Which distro should i switch to?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 08:13 AM PDT

So I've got to Linux this July obviously ubuntu 20.04 and now I've learned a lot about package managers, some good command line tools, shortcut etc.

So now I'm confused which distro to switch Either Debian or Arch

Point to mark- "I sort of play games as well (low end gamer) Usually using Lutris."

I installed i3 on my Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon machine but can't select it on login

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 01:11 AM PDT

Hi I'm running Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon and installed i3, restarted but I can't select it on the login screen. I see i3.desktop has been placed under /usr/share/xsessions correctly. When I run i3 from terminal I get " ERROR: Another window manager seems to be running (X error 10)", so that seems fine. What could be causing this?

    to install and harden firefox

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 12:50 PM PDT

How to install and harden firefox? What is fire jail? How to harden my Arch Linux? (I know it's all in wiki, but I don't know where to start)

Like what should I download to harden? Beta, nightly, or developers version?

How can I enable adblocks, degoogle, disable Properitary JS, etc, like firewalls, DNS, extensions, plug-ins?

How can I be more secure, and limit my digital footprint to almost zero while browsing, and also stay anon?

I have a weird problem with Ubuntu's Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and airplane mode settings.

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 10:29 AM PDT

When I turn off Wi-Fi using the top bar's menu, Ubuntu enables air plane mode.

And then disabling the air plane mode turns on the Bluetooth which I always keep off.

Is this normal behavior of Ubuntu 20.04?

The only way to turn off Wi-Fi without enabling airplane mode is directly from network settings.

Using a Remote Desktop Windows machine for exclusive programs?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 12:00 PM PDT

I'd love to move fully to Linux on a whim, but in my current state I use too many Windows-only programs (Like the Adobe set of programs, unfortunately) and it'd take too much effort to learn all the alternatives and change my workflow in one straight move.

I saw a video of a program that'd constantly run a Windows VM in the background, and run programs started from the Linux instance. Giving the impression of running Windows programs on Linux, but without any of the problems WINE or the like would have as they were technically running on real Windows.

It gave me an idea: I have a Gaming HTPC and combined Media Server that I have permanently running in another room. I have remote desktop software that I use to interact with it regularly, and this software has a Linux version too. Would it be a good idea to install those Windows Exclusive programs I like using onto my HTPC instead, and remote into it from the Linux desktop when I need to use them? Has anyone else tried this sort of thing already? Or is this a dumb idea that'd ultimately just waste my time, and I should continue looking at directly Linux based solutions?

ELI5: What is a btrfs subvolume?

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 11:20 AM PDT

I've been trying to understand what this is but every article I read has a bunch of words I don't know the meaning of like "posix". When I look up what these words mean I also get an explanation with words I don't understand and the rabbit hole of things I don't understand just keeps going down.

Can someone please explain to me exactly what a subvolume is and what makes it so special?

Why parrot os menu panels not showing

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 02:20 PM PDT

After adding two more panels (one by mistake) cause I wanted to edit the layout of parrot os. I wanted to delete one, and having one of those dumb moments in my life, I goggled and proceeded with what I found.

Later I found out it was for KDE plasma and not parrot os. Now all the panel menus are gone when I right click a panel.

    What I did: I did Alt+D, L

My OS: Parrot security 4.11.2 KDE

Visual studio code Linux mint 20.2

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 09:57 AM PDT

Hey yall. I have a question. I've recently started to get into Linux and I've installed visual studio code. However, when I sign in with my Microsoft account, everything goes haywire. My virtual machine crashes due to a buck load of pop-ups saying (tsserver error) appearing out of nowhere. What should I do?

    Moving back to Windows

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 12:23 PM PDT

I am moving back to windows because I need to use Davinci Resolve and the fact that getting many programs to work on Linux is so time consuming forces me to revert back but I am finding that making a windows 10 bootable USB is difficult for me. I am not used to GitHub or anything like that so woeusb is not an easy option so I am following random videos on YouTube to try and figure out how to partition/format my USB drive in order to burn the windows iso onto it. Is there not an easier way to do this?

Also, when downloading programs and software I am a little confused as to how the programs work on Linux. When I download certain applications from the web, the icons do not show up, but instead there are files with cogs and gears and it's just really hard for me to wrap my head around how to easily install apps. I know I can use the terminal and I do usually, but before I do I have to open up the web in order for me to lookup the package name lol, so in the end, I must use the web to install one way or the other. For instance if I want to install a program like Davinci Resolve or Spotify, it's not as easy as typing sudo apt get Davinci Resolve or Spotify because the methods of downloading these packages are different. I would rather not spend 30 minutes looking for the codes to run in order to download these packages.

If there is an explanation on how to easily understand package downloads and installs, then maybe in the future I may come back to Linux, but until then is there any information that would be useful for me to make a bootable win 10 USB?

How do I set up my Linux VM to act in the same network as my windows host system

    Posted: 03 Oct 2021 11:34 AM PDT

I am trying to write up a simple ip-sweeping script in my Kali Linux OS, which is running on windows 10, inside a virtual machine (VirtualBox).

When executing the script i noticed, that the ip addresses of the network my windows machine is connected to (192.168....) are not accessible inside of the VM. Instead, when running ifconfig on the Linux VM, I am connected to a completely different network (10.0....)?

What do i need to do to make my VM act as if it was in the same network as my Windows machine (make ip addresses accessible for the VM)?

Let me know if you need more details

Now if I try to uninstall it, it asks me to fix it but it doesn't know any repositories to download and fix VirtualBox from. I've tried stuff from a few forums but it didn't seem to work. Any help?
