How is Linux running completely fine on HDD but windows just absolutely doesnt work. ?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 01:28 PM PDT

I have been using Linux for 3 months now, First Pop OS then Zorin and now EndeavourOS. I just love it, I used to think ssd upgrade is must but now I think I can run my device with HDD just fine If I can bear with app launches.

I want to know why is this ? is it because of ext4 ? or because windows collects so much telemetry on every click or what exactly ?

    KVM Win11 boot loop

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 11:00 AM PDT

Working on using my existing Win11 SSD as a VM using KVM and virt-manager. After setting the secure boot and TPM, I'm stuck in a boot loop which starts off "Diagnosing PC…" and then says "your pc didn't start correctly… Restart". Sometimes it will restart into a black screen with a blinking cursor and other times it will continue looping. Any help is much appreciated.

    UPDATE:

    Found a fix here: https://superuser.com/questions/1376859/windows-10-vm-bootloop

Nothing happens after i successfully install elementary os.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 01:33 PM PDT

So im switching from windows to elementary via a usb stick. So i put the stick in, select my language and keyboard layout and then press "erase disk and install". Everythingworks fine and at the end of the installation it says "elementary os odin 6 has been installed" and it asks me to restart my laptop and then set up a user.

So, i click restart and then... nothing. Its the same as when i put in the usb stick and booted it for the first time. It asks me to select language, keyboard layout and it asks me like before if i want to install it or try the demo mode.

But i already installed elementary os!!

Hopefully you can help me, thanks in advance!

    Another new project

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 01:29 PM PDT

So I recently found an old laptop that I put lakka onto. I added my rims and everything runs fine. I ran into a problem though with what I want from this project. From what research I have done I have found out that lakka does not support media streaming like YouTube and Netflix.

Sadly this will not work. I am looking to turn this laptop into a full experience that can be controlled from the initial power on with a controller.

I am reaching out to see if anyone may know of an operating system I can install on this laptop that fits this criteria

1: it can be controlled with only a controller from the moment it is turned on (not extra stuff but the OS allows this natively)

2: it can run retroarch or have a system as good as retroarch for old games

3: it can also run Netflix YouTube and kodi

I have considered using kodi for this but I can not seem to find an OS for the laptop for kodi and I don't know if kodi is able to integrate a controller like that

Any and all input would be greatly appreciated.

What should my swappiness value be if I'm running 8gb ram and 16gb swap file?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 07:12 AM PDT

I just created a swap file on PopOS, and the default swappinness value is 10. Would it be too low for my system? Should I set it to 60 as it's the default for most distros? I created a large swap file since running IDEs and a lot of browser tabs fills up the ram quickly. I will also be running a Windows VM in the near future as well. Thanks in advance!

Linux and a few good reasons to switch to it:

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 12:26 PM PDT

I have long maintained that the American public has been brainwashed by our corporate-owned, corporate-controlled media networks. I have also long-maintained that the truth is at our fingertips, the problem being that most will not take the initiative and time to seek it. So, at the suggestion of one of this site's moderators, let's try it this way:

    What happens when you Google:

    2. South Korea Windows May 19, 2019
    3. China Windows December 10, 2019

    Youtube Lag on Linux Mint

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 08:26 AM PDT

I have tried everything. I'm at my wit's end.

No matter how many fixes i try it's still the same problem.

I will pause a video go work for a bit, then clicking the video to resume, it gives me a 4 to 8 second lag before it starts.

Really infuriating because I watch tutorials, so a lot of time spent just waiting for the thing to start, even though the video is already buffered in the browser :(

"No EFI system partition was found. The system will likely not be able to boot successfully"

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 11:23 AM PDT

I currently run a dual boot of Windows 7 (disk 1) and Windows 10 (disk 2). If I previously booted Win 10, a Win 10 boot menu appears. If I previously booted Win 7, a Win 7 boot menu appears. I'm not sure if this is correct.

I'd like to add Ubuntu to Disk 1 and have a boot menu showing all 3 OSes. I have a separate partition for Ubuntu.

Ubuntu installation recognises Windows 10 is installed but no mention of Windows 7. So I chose the custom installation.

    However, I get a warning:

"No EFI system partition was found. The system will likely not be able to boot successfully, and the installation may fail"

I have absolutely no clue about UEFI. My laptop is circa 2013 so I don't think I'm running it and when I installed Windows 10 I think I had to disable UEFI in the BIOS??

Could someone please advise how I can proceed? I'm worried about installing Ubuntu and not being able to boot in to Windows 7 (my main OS).

Any MacOs style run / Windows Power Toys style run for linux?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 11:11 AM PDT

I've grown more and more used to Windows Power Toys Run because of me using rofi on linux. It's funny, because now I feel like rofi is a bit behind in file search. I added a plugin I found that just used the find command, but it's excruciatingly slow. And I could use Catfish, but that loads up like a whole another program and wants me to press enter to start searching. I know I'm nitpicking here, but I just like it more the other way. Also, I might need another plugin/script to make rofi run simple commands like reboot/shutdown etc.

Any options? I'm on XFCE with i3

How do I increase the size of my Linux partition using gparted?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 10:23 AM PDT

    MBR maximum size

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 06:48 PM PDT

I was reading about the differences between MBR and GPT partition And it said since the MBR using 32bit addressing so the size cannot be more than 2TB My questions is which size? Each partition size or the whole drive size I mean if it means each partition and since we can have 4 primary partition in MBR so there is no problem with 16TB drive in MBR right? I just want to know if it meant the whole drive cannot be more than 2TB or each partition
