MacBook Air M1 or Huawei Matebook 14?

MacBook Air M1 or Huawei Matebook 14?

MacBook Air M1 or Huawei Matebook 14?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 01:32 AM PDT

I'm struggling to choose. I would opt for the Huawei laptop since MacOs doesn't appeal to me as much and likewise, I would choose Macbook since I already have iPhone + Airpods.

    Any suggestion?

(I use the laptop to study, work with Office and do small programming tasks)

    Thanks in advance :)

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15 inches is perfect nothing smaller.

WFH Mac user switching to windows… please help!

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 06:14 AM PDT

I've been an avid Mac user for years and just started a new gig which requires windows.

-I have a flexible budget ~$1,000. -I'd like to avoid touchscreens, 2 in 1s, etc, as those features feel like more options to break. -I won't be traveling a ton, and have a second screen to utilize. ~14" screen ideal.

    Any suggestions? TIA!

Need your advice! Affordable gaming Laptop with colour accurate display? 80K INR/1100 USD in India

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 05:02 AM PDT

I'm trying to get the best of both worlds here at an affordable price. Cheaper is better but I can go up to about 80K INR/1100 USD for a new machine. I would love to hear your suggestions/advice.

Here are my requirements in order of priority -
    1. Performance: Needs to be fast. At least GTX 1650, SSD and a good CPU. I'm done facing lag and want to play AAA titles at medium settings at least.
    2. Display: A >100% sRGB/>72% NTSC display since I watch a lot of movies/tv shows on my laptop and would like better colour reproduction. I high refresh rate would be nice bonus but I'm going to be using an external monitor to game anyway.
    3. Size and Weight: Bigger displays are better as long as the weight can be managed around 2 kgs.

    1. Thermal Management and Durability: Hope that the machine lasts for a couple of years before I start facing any niggles/replacements.

    2. Others: Good audio performance, battery life and a fingerprint reader would be bonuses.

    What I'm considering:

    1. Asus Vivobook Gaming F571GT-BN913TS: At 54K INR it meets the important criteria. But its thermal management and battery life are pretty bad.
    2. Asus Zephyrus G14: 80k. A highly rated and amazing machine. Meets all the criteria but a tad expensive.

Let me know your thoughts. Thanks

    Upgrading laptop ram yourself?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 04:22 AM PDT

Hello, I'm thinking of buying a nice laptop I've found but I've got a slight snag... It only has 8gb of ram. 1 soldered 4gb stick and 1 removable 4gb stick. I was thinking of replacing the removable one with an 8 or 16gb stick.

However... It has a ryzen apu in it and I know how important dual channel is for these APUs in terms of graphics performance.

If I get a ram stick with the same/better timings and speed than the current one, will it still run in full dual channel mode? Or am I better off just sticking to the current setup and making the most out of the dual channel?

    Thank you!

good options for2-1 laptoptss take notes on

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 04:08 AM PDT

My laptop just broke so this is a good chance to start digitizing my notes for Uni. Do you guys have any good or bad experiences with it? Or any suggestions of good models?

budget: max. around 1000 weight: I travel a lot so not heavier than normal purpose: University and working in customer service

I prefer having a 2-1laptop for this. I would consider buying an Ipad instead if the2-1 isnt worth it.

$600 - 700 Laptop with above 90 sRGB that can handle light gaming (non-triple A games).

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 07:58 PM PDT

I have a separate gaming PC that can handle triple A games and video editing. I'm looking for a midrange laptop that has a great screen and can handle light gaming and editing on the go.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $600-700

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      no

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Priority would be a good FHD screen with above 90 sRGB, preferably 8GB ram or more w/ SSD. In terms of build quality, I don't really have a preference.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not that important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Preferably 15 but 14 would probably be fine too.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Light editing through premiere pro ( I have a PC more suited for that, probably just light editing on the go)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Metroidvanias/platformers like Hollow Knight, Celeste, Hades. Probably some older titles too like Bayonetta, Dragon Age: Origins, Persona 4, Older RE games, etc. Medium settings would be okay and around 40-60 fps.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
USB-C and touch screen would be nice but not a priority.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      none

Any laptops rugged enough that they can be safely used in the rain?

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 03:21 AM PDT

There was a random thread over in tech support gore showing somebody using their laptop in light rain.

That got me thinking "I wonder if any of the ruggedized laptops are hardy enough that the ports have some kind of protection and they can be safely used in the rain." I guess this would require that the screen and keyboard have some kind of waterproofing too.

I know that actual waterproofing (e.g. IP-68) is not currently available. But I can't imagine that people who needs to use laptops in outdoor conditions (IDK, parks supervisors / botanists) have to run for cover whenever there's even a slight drizzle.

Any options that are rugged enough for this kind of use case?

    ***

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      2000 NIS
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Not at all. Not into looks. Something tough and rugged but ugly would be fine.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not at all.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15.6 inch or above.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Actually yes. I've recently started a YouTube channel. Kdenlive on Ubuntu. This wouldn't be a requirement as I rarely use my laptop. But it would be a nice-to-have if there were something rugged that could do this too.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Don't game.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
As above. Looking for a ruggedized laptop that can stand up to a little bit of rain without problem.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      Outlined above.

    Looking for a 2 in 1 Chromebook.

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 02:48 AM PDT

    ASUS Flip C434 14" Touchscreen 2-in-1 Chromebook (Intel Core m3-8100Y/128GB eMMC/4GB RAM/Chrome OS)

    ASUS Flip C434 14" Touchscreen 2-in-1 Chromebook (Intel Cm3-8100Y/64GB eMMC/4GB RAM/Chrome OS) - Eng

    Asus 11.6" Chromebook - Grey - (Intel Celeron N4000 / 32GB eMMC / 4GB RAM / Chrome OS) - (C214MA-Q1-CB)

    Acer Spin 14" Touchscreen 2-in-1 Chromebook - Silver (AMD Ryzen 3 3250C/64GB eMMC/4GB RAM/Chrome OS)

    Acer Chromebook Spin 311 CP311-2H CP311-2H-C7V9 11.

I've never used Chrome OS before.

I'll be using it for Teams, Zoom, email, writing, browsing, photo editing, Canva and basic video/audio editing. I play Word Blitz, Words With Friends, angry birds and sometimes games like Plague and The Room. I'd like to connect to a drawing tablet at some point to use apps like Autodesk Sketchbook with a passive stylus. 80% of things outside of browsing (with many tabs) will be doing creative stuff

I'll watch the odd YouTube and I generally won't be using it to watch movies or listen to music but I'll be connecting to my stereo via Bluetooth for music streaming services.

I like having a physical backup of my stuff so a micro USB is essential as is a backlit keyboard and a construction of metal. I'll be looking into getting some Network Attached Storage in the future. I can be klutzy but the Chromebook generally won't be leaving my house or my workspace. I have to spend most of my time laying down so weight/physicality is a factor as I'll most often be using it in tablet mode.

I have problems with small motor skills so I would primarily use a wireless mouse with a dongle but the touchpad should be relatively friendly to avoid the easy frustration of my hands betraying me. On my Samsung phone and tablet I use a Microsoft SwiftKey keyboard to swipe type.

I'll be using this 12 hours a day so battery longevity over the life of the product is a factor. I won't be in a position to buy smother for 3 or 4 years. All are currently within 100$ of one another - 500ish to 600ish Canadian.

    Thank you for your help!

Looking for a more performant upgrade to my current Inspiron 7586 (Australia, ~$2000 AUD)

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 06:53 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

    I currently have a Dell Inspiron 7586, a 15" 2-in-1 with:

    • An Intel Core i7-8565U
    • An NVIDIA GeForce MX150 (the higher-power variant)
    • 1x 16GB DDR4 @ 2400MHz (RAM is actually 2666MHz but limited by the CPU I think)
    • A 512GB Western Digital SN520 M.2 PCIe SSD (I get roughly 1.5GB/s reading and writing)
    • A 4K HDR display (AUO34EB)
    • A 56Wh battery

After Dell replaced my 1080p display with a 4K display thanks to a dead pixel and the global LCD shortage, everything's been kind of sluggish. Even scrolling through webpages and taking notes with OneNote is a painful task.

I'd like to sell this laptop, and upgrade to something similar that's either more capable of driving a 4K display or has a 1440p display.

I want something with at least the same CPU and GPU power, as well as at least 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD (I'm open to upgrading parts myself).

    Thanks for your time!

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
I'm looking for something around $2000 AUD, as that's what I expect to be able to sell my existing laptop for. I'm open to going a little higher (+$500) if necessary.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Absolutely, if they're cheap enough.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I need, in order of priority:
      • A 2-in-1 with pen support
      • Performance to smoothly drive a high-resolution display during day-to-day tasks
      • Decent battery life for uni (I'm happy to use an external power bank, though).
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not very, as I have a backpack.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15", at least 1440p
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
The occasional light gaming, nothing too crazy (Rocket League, Terraria). Intel's latest Xe graphics or any NVIDIA or AMD GPU should be fine.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I mentioned some games in the question above. I don't mind low settings, and any framerate above 30 is fine. Gaming isn't the priority here.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I need a touchscreen with pen input. The keyboard needs to be decent as I'll be spending a lot of time writing notes and programming.
Upgradable parts are also important to me, regarding the RAM, SSD and WiFi card.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
10th gen Intel would be nice as it's Hackintosh compatible, but it isn't a must-have.

Laptop for College Under $1500 CAD

    Posted: 04 Nov 2021 12:46 AM PDT

Hey! I just wanted to ask for a lil help with picking a laptop for college.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $1500 CAD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, battery life, and maybe build quality too

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

As long as it's light enough for me to carry to and from school every day

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15" max

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I might be doing a little bit of editing but not much, mostly using the usual Microsoft Office applications + light gaming

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
    1. League of Legends & TFT (60 fps)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A good keyboard is optimal but the touchpad doesn't matter since I'm using a mouse.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
    1. I'm primarily using this laptop for school and other normal stuff like watching movies, but I would also like to be able to play a few games like LOL or TFT when I'm bored.
    2. I'm looking for something that will last be a good 5 years or so. As long as it has at least 500 gbs or storage I am fine with it. I don't have a preference when it comes to Intel or Ryzen. Having a webcam included with the laptop would be nice (I've seen some that don't have that option).

Thank you for reading this! I appreciate all the help that is given.

Looking for new ~$3k gaming laptop w/ subtle appearance

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 07:53 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    ~$3k USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Sure but probably not that many 3080's on the aftermarket lol. I definitely want something of the current gen hardware.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance > form factor > build quality > battery

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'd say somewhere behind performance and right next to build quality....kind of like the previous answer...pretty up there

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15.6" preferred, but I've looked at 14" as well. 17" is too large.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

gaming (modern AAA titles like Baldur's Gate 3, Horizon Zero Dawn), video editing (nothing crazy).

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

modern AAA titles like Baldur's Gate 3, Horizon Zero Dawn, on max at 1080 or 1440, 60-120hz would be fine.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good build quality, nothing with crazy loud branding or lighting like the Stealth Pro, customizability re: undervolt/fan curves/etc, good high brightness display would be ideal 350+ nits

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

So far, I been looking at the Razer 14 and 15 advanced, the new GS66, ROG G15, Legion 7 slim, Eluktronics Max 15. There's a lot of choices and I'm pretty accustomed to the MSI app ecosystem but I think all the MSI stuff on my current computer is all out of date anyways so I'm fine with branching out to a new brand. Clevo/Tongfang/Alienware etc other stuff I didn't mention here are fine with me too. I like that Eluktronics includes a liquid metal option and I'm probably gonna want a mfg that provides that to help with temps in case undervolting isn't on the table.

I'm looking probably at a 3070 to get a good performance:cost balance, and additionally, I don't want to have to watch temperatures too closely so I don't think I'd need a 140W TGP 3080... but i mean.... maybe? lol. I think a ~110W 3070 would be just fine, and either a 11th gen intel or a newer Ryzen both fine options. I've heard good things about AMDs latest mobile dGPU and I'd be open to that as well.

I currently use MSI Dragon Center for the speed shift to keep temps and power consumption down, and I use XTU to undervolt (-.120v). With eco mode on, my cpu voltage idles at around .580v-.620v and about .980v-1.03v under load. Ideally I'd like to find a system that has decent tools for voltages and fan curves etc. I heard that 10th gen Intel no longer allow undervolting, but then they did again or something? so I'm not sure exactly how to approach that.

HDMI 2.1 would be ideal but I know the newest Stealth Pro do not offer it (might be looking at a 4k out at some point in the future, but technically not a deal breaker since I don't have one yet).

Probably gonna want something that will play nice with freesync or g-sync. I'll primarily be using a nice monitor setup with the laptop screen as just an extra surface unless I'm traveling.

Sorry this is rambling now, so --

TLDR; burned my 1060 out mining Ethereum and looking to upgrade to a thin/light/subtle looking gaming system. 3070 100W+ TGP, intel 11 gen / ryzen 9, gsync/freesync out preferred, around $3k or less if possible.

A laptop for gaming and studies

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 07:46 PM PDT

So i am studying computer and for that i would need a laptop but i don't want it just for studying, i want it to game too not like i want a full rtx 3080 style. I won't even play new big games such as cyber punk god of war and ac Valhalla etc. I want to play games like genshin, Fortnite, cod warzone, etc with about 40-50 fps on med settings most importantly i want to play hearts of iron 4 peacefully which is not a big game but it does require a nice CPU. So i want a laptop with a fast CPU, i don't want big graphics card either just want to run these games pretty easily.

I'm trying to get the laptop on the Walmart website in December to take advantage of the 25% off discounts Walmart associates can use, so it needs to be on the Walmart website. The price of the laptop has to be $1000 or less before discount.
