    Which laptop is better?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 03:48 AM PDT

    I'm Portuguese and in my second year of college and need a new PC for programs like Adobe Illustrator, Java Script, Photoshop.

    I've searched a lot of computers and have come across two that are in my budget (500 euros). The LENOVO IP 3 15ALC-640 and the ASUS VivoBook F413EP-31AM3PB1.

    They are basically the same, but the Lenovo has the AMD RYZEN 5 5500u and the ASUS has the Intel Core I3-1115G4 Dual Core. Which processor is better?

    Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro AMD or wait for M2 Macbook Air?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 02:52 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    2000sgd max

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

    How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    As a student I need my laptop to perform well in daily tasks, have great battery life, and not give me any build quality issues for the next 3 years.

    How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Quite important.

    Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Any screen size is fine, but if the M2 Macbook Air is coming out with 13 inch screen, I'd rather the screen on the Yoga Slim 7 Pro.

    Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Will probably do some gaming in the future, but if I can't run any games on my laptop, so be it.

    If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

    Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Good keyboard, I honestly don't care about track pad since I use a mouse, I am against touchscreen though neither of these laptops will have one, prefer face unlock over fingerprint reader. The ability to run Linux is also a plus, I currently have Linux running on my current laptop.

    Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    I know the M2 Macbook Air is not out or announced yet, but I'd just like to hear your thoughts whether it's worth waiting for. I don't urgently NEED a new laptop, I just really want a new one, and I prefer not to wait until next year for it if thats the case. If I buy the M1 air, it could very well be outdated within a month but if I wait, I could very well be waiting until mid 2022.

    Yoga Slim 7 Pro is available here for sometimes as low as 1800sgd for a pretty much maxed out config: Ryzen 9 5900HS creator edition, 16gb ram, 1tb ssd, 14 inch 2.8k 90hz 400nit 16:10 100% dci-p3 OLED display, Mx450 GPU, and great build quality all around. Though I would definitely appreciate having the best display probably on any laptop ever, I don't think I could make much use out of a Ryzen 9 5000 series processor. Still nice to have this performance overhead. Brand new from Lenovo.sg it costs 2200sgd and has been out of stock since last week, no indication of whether it will be in stock again.

    Based on current leaks, do you think it is worth it for me to get the Yoga Slim 7 Pro or wait for the M2 Air?

    Query regarding first gaming laptop

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 01:09 AM PDT

    I purchased the Asus TUF Gaming A15 (2021) with Ryzen 7 4800H and RTX 3050 yesterday at an excellent price, with the plan to use it for at least 5-6 years for tasks like photo and video editing, office work, and light gaming. Was it worth it considering the 2021 Legion 5 will be coming out soon with Ryzen 5 5600H and RTX 3050? Legion was my preferred choice earlier, but I wasn't sure if it would have arrived at such a competitive price.

    Laptop for university + media consumption - £1.2k max budget - UK

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 12:55 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Preferably £1000 (GBP) but can stretch to £1.2k
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      no
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
    • performance 2. battery life 3. build quality (sturdy and lasts long)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Cant be too thick and heavy will prefer something on the lighter end
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      I would prefer a 15inch screen
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      I will be doing some light digital art so using clip studio paint and also programming (taking a CS degree)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      not the main priority but it would be a plus if i could play games like genshin impact.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
    • a backlit keyboard
    • 16GB ram
    • at least 512gb SSD
    • the display has to be good so as in around 100%srb and at least 300 nits
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      I was looking for many laptops but the ones inside this budget either have 8GB ram or 250 nit display with like 45% NTSC which isn't great for me. Furthermore, if i do find a good laptop its not available in the Uk. I'm mainly going to use this laptop for university work so programming and then also watching Netflix and creating art so having a good 15inch display is important to me. I have looked at 2-in-1 laptops i.e. the Lenovo yoga 7i 15inch but I'm worried about the hinges breaking outside of the warranty period.

    Laptop for graphics/drawing/video touchscreen13-15 inch under $2000 in Australia

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 08:54 PM PDT

    Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Max $2000 AUD purchasing in Australia

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

    How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    My priority is how well it will work for my purpose, how well I can draw on it, how portable it can be. Not fussed on looks but would like it to be not too breakable as I will be taking it to set.

    How important is weight and thinness to you?

    I am happy for it to be light if it is strong but I do want to be able to plug USB devices in so not too thin.

    Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    at least 13 inches not bigger than 15

    Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming?

    Illustrator, photoshop, premiere, Blender, After effects, sketchUp, office suite. Random embroidery software (Embird / inkstitch)

    If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Not going to game on this primarily but it would be a plus if I could play Destiny 2 at all.

    Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Touch screen with good pen sensitivity, as many USB ports as I can get, headphone jack would be great.

    Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    I was looking at Surface Book 3 15 inch, Intel core i7, 32GB RAM, 512GB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce Which costs AU$3,458.95 and wondering am I paying for a name here? Is there a laptop similar good specs for less money? It doesn't have to clip off the keyboard like this one does.

    1000 euros and I need a multitasking beast!

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 12:11 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      1000 euros, the Netherlands
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes, refurbs are fine.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      Performance -> battery life -> build quality
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Shouldn't be too heavy, but overall no problem if it is.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14 inch and MAXIMALLY 15.6
      Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Photo editing and a A LOT of multitasking; I'm talking about 100 tabs of Chrome, 9 instances of Photoshop, 15 of Word, 7 Excel files, 19 Powerpoints, 27 PDF's, Outlook, Spotify, Bluestacks all at once and it should be snappy. Maybe occasionally a game that it should run smoothly at high FPS/graphics, like Rocket League or Borderlands or something.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Assume that the biggest game I want to play would be something like GTA 5, high graphics, 60+ FPS. I don't normally game because of my shit laptop, so I don't know what games are heavy and which are not. Skyrim at 120 FPS high settings, maybe? I have no idea what is reasonable when it comes to games. Witcher 3 at 60 FPS, medium-high graphics?
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      Touchscreen is optional but a big plus;
      16+ GB ram;
      256+ GB SSD, absolutely no HDD!!!;
      No integrated graphics card, please. I was thinking about an RTX 3060 and up.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      Nothing to add, thanks in advance for the suggestions! Don't say that these requirements are not in line with budget, I have come across these specs with this budget, but only in foreign countries...

    Mathematics grad student in Australia, looking to get a new laptop after my thinkpad x1 carbon died on me. That laptop had 8 gigs of RAM and would be interested into upgrading to 16 gigs. I've been a bit overwhelmed while looking at new laptops so some help would be great.

      Somewhat important as I will cycle with it to and from uni, but can be somewhat more bulky than my previous laptop
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      No interest in gaming

    Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Bluetooth headphone compatible and can connect to my xbox controller

    Engineering student looking for a budget laptop

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 02:42 PM PDT

    Hey I'll start of with the best laptop I've found so far which is the Dell Latitude 7380 and yes I know the one I linked doesn't come with a battery or a charger which is not a problem, I can install them myself. I'll also maybe wait for like half a year before buying so if it's slightly over budget then maybe the prices would come down a bit by that time.

    • Total budget :
      300€ish + shipping and import taxes to the EU
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      I'm looking for used/refurb, don't want to pay extra for a new one
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      13-14 inch, preferred 13.3". Other factors not as important, would be cool if it had good battery tho. A good trackpad would be a requirement as well (good as in a big enough size).
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      The lighter the better, but again, not very important, since I'm currently running a Dell n5110, which is a beast to carry around.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      The same that I specified 13-14"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Would need to run AutoCAD Inventor, SolidWorks, Altium Designer, Matlab. Would be cool if i could play some easier to run games, but again, not a requirement.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Not important. But maybe Insurgency and War Thunder.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      At least 2 full sized USB ports. Would also like HDMI or DP. More than 256GB of storage and upgradeable.
      • Bonus points (would love the features, but not a requirement):
        • Not soldered in RAM, to upgrade to 16GB or 16GB soldered
        • 2 RAM slots
        • Good battery
        • Good display (bezels don't matter a lot)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      I'm an engineering student looking for a reliable laptop for years to come. The main use of the laptop would be in school when I'm carrying it around, since I have a PC at home where I do most of my stuff. I'd like a machine that would be upgradeable as I like to tinker with stuff. I don't know whether integrated graphics can handle the CAD programs, but I don't know if they put GPUs in such small devices and this GPU question is also the main reason for the post.

    Thank you guys for you time.

    Looking for a new laptop but don't even know where to start- Any advice at all appreciated!!

    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 06:18 PM PDT

    For a brief bit of context- I'm 24 and have had the same MacBook Pro since I was 17. Since I've never had another laptop and I definitely don't want another apple product, I was hoping I could get some help finding something that meets my qualifications.

    I need you guys to know that I'm a bit clueless, so I might need to just summarize what I'm looking for without using the form.

    Requirements

    • Budget under $1000 USD (USA currency) • Best specs for my budget is probably most important, given that my budget is on the lower side • Relatively "newer" model • Not a brick / super heavy • Must run Windows • Screen size at least 15.6" • 8GB RAM • Must have built-in webcam • No touch-screen laptops • Decent quality audio ouput

    Preferences but not requirements

    • Good battery life • Medium thickness and weight, slimmer is preferable • Backlit keyboard • Sleek appearance

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I do intend on running audio editing software, and some "bigger" games such as subnautica, resident evil, apex, etc.
    I was initially looking into a gaming laptop (specifically the ASUS F17 gaming laptop) but I'm turned off by the comments regarding it being very bulky/heavy and the fan being incredibly loud nonstop. I'm also not a fan of how most laptops advertised as "gaming" laptops are often a bit flashy for my taste, and I'd want something relatively plain/cute/normal that I could also use for work/school.
    Basically, I'm looking for a laptop that will allow me to run "larger" programs, has decent storage, the best graphics and audio I can get for my budget, and is lightweight enough that it can be easily mobile.
    Thank you so much if you've read all of this!! My apologies in advance if this is an unreasonable request (I genuinely wouldn't know) but feel free to give me any suggestions even if they don't meet everything I mentioned! <3
    Laptop options for a kid for some games?
    Posted: 02 Oct 2021 05:54 PM PDT
    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
    Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:!
    $500 USD
    Are you open to refurbs/used?
    No.
    How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
    Performance is most important, followed by battery, but battery not really important.
    How important is weight and thinness to you?
    Not at all
    Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
    N/A.
    Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
    Yes to games- Sims 4 with expansions, Star Stable, Planet Zoo
    Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
    Reliable, can play the games she wants
    Memory: I don't know what is needed. Video Output: I don't know USB Ports: Yes OS: Windows Ten.
    Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
    My daughter (9) has been using our very old Mac desktop. It is starting to have too many issues - it is older than she is, so we are looking to possibly get her a laptop for Christmas. She plays Star Stable and the Sims 4 on it, and plays Planet Zoo on our better Windows desktop. She would love to play Jurassic World too. Is there something in this price range that would work for her? Or even a desktop? I don't want to spend a bunch since she is a kid in case she is hard on it. I am still considering if I should get myself something new and give her my Predator that is 6 years old and runs great.
