How do I run a Ethernet Cable to the second floor?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 02:18 PM PST

Okay, so here's my situation. When we were remodeling the house I live in, I took the siding off and cut some access points to run conduit through the walls to allow for a ethernet cable to be ran from behind a fireplace that was framed and built by us. The problem is using this "vacuum suck method" to get the cable to the second floor. The now problem is, 1. I never got the first ethernet cable into my room, and 2. I don't have a router, I have a modem to connect too instead (only connecting my Xbox to it) so I'm just wondering how do I get the cable up to my room - or do I take the siding off strip the conduit and run the cable itself.

New construction builders forcing Cat5e. Is that fine?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 12:17 AM PST

Builders of my new construction home are saying they have to route the house with Cat5e. Is that fine? Any suggestions to make them budge and get them to route Cat6A?

Edit: Wow so many responses! Thanks for the help everyone! I'll be talking with the builders today and making it a point for them to run Cat6 even if I have to pay for the cable myself!

Block inter VLAN traffic on UNIFI switch

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 06:20 PM PST

It appears the USW-Pro-24-POE supports layer 3. Can you block inter-VLAN traffic on this switch?

I am trying to segregate several cameras using VLANs and prevent that VLAN from communicating with other devices on other VLANs. Is this possible with the USW-Pro-24-POE?

How good is Fiber optic internet?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 03:30 PM PST

Recently had fiber internet installed and it worked great, great connection to my Xbox - could play online with no Lag or latency variation. Before, however, I always needed a ethernet cable. And now suddenly just recently the internet hasn't been great for my Xbox; I can't even play online. I check my DNS and I've got high latency and packet loss. I don't really understand why? This is supposed to be the best internet money can buy besides using Ethernet - I just plugged a Ethernet cable from home Depot into my modem all the way up to my room and it didn't help at all - I still lagged.

EDIT: is there something that could be causing the bad connection? As I said I had no problem before. Now - I can't even play online.

Out of drive bays... my options?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 04:14 PM PST

I'm running a home server on a Dell Optiplex using all 4 internal 3.5 inch drive bays. I'm trying to figure out whether an externally powered usb port is sufficient or if a sata PCIe card is strongly preferred?

And I go with a usb port what is the signicance of the watts... some are 35 watts others 90 watts... I have zero idea about power and how to determine needs/adequacy.

Same with a sata PCIe card... all sata connectors and power connectors are used... the internal power is 290 watts ... how do I go about adding additional power connectors for each additional drive and how do I know if the existing power supply can handle additional drives?

Lastly, with all internal drives used, I'm guessing I have to go with 2.5 inch drives and tape/velcro them inside?

ATT Fiber UPLOAD speed being throttled with large transfer size?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 07:25 PM PST

Ok so this one really has me pulling my hair out...

I have ATT Fiber 1Gig up and down and SpeedTest tests show that to be the case and to be stable.

I'm a video editor and as such need to upload large amount of files, regularly over 250 files with a total space of over 120 Gb of footage, and when i go to upload to a server. The upload speed just tanks to 45 Kbp/s after about 1.4GB transferred.

I'm' at a loss as there's really not a lot of information on this kind of problem. ATT swears it's not them but after having this pattern happen multiple times through different programs and it always starts fast and then slows down to essentially zero.

Is there any suggestion for this? Is it because I'm uploading one giant folder?

Need to buy a 4G modem

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 03:38 PM PST

I want to buy a 4G modem for a backup, just in case my main connection will go off for some days. The device that im looking for is a pure modem, without any other feature like AP, router, etc... But i slowly relized that most of these devices come all with more than one feature bundled in them, so if you dont need them you just have to disable them.

My ideal setup is: - put it outdoor (covered from weather) - connect external directional antennas to it - connect an ethernet cable from it to my main indoor AP/router - disable the features that i dont need

My choice fell on Teltonika RUT240 for 160€ on amazon. This device covers most of my needs but it leaves me with some doubts.

I see that its network speeds are not that high, compared to a cheaper user friendly device like the TL-MR6400. So i really dont understand the reason of the doubled price of this device. (Except for the open-OS that it runs and the fact that is an industrial product)

So my questions are: - Is the RUT240 good for my needs? - Why it costs twice as much a normal device with higher speeds? - Are there better compromises to look for?

Internet is very slow and can never get the speed it should on PC/xbox but can on other platforms....

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 09:11 PM PST

I have posted about this other places but no one can figure this out apparently. I have tried every single setting possible in the router page and nothing. So I have gb internet but it is slow as hell on my pc AND xbox only. my ps5 and phone AND a linux USB on the PC work perfectly.

I can get 800 with my phone and never even got 700 on my ETHERNET pc(plugged directly to modem). When I do a speed test it creeps slowly to about 630 and that is it and fast.com gave me about 190. Also i bought a nighthawk netgear router and in the router page it has a speed test you can do and that still is only at like 500. Doing a speed test in xbox settings, I get a 900+, what it should be but when I DL I get max 500 and it usually plummets to about 20-90 for a while. in steam I get around 20-30 megabytes and can hit single digits as well. highest I've hit is 84, it can go decent speed like 50 but then it just drops over time to slow speeds.

Same exact problems happened with the crap router that came with it, arris dg3450. Also I moved and my last internet was fiber so I had NO problems getting 1000 up and down but for some reason it just doesn't work here. Is there some settings I'm missing? I messed with all the network settings then reset them to normal. Updated ALL my drivers, reset gateway etc. Even tried safemode w/ networking. no change. I literally don't know what else to do now, I think i changed every single setting. I talked to the ISP and they said it is fine on their end. But why is the microsoft products not working and the rest is?

Any way to improve my apartments free wifi?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 05:25 PM PST

Hi, so im a noob when it comes to networking stuff like this but I recently moved into an off campus apartment that offers free wifi, its just one public network with no password or anything. The internet speed is pretty slow and can be unstable at times. I looked all over my room but there's no ethernet ports, only phone jacks, and a coax cable that plugs into the tv. I also don't have access to the router either. so is there any way i can improve the wifi speed or even establish some sort of wired connection or am i basically screwed?

Trying to set up an AP to help expand wifi

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 08:21 PM PST

I just bought a modem and router. I want to install access points in my house because it's 3 stories and the router might not cover everything.

Is it possible to plug my AP directly into my wall Ethernet ports? It's my understanding that the AP needs to be connected to the router, and the wall Ethernet connects to the modem? Would this cause issues, or would plugging it into the wall Ethernet port work just as well?

Is upgrading my router as simple as plugging it in and going?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 08:01 PM PST

I've just had to move my PC setup to another part of the house, which means I've lost my wired connection and have gone from ~700mbps to ~40mbps.

I'm currently using the default router provided to me by my ISP but am looking to buy my own. Is it as simple as replacing the router? Is there any special steps I need to consider before doing this?

On a related note, can anyone suggest a decent router for $150 or less?

Access point guidance for five floor (including basement with studio) 10,000 square foot townhouse.

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 04:05 PM PST

We just moved into a massive townhouse and are going to need connectivity on all floors, modem is in the basement and luckily the previous owners had it fully wired but were just using random ancient routers here and there. We'd like to graduate to access points and need decent speed. My husband is a gamer and will have a recording studio setup downstairs which involves large file transfers etc.

Our budget is…well…10,000 square foot townhouse budget but I don't feel any joy in buying the most expensive thing just because I can't. We're two adults and two tiny kids plus guests who visit now and again and need to work remotely but I'm guessing as we settle in we'll smarten up a few things like thermostats and other mechanicals.

    Thanks!!!!

Need to replace eero and need advice

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 07:26 PM PST

I am done with eero pro. Just done.

What is considered a really good replacement? Was thinking the r550 ruckus but those are pricey. Is there another option that would work for an older (meaning wood/plaster) 4K sqft house?

Moving out of parent's place and trying to find router/modem

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 07:08 PM PST

Hi everyone! I know pretty much nothing about routers or modems and would like some help. I'm moving to a small 420 square foot apartment and planning on getting an Xfinity 50 Mbps plan. I want to buy my own stuff because I hate renting and paying monthly and would rather just have my own stuff. What I use wifi for:

Online multiplayer games Streaming services General internet browsing

I'll have probably four devices connected to it (PS5, xbox1, laptop, phone). All of the options are kind of overwhelming and I have no idea what router/modem to get. Any advice and recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Which VPN do you prefer for speed? AirVPN for me has become extremely slow

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 06:23 PM PST

I have my router setup with OpenVPN / airVPN.

I have it configured so I can allow specific traffic to bypass the VPN and go to WAN, this is mainly for when accessing servers that block VPNs.

However I've had to add servers that I download content for, which is unnecessary. Stuff like steam or whatever.

This is because my 1.2gbps connection, only runs at 100mbps - 200 mbps when routed through AirVPN using the nearest server with the best ping.

I know it's impossible to have a VPN with the exact same speed I get direct to WAN which hovers around 1 - 1.2 Gbps, however I'm hoping that there's a VPN out there that respects privacy like airVPN but can also provide speeds closer to my actual connection I'm paying for.

Obviously privacy/anonymity is the key concern using a VPN, but I'm hoping there's one that also has faster servers.

I do not mind paying more for a better/faster VPN (if it exists).

Some subfolders and files missing within network share

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 02:15 PM PST

This is a new one on me! My network shares were working fine as far as I knew, until I just tried to access a downloaded file from within a sub folder on a network drive. I couldn't find the folder, let alone the drives within it. So, I went to the server to see if I could recover the files that I assumed that I must have deleted by mistake, but the folder is there and everything seems fine! I've rebooted both machines, all still the same. The server is running Ununtu with Samba shares. The machine accessing was running Windows 10. I'm now sat at the server, and running an app called "Remote Files Basic" on my phone, and everything feels surreal! My phone is seeing what the Win10 machine was seeing. And I've found a second missing subfolder within the same share. If I rename the folder, still can't see it. If I make a new folder, I can see that on the phone app just fine. I can even rename the new folder to be the same name as the missing one was, and that works fine. Then, I copied all of the contents of the missing folder into the new folder … on the phone app, the folder looks empty! What the heck is going on? Permissions and everything are identical. Ive even run chow -R and chaos -R 775 to make sure. I've never seen this before. Any ideas?

Router on the 2nd floor, but need camera connected via wire in the basement. I do not want to run a wire. What are my options?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 04:24 PM PST

I have FIOS/router (wifi) on the 2nd floor of the building-- it works across the entire house no problem. Now I would like to put a video surveillance box in the basement, but it requires an ethernet cable (from router to the box). I do not want to run a line from the second floor to the basement, though. Is there anything I can purchase to make it happen?

    Remote into NAS

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 03:36 PM PST

    Hi Guys,

So I'm quite new to networking as a whole and was wondering if there is a simple way for me to share access to my nas in such a way like RDP to a friend on a completely different network without a Site to Site VPN, I am currently just running an old computer with a few hard drives in it to mess around and teach myself and my friend was wanting access to it to run servers on games like Minecraft, he wants to be able to get onto the console to add mods remove mods and restart the server himself remotely, what would be the best to achieve this.

    Thanks in advance.

iptables DNAT doing more than it should?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 03:20 PM PST

    On my FreshTomato router I have terminal access, and I have the following custom iptables rules: iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -i br0 -p tcp ! -s 192.168.2.2 --dport 53 -j DNAT --to 192.168.2.2 iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING -i br0 -p udp ! -s 192.168.2.2 --dport 53 -j DNAT --to 192.168.2.2

This should be plain DNAT, right? So, it should just change the destination of packets to 192.168.2.2, and then route them accordingly.
But, it seems in my case it does more:
First of all, running dig YBFgmhaLccdozUaIBtQX.com @9.9.9.9 shows up in my DNS resolver's log (with the wrong source ip, though), so it's working, but dig also shows that it sees the response coming from 9.9.9.9.
Shouldn't DNAT just leave the response as the DNS resolver sends it? In other posts it's recommended to set up SNAT or MASQUARADE exactly because this doesn't happen.

    Secondly, if I run tcpdump -ni br0 dst port 53 or src port 53 on the router, I see that it actually does much, much more than just DNAT-ing: root@gateway:/tmp/home/root# tcpdump -ni br0 dst port 53 or src port 53 tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v or -vv for full protocol decode listening on br0, link-type EN10MB (Ethernet), capture size 262144 bytes 22:58:15.961470 IP 192.168.2.20.51104 > 9.9.9.9.53: 5656+ [1au] A? YBFgmhaLccdozUaIBtQX.com. (65) 22:58:15.961598 IP 192.168.1.1.51104 > 192.168.2.2.53: 5656+ [1au] A? YBFgmhaLccdozUaIBtQX.com. (65) 22:58:15.962400 IP 192.168.2.2.53 > 192.168.2.1.51104: 5656 NXDomain 0/0/1 (53) 22:58:15.962485 IP 9.9.9.9.53 > 192.168.2.20.51104: 5656 NXDomain 0/0/1 (53)

What is happening here? I haven't added any other iptables rules by myself.
My goal is to redirect all DNS queries to my resolver, but now I'm primarily interested in the weird behavior of the DNAT target, which I might just misunderstand.

    wifi mesh question

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 02:37 PM PST

hello i bought this wifi mesh system https://www.mercusys.com/en/product/details/halo-s12 hoping it would solve my wifi range issues and to my surprise when connecting the nodes wirelessly they can only connect to the main node connected to the router but cant connect to each other.it was my understanding that mesh nodes communicate with each other like this https://www.linksys.com/resources/img/resource-center/whole-home-wifi/one-network-seamless-roaming.jpg and not only with the main node.

So i was wondering if other mesh systems work the same way or i can connect main node to node to node to node etc?So far ive been using router->wifi repeater->wifi repeater to get the signal where i want it and i thought mesh would work the same way but with 1 SSID and without the need to manually switch networks when i move. What i am trying to accomplish is get the signal from one house to another located about 30 meters away. There are 5 brick walls between the router and the second house. The 2 repeaters did the job because i can connect 1 repeater to the second then the second to the router all wirelessly but can i do that with mesh system?thx

    Student flat router purchase

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 02:28 PM PST

Hey there, my friends and I are making our first foray into the flatting world and as the only tech-inclined person amongst them, it's fallen to me to set up the network. The problem is, I've never really looked into how this works all that much so I'm having difficulty figuring out what we need in a router.

For some information, there are 7 of us in the flat. We are in New Zealand so that affects prices and availability of things. I'm most likely the only heavy internet user but some of the others may use quite a bit. We've already decided that we're going to be on a gigabit plan, still just figuring out which ISP.

In terms of the router, we're looking at a budget somewhere between $250 and $500 NZD.

If anyone has any advice on what our setup should be it would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

    Edit:

Here's some additional information to help.

The property is 5000sqft and two storeys. The house is coax wired with outlets in 3 of the 7 bedrooms and also the lounge and dining rooms. Internet usage will be multiple devices downloading files, watching videos, streaming music etcetera. At most there would only be 4 people gaming at once and nobody would be live streaming.

We are getting fiber and I need some advice on router specs and options please (details within)

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 10:28 AM PST

After years of trouble with the local broadband company, we have found a fiber company that will bring a line to our home. They are bringing it into the box at the end of November, and I am going to need a router. My new fiber provided recommended the TPLink AX1800, but with the caveats that it's an older router and that they do not offer any sort of tech support with setting the fiber up to the router, so it's a "Buy at your own risk" situation. Because of that, I wanted to reach out and maybe get some more details and options. Here are our living/working details:

My wife works in the basement, and I have a gaming setup down there. This is where the fiber is coming into the house. We will connect those two machines to the router via ethernet, but everything else will be wifi.

The rest of the house is upstairs. We have an NVidia Shield, multiple phones, and multiple laptops connected at all times (we do homeschool during the day, my in-laws live with us and stream television literally all day, and our phones have to use wifi because we have no cell-phone coverage in our area).

I want a bit of future-proofing with this if at all possible. I'm relatively tech-savvy, but not really network-tech-savvy, so don't want to have to set up multiple times over the next few years if a router gets phased out and a newer, bigger, better one comes knocking.

So what kinds of recommendations are out there for a router that has LAN ports & wifi, AX, at least dual-band, and... that's all I really know about! Any other info you could help me look into would be greatly appreciated!
