“Warning: dracut initqueue timeout” messed up grub file?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 11:24 AM PST

I just edited /etc/default/grub so I could enable discard for a LUKS encrypted drive that I needed to trim. I followed a guide (posted below), but I'm wondering if I added the argument in the wrong place. When I tried to boot up, my screen was covered with messages like

    >Warning: dracut initqueue timeout - starting timeout scripts

    >dracut initqueue[439]: Warning: Couldn't boot

    >/dev/mapper/qubes_dom0-root doesn't exist

    >/dev/qubes_dom0/root doesn't exist /dev/qubes_dom0/swap doesn't exist

    TL;DR

In /etc/default/grub for the line "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX," I added

    rd.luks.options=discard

    right after the first argument,

    rd.luks.uuid=(…etc…)

The guide wasn't that clear, and this is my first time messing with grub. Should I have added that argument to a different place in the grub cmdline?

I'd really appreciate any help! The warning screens are intimidating haha

Update: I tried typing "exit" to back out of the emergency shell, and it stopped accepting commands at that point. After that, I flailed around trying all the key combinations I knew of (they were disabled). Out of sheer desperation I used Ctrl-Alt-Del, and for some reason that let me boot normally!?! I didn't even know that'd work for anything other than Windows…but I'll take it!

Why does my BIOS menu have all theese under Boot Priority? Theese are previous distris i have installed, but I always completely uninstalled then. Why are they still listed here?

    Can I completely ditch windows?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 06:29 AM PST

I'm a chemist and I dabble in some coding (mainly python). I like LaTeX but I can't always use it for word processing due to collaboration (obviously Libre office would probably work here). I have installed and used Ubuntu and related distros on a couple of machines at various points and can do some basic essentials in bash.

Wondering if anyone sees any major issues with me only using Linux, i.e. not dual-boot? Especially interested in responses from chemists/other scientists. Thinking Debian, Mint or some Ubuntu flavour.

Not that it matters but I'm probably going to get a framework laptop.

    Thank you!

Unable to boot back into Windows [Debian dual boot]

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 05:17 AM PST

Okay, so I've been working for a week on installing Debian 11 to a separate HDD so it doesn't interfere with my wife's stuff on the other HDD with Windows 10.

Normally it would autoboot into Windows and to get into Debian I'd have to press F12 to select my HDD and then confirm again once the grub menu appears.

Everything has been going great however this morning I had to access the Win 10 HDD to get a keepass file for my passwords. I updated it and saved it and shut down.

About an hour later my wife tries to go on the computer but it won't boot into Windows. The motherboard logo shows, the windows icons spins, then it goes to a second screen of just a new windows icon spinning and then it goes into a black screen.

I've tried booting it up and pressing F12 to select the Win 10 HDD but it will just display the grub menu with only Debian as an option.

If I saved the keepass file to the Win 10 HDD whilst being in Debian has this messed up the boot some how?

What do I have to change to get Win 10 to boot normally as my wife is pretty pissed at me right now?

Was it a mistake to delete every partition then allocate new partitions of different sizes?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 01:28 PM PST

I got a warning when doing fdisk suggesting its 'probably a bad idea' - I can't remember the rest of the wording.

I spent some time looking around because I don't fully understand disk partitioning but gave in eventually and deleted everything in cfdisk and created the same partitions I did in VMs.

My system is running fine, but I'm curious about the warning

How do I dual boot Windows and Fedora 35 if I already have 35 installed on my machine?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 01:20 PM PST

Hey every one. Until now, I'm always installed Windows first, then installing Fedora and let the installer automatically partition the drive for dual boot.

For my current setup, K already have Fedora installed and I need to install a minimal setup of windows.

How would I got about doing so?

My system is running Fedora 35 with LUKS encryption btw. If I need to supply hardware info or installation info, please comment bellow.

    Thanks in advance.

Looking to Move to Linux from Windows -- 3D art programs a must however...

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 12:34 PM PST

I read the top post suggesting reasons for and against moving from Win7 to Linux. Anyone using 3d Art programs like Blender, Unreal Engine, and similar actually on Linux? What's the current outlook? I'd like to leave before the force move to Win 11.

Infrastructure as code solution for Linux Desktop?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 08:17 AM PST

I am new to Linux (actually in the middle of moving from Windows 10 to Mint, just waiting for the thermal paste to arrive!) but have a bit of experience with Ansible and Terraform.

I was wondering if it's possible (or even common place) to automate building a Linux desktop - a fully automated script (or set of scripts) with zero user interaction that could, for example:

    • sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
    • Install drivers from Driver manager
    • Install VLC, Dropbox, Atom, Steam (any app that I will need)
    • Run the swap usage commands
    • Optimise battery life (if on laptop)
    • Theme my Linux desktop
    • etc

My real life IT job relies heavily on automation and reading all the guides on "the first things to do after installing Linux Mint" and seeing the sheer amount of work involved...

Surely it should just be a script that can be run. If so, it should be on Github. If it's on Github I can clone it and edit it. Once it's suited to my purposes, I can guarantee any desktop I run the script on will have the same set of apps/customisations.

I'm not sure if my situation is all that common (all the data I care about is either in the cloud, or on external hard drives, so I'm free to destroy and reinstall Linux as many times as I need to), but it seemed like a natural extension of setting up a Desktop. Also, I imagine it'll be useful if people ever upgrade their Linux distros.

In Windows enterprise IT, you have Group Policy to completely configure and control an end-users experience on a desktop. I suppose I want something like that, but just for me.

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 10:01 AM PST

Recently updated to kernel Linux 5.13.0-21-generic in order to use the pro controller but it crashes any game on steam, changing the config in steam delays the crash by 10 seconds.

I use Linux Mint 20.2 cinnamon.

What's a friendly GUI solution to protect my files from being snooped on by computer shop? [Linux Mint 20.2 Cinnamon]

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 04:59 AM PST

I don't ever intend to physically open or disassemble my laptop myself, so the threat model is simply someone (mainly the computer shop) snooping on my files. Worst case is laptop getting stolen.

I always depend on the shop for anything hardware-related: cleaning, parts replacement, diagnosis, repair, etc.

I only use Cryptomator with cloud service providers.

Obviously I'm probably not capable of encrypting the whole drive since I'm asking that question.

I think I want to encrypt only the ff:

    • my personal files
    • dot files that are also "personal" like .cache, .mozilla, .thunderbird, .bash_history

As of this writing the above files total to around 120 GB.

Is Veracrypt a good solution? How would you do it? What other files should I encrypt?

    TIA.

This fails ~ sudo echo "200" > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness warning: An error occurred while redirecting file '/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness' open: Permission denied

    This is not ~ sudo -i root@arch ~# echo "200" > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

I wonder why. Both same, right?

    Any decent alternatives to PinguyBuilder?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2021 08:13 AM PST

Hello everyone. I'm new here and have read the rules. I have been working on a hobby project with Ubuntu 20.04, and recently, Debian 11. I've been using PinguyBuilder to remaster my own installation. However, I had to install unwanted dependencies because PinguyBuilder wasn't designed for Debian.

Is there a lightweight alternative to PinguyBuilder? And has anyone tried penguin-eggs on Debian 11?

Your suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks!
