the same power strip as the DX3.

    My question is:

    A) What can I do to match the grounds?

    B) How can I make sure nothing was damaged? Right now I'm testing the USB port by doing some file transfers, but I don't know what other tests I should do to make sure the motherboard is functioning correctly.

    C) How has it been working fine this whole time? A 0.6V short across two grounds seems like it could cause tons of problems.

    Need suggestions on keyboard

    Posted: 30 Nov 2021 05:57 AM PST

Howdy, new here. Not a gamer in the slightest but hope I can tap into your expertise.

I've been a paramedic for 15 years and due to my mental health I've had to step away from my ambulance and into our 911 dispatch center. We have 3 computers at our consoles and use a kvm switch to change between them. I've bought my own keyboard because I don't like the ones that are supplied. I don't think its mechanical and really it wouldn't matter if it was as long as its quiet.

So here is my question. Since all 3 pc's are managed by our CTM dept, there is no installing software etc. Ideally I'd like to program a macro into the keyboard that it would save in some kind of memory and can therefore carry it from one pc to another. While its easy enough to hit scrlk, scrlk, [pc#] I'm constantly hitting the wrong computer and time is critical. So if possible I'd like to program that set of keystrokes into a macro button that I can label to save time when I'm taking a 911 call.

This may end up being more expensive than its worth, or more complicated than its worth but it can't hurt to ask.

Thanks in advance for your time!!!
