Can I install Linux on a USB drive and use it on another computer? Posted: 03 Nov 2021 05:17 AM PDT Long story short, college sucks and forces us to use Windows 7, I'm used to Linux and would love to have my tools on a USB drive ready, bringing my laptop to college is pain in the ass, so I thought I could have some system on a USB drive, I already have Linux with dualboot on my laptop, from which I'll do the installation, do I need to do something to make sure I don't mess up my internal HDD boot? Or I can instantly install it without any problems? I want to note that college PCs are running Core2 Duo with 1-2GB RAM (some have 1, others 2) and Intel integrated on mobo GPU, will I have problems with drivers? Or it'll be good? Also what distro do you recommend me? I'm thinking I could use Debian with xfce, since I'm familiar with Debian already and xfce and lightweight, what do you think? I'll be using it for development mainly [link] [comments] |

Typing in password kicks me back to password screen. Posted: 03 Nov 2021 11:23 AM PDT I know I posted yesterday about not being able to update my Linux Mint Cinnamon, but now I can't even get the OS to load. It's stuck on the password screen and whenever I type in my password, it just kicks me back to the start. Any help would be greatly appreciated [link] [comments] |

Installing FEH image viewer/Software not in package manager Posted: 03 Nov 2021 02:10 PM PDT System: Parrot OS 4.11 KDE Plasma version 5.20.5 running i3wm After using Ubuntu for basic purposes I switched to Parrot os and decided to go outside my comfort zone and setup i3wm. I've noticed I have extreme difficulty installing software that's not in the default package manager through the command "sudo apt-get install file_name" examples of this are feh and gedit. upon research I've noticed you can install through github clones and tar installs with the make command. Upon lots of searching and trial and error I've come up with nothing. I don't understand how to install things not in my package manager and through other install process like git and running them. My question is: how do you install feh on parrot os and can someone explain how you install software under zip or tar and know what to enter in terminal to install when you can't understand what the read.me file is talking about and the basic "./configure ---> sudo make install" process doesn't work I apologize in advance if I make no sense. Help a newbie get into linux properly. Posted: 03 Nov 2021 02:04 PM PDT I'm using endeavourOS, which is a pretty cool distro and I think is a decent gateway to arch, but after a couple of accidents I'm considering switching back to Debian, but I don't like having to use outdated drivers and software (i.e.: LibreOffice's latest stable is the 7.2 and Debian's repository still ships with the 7.0).I already tried Fedora KDE but I had a couple of problems regarding DNFDragora not being able to resolve some dependencies for Steam when converted from .deb to .rpm. I'm really new to linux but everyone kept telling me to use arch because it's stable and stuff, but I keep breaking it by just trying to use it normally (as in playing videogames through proton via steam, or updating) or doing stuff I was already able to do back in W10 (1809, when it still looked like an operative system), maybe it's just my luck (and being totally new to linux). In short, I wish to have something as stable and "easy to use" as debian (or pop_os, but it's installer doesn't make a swap partition lol) but not as outdated. I also don't care for "bloat", if some program bothers me I'll just remove it. My use case: Casual/Hardcore gaming, some times I record footage, but I'm getting more and more into Blender 3D, so I'd also like for something that supports OpenCL or that at least properly supports the latest AMD drivers (because in all distros I tried, in blender 2.9x, cycles GPU wouldn't work, despite working in windows) I don´t like really the new Gnome´s default look (at least default in Ubuntu and Pop!_os), reminds me too much of a tablet, I´d much rather use KDE or Cinnamon. But that's just an esthetic preference, if I can get gnome to look like kde/windows gui I'm fine too. Please let me know if there are other questions you need, so I can update the op. How to actually uninstall things. Posted: 03 Nov 2021 02:02 PM PDT I'm having issues uninstalling programs from my Linux. I'm running a PopOs machine, and when I install things from the distro's appstore it's very smooth, I can install, update and uninstall everything without a sweat. But not everything that I need is in the popstore, and I had to install some packages from the terminal. Such as the Oracle Virtual Machine, which I got a 32x version of the app by accident, so now I need to uninstall it and get the correct version in my machine. Problem is, because I got it using the terminal, I can't find a "uninstall" buttom to click. When I try to right click the icon of the app, my distro directs me to the popstore, which is useless because I didn't intall the app using it so it won't give me an uninstall option. Can you guys teach me how to rip this thing out of my machine? [link] [comments] |

Webcam Not Working When Listening to Audio in Loopback Module in Fedora 34/35 Posted: 03 Nov 2021 12:37 PM PDT I switched from Pop OS to Fedora 34 on my Thinkpad X1 Yoga 4th Gen, and for a while it was working great. I switched because of the early adoption of Wayland, Gnome 40, and Pipewire. I require Wayland for my setup (mixed DPI with fractional scaling on 3 monitors, with a touch screen and gestures), I stream games from both a capture card and screen capture on OBS, and I video chat with friends. I'll often have my capture card playing back audio to my headphones through a loopback module in PulseAudio so that I can hear my Discord call and my game audio at the same time from my headphones. For the most part, it worked great. Recently though, I've been having an issue where my webcam would no longer work on any app in my system (OBS, Discord, or even Cheese). It seems to happen when I have both my capture card and my webcam, and specifically when I'm having my capture card audio play back through my headphones using a loopback module in PulseAudio: My webcam isn't even available for selection in any app anymore (Discord and Cheese don't show it, PulseAudio shows /dev/video0 without the name of the webcam), and I can't unplug and replug it in because it's an internal laptop webcam. On my most recent test, my capture card also stopped working on OBS and Discord (but would work in Cheese). It hasn't seemed like a reboot would consistently fix it either, but I haven't thoroughly tested that. I also need to double check whether this happens when I don't have the loopback module loaded. This was working fine before, so I have no idea why it isn't working now. This was happening in the last few weeks of Fedora 34, and upgrading to 35 hasn't fixed it, so it doesn't look like it was a changed brought by specifically Fedora 35. Does anyone have any tips to get this working? I'd like to be able to have some way to get an input audio device playing back audio through my headphones (preferably through PipeWire), while also being able to use my webcam/capture card in OBS/Discord. I also find it strange that a PulseAudio module would be affecting my webcam. Let me know if (and how) I can provide more information! EDIT: Also in just case it affects things, I'm also using EasyEffects with a Convolver effect to make my speakers sound better. It's only applies to output sound though so idk if it would affect anything with input audio. [link] [comments] |
7.1 Virtual Surround Sound and Voice Changing Effects on POP OS ? Posted: 03 Nov 2021 12:35 PM PDT Hey Im thinking of Buying new headphones Cosmic Byte Oberon 7.1 and it offers Virtual 7.1 Surround Sound (Enabled through Software provided and NO physical button) and the software also offers Equilizer , Mic Settings and Different VOice effects for Mic. I mostly play CS GO on POP OS 20.04 LTS, so I dont know if the software will support/ install or work on Linux (If anyone used same Headset and managed to make all the features work then please tell me) and If not then how to enable all this in any other ways ? Posted: 03 Nov 2021 12:30 PM PDT After booting AntiX version 19.4 on VMWare, any attempt to format a FAT32 partition on a thumb drive fails on GParted. It doesn't matter whether it's during Installation process or when I call GParted itself. Neither does it matter whether I am using the Base or the Full version, both the 386 version. I can install AntiX on the thumb drive AFTER I have formatted it accordingly via GParted on another Distro, with a root partition, SWAP and home partition. Is it me, or is there an issue on AntiX' implementation of GParted? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Nov 2021 11:13 AM PDT ok so i have Windows 7 and KDE Neon. I have 3 partitions, /dev/sda1 is 512 mb fat32 and contains some windows files related to booting(?) (bootmgr and such), sda2 is Windows and sda3 is Linux (btw my pc only supports BIOS, no UEFI). It worked fine but now GRUB recognizes both sda1 and sda2 as Windows 7 in update-grub and the dual boot menu only shows linux and sda1 (marked as windows 7) and booting sda1 only gives me an error message. I can't boot my Windows 7 installation anymore... Should I delete dev/sda1 or what? btw i recently reinstalled Windows 7 and recovered GRUB and used https://askubuntu.com/questions/88384/how-can-i-repair-grub-how-to-get-ubuntu-back-after-installing-windows to fix GRUB so sda1 was not created by my current windows install but it did work until now [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Nov 2021 02:12 AM PDT Hi! complete Linux noob here. I was recently inclined to switch to Linux(from windows) because I was fascinated by two distros, Pop os and Garuda. I have tried pop os on the virtual machine but Garuda did not work well on VM(as they mentioned). from the way they look, I like Garuda better. But pop Os has proprietary Nvidia on its ISO. As a beginner how hard is it to have the same thing(Nvidia) going on in Garuda? Also, I heard garuda doesn't go well with low RAM, will my 8GB ram device be fine? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 Nov 2021 10:15 AM PDT I want to run a VPN but the admin user should be the only one tunneling all traffic through the wireguard interface wg0. I have UFW set up for kill switch. Powersave vs Ondemand CPU governor on battery for TLPUI? Posted: 03 Nov 2021 07:53 AM PDT Powersave governor with boost disabled locks my Ryzen 5 5500U to 1.4ghz all core, while ondemand ramps up the frequency all the way up to 4ghz depending on the load. Which cpu governor setting is better for balance of battery life and performance? Does powersave governor still boost CPU freqency with boost enabled in TLPUI? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
