How I compared email clients for linux and made my decision :)

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 02:51 AM PDT

So, with setting up my OS from the beginning I thought about switching from thunderbird to a more modern/better looking e-mail client. In my list I had in the end four mail clients and I tested them for my needs and did some notes- now I thought, maybe this might be interesting for some of you maybe too :)

    I compared:

Geary, Evolution, Mailspring (meanwhile the registration is no longer needed) and Thunderbird

In general this were the main points I wanted to compare:

    • How does it look? Clean, modern?
    • How much RAM does it need?
    • Is it possible to download the e-mails locally or to create an offline cache?
    • does the mail client instantly choose the receivers e-mail address as sender-address for replies if I have more than one alias?
    • does the mail client closes the application if you click on "x" and doesn't keep it still running in the background?

After some testing, this are my results:

    Geary

    • ✅ Simple, clean overview
    • ✅ (only) ~30 MB RAM
    • ✅ offline cache is possible
    • ❌ the client doesn't close completely if you click the "x" button
    • ❌ the client also doesn't choose the correct alias as sender-address for mails sent to an alias

    Evolution

picture taken by myself; appearance might vary, because I'm using ubuntu budgie with the \"whitesur\" theme/icons

    • ✅ clean overview, not too simple, but also not overloaded
    • ✅ ~78 MB RAM
    • ✅ Offline cache is a little bit hided, but is kinda working; choosing all e-mails and exporting them in as a .mbox file is possible
    • ✅ the client closes with clicking the "x" button
    • ✅ application is choosing the correct alias for replies

    Suggestions for improvement:

    • ❌ offline cache function could be more clear and easier
    • ❌ backing up the configuration +mails could be a function

    Mailspring

    • ✅ Looks extremely modern/nice
    • ✅ ~72 MB RAM
    • ❌ offline cache maybe exist? But couldn't find any settings and the local cache on the computer also didn't seem to use not even close my mail storage capacity
    • ❌ application is not closing completely if clicking on "x" button
    • ✅ client is choosing the correct alias for replies

    Suggestions for improvement:

    • ❌ the creation of a mailspring subfolder shouldn't be done by default

    Thunderbird

    • ❌ for me personally ... the design is ok. But I can not see it anymore, if there are better alternatives and ... it looks kinda overloaded and seems to include a browser, wtf? (for example adding a language directory opens in thunderbird the mozilla thunderbird add-on site ... wtf, more code and more usage only for this? wow.) All in all the design doesn't look that clean, compared with other mail clients
    • ❌ ~200 MB RAM ... ok, no comment ... (just fyi: microsofts outlook 2016 uses ~52 MB ...)
    • ✅ offline cache exists, has also be ticked for every subfolder separately; but backing up the thunderbird cache folder is easy
    • ✅ closes completely if you click the "x" button
    • ✅ thunderbird also chooses the correct alias

    Suggestions for improvement:

    • ❌ folders or especially subfolders need much time to be checked for new mails, even if I checked the setting point for every minute checking ... idk, most other mail clients notify way faster then thunderbird about new mails

    ________________________________________________________________________________________

    Summary and decision

All in all, thunderbird is the most stable mail client, it has all function I ever needed. If I could, I would use mailspring, because it looks soooo fricking modern and clean- it would fit in perfect to my ubuntu budgie OS and looks so elegant ... but not quitting the application if you click the "x" button is an absolutely no-go for me. Sad, but true. So Geary would be the perfect 2nd alternative- but noooo, it doesn't choose the correct alias ... I don't want to think every time about that if I'm replying to mails ...

So yeah. I choose evolution and I'm using it now for a few weeks and ... it is good. It is not extremely awesome, but it looks and works really good.

Hope, I could give you maybe some interesting information :))

Any distro that plays nicely with Slack and Microsoft Teams?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 01:17 PM PDT

Tried switching over to Linux again, picked Manjaro KDE this time (have a Steam Deck pre-ordered wanted to try a OS that's similar to what the Deck will ship with). Everything was going really really well this time, the only thing that forced me back to Windows was Slack and MS Teams, both work really poorly in Manjaro:

Slack randomly freezes, drawing on the screen only works me drawing on other people's (and even then, it often gets stuck)

MS Teams depends on which app I try to use, the official one mostly works but keeps my CPU at 99% during calls. Tried "teams-on-linux" client one and I get no notifications, and can only share the whole screen not specific windows.

Are these issues Manjaro-specific or are these apps just not really fully useable on Linux? Unfortunately for work I'm required to use both.

youtube-dl based downloaders not working- any alternatives?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 08:37 AM PDT

hi i have been using some youtube-dl based GUI youtube video downloaders (youtube-dl-gui, clipgrab) but they haven't been working for a while- too slow downloading speed, 70ish kbps. seen in one of the github issues probably google is restricting this speed at backend.

What are some opensource (or otherwise) GUI based downloaders for it.

    Thanks for your recommendations.

I am not asking for the command line history but if there is something record clicks and folder, links, pics, etc that have been open. If there is not, where to start to create such bash script?

    Duel Boot question

I was thinking about duel boot. If possible, could you install a Linux distro on a portable/external hard drive, make it boot and work as if it were an internal hdd?

Is it normal to need to go into terminal to fix problems when you use Linux?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 11:21 AM PDT

I got into Linux about a week ago, and many YouTube video was talking about going into terminal is not necessary unless I'm a power user.

However, when I got in, I had to use the terminal for many things such as: using alsamixer because the volume was too quiet, implementing Japanese keyboard with romaji input, setting up touchegg so I can have the most basic trackpad utility like pinch zoom, and other that I can't remember at the moment.

I'm not the most tech savvy person so the above 3 took me more than several hours to figure out how to fix. A lot of YouTube videos from Linux enthusiast seems to promote the idea that Linux is not more difficult but just different from Windows/Mac. But from my anecdotal experience, Linux just seems much more complicated for nontechnical people like me. For example, I almost never used Mac, but my girlfriend uses a MacBook and I have a much more intuitive experience with it than Linux from the little time I had with it.

I love how much I can customize the look and feel of the desktop, but I was wondering if I have to go into terminal every time some small problem that pops up in the future. I'm a little worried because if that happens that's another few hours for me to find and implement solution that I have no idea works for my setup.

I finally feeling confident enough to switch from Ubuntu to Debian, in Debian, I restored the backup of the Home folder I had in Ubuntu, but I noticed that some applications I don't have anymore, still have config files somewhere.

How can I make a good cleanup of my Home partition?

Can no longer run games on Steam

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 10:56 AM PDT

This post was originally just about Melty Blood: Type Lumina, but this is happening with every game I try now.

I'm running Arch Linux on the latest updates, and this particular game is installed on my secondary NTFS drive. I've been using Steam with this setup successfully for months. As far as I'm aware, the only changes I made since the last time the game worked were installing and configuring i3. I tried rebooting, reinstalling the game, updating my Arch installation and rebooting (it wasn't fully up to date when I first tried today, but I tried updating as a response to the issue,) updating Proton GE specifically, launching in and out of Big Picture mode, launching repeatedly, launching on 'steam-runtime' and 'steam,' and deleting the wine prefix, rebooting between each step and many more times than that. Still no luck, the game just says it's running and then stops.

I can launch the game via other versions of Proton, but in matches the screen is pure green except for the UI and the game is unplayable. Sprites don't show up in character select either.

I ran Steam from the terminal to take a look and see if there were any errors. Output from the moment I started the game is in the following pastebin: https://pastebin.com/sdYdnaMT

Detailed system info in the following pastebin: https://pastebin.com/GkE21DyP

EDIT: I moved the game to my ext4 drive and it worked to get the game working as normal. Ideally, I'd like to still store games on my secondary drive and have the library accessible from both Windows and Linux, so is there any way I can get Windows to read games off of an ext4 partition or to get my current setup launching games off of NTFS again?

Linux Mint: Is Cron/Anacron right tool for this: start program on weekdays?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 10:28 AM PDT

I've been using Mint for a few months, and recently put a few programs that I use almost daily in the startup application.

So for example Thunderbird starts up when I boot. However, I now am looking for a way to set it so Thunderbird only starts on weekdays. I thought I'd try and finally figure out cron since I read about that fairly regularly, but then I saw that that only triggers, when the PC is already on, which it isn't in my case.

I don't turn my PC on at the same time everyday, so I thought I'd set the cron job for 8am, but I gather that if I turn my PC on at 8.30 it wouldn't automatically check to see if 8am has past and would then start Thunderbird?

The "issue" I'd have with anachron is the weekdays. If I understand correctly, it would check and see if the program had triggered, and if not would start it. But if, for instance, I don't turn my PC on on Friday, would it then start on Saturday?

Thunderbird is only one example of a handful of programs I'd like to set in this way. However, as another question: I've been using KDocker to dock Thunderbird in the tray. I have KDocker running as a prefix (I think I'm using that right?) in the shortcut, so KDocker triggers when I hit the Thunderbird shortcut, and then Kdocker checks that Thunderbird really opens. However, if this doesn't happen within 30 seconds (apparently the maximum time for Kdocker), I get a popup that KDocker couldn't find it's target.

If I start Thunderbird up too early during the startup of my PC (admittedly not a great one), it takes longer than those 30 seconds. In the Startup Applications I thought I'd set it to go off after 5 minutes, but the maximum time there is 100 seconds, which isn't long enough for my PC.

I suppose if I could figure out the cron thing and have it go off later that would solve this problem.

Any pointer or advice appreciated :)

    Running Ubuntu via USB Drive

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 03:59 AM PDT

Hi all. I have a question. I want to run Ubuntu using my USB drive without installing it, does it have some limitation compare to installing to the hard disk?

The story is, I have an 2011 laptop with dying hard drive. I just want to format my other USB drive and that's it. I just knew that Ubuntu can boot via USB drive without installing it to a hard drive.

My question, can I use Ubuntu via USB drive without installing it and use it to format other USB drive?

Learning linux and cyber sec. Debian a good choice?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 09:40 AM PDT

So I'm starting my journey to learn the cyber field. Starting playing around with Kali linux. I have a old laptop, I slapped AntiX on there as the only OS and now it's very usable. I figured it's a good idea to go with a Debian distro, so hopefully I'll be more successful learning kali linux as I get more into it. Is my reasoning good? Any thoughts, opinions, or advice? Thanks!

    Brick stuff

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 09:05 AM PDT

I seen videos where they brick their computer with a simple command, does it work only on arch?

I read that linux shows folder which windows normally hide. aNd I was wandering what if you mess up if you accidentally delete some of the folder. Is it really easy to brick stuff on linux? And can you unbricked your computer easily without soldering some stuff?

How can I have Gmail notifications displayed on my XFCE desktop?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 12:13 AM PDT

So far I had Conky using a script. Since Gmail now forces you (or will soon) to enable Two factor Authentication, the script stopped working.

Just now, I tried Mail Watcher Plugin for XFCE Panel, and it didn't work either.

Currently I don't use any E-mail managers, I simply log in with my browser.

Any recommendations for something that can provide me with notifications? The simpler, the better.

    Onedriver-dolphin problem

    Posted: 31 Oct 2021 05:01 AM PDT

    Gm/ge everyone,

I recently installed onedriver from github (https://github.com/jstaf/onedriver) and whenever I am trying to upload a file dolphin freezes for some seconds. I have managed to find what the cause is but I haven't be able to find a way to fix it.

Actually, as soon as I upload a file from my home directory to Onedriver (even a small one some kbs), download speed starts to increases, reaches its maximum speed of 6.5MiB/s (that's the maximum of my home network) and at this point dolphin isn't responding at all. After about 10 seconds, download goes almost to zero and dolphin becomes usable again. Probably, onedriver redownloads all the file directories (not the files) at this point at my computer and dolphin freezes (it seems this is why it freezes). However, memory usage doesn't increase at all (usage below 50% at any point) and CPU cores aren't loaded above 15%. Has anyone else encountered this?

Another problem that I have is that WPS spreadsheet won't open some files at the directory that Onedriver is mounted but liberoffice can open them. Actually WPS spreadsheet will open them showing a blank page. However, when I copy these files at another directory of my computer e.g. Home/Documents, WPS spreadsheet can open them! Any suggestion?

I am using fedora 34 and KDE plasma - Xorg.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Researching to try linux in the future

I found an article saying linux dont have c and d drives so I research a bit and found that it is instead a partition. So does installing linux partitions itself to the drive automatically and delete windows itself? And how does its partition works.

I am afraid that if I install it in the future and save some stuff on it that it may brick the computer and stuff.
