Android 12 will always open non-verified links in the default browser

[Guide] How to fix horrible handling of links on Android 12

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 03:18 PM PST

As many have noticed, Android 12 changed the handling of links significantly.
    1. You now have to choose your default web browser. If you don't, it will automatically select Chrome.
    2. Only "verified links" (new feature in Android 12 - website owners decide which apps can open links automatically) can be opened in external apps. Everything else will always open your default web browser, unless you manually approve each link in settings.
    3. You can't allow multiple apps to handle the same link (if it was approved manually by you, at least), which means that you can't choose from a list of supported apps when you open a link.

There is an easy solution for all of this.
    1. Install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aboutmycode.betteropenwith
    2. Go to Settings - Apps - Default apps, and set this app as your default web browser.
    3. Go to Default apps - Opening links, and disable "Open supported links" for each and every app that has "verified links".
    4. [Optional] Adjust "Better Open With" settings - enable dark mode, disable countdown timer...

Now you can always select an app/browser for every link that you open, like in previous versions of Android. And you don't need to "approve" any links manually.

With Android 12 officially released no one is talking about how Material You will fit into 3rd party apps?

    Posted: 11 Nov 2021 07:42 PM PST

One of the things I've been thinking about lately is basically that Material You really only fits into existing ecosystem because most of the apps updated are just basic tools. For the most part, they're pretty much all just apps that don't really need a distinctive brand identity, things like clocks or a gallery or phone app.

Even if they do have something distinctive like Gmail, it doesn't really matter because you're already familiar with them.

Is anybody really thought about how this new design language is going to integrate into apps that want to retain their branding?

What would a Facebook app look like? Would it retain the same Facebook blue but with accents based on your wallpaper everywhere?

What would he Yelp! app look like? Everything in it is normally red?

Are there even third party applications that have added support for material you yet? Wherever wherever it is in your life

PSA: Typing indicators showing up in Google Chat as of today

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 03:18 PM PST

I and several of my friends noticed that typing indicators have started showing in group chats in Google Chat. Now if we can just get read receipts in group chats as well we'd be approaching parity with Hangouts for most of the functionality that I care about. Progress!

[Discussion] Androids billing cycle is only useful for postpaid users

    Posted: 10 Nov 2021 11:40 AM PST

Androids billing cycle is fixed, one month from a selected date.

But it's of little use in countries where majority of people use prepaid plans. Many of those plans have validity that's not equal to one month. My mobile operator doesn't offer a single plan whose validity is one month.

It is a good thing that android has a option for custom Data limit, it should also add a option for custom Billing cycle
