What does a good IT based resume/CV look like? Beginner question Posted: 09 Nov 2021 02:03 AM PST Good morning everyone, I'm in the process of starting my life in IT. I would like to know from your experience, what a good resume/CV looks like and would include. I am quite confident in doing a CV for teaching English as this was my profession for 10 years, however what would you guys include or exclude? Any help is very much appreciated! Thanks. Should I accept NOC position of Continue working help desk (I don’t work with end users) Posted: 09 Nov 2021 06:16 AM PST I'm on a contract help desk position, however, it's not a standard help desk. I'm not doing password resets or AD or anything. I'm helping a company replace legacy switches. I log into a switch and assign ports, VLANs and static ip addresses. That's basically what I do all day. Job is WFH Two NOC position offers, neither WFH. Job 1) I escalate tickets...I only escalate tickets. Like literally nothing network related. I think they just need someone with a heartbeat Job2) I'll be doing tier 1 and 2 work on actual network equipment. Both NOC positions are permanent jobs [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Nov 2021 09:25 AM PST I recently accepted a job that starts in February. When should I tell my current employer? Is a two weeks' notice fine? I should also state that I'll be switching careers within IT (telecommunications solution engineer to UX/product development in healthcare IT). [link] [comments] |
Is it possible to work your way up the chain without a ton of certs? Posted: 09 Nov 2021 09:02 AM PST Is it required to need a bunch of certifications to make a bunch of money in IT? If not, how is it done? I do have a degree, but chasing certifications seems to be time-consuming. Any advice on the best way to navigate your way through at a beginner's stage? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Nov 2021 08:39 AM PST I'm just mainly curious to see others input on this. After a few drinks the other night, my dad brought up to me that I should look into electrician programs/classes and that it could be really good to have both my IT background with the knowledge of being an electrician. I've been in IT for close to 10 years and I don't think I've met anyone with both set of skills. But I do see my father's point. Could be good to know for new build outs in buildings or if there is a power issue in a server room. Etc. Does anybody in this subreddit have both sets of skill or if they have come across someone who does? What would be the benefits? Again, mainly curious. [link] [comments] |
How many females get into it industry specifically for Help Desk? Posted: 09 Nov 2021 09:35 AM PST I've been looking into going back to school as a second career option funded by the government for this job option. To be honest I'm a little bit intimidated being a female in my mid-30s is this even worth it? I'm not saying that I'm a technical person but I do like a bit of technology and I like gadgets and toys. I've always been fascinated by command prompt and the whole prospects of computers and how they work and networking. If anyone with similar experience can give us some insights on this career change please feel free to drop by male or female. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 09 Nov 2021 09:14 AM PST So I recently ran into a police office while I was working at my current job and asked him for any internships which he said they do. My girlfriend definitely thinks I should do it but I don't really have any hands-on experience doing anything I.T. besides some command prompts here and there from my classes. Even with my cybersecurity classes I haven't learned much to be comfortable immediately jumping into it. Is there anything I should learn first before contacting them? Thanks in advanced for any advice! [link] [comments] |
Associates of Applied Science wanting to do Data Analytics or Cloud Computing but not sure Posted: 09 Nov 2021 07:41 AM PST Hey everyone, So I'm doing an A.A.S in Computer Information Systems at my local community college. I want to either do Cloud Computing, Data Analytics or something else afterwards, but I don't plan on going to four year college. Is this possible? What I planned on doing was starting at an entry level job and working my way up or obtaining certifications via online (DevOps or AWS). I was feeling kinda bad the other day because one of my friends is going to four year for Comp Sci, and my mom keeps pressuring me. [link] [comments] |
Employee Engagement Survey - Thoughts on Completing? Posted: 09 Nov 2021 05:59 AM PST Slighty off topic-ish, but curious what your thoughts are on company employee engagement surveys? For a little context, I just received one, and it's "uniquely" tied to me, as the email asks me not to forward it to anyone else. I like the idea of providing constructive feedback, regardless if it's good or bad, but I'm not "sold" on the idea that the feedback is ultimately tied to me, and could for whatever reason be used against me (even though they mention to honestly answer the questions). Looking for some feedback on how you view these surveys, and if you have any reservations about completing one. [link] [comments] |
Just a newbie looking for help on their resume. thank you in advance! Posted: 09 Nov 2021 07:27 AM PST Hello all, I am a current college senior and I am looking for feedback on my resume. I am also working in the IT department for a smaller school district as well so luckily I am responsible for more than just tech support. I am looking to make the transition to more advanced networking roles or entry level cybersecurity jobs. Here is the link to my resume: https://postimg.cc/phmmcq4F Thank you all for your feedback! Do information technology careers require difficult maths? Posted: 09 Nov 2021 05:29 AM PST So im not exactly very good at maths. and as of now im at 11th grade (STEM) and im really struggling understandung pre calculus and general mathematics. So i want to know, do IT careers require complex maths? [link] [comments] |
How does one find non-traditional / non-remote positions? Posted: 09 Nov 2021 08:54 AM PST I have a CS degree and have discovered I have no desire to be a software engineer. IT seems like a cool route because I do like technology and would like to help people and set stuff up and figure all that out. I really don't care much about the income so long as it's enough to live. So, my question is, how can I find more, let's say, adventurous IT jobs? I know that sounds contradictory but there's gotta be IT workers in places like resorts, museums, any vacation destination, cruise ships, science expeditions (Antarctica etc.), for film studios (big one for me I want to direct one day), anything that gets you outdoors and remote (as in remote location not WFH). That kind of thing. Curious if anybody has suggestions. For anybody reading this thread looking for a similar thing, one site I've found is CoolWorks.com but they don't have much IT stuff there (in fact only one job listing as of right now). Folks that work totally remote permanently, how did you find that position? Posted: 08 Nov 2021 01:46 PM PST I graduated college in 2019 with a degree in Information System. I've been working in IT for the federal government for almost two years now. We are working remotely only due to the pandemic. When I started with the government, I started remotely because the buildings were closed due to Covid. However I find that I really really enjoy working from home. I think with my position, they are going to try to get us back to the office in February of next year. Even though I'd like for us to stay working remotely. More sleep, more productive, saving money, are just some reasons why I would rather work remotely full-time. Plus I would like to move to a totally different state than where I live now. How does one get a position that's remote? All of the positions I have seen on job boards have been for helpdesk type positions which is what I don't do and I don't want to do. Other positions are things like cyber security which I'm interested in getting into. I actually thought about going back to school for a masters degree in it. Pandemic aside, did you have to have some type of seniority to work remotely? Years of experience? [link] [comments] |
How does everyone deal with their mental health when working from home? Posted: 09 Nov 2021 02:30 AM PST As per the post title I'm just wondering how everyone deals with their mental health? I'm finding myself more and more lying on my bed just mentally drained and bored. I signed up to a cloud guru yesterday and just couldn't get motivated to do anything. Anyone in the same boat? Do you need experience to get an internship? ————- Posted: 09 Nov 2021 09:34 AM PST This is probably a dumb quistion but… I am currently a senior in high school, I plan on studying Cybersecurity at a community college and then transfer to a 4 year to get my bachelors. Ive been reading through this subreddit and a lot of people have mentioned the importance of getting an internship while in school. I was wondering when I should try to get one(1st yr? 2nd? etc) and if it requires prior experience. (like could i not get one my first year of college before I have actually learned the stuff.) Im taking AP Computer Science in high school right now but i doubt that would count as experience lol. [link] [comments] |
Seems to be a lot of Government employees here, do you find these jobs to be rewarding? Posted: 09 Nov 2021 05:46 AM PST I have been lurking here for a while and I am seeing a common motif among respondents. A number of Users are mentioning that they work for the DoD and are enjoying at least some of the aspects like employers respecting working hours and no on call nonsense. I wanted to ask a few questions if I may. Where are you finding these jobs? How are the other aspects of the job for you, for example, pay/compensation, PTO, growth opportunities, etc? At the moment I work in state government at a University and some things about the job are great, but others leave a whole lot to be desired. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
First day at my new job being an analyst, so overwhelmed!!! Posted: 08 Nov 2021 06:01 PM PST So many documents to read, policies, steps, procedures ! It's my first day so I know it takes time, but I hate feeling lost and dumb lol [link] [comments] |
Should I apply to an on-campus job that I am underqualified? Posted: 08 Nov 2021 05:23 PM PST So I am currently working as a tech support (started August and this is my first IT job) for my local community college just earning minimum wage as a student worker. Currently, my job is not too difficult. I mostly help the senior technicians with helpdesk tickets from the school's staff such as setting up printers, imaging PCs, basic troubleshooting, and setting up workstations etc. My job as a student worker will end this semester since I am transferring to a university. The school's IT department is currently hiring a temporary position for one year with the title "IT Customer Support Assistant". To me, it pays extremely well (as a college student) if I were able to get this position. Most importantly, not the paychecks but I think one year experience working in IT would benefit me a lot as I'm majoring in CIS (Computer Information System). My supervisor encouraged me to apply to this position. However, I do not think that I'm qualified for this position. The only experience I have working in IT is just my current student job (4 months), and the A+ certificate. I'm not sure if I should apply to this position or not based on lacking of experience. TLDR: Should I apply for a job that I might be under qualified? [link] [comments] |
At a decision point, help me decide. MSP vs. In House job. Which to go with? Posted: 09 Nov 2021 01:50 AM PST So I've got an interesting issue going on. I currently work as a lead NOC analyst at an MSP. There is possibly a systems engineer position coming up that I am qualified for, liked by the team, etc. So I think I can get an offer for that position. However, I had a company look at my resume on Indeed and they are offering an in house sys admin position. Again, not to the point of offers on either position, but I'm quite far along with the in house position and very confident I could get the MSP engineer position. The MSP pays more for the engineer position, and the sys admin in house position would be lateral from a compensation and benefits perspective. One other thing, if I decline the in house position, it'll be about 30 days before the MSP engineer position opens up, so no simultaneous competing offers. For those who have worked at both, what would you do? MSPs have their draw backs, but compensation is great, the team is great. Management is MSP management, but overall it's a great company. Next step after Systems Analyst? Shooting for DevOps. Posted: 09 Nov 2021 09:06 AM PST I'm currently a systems analyst at a small (<10 employees) MSP. Been here for 2 years. Because of the size of the company my role includes a bit of everything. Help desk, systems administration, networking, Azure, etc. I would eventually like to be a devops engineer. I am currently studying for AZ-104 and learning powershell on my own time. I am familiar with python, but have not created much worth showing off. I understand I am probably not quailified for a devops role atm. What would be a good role to help me gain the necessary experience? [link] [comments] |

Are most IT jobs in cyber security? Im interested in web development… Posted: 09 Nov 2021 06:20 AM PST Hi, everyone so I'm interested in web development and someone told me there aren't a lot of jobs in that and that most IT jobs are in cyber security. Is that true? It seems like cyber security is pushed a lot, but I thought most jobs were mid level or higher positions. [link] [comments] |
Data Center: Site Engineer vs NOC: NOC Engineer in order to progress into Network Engineering. Posted: 09 Nov 2021 04:53 AM PST I'm currently doing contract work as a Site Engineer (Data Center Technician) at a DC for a reputable bank. I have a total of 2 hours commute (drive to and from) and I'm making 58k/y. I currently have some phone interviews for a NOC Engineer position which In this case is essentially a glorified help desk job however it's fully remote. If I can negotiate pay to be equal or greater then what I make now would it be more beneficial to stay where I am or make the lateral movement to the NOC position? I have desktop support and data center experience and my goal is to become a network engineer. What should I do? [link] [comments] |
