Should I repair my laptop or buy a new one?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 02:15 PM PDT

My 5 years and 3 months old HP Pavilion 15t-bc000 laptop has broken plastic casing and a fan that needs to be replaced. The broken plastic casing is causing the hard drive to not be recognized at times, so it and the fan must be repaired. The quote I got to have everything repaired is $225 plus tax. Should I get the laptop repaired or buy a new one? Everything outside of the plastic casing and fan works well. Also, for reference I originally bought this laptop for $1100 plus tax.

    Does OS affect battery life?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 05:55 AM PDT

Just a curiosity based question. I know that macbooks hav exceptional battery life and a friend told me its because it has an optimised environment and its not just about the hardware but also the software. So was wondering if we run basic uses like youtube and browser on macOs and do the same tests on windows(using bootcamp i guess) will it be the same battery usage? I dont hav access to a macbook to test them out so can anyone help me out or someone has already done it?

    Switching laptops, need suggestions

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 11:18 AM PDT

I have the MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) which cost about $2,700 but I'm going to sell it for about $2,000 - $2,400. I'm thinking of using the. money to switch it out for a laptop that runs windows, but I don't know which laptop will give me my money's worth. I'm a Mechanical engineering major/ part time gamer so I need a pc that can run high graphics and stuff like that, what laptop would you recommend?

Need help deciding between laptops (Huawei Matebook 16, Dell XPS, LG Gram)

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 11:09 AM PDT

(Options and questions are 2 paragraphs below if you want to skip the wall of text)

Hi, I'm currently looking for a new laptop. Coming from an XMG P507 (2016), with an i7 6700HQ, 8GB ram, GTX1060 6GB, and most importantly it weight 3.7kg with the power brick and the battery life goes between 2 hours and 6 hours depending on what it's doing but still limited load. That laptop was used as a desktop replacement and served me well, 5 years later it's still going well, but I dont use it for gaming anymore as I've got a proper desktop now, and the weight + battery life make it not suitable for my current laptop needs (mobility for studying / working).

I'm looking for a new thin (<2.5cm) & light (<2.7kg total) with long enough battery life that I can either study for a full Day (minimum 8-10 hours of low-load battery life, with just Firefox running and maybe discord) or do proper work when it's plugged in (I'm an IT student, I need to be able to run an IDE like IntelliJ, possibly run a VM, compile stuff as fast as possible and possibly be able to use Linux as a dual boot, I know some laptops have driver issues). I don't need a dedicated GPU so long as the integrated one is strong enough to handle basic video decoding or can render most apps without issues, and maybe Light gaming on mostly CPU-intensive MMOs (CSGO, WoT, nothing huge). I need at least a 15.6" screen, no downgrade wanted here, and no higher than 2000€ (FR/EU but the price ratio compared to USD is usually 1:1) though obviously lower is better. And thin bezels, I know 17" laptops these days can be smaller than my current laptop, I don't want anything bigger than what I have.

I currently have 3 brands in mind and 5 laptops, and I can't really decide between them. I'll rank them from my most considered to least considered one with pros and cons below:

    1: Huawei Matebook 16

    • Pros: very powerful CPU (Ryzen 5800H), good-enough iGPU, very competitive price at 1200€, 3:2 aspect ratio which is nice for coding, big battery, SSD can be replaced.

    • Cons: a bit on the heavier side especially the power brick (480g when reading notebookcheck), not the best battery life for the battery size (again, notebookcheck says about 13h of Web browsing and 11h of video play-back, lower than the others), and ram is soldered so I'm stuck with 16GB forever.

    2: LG Gram 16 or 17

    • Pros: very light, very good battery that apparently lasts around 12-15h of Web browsing and 17-20h of video play-back, 1TB storage option and it's replaceable. Good iGPU too. Price a bit high but reasonable (~1600-1800€)

    • Cons: CPU is not very powerful, that's the cost of power-efficience I guess but half the cores of the ryzen and much lower TDP is a negative combo. Soldered ram on the 2021 models.

    3: Dell XPS 15 or 17

    • Pros: very premium, good screens, good battery for the 17" models or the i7 version of the 15", Xe iGPU for the 2021 models, light 15" models. Upgradeable ram.

    • Cons: very expensive, the slightest upgrade costs a fortune, the cheapest option that's worth considering is 1800€ for the XPS15 (i7 mandatory since the i5 has a minuscule battery) and over 1900€ for the 17 that comes with an i5, and that's with a discount. No USB A ports, no HDMI, no numpad on the 17" models. XPS17 is pretty heavy.

I can't really decide between these. My main questions are:

    • is the Gram's i7 1165G7 not underpowered for programming work ? That's really my only worry with them, if it's good enough I'd definitely pick them.

    • What about the i5 11400H for the XPS 17 ? Good enough or underpowered ?

    • is the XPS's build quality worth the very high price compared to the huawei ? I know they're regarded as the best Windows laptop but just how far ahead are they ?

    • how are the XPS's battery life with the 1080p screen option ? (Not looking at the 56Wh option for the 15) most reviews look at the 4K/OLED screens but I'm only looking at the 1080p ones.

    • how are the LG Gram's build quality and will they last me at least 5 years ?

    • are all of these compatible with Linux or do they have weird drivers for their trackpad / webcam / whatever ?

As I've said I also have a good desktop so if the laptop is just "not the best for programming" but still good enough then it's fine, that's why the 16GB ram limit doesn't worry me that much, I won't have to run thousands of containers or compile kernels in here but I'd like to not struggle to work on a medium-sized maven project with a few containers in the background.

Right now I'm headed towards the Huawei one if only because of the price/performance ratio, all the other options cost at least around 500€ more for weaker CPUs but better battery life. I'd consider that price increase if the battery improvement is very significant and the CPU performance doesn't become bad enough that it makes it hard to work. I also expect it to last me at least 5 years.

If you have feedback on those laptops or other options I haven't considered yet please do comment, this is not a small purchase so I don't want to make the wrong decision. Thanks a lot

    Best Upgrades for my Laptop?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 11:05 AM PDT

    Hey,

I'm running a Lenovo IdeaPad L340 Gaming, and I'm willing to upgrade it. As I don't really know much about PC/Laptops in general I just want to ask some questions.
Let me give you the Specs first I think about upgrading:
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 4GB ( don't know if it Notebook edition [ doesn't say it anywhere])
    CPU: Intel Core i5-9300H 2,40GHz 8 Cores
    Ram: 8GB
    SSD: 512GB

These are the main things I'm currently rocking and some of my somewhat tech-savvy friends tell me that my CPU bottlenecks the GPU, and that I could use some more RAM, and maybe a better SSD. Bc I don't want to spend too much I'm fine with no GPU upgrades as I think a 1650 can run many games on a decent Level ( i mainly play Overwatch, Naraka: Bladepoint and some Indie games, so if I'm wrong with my GPU take correct me lol)
I don't know what components would help me in this situation, like what kind of CPU should I get, what fits inside the Laptop, etc.

Also, I'm curious about Cooling, as I currently use a Coolpad, which helped FPS, let's say Overwatch go from Avg 70 -> Avg 110, but I still want to improve it.

The Reason I probably wanna stay on a Laptop is that I need 1 for University, but I also want to start streaming again, where PCs seem to be way better.

So if you can recommend me any hardware or give a reason why i maybe just go for a PC and use the Laptop for easy work and University I would love a comment ^^

My laptop isn’t connect to wifi and is updating, is there a way to cancel the update for windows, or can it even fully update? I started the update like 15-20 minutes ago and it only ever said “Restarting” and I don’t know if it’ll just do this until the battery dies.

    Slow 5900hx laptop

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 02:37 AM PDT

Hey guys Just bought my first laptop Asus zenbook with 5900hx and 16gb ram And i have a few problem

1.it is slow as hell, also on the "best performance" battery mode, It takes like 1-2 min from the moment I click on an icon (steam for example) to the moment it opens. Also rendering is super slow in some softwares. I noticed I the cpu runs at 3.3ghz while the site says 3.3 to 4.4 max boost I think. Found no way to change it.

2.the pd usb c take like 4-5 hours to fully charge my phone, with the same cable that charges my phone fully in 40 min. The laptops itself charges fast.

    1. I'm getting like 3-4 hours watching videos, 4-5 hours of coding Or 1 hour of video rendering... is it normal? Idk what to compare it to since its my first laptop.

I knew laptops are a bit more slow but, cmon, My 4790k desktop performs better...

    Thank you!

I got a new laptop that comes with the Intel Iris xe chip integrated. When I type 'dxdiag' in Run, it says that I have just 128mb of VRAM. (Continues below)

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 05:49 AM PDT

However, I have been able to run GTA5 which has a minimum requirement of 1GB of VRAM. Now while gaming, I notice that there's moderate CPU usage but the RAM is always maxed. Does this mean that because the Iris chip is integrated, it 'sources' from the normal RAM? Cuz if it does, I'll consider extending the RAM from 8GB to 16GB.

    Buying Help

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 08:16 AM PDT

    Hi there,

I'm currently torn between a few options. Context, I'm looking to make a purchase for my mother who's going to be learning the OS system. She will be using it to touch type, do admin tasks and media consumption.

My budget is around the $1k and under mark.

    I've currently deciding between Acer Swift 3 AMD Ryzen 7 5700U and 8GB LPDDR4X/512GB NVMe SSD ($1102) vs a Dell Inspiron 14 AMD Ryzen™ 7 5700U 8-core GB DDR4 3200MHz 512GB NVME SSD ($1082).

Both are similarly priced. What would you choose and why?

I don't want a Chromebook she would need to learn via Windows OS and want a useable laptop 3-4 years from now. Additionally, in terms of price for performance, I think these laptops are pre-decent.

Feel free to recommend any other similarly priced laptops :) I've had a look around and most are outdated or performance is just lacking compared to what else is available.

Should I attempt to replace thermal paste on my GPU?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 02:18 AM PDT

It's overheating. It reaches up to 90°C under load and idles at 75°C. It is GeForce 8600M. Its maximum core temperature is 100°C.

Cooling limitation: CPU heatsink and GPU heatsinks are separate, but it uses the same air channel. CPU heatsink comes before GPU's, so the hot air from CPU is blowing through GPU cooler. Also I have upgraded to hotter CPU (T7500 from T7100) yesterday. Previously the GPU would max at approximately 80°C. This CPU runs about 20°C hotter.

Operation (theory): Accessing GPU requires complete laptop disassembly while CPU can be accessed easily. I would have to completely disassemble it starting from top by removing top button panel and then removing keyboard. Then (or I could start with that) unplug antenna wires from Wi-Fi card and carefully pull them out from inside. Unplug screen and remove it. Now I could remove remaining cables from top plastics to remove it. After that I could disconnect cooling fan and other cables going from motherboard to other things on bottom casing, unscrew motherboard and finally remove it. On bottom is finally the GPU heatsink with GPU. I would remove it, clean it and apply new thermal paste. Risk: There are SMD components right around the GPU die and thermal paste I have has unknown electrical conductivity.

Then re-assemble the laptop and re-route cables the same way as they were and pray to Lord Electron.

It just sounds too hard and risky to do. Should I do it or not? The laptop is Compal FL90.

    Thanks.
