[EU] Seaching for a sub-1000 EUR 2-in-1 laptop that's good for note taking and outdoor use!

    Posted: 03 Nov 2021 03:16 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

~850 EUR ideally, but I can stretch it a bit more if there's a much better model for a much better specs

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Certified Refurbs yes, used laptops not so much.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

2-in-1 for good not taking and battery life are my top priorities. Build quality has to be decent for daily travel, but nothing more.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not much. Weight is an added positive, thinness I am not very concerned.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Very mild photo editing use, some simple MATLAB programming. I'm planning to do most of these from my main pc.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good touchscreen with decent palm reject for stylus notes is the big one. Fingerprint reader would be nice, and brightness for occasional outdoor use.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Based on my previous research from reddit, lots of people recommended the HP Envy x360 or Acer Spin 5. However, the acer spin 5 especially seems to be pricier in the EU.

Thanks a lot for your advice! :)

Budget laptop for games, work, school

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 01:21 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$650 CAD budget, located in Canada

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Looking for decent performance, preferably a good Amd Ryzen or Intel Core series processor from last 2 years. Long battery life good but not most important. Prefer good, less plasticky construction.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Don't really care much, thin is nice but not important.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Prefer 15 in +

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No editing, no recent AAA, just like TF2, Halo, civ 6, etc.

    * If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Play medium or high, looking to do 50-60 fps if possible.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Backlit keyboard would be nice, hate Lenovo keyboards haha. Touchscreen not required. Prefer glossy full HD screen.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Want it to replace my Surface Pro 4, don't care about tablet mode, just want a solid keyboard and decent performance, don't need a barn burner, just something reliable. Like Asus, not big on Acer laptops.

Replacement for Apple MacBook Air M1, with Linux support, in Moscow, Russia

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:55 PM PDT

I haven't really been enjoying using the base model MBA M1, and really just want to go back to a Linux machine, I don't mind spending in the range of $200-300 more for this. My use case is pretty much coding on machines through ssh, media consumption, occasional games of DotA 2, and general productivity and office stuff (spreadsheets, overleaf, note taking), and some local coding with MATLAB. I'll preface this post by saying, I know I'm nitpicking but I really value customisation apparently, for those who have been enjoying the MBA M1 I'm glad for you, but I suppose Apple just isn't my thing, and I just bought into the hype of it being the best value laptop out there.

The negatives (for me): Even light gaming like DotA 2 sucks on low settings (bad FPS) and heats the machine, using XQuartz for seeing X windows through ssh is slow and janky, error messages are often useless and don't tell you exactly what went wrong, signing into the App Store was stuck in a log-in loop until I signed in on a friend's iPhone and logged in and entered payment info, my desk receives direct sunlight in the mornings, and this has twice heated up the machine and shut it down. The nitpicky stuff - It is non-customisable, has only two USB-C ports on ONE side, it is impossible to set different scrolling directions for mouse and trackpad without third party apps, the dock either wastes two small rectangles of screen real estate, or can be autohidden and then take a second to pop-up every single time, no intelligent hide to not obstruct windows like in GNOME, the windows don't snap into full screen or half and half when dragged to the sides, alt-tabbing doesn't show previews of the windows, the animations are cartoonish, the bezels are UNEVEN and large.

The positives (to be fair): resale value, battery life, trackpad, terminal.

Ideally I'd want a System76, but unfortunately they don't ship to Russia, and the Dell XPS has had some quality control issues I'm concerned about.

I'll fill out the form for completeness:

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase.
      Ideally around 100k rubles.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Preferably no, but not against it.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Don't care for touchscreen or 2-in-1s, would prefer portability but screen real estate takes precedence.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Thin and light would be nice, not too important tbh.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14 inch or larger.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No CAD or editing so far, I like occasionally game.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      DotA 2, CS:GO.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I'd like something that will last me long.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I want something with decent battery life, enough to last a day, a sturdy, premium build, enough power for it to not give me spinning beachballs and most importantly, Linux pls.

Help me find a new one for college? Amazon, indie company, or other?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 06:53 PM PDT

    • Total budget (In local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Country is Colombia. I hope to spend less than 2 million CO pesos, but I know this may not be possible and I'm open to raise the bar if needed. 2.6 million pesos is my hard limit.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used? Maybe? Honestly, I'm kinda worried about warranty because I don't know how much I'll need it, new laptops are better, and I don't know how spent or damaged would these used laptops really be… But if I can somehow get a good refurb, I'll get it, no problem.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? 2-in-1 is useless. I want a durable build (I'm clumsy and will somehow accidentally throw it at least once) and good performance. I usually got many tabs open, and I'm a CS student so I'll use it for programming. Battery is always nice to have, not my biggest priority. I've been looking for a laptop with at least 8GB for memory, 4 cores processor and a SSD. I filtered AMD out because I was told Intel is better and more durable, how true is this? Should I change my mind?

    • How important is weight and thinness to you? I'd love a thin, light laptop, but anything under 4 pounds will be fine.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15" or under.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I'm not a gamer, I've decided if I ever want to get into gaming or 3D modelling I'll just build a PC for that and stay with this budget laptop for everything else. Might do photo editing, but just the sort of thing that I could do in my phone.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? No touch screen, no finger prints needed. I guess I don't require the best keyboard, but if even I can notice it's bad, then I don't want it. Also, I'd rather not have a numpad, but it's not a deal breaker.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I should have bought this about 2 weeks ago when my laptop broke, but I'm indecisive as all fuck and shopping has been a nightmare. I've been scrolling down all the big chains here and seen lots of models out of stock. None of the available ones fit the criteria I mentioned above (do I have to settle?). MercadoLibre mostly has refurbs and I can't decide if they're worth it. I've been avoiding Amazon as a personal choice, but I could use it if my situation is too dire. Lastly, today I found some indie companies online making Linux laptops (I'm a Linux user) and a Slimbook seems very good, but I'm indecisive about buying from a non established brand with few reviews that doesn't have the same kind of reputation.

And I need a computer, like, yesterday. So well, hit me with your best recs.

Considering a new laptop for schoolwork.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:22 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I am considering a new laptop. I am currently a high school student. My school-provided Chromebook does not meet the needs of what I do at school, same for some of my classmates. I do have a laptop ('18 Razer Blade 15) but the battery life is abysmal, and the fans are too loud which is annoying some people close to me. Finding power outlets is scarce and the effort of plugging in and out the charger in some classes does not enhance my productivity and happiness at school.

I know how to use macOS and windows. Also, have a custom PC at home for gaming and more serious workloads.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**$2000 USD about. I am in America.
    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?**No
    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**Battery Life, Performance
    • **How important are weight and thinness to you?**Less than 6lbs
    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**13-16 inch
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**Video Editing, Photo Editing, occasional Gaming, programming
    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**Already have a custom PC at home, I need portable power.
    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**reliability
    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**I am planning ahead for the holiday season. So far, I have slimmed down to 2. One is Mac and one is a Windows laptop. Windows is Asus Zephyrus G14 with AMD Ryzen 9/rtx3060/16GB ram. Mac is a 14-inch model MacBook Pro. I already have a custom-built PC (windows 10 pro) at home for more serious things. Feel free to encourage me or make me refrain from buying a new laptop and the practicality of buying a new laptop.

Laptop for utility. School and Gaming.

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 06:54 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
1-2k USD. I'm rather flexible for budget, but likely trend towards the lower range.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yep, I just want it to work and be reliable. My own laptop is falling apart and I want something that will last. If that means new or used so be it.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I'm a college student who is an avid gamer. Build quality is important, my own laptop is falling apart on me as we speak. I'll be using it a lot, so quality is definitely important. Battery life isn't too important, just a few hours works. I'm usually within reach of an outlet, its a nice plus not needing it, but not a deal breaker. Performance is slightly more important, I'd love to play games on my laptop again, I've been relying on consoles since my laptop just can't run games, even older games challenge it.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I carry a large bag, and am relatively strong. If I get better quality with weight, I will happily lug something around. I don't care about thinness either. If it's too big for my bag, I will get a new bag.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Nothing too small, just around average size I guess. I might need a bit more for spreadsheets, but honestly, screen size isn't a make it or break it deal.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I mainly need it for school and gaming. Excel and word, maybe some more current games like mount and blade Bannerlord or Elden ring/whatever current fps.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I don't care too much about graphics, fps is important, when I play games I lag hard. I'd love to be able to play games like mount and blade banner lord/more current stuff. I'd love to have higher settings, but I've been gaming at the lowest settings I can get for years out of necessity.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Keyboard is important, I'm going to be using it a lot for spreadsheets, documents, and gaming. Reliable build quality likely trumps it all, this thing has to see me through a masters degree.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Reliability is important, I don't want to have it break on me since I'm clueless about computers. It's got to see me through at least 5 years till I can afford a replacement. I don't care about a lot of things I view as useless such as lightness or thinness. Pure utility for school and gaming basically.

14 inch vs 15 inch laptop

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 06:35 PM PDT

So I'm looking at getting the 2021 Asus Zephyrus and am not sure if 14 inches is going to be too small or not, I'll need it to be portable as I'm using it at school everyday but at the same time I don't want to have to squint or anything while gaming, is 15.6 inches still portable or would I be better off with a 14 inch?

RTX 3060ti desktop (Dell XPS 8940) or M1 Pro MacBook Pro ($1999 model)?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 07:43 PM PDT

(Note: I know the RTX 3060ti desktop is not a laptop, but for some reason there does not seem to be a subreddit for advice about both Mac & PC options)

    Which one is better?
Some things I can think of right now (+ is positive, - is negative, > is neutral):
RTX 3060ti desktop (CPU is i7-11700):
    + Better GPU
    + More app compatibility
+ My current peripherals are compatible with Windows
+ Can run x86 and x64 apps natively without the need for a compatibility layer
    + USB-A ports
    - Worse OS (personal preference)
    - Manufacturer bloatware
    - Worse CPU
    - Bad cooling system
    MacBook Pro:
    + Better OS (personal preference)
    + No bloatware
    + Better CPU
    + Portable
    + Better cooling system
    > Could theoretically run Windows apps but only through a VM so there is a performance penalty, but it means it could run apps of the two main OSes (other than Linux, but there doesn't really seem to be apps that are Linux-only to my knowledge)
    - Worse GPU (I am not sure how much worse it is)
    - Less app compatibility (but better creative apps)
    - My current peripherals are not really meant to work with macOS
    - At least there is an HDMI and SD card port now, but it still lacks USB-A (so a dongle may be needed)

Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 4

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 09:10 AM PDT

I've been looking at various laptops online, as I have to buy one this week, and I encountered a 45% sale on the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme Gen 4. For ~$1750, is an Intel® Core™ i7-11800H, RTX 3050ti, 16 GB of RAM, (more on the link) worth it? I want something sturdy and portable, that is also reliable performance-wise. Lenovo IdeaPad 5 vs Asus VivoBook K513

    Asus VivoBook K513 (I5-1135G7/512 GB SSD/12 GB RAM) - https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/asus-vivobook-k513-15-6-laptop-indie-black-intel-core-i5-1135g7-512gb-ssd-12gb-ram-windows-10/15652748

    Lenovo IdeaPad 5 (AMD Ruben 5500U/512 GB SSD/ 8 GB RAM) - https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/lenovo-ideapad-5-15-6-laptop-abyss-blue-amd-ryzen-5-5500u-512gb-ssd-8gb-ram-windows-10/15265634?source=search&adSlot=1

I will be using the laptop for work (wfh 5 days a week) and outside of work just basic things like YouTube and online browsing. Potentially playing indie games from steam occasionally as well.

I like the specs on the Asus more, but the only thing I dislike is the battery is 42 whr vs 57 whr on the Lenovo. Also I am not sure how Radeon graphics on the Lenovo will compare to Iris xe on the Asus.

Anyone familiar with Thinkbook14/15 AMD gen 3 or Thinkpad E14/E15 AMD gen 3 who can answer a question that google can't?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 06:11 PM PDT

I've been looking for a laptop to use for music production, and the specs on the Thinkbook and Thinkpad (E)14 and (E)15 gen 3s are the best I've found in that price bracket in terms of CPU/RAM/SSD. However, apparently they are new enough that there are no DPC latency test results publicly available for any of these models. People familiar with music production will know this is one of the most important variables in choosing a computer, and sometimes even very fast laptops have high DPC latency, and vice versa. Notebookcheck has some of the gen 2 numbers, but I cannot find anything on the third gen despite extensive googling. And the differences between gens and models can be quite big and often unpredictable, so the tests are really the only way to know.

Is there anyone here who owns one of these models and could run a LatencyMon test on their computer and post the results? It only takes a few minutes, you just leave it running in the background and post a screenshot of the results. I've found people asking this question on several forums, but no answers, so whoever finally figures this out will be a hero. Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

What laptop should I get for Graphic Design?

I'm looking at MacBook Air because the price is kinda reasonable but I want to know if there is cheaper out there that will be just as good.

    Dell XPS 15 Alternatives?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 05:43 PM PDT

I'm curious about what alternatives exist in the 15" mulitmedia-ultrabook-with-midrange-GPU segment. My biggest issue with the Dell is the lack of ANY USB-A ports. Yes, dongles exist, but they are far from ideal. I am only aware of the ThinkPad X1 Extreme, and it reportedly has serious issues with thermal throttling, noise, and battery life.

Which feature would make a laptop more future proof? Better CPU or more fans?

    Posted: 02 Nov 2021 05:23 PM PDT

One laptop, Lenovo Thinkpad E15 Gen 2 has an 11th generation AMD Ryzen 5500u with 6 cores but there's only 1 cooling fan inside with 2 very thin cooling pipes attached. Some ratings seem to suggest that AMD Ryzen 5500u is comparable to 11th gen core-i7-1165G7. (https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-1135G7-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-5600G/m1286124vsm1553183)

Another laptop, Dynabook Satellite Pro A50 has an 11th gen core-i5-1135G7 with 4 cores but has 2 cooling fans. So far there seems to be no negative report of overheating that some have complained about E15 when stress testing.

Which one of these 2 is more likely to last up to 6-8 years in the future? I don't play intensive games but would like to run some VMs from time to time whilst playing occasional light novels on renpy engine. Many have claimed that Lenovo E series are not real Thinkpads so might fail years down the line, is this true is purely superstition?

And for a bonus round, the Dynabook can support up to 32gb of RAM while the thinkpad can support up to 16gb of RAM.

    Thanks for suggestions.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:N/A
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? This laptop would be for basic home use, college, etc. A 2-in-1 would be cool for having the option but is not a requirement. I do prefer touchscreen! Just something well-rounded.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?N/A. I currently own a brick that overheats so anything is better.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.15"ish
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.N/A
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?As many bells and whistles as possible! Touch-screen, please!
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.I've been researching all of the recommended models but it is very overwhelming! I know I prefer a larger screen when given the option (15" vs 13"), I don't typically play video games on a laptop but heck- I could always start, and I'm in a medical program if that changes your thoughts.
