Posted: 03 Nov 2021 12:14 PM PDT I'm still in high school, but I basically take care of my families network situation. I'm not a pro (like, at all), but I've saved my dad countless technician visits, and I've even got my own little plex server set up. We've been building a house for the last 8 months while we rent, and my dad has just informed me, a few days before we move in, just how bad our internet situation is. Comcast is being Comcast and taking forever to get a permit for our house. They told us it could take up to 90 days, that was a month ago. Century Link DSL is our only option, but the technician who came out said it's one of the oldest hubs in the area, it maxes out around 2 mb/s I don't think my dad realizes just how awful 2 mb/s is. Apple TV's, Rokus, desktops, game consoles, laptops, etc will all become pretty much useless for anything outside of light web browsing. 3 people doing online school work at the same time is going to be painful. Is there anything that can be done, anything my dad can try to get Comcast to move faster, or is my family just gonna have to live off physical media and cell service for a couple months? We've had two instances in the past where Comcast straight up told us we couldn't get service where we lived, and both times we got service just by getting a technician out and staring at them long enough. Wondering if this could be a similar situation. I'm not trying to paint this as a huge deal, at most it's a pain the ass for a couple months while we wait for slow old Comcast. However, like I said, things like schoolwork are gonna be a nightmare, and it's gonna make a lot of things useless for a couple months. If there's a way we can get anything else, even just a little faster, it would go a long way. Edit: I just came across a very interesting comment on an old comcast thread. It says that we could use wireless antennas to bridge the connection with our neighbors? We're good friends with them, they live right across the street, and they have comcast. I could talk to my dad about splitting the cost with them to upgrade to gigabit and then bridging our connections? No idea how to wirelessly bridge a connection though. Edit 2: It's looking like Verizons 4G plan might save our asses! 5G is available in our area according to Verizons coverage map, but I guess we still can't untilize the 5G home internet according to the availability website? Either way 4G LTE home internet is for sure available and we can get it for $40 a month since we're paying Verizon customers. [link] [comments] |
Hitting close to 940mbps continuously with CenturyLink, should I be concerned? Posted: 03 Nov 2021 11:19 AM PDT We recently moved to a new house and had a phone line added in addition to our internet. The tech was warning me that he saw spikes of us hitting close to 940mbps concurrently. Streaming 4k should only use about 20mbps so he said to run an antivirus check (we have a few pc's all on windows, so it has windows defender) I don't have a home server, we only stream 4k on one TV, doorbell cam, game on 4 devices, and the kids have tablets, 2 cell phones, we download new games sometimes but that usually tops out at 30mbps for each pc, and we don't torrent anything. I'm concerned because he said it could be considered "abusive" usage, which I don't know why because we pay for it those speeds. Is there a way for me to monitor what could possibly be pulling in that much? Whether it be through the modem, or a 3rd party.. When I run a speed test I get 200-320mbps, but would that cause the spikes he's seeing? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Nov 2021 09:20 AM PDT I am looking to upgrade some of my cables and it is time for the ethernet cables. Should I go for Cat7, or is 5 or 6 is sufficient? These will go directly into the AVR, consoles, Shield, etc. in a typical home theater set up. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Nov 2021 05:27 PM PDT Hello, i'm moving in with a friend fairly soon, and his house is fairly large ( 3500+ sq ft), he is also a crypto miner, and I don't want to have to mess with his routing setup in his mining room. I'd like to extend coverage upstairs and in the den, as those areas are fairly weak and inconsistent for my PC. I'm stuck between buying range extenders, WAP, or Something like Google nest/mesh. I need fast speeds because I will be attending a BootCamp, and play games on my PC. What's the best option here? [link] [comments] |
bufferbloat issues, new router? I need help! Posted: 03 Nov 2021 11:22 AM PDT I've had my ISP come out 3 times and i'm not sure a 4th time will help because they don't seem to know what they're doing... Doing my own research it seems like I might have bufferbloat issues and I really need help. Equipment- Modem - Arris Surfboard SB6183 Router - TP-Link TL-WR1043ND ISP - Vyve Broadband Internet Speeds - Cable 200 up / 15 down Here are two DSL results. http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest/69934961 My router is old but i managed to find some kinda Bandwith control option in it that I've tried out. These are results when I try to use that. http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest/69940652 Also the internet is fine during the night but terrible during the day. [link] [comments] |
Tp-link ac1900 crashes immediately when using 5ghz band. Posted: 03 Nov 2021 07:20 PM PDT This problem is absolutely infuriating and I'm pulling my hair out. For as long as I've owned this router I cannot use the 5 gigahertz band. Any device that connects to it will immediately cause the router to crash and not even restart. All connections are kicked off including wired. Is there a setting that I missing. It is broadcasting 2 SSIDs one is "wifi" the other is "wifi 5ghz".. I cannot connect to the latter and get full speed out of my 800 Mbps plan... only getting about 75mbps from 2.4ghz band [link] [comments] |
Does Powerline AV2 1000Mbps work on 1965 electrical wiring (Ontario, Canada)? Posted: 03 Nov 2021 07:20 AM PDT I have a 1Gbps connection but in some corners of my place the speed is 40Mbps and I am not willing to have any extra wifi but I am not sure if it will work on old wiring. Recommended mesh router that supports OpenVPN? Posted: 03 Nov 2021 07:10 PM PDT Currently have 3 Google Wi-Fi access points deployed in my home (2800 sq. ft., single story). I'm wanting to upgrade to a new system that supports OpenVPN so I can configure SurfShark easily on the router to protect all devices on the network. As an added bonus, support for faster Wi-Fi speeds would be welcome also. I have FiOS 500/500 and throughout my home I can usually only get 100mbps speeds over Wi-Fi unless I'm right on top of an access point. What do you suggest? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Nov 2021 06:30 PM PDT I am a new Cable customer and want to make sure the signal coming into my modem is good. I found this guide (https://www.speedguide.net/faq/what-cable-modem-signal-levels-are-considered-good-78) which states my downstream power should be between +- 15dbmv. Checking mine are all between 0 and 2.0 (https://imgur.com/a/ie5dViW). Is the guide wrong? I get very inconsistent download speeds from different sites, so it's hard to tell if I am having issues with the down connection. Weird LAN issues w/ unmanaged switch Posted: 03 Nov 2021 05:37 PM PDT Hi /HomeNetworking, I'm having a very strange behavior on my local network. I searched for its symptoms online and can't seem to find a match anywhere. I'm a software developer but not specialized in networking, so I'm not sure what to do here. I have a Ubiquiti Dream Machine router connected to my modem, one of the ports on the integrated UDM switch goes into my wall and out into my closet where I have a Netgear GS108 8-port unmanaged switch. In that switch I plug cat5e cables that drop into the other room in my house. The issue is that sometimes, seemingly at random, my whole network drops. I can get everything back online by unplugging the unmanaged switch, which makes me thing something weird is going on there. If I immediately plug the cable back in, everything drops again, but I can make it stable by unplugging every cable from the switch and plugging them back slowly one by one. I know this is not a router, modem or switch issue, as I replaced all of those already. I'm going crazy here trying to debug this. Any tips? [link] [comments] |
what networking system should i set up Posted: 03 Nov 2021 03:15 AM PDT I have 4 oculus quest 2s and 4 pcs (2 wifi 6, 1ac, and one desktop with only ethernet - all laptops have ethernet) that the quests will wirelessly stream from. all playing in the same large gigantic room. i dont want to run ethernet cable to all the pcs as im playing in a shared party room my condo building has so i have to install and remove all my equipment every time i play. what id like to do is wireless stream each headset as i hate cables. ive found airlink only allows you to operate airlink on one pc per network system so im planning to use virtual desktop on 3 pcs and 1 with airlink. what network equipment should i use to get the best experience for less than $150? the play areas are such that the wan connection port is located in an area where i can only fit one play area/pc. the other 3 areas are all decently close together. i dont want to have to run 3 wires from the wan port location to the 3 pc location as its cumbersome with all the furniture in the area and that i have to install/uninstall things every time. if its retractable, one wire would be ok. i dont mind multiple cables between the pcs at the 3 pc location. i was thinking of getting the netgear nighthawk mk63 mesh system with 1 router and 1 satellite cause it was on sale for $110. but that only has 1 lan port per satelite. i could get an ethernet switch and plug it into the satellite so all thre of those pcs wouls plug into the satellite using the switxh but doesnt that split the ethernet bandwidth? thanks. Tired of eero pro, need recommendations Posted: 03 Nov 2021 05:20 PM PDT I have five eero pro 6 and a beacon and tired of the performance. What are others using for mesh in larger homes? I had amplifi hd when it first came out and then moved to eero. Now eero doesn't work as well. While not a gamer I do have video servers that I want to stream 4K via Plex to my tv's. Unifi ecosystem still worth it? Or go with Omada? Posted: 03 Nov 2021 05:17 PM PDT Hi there, since the breach what has been your opinion on buying into Ubiquiti at this point? If you intend to host your own Unifi and never touch their cloud service, are their switches/cameras/APs still a good, secure ecosystem? I was looking to buy their XG 6 PoE as a core switch for the house and stick with their software ecosystem. But even without having any of their equipment connect to the cloud, I'm still iffy about the severity of their breach. In come: cheap asian clone Omada, from tp link. They've got this juicy "coming soon" switch on their site with specs like it's ready to take on the XG 6 PoE. I'm wondering if that would be the better option long term... again, especially considering the breach. Can't seem to find too much info on this coming soon model, or really much info on Omada and tplink. Opinions? Ideas? Much appreciated, thanks y'all! [link] [comments] |
Best wifi system for a hostel and garden/land? USA Posted: 03 Nov 2021 04:08 PM PDT I am building a hostel from scratch and was looking into a simplistic wifi solution. The hostel will be around 300m2 with 4 rooms and the supervisors/ my room will be on the 2nd floor, eventually we plan to put guest rooms on the 2nd floor and possibly a 3rd floor later, the roofs are flat so people would spend time on them. We have 830m2 of total land space and the guests are free to roam it, we will have a garden about 20m away from the hostel and would want coverage to reach all areas of the property. Im guessing a wifi roof antenna would work for that? I currently have an Asus AC86U that i would put in the lobby and then i was thinking of getting another to put in the 2nd floor supervisor room which would connect through in wall cat5/6 and be sort of a mesh network. For the guest rooms, i wouldnt want routers in them but if its a requirement to have great wifi i can find a way to hide them. Which would be the ideal solution that is simple with a single SSID? I plan to have a wired camera system but we might have some connected to wifi in order to monitor other areas of the property. We intend to build the property with structural insulated panels SIPs. Noob question: Two routers, one home? Posted: 03 Nov 2021 04:05 PM PDT Hello, I have a problem with the wifi range of my current router. I want to buy a desk and set up a work area but it is out of the wifi range from where the router is currently located. Would it be possible to set up a second router in the part of the house that is currently out of range and have two routers working at the same time or would this run into problems? Asus AX86U disconnecting from Internet randomly Posted: 03 Nov 2021 03:57 PM PDT Hi I'm using Xfinity Internet Gigabit and I'm using the newest xfinity modem they have and have it connected to the Asus AX86U and for some reason the router disconnects from internet all the time and the modem says that it's still getting connection and is online. So not sure what to do. I contacted asus and all they've been telling me is change the channels and change the frequency in the WAN settings from aggressive mode to continuous. Not sure what else to do or just send it out for repair. I'm also using the most updated Merlin firmware on it. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Nov 2021 03:37 PM PDT Hi guys. I'm running ATT fiber using the ATT modem/router. For reasons I won't get into, I can't replace the ATT unit. My home has ethernet all over the place upstairs but 0 connections downstairs. I'm trying to run ethernet to my Plex server (Nvidia Shield) downstairs. I purchased 2 GoCoax MOCA 2.5Gb adapters. Obviously I connected power to both, one into the router via ethernet, and into the wall coax upstairs. The other into the Shield via Ethernet, and the other MOCA port into the wall via coax. I seem to have no communication. I am not using this with a TV. We got rid of cable TV and are just using fiber internet. Thanks in advance for any help. [link] [comments] |
Given some networking equipment, what can I do with it? Posted: 03 Nov 2021 03:31 PM PDT Hey everyone, hopefully, this is the right subreddit for what I am asking. I got some ~10-year-old networking equipment from someone and I am very new to all this, so just wanted to ask here what I can do with them and how to actually set it all up or at least what each device does or anything like that. Any information or help is useful! Here is the list of what I have and a picture of an unidentified device: Dell PowerEdge 1750 2x Dell PowerEdge 1650 2x Infoblox-1050-A Juniper NS-5GT Juniper NS-5GT-001 Juniper NS-5GT-WIRELESS 3x Juniper SSG 5 Juniper J2300 Netscreen 208 Netscreen 10 Netgear DS516 Netgear FS524 Sun Netra X1 Juniper DS108 Netscreen IDP Bypass Sorry for the long list/post, but thank you in advance! Posted: 03 Nov 2021 03:30 PM PDT I have brand new 75Ft CAT6 ethernet cable hooked up from my Rogers Modem to my Desktop Computer, but I only get 35mb/s down and 20mb/s up. Since my Desktop is also wireless, bonus testing without the cable: 7-12 down and 5-12 up. The advertised speed is 500 down and 20 up. What's happening? I thought I was getting conned but if I use my phone or my brother's, OR even my laptop, I get easily over 100 down, almost 200 down in my room (not even near the modem!). What's even weirder is that back when I was with Bell, I would get over 100 down on my Desktop... WIRELESS. Huh!? How does that make any sense? I remember even at one point having both Bell and Rogers installed when I was changing services, and those numbers above still held up, so maybe it's not a broken NIC issue? Lol I don't really get what's going on here, but I would seriously appreciate any help. TL;DR: Wired Desktop connection with Rogers getting 35mb/s Down and 20mb/s Up, but Download should be closer to 500. Wireless connection with Bell getting over 100 Down. Help? [link] [comments] |
Suddenly Frequent Dropped connections | SB8200 | Cox Ultimate 500 Posted: 03 Nov 2021 03:28 PM PDT Hi folks, I've been trying to figure out what my issue is all of a sudden. Starting around midnight today, I began dropping internet connection frequently, at least 9 times as of this post. Sometimes for a minute, sometimes 15+, other times it took a modem reboot to get it back. Cox support had me reboot the modem (thanks for telling me how to do something I already know), claimed there are/were no outages in my area, and they don't see anything wrong. Their suggestion -- get a new modem. I very much doubt I need a new modem where it's only a year old, so I'm hoping someone that knows more than me can take a look at the my modem logs and tell me if anything seems out of the ordinary. Using my own modem/router combo with Xfinity Comcast Posted: 03 Nov 2021 11:29 AM PDT Moved houses and had to switch from AT&T Fiber to Comcast. I need to use the provided equipment, otherwise the monthly costs increases. The provided gateway is TECHNICOLOR CGM4331COM. https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/broadband-gateways-userguides. Any suggestions, or should I just leave it as is? What should I do in case I need to connect more than 6 devices? It has only 6 ports. [link] [comments] |

Wish to Activate More Pre-Installed Ethernet Ports Throughout House Posted: 03 Nov 2021 02:51 PM PDT Hello! The house that I have moved into has CAT5e ethernet ports in the walls in every room (except the bathrooms) of the house. Currently, only one of them works in the upstairs back room. I'm determined to get them all working so I don't have to rely on wifi for things like streaming on TVs in different rooms. The internet runs on fiber and I've located the panel in the garage where the fiber line comes into the house and is converted into ethernet here: Garage Panel The wall ports throughout the house look like the following:Wall Port 1Wall Port 2Wall Port 3Wall Port 4 (Active) I've unscrewed them from the walls and all of them are wired the same, even the active one. I'm assuming there has to be a way to get them all working, even if I had to add in a switch somewhere? One thing I attempted was unplugging the white ethernet cord from the fiber/ethernet converter, plugging in my router's ethernet cord, and then connecting the white ethernet cord back into slot 1 in the back of the router. This provided me with wifi from the garage and the 1 active panel upstairs still worked, but none of the others seemed to. Close up of said ethernet cord I've checked the attic and under the house, but didn't see anything else. I'm a bit lost and could use some guidance on this. Appreciate any thoughts! EDIT: The other CAT5e cables have been found outside! I appreciate everybody's help, especially u/undertheshadows69 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Nov 2021 02:41 PM PDT Hi there, I have the CenturyLink 1Gb internet and want to be able to enjoy the high speeds throughout the house, but looks like the 5ghz signal is limited to just the living room where the modem/router is located. The CenturyLink modem/router I have is C4000XG and it is centrally located. I am hoping to put two wifi range extenders on each side of the house. I have a good access to the attic so was thinking of running ethernet wires close to the desired locations and hooking them up with a wires rather than relying on the wifi connection from the main router. Two questions I have - is it worth the effort? If yes, which range extenders support the wired input and are worth consideration? Or should I just buy two routers that can be setup as access points?
