    Linux / root confusion

    / root confusion

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 02:28 PM PST

Im trying to understand the Linux filesystem.

I read people call "/" Root and I read "/root" root, Im confused.

If someone talks about mounting root on a partition, does he mean mounting "/" or "/root"?

Using hybrid graphics, how can I force an app to always start using dedicated GPU?

Virtualbox performance is abysmal on my laptop, and I have determined the reason is the system attempting to assign it to the onboard GPU. How can I prevent that?

Which Desktop Environments Are 4K Resolution Friendly?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 01:46 PM PST

I have two computers with 4K monitors. I want to know which desktop environments would be best for 4K resolution because I have noticed that some Desktop Environments like xfce and i3 window manager are difficult to setup in order to make my 4k monitor look good and scaled to an appropriate measure.

Using Fedora 34/35 kills my battery when the lid is closed.

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 03:18 PM PST

Using Gnome for any distro seems kill my battery when the lid is closed. I can press the power button to hibernate but my computer acts as if it was completely turned off.

Manjaro KDE works great in terms of battery but with multiple displays (the main laptop screen, a 27in 4k and a 24in 1080p) the two external displays wont connect sometimes.

Is there a way to actually make Fedora truly hibernate on lid close or power button press? Or is hibernate actually supposed to reboot when I resume using it? I just hate having to open all my apps and windows again.

Trying to Install MakeHuman through PPA, error untrusted PPA

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 03:17 PM PST

Hi there, im Trying to install the Program Makehuman on PoP_OS! through their PPA Repository

    https://launchpad.net/~makehuman-official/+archive/ubuntu/makehuman-community

You can find it here, when i try to install it and sudo apt update, then i get the error

The repository 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/makehuman-official/makehuman-11x/ubuntu hirsute Release' does not have a Release file.

N: Updating from such a repository can't be done securely, and is therefore disabled by default.

N: See apt-secure(8) manpage for repository creation and user configuration details.

Id like to know how to see apt-secure(8) and how I can get it to update from that repository anyway, when googled i only found the info to edit secure.list(5) which for the life of me i cant find, i hope someone can help me :)

Should I have multiple sound servers running?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 01:34 PM PST

    Running Manjaro KDE, Kernal 5.10.70-1

Right now, my results for inxi -Aa is

    Audio:

    Device-1: AMD Ellesmere HDMI Audio [Radeon RX 470/480 / 570/580/590] vendor: XFX Pine driver: snd_hda_intelv: kernel bus-ID: 26:00.1 chip-ID: 1002:aaf0 class-ID: 0403 Device-2: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] Family 17h HD Audio vendor: Micro-Star MSI driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus-ID: 28:00.3 chip-ID: 1022:1457 class-ID: 0403 Sound Server-1: ALSA v: k5.10.70-1-MANJARO running: yes Sound Server-2: JACK v: 1.9.19 running: no Sound Server-3: PulseAudio v: 15.0 running: yes Sound Server-4: PipeWire v: 0.3.38 running: yes

As you can see, I have three sound servers running at once.

The reason I am looking into this is I have a strange issue where my system will remain muted until audio plays, whereupon it unmutes itself, regardless of source. Even a system bell, like emptying the Trash, causes this issue. I assumed it was a Pulse issue with module-device-restore or module-stream-restore, since they activate every time the alternate stream plays, but disabling both does nothing other than remove their entries from the log. PulseAudio -vvvvv is fairly chatty.

Am I supposed to have three of these things running, or has something gone awry?

Touchpad and bluetooth issues on Manjaro KDE

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 02:53 PM PST

    Hello People,

I installed Manjaro KDE 21.1.6 with kernel 5.15.1 on my new Razer Blade 15, 2021 model. I am happy with the results, but I am facing two problems. One I can live with, and the other I'd solve soon.

    1. Bluetooth automatically disables at Reboot. Bluetooth works seamlessly, after a cold boot, but after a restart it automatically disables itself, and doesn't enable using systemctl commands. This is kinda okay, because I can always shut down and power up, instead of a traditional restart. That being said, a solution is appreciated.
To be clear, I can't get the bluetoothctl to work. It shows No default controllers available on commands like power on.
    2. The major problem is the cursor lag/jitter after suspend or sleep. I haven't tried a USB or Bluetooth mouse yet. I mostly depend on the trackpad, and I believe the issue is there. I think the kernel module responsible is i2c_hid_acpi. But removing and restarting it back with modprob doesn't seem to solve this.

I am really excited about making this OS my daily driver. Any help on the above issues is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks a lot!!

Is my computer just not made for Linux? I seem to have a ton of issues as a noobie just trying to get everything set up. I've tried 3 different distros, all with different serious problems/performance issues.

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 08:04 AM PST

My specs are as follows: Ryzen 2600 GTX 1070 Ti 16GB of RAM 1 4K monitor and 1 1080P monitor.

My problems with the distros are as follows:

All distros - no included wifi adapter drivers, on every distro except Manjaro, I was able to fix this

PopOS - was trying to install a package I needed and I got to the "are you sure you want to do this? [Y/n]", I put in Y (case-sensitive) and it aborted the operation Everytime. Extreme lag in the PopOS store.

Kubuntu - interface lag, even after installing the correct NVIDIA drivers.

Manjaro - package installation makes absolutely no sense and just gives errors about strip binaries and googling for responses doesn't help at all.

All of these distros feel far less responsive than Windows and even lag while watching YouTube.

What am I doing wrong? Is their something wrong with my computer?

Is there a way I can "partitionize" my installation?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 05:23 PM PST

Under frustration I made an unwise decision and put my Pop!_OS install all on /, instead of two parts for / and /home. I'm having issues with my installation and want to switch to either Fedora or Manjaro, but backing everything up and reinstalling it would take awhile. Is booting into a live GParted and separating the partitions possible? Thanks.

How to replace Windows with a twist

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 04:30 PM PST

With the advent of windows 11 I really really want to move away from using windows as a daily driver.

The problem is I can't compromise on 2 things:

    1) Being able to use Citrix Workspace for being able to remote into my windows systems at work.

    2) I play a number of games with friends and it is an important part of my life to keep barriers to this a minimum. While steam has come a long way in regards Linux support, its still not all the way there.

So my question to you folks: What would be the best method for going about this?

For number 1) It looks like Workspace has a Linux app, so it seems like that might solve itself, but wanted to see if anyone had experience with that.

For number 2) My understanding is that I have to accept that duel boot is the answer as not everything will work in Linux even with Proton. Is that true?

Anyways thanks for taking the time to read this!

Can someone help me better understand these instructions from GitHub on how to install firmware for Silead touch screens? https://github.com/onitake/gslx680-acpi

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 08:23 AM PST

I recently installed Fedora on my RCA Cambio. The Fedora operating systems works, but it's missing the firmware needed to run the touch screen, cameras, and auto screen rotation functions. So, I have to manually install the firmware in order to get my Cambio to get the touch screen and other components working.

The good news is that I found a GitHub page that has some of the firmware I'm looking for (link). The bad news is that I don't understand the install instructions at all.

I only recently learned how to use the Linux terminal to move files. The stuff that the GitHub page is talking about goes way over my head.

So, if possible, a step by step walk through of the instillation process would be fantastic.Alternatively, is there an easier way of installing the firmware I want, or are there any educational resources I can go to that could help me better understand what the GitHub page is talking about?

    Thank you.

Looking for specific software to describe files, specifically via indexed "tags", more details below.

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 03:16 PM PST

Have a plethora of files, tens of thousands, media files, I'm looking for reliable software that would allow me to attach virtual searchable tags to these files for future optimized searching.

At the present time I'm placing small hints in the file names to make my life easier, naturally I realize this is far from optimal. eg MoutainWinterVideo292892, BachClassicalPiece33993 etc.

If you could please recommend software, preferably Open Source (but not a requirement) that would allow me to accomplish this, I would be very grateful to say the least.

As an added bonus feature it would be great if the tags are stored in a single database index file that I could easily backup as this would be a lot of work invested.

Hopefully my description makes sense, if not I would gladly add more description on my needs in order to make it easier for you to suggest.

Thank you for your time and insights.

Boot entries in need of cleanup

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 08:31 AM PST

I'm running Fedora, Pop, Manjaro and Win11 on my machine with multiple SSD drives and an NVME drive. The Linux distros are installed on a SATA SSD and share EFI system partition and Windows on an NVME drive with its own EFI system partition. I have manually copied over the Windows boot files to the Linux EFI partition in order to be able to boot Windows without going through my motherboard UEFI boot options. My systemd-boot menu is a mess but I'm unsure how to clean things up. As can be seen from the folder tree there are two EFI folders and in the topmost one are only files related to Pop_OS. To my knowledge I haven't created this two tiered structure. I installed the operating systems in this order if it makes any difference: Windows 10 (recently upgraded to 11), Pop, Manjaro, Fedora. As can been seen from the photo there are for some reason also a lot of weird entries relating to Pop and they appeared after I installed Fedora for some reason.

Only one monitor working and graphic bugs. Please help

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 01:22 PM PST

    Hello.

So i installed Artix recently and it works fine with the exception that i cant use 2 monitors. If i try, the cursor doesnt show up and i cant click anything and everything is extremely unresponsive and laggy. Also i get weird graphic bugs.

I think the issue is the graphics card driver. RTX2060S is my card. The one monitor is 144hz the other one 60 if that matters.

Yesterday everything worked this started today...

Please help and dont just downvote.

Im gonna try to install a driver next... Will update

Installing Linux from a hard drive partition

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 09:17 AM PST

Till now, I was using DriveDroid to install or repair my Linux install but recently, I've had to switch to a new phone which isn't rooted, so that's out. I don't have a USB or DVD at hand but I'd like to keep a backup incase I would eventually fuck things up. So I'm thinking of installing it from the hard drive itself

I've installed Linux like that once, but I remember it being a right pain since the partition with the ISO in it was below the root partition so I couldn't format root. Is there any clean and painless way to do this?

Also, incase I mess up grub on my install, is it possible to keep a backup bootloader in the iso partition?

I'm trying to install Pop! OS btw
