Cheap lightweight laptop to run Dawn of War Dark Crusade and Black Ops 1 Zombies

    Hi,

I don't want to break the bank as they are very old games with what should be low requirements, but being lightweight is a must. I've attached the links for the Steam page of each game containing the requirements.

    Thanks

    • Hello everyone. My girlfriend needs a new laptop. Main tasks will be e-mails, web browsing and some Netflix. So she's not looking for an amazing computer, just a decent, reliable one that won't take 5 mins to start in 1 year.

I've found a few laptops that are being sold here, if you can tell me if those are good options? Sorry it's in French but I guess you can understand the specs. Or if you have suggestions for alternatives?

    Gaming Laptop MacBook equivalent

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 08:57 PM PDT

I was planning on buying a new MacBook Pro. And I still might.

But also maybe I should get a gaming laptop instead?

I have a desktop with a 980ti with an i7 6700k. I'd love something that could potentially replace this thing and get it out of my living room. That's the benchmark I'm comparing things against.

I'd like to use the machine to play AAA games on my TV, like it's a console. Ideally at 2K'ish and steady 60fps, now and for at least a few years. I'd bd playing stuff like new Guardians or Psychonauts 2, but on a tv. I don't really need the gaming to go past 60hz, though I'd probably like a screen with 144hz or whatever for day to day use. I'm largely goofing around with indie games. But when a AAA game I like comes out I want to be able to handle it like I have a console.

I'm basically looking for best gaming laptop that checks these boxes: - is a reliable machine backed by good customer service - won't feel like a jet engine if I play civ 6 on my lap - doesn't look like some Las Vegas ufo clown rave. I would need this to pass for a normal perosns laptop sometimes. - I don't care if it has a webcam

How close to this does $2000 get me? What about $3000?

    Ryzen 7 5800H(iGPU) VS Ryzen 7 5800HS(MX450)

    Posted: 30 Oct 2021 03:22 AM PDT

Hi, I have been looking at the Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 Pro, but would definitely appreciate any suggestions with regards to the model I should get. The new laptop will mainly be used for programming (CS major) in college --- IDEs (VS, RStudio etc.), multiple browsers/tabs and may try Linux in the future.

    Assuming I'd require:

    16GB RAM
    at least 512GB w/ SSD
Ryzen 7 or an Intel i7
Decent portability & build quality to and fro college

Then I'd have 2 options. They are both 2.8K OLED 400nits, with lower prices for a 2.8K, IPS, Glare 400nits.

    1. [1275USD] Ryzen 7 5800H // Integrated Radeon Graphics
    2. [1450USD] Ryzen 7 5800HS (Creator) 3.20GHz-4.4GHz 4MB // NVIDIA GeForce MX450 2GB GDDR5 64bits

Generally no preference over AMD or Intel, but it seems like Ryzen 7 is an overall performer compared to the single-core winner i7.

Is 5800H or 5800HS along with mx450 an overkill? Which would you choose? Otherwise, are there any value and performance-worthy laptops you'd prefer?

Have only used macOS all my life. Hence migrating from an i5 MacBook Pro as I need exposure to different OS, and prefer Visual Studio over Xcode for C++ due to a module in school. No monitor so the lack of thunderbolt and 60Hz for display aren't too much a concern for me currently. Hope to have the laptop last at least 5 years from now, if possible.

    Thank you!

      Reliable build quality

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Currently has a Lenovo z50-70 with. GeForce 820m. It struggles to keep about 25fps at 1080p for train sim. Honestly doesn't need super performance - just acceptable play at native res.

Mid Tier Gaming Laptop - Metal Chassis Preferred

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?Performance> Build Quality> Battery Life
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?-Not so much, reasonable weight and thinness.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?Currently looking for a metal chassis one aka not plastic and sturdy. I guess the best choice will be a razer. So in short, this post is looking for a razer blade form factor in another brand.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.I'm already leaning on purchasing an Asus G15 AE 6800 or a GP66 3080; however, I am willing to spend a bit more or go lower-spec if it means I get a better-built quality laptop. I'm not really that sold on buying a laptop right now. I might try having a feel at memory express during Christmas and see how I like the laptops there. I already have a 2070S pc and a Dell 7577 1060 max Laptop. I recently found a job wherein I found myself travelling for 2-3 weeks at a time and I'm considering purchasing a beefier laptop that I can take with me.

So the first one is 200aed more expensive for 250gb ssd. Is it worth it or can i get away with the cheaper ones as im on budget?

The second and third have the same price but the 2nd has r5 4500 and 3rd has r5 5500. I feel like both will work for my needs so which one is a 'better laptop' from these? (Build quality, upgradability, etc)

My use is only ms office, excel and autocad 2d. Ill probably not use 3d stuff. No gaming

If, besides these you see a better laptop, let me know

I'm working on a dinosaur. Looking For something to get into programming! any suggestions? (low to mid range)

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 10:55 PM PDT

    Hey guys! So...

Right now I have a truly horrible laptop. It's a laptop from before quad cores were really a thing. Obama had been president for a year or two. Different times. This beast has FOUR gigs of RAM, DUAL CORE ACTION, and a sweet HDD. Windows 7! Woo! Also it crashes randomly. It's been fun.

So now I'm looking for something in the 400-650 range. The main use is programming. Or learning to program.

I know most any laptop can do some basic Hello World stuff. Obviously. But I plan on truly committing to learning programming. I live in a tech hub, and plan on getting into the field within a year or two (I've done work similar to programming, but in a weird kind of skewed real-world way, so I feel confident in it so far).

Basically when I start compiling things, I will probably need a decent CPU. I'm honestly not sure how much RAM comes into play for it. And of course, I'd like an SSD.

I plan on making apps to practice mostly. I might make very simple games, but nothing that isn't beyond GM:S creations.

I should note that I DON'T intend to play games on the laptop. Especially not 3D games. If something comes with a decent build in graphics section, cool. But absolutely not the main thing I'm looking at. I would rather have a much better CPU and build quality. Would love a Ryzen six core, but I know it's a stretch probably.

15 or 15.6 inch is probably best. If you know of any good ideas, I'd love to hear! I'm not opposed to getting something used as I can put an SSD and RAM in myself, but that's only if it's a really good build with a good screen and exceptional CPU.

    Thanks so much!

    Something simple, under 700$

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 06:07 PM PDT

I need a laptop for studying, watching YouTube and Netflix, light gaming (Minecraft, Chess...)

I don't need anything hard-core. A nice display and smooth design would be great.

I had an HP from 2017 that I'm still using but it's not doing well at all right now. I would like a laptop that can last me atleast 2-3 years.

    Thank you in advance :)

$500 (or less) Canadian Browsing/Streaming machine

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 12:32 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Under $500 CAD for sure, but not opposed to cheaper if it meets my needs

    Are you open to refurbs/used?
A little hesitant, but not totally opposed.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
More than anything, I'd like something that will last me a few years. Before my macbook, I was averaging a new laptop every 2 years which is fiiiiine, but would like to stretch that out if at all possible.
A 2-in-1 with a good battery would be ideal. Willing to sacrifice some battery life for price though.
I won't be doing anything too demanding with it, but I want a reasonable enough performance that I won't be waiting for pages to load, programs to open etc.
I also often have many tabs open and I typically use Chrome (but open to other browsers if that would make a difference), which I think is a CPU thing...? I don't want to experience crashes from that.

How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not terribly, but would be nice. Willing to decrease screen size to increase portability.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
11-15 inches. I think 17" would be a little big for me. 11" might be a little on the small side, but would look into it.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I have a highish powered desktop for these things, so not necessary.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
A non-backlit keyboard isn't a complete deal breaker, but it would factor into the decision quite a bit.
I imagine they come pretty standard, but I would love designated keys for volume/brightness.
I really like a nice, smooth trackpad.
Haven't used an optical drive in a decade, so that's not necessary.
My current laptop is over 10 years old, so I may not know of any amazing new laptop features. Please feel free to offer suggestions!

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I will primarily be using this for streaming/browsing/shopping etc., but will also be using it as a display for piano/guitar music, so a 2-in-1 would be great (not required).
I have been using a 13 inch Macbook from 2011 since... 2011. It is now far beyond the point any reasonable person would continue using it, but I am far from reasonable, and I'm holding on to it for as long as I possibly can!

Need help finding a portable gaming rig under $3500

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 10:38 AM PDT

I'll preface this by saying a normal laptop probably wont be the best device for my situation but I'm still open to it. I'm probably more looking for a portable All-in-1 or a gaming-oriented 2-in-1with an eGPU (if that's even an option). Ideally, I'd get an ROG Mothership but the value isn't quite there. https://rog.asus.com/us/laptops/rog-series/rog-mothership-gz700-series/

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      3500USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Form factor and performance are most important (need to be able to fit it all in a backpack yet also be able to play AAA games), build quality next, and battery life is not a factor.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Relatively small
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Will almost exclusively be used for gaming (ranging from small indie games to AAA titles)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Needs to be able to run AAA titles on high settings
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
It's important that the keyboard is either detachable or can fold back because I hate using attached keyboards. I'd also be open to some sorta of tablet computer that doesn't even have a keyboard; then I could just bring my own around with it. A webcam would be great too.

I'm a novice and that's why I'm here asking the pros. I'll be using this laptop for video editing and remote work. I teach zoom classes often and use Microsoft office regularly. I generally use my laptop at home and don't take it out much. I really value, storage, quick processing and reliability in a laptop. I'm planning on keeping this laptop for a long time.

Laptop for streaming work desktop to

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 04:26 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Trying to keep it under $300-500 USD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

I'm not entirely opposed, consider I would likely just sell it afterwards

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I would prefer to have performance first, then I guess build quality and battery life. I'm not expecting to use it unplugged

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Decently important but not critical

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    At least 14"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I don't plan on using it for literally anything other than connecting to VM Blast to stream my work desktop's screen to this laptop and work off of. Basically AFAIK all I need is a good network card. It's impossible to google for this because everything just assumes I'm trying to stream my screen to twitch. I just want to stream my other computer to this hypothetical laptop.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Won't need to game at all, just stream and interact with that virtual desktop.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

decent keyboard and a way for me to connect a second monitor

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Appreciate any advice, I guess I was either looking at an Aspire 5 or a mini desktop pc if I can find one cheap enough. Literally just want something I can stream video to that won't shit the bed network wise. I need to be able to interact with my work pc which means it receiving and sending data competently. Otherwise want to keep it as cheap as possible because I only plan on using it for a month. Thanks!

Hi! Need a laptop under 600€

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 04:16 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
    600€ max

    Are you open to refurbs/used?
    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance is by far most important, followed by good battery life. I tend to break my laptop after 2 years of use tho so I guess build quality is important too

How important is weight and thinness to you?
    Not important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
    15-16 inches

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
    No

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I won't use it for gaming

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I tend to break my laptops where the screen is attached to the rest of it and they end up dislocated in two parts (that's because I'm lazy and sometimes I picked them up from the screen - I'm an animal, I know). So a laptop that is thicker there would help.
Also, I don't love Amazon but I have some credit there from a gift, so on this occasion, I'd consider buying it there if there's some good deal.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've had Lenovo, HP, Dell and Acer and I'm open to any suggestion because I really don't know much about laptops.

    Thank you a lot!

    For College Engineering Student

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 02:09 PM PDT

I am going into engineering as my major and have no idea what I may need. I was suggested going red with AMD for the multi tasking abilities. Also I'd like the ray tracing that Nvidia cards offer.

    • Total budget (In local currency) and country of purchase:

    ~3500

    • Are you open to refurbs/used? -fill here, remove dashes-

    No

    • How would you prioritize form factor, build quality, performance, and battery life?

In order of importance: Build quality Performance Battery Form factor

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

16+ my eyesight is terrible and it would be nice to see what I'm modeling

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I'll hopefully be doing everything on this list. Solid Works Photoshop Adobe platforms Etc.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Not a priority in comparison to school work, but I'd like to play EA titles at 140 fps consistently

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

IPS panel 1440p Decently color accurate HDMI Ethernet Having a nice keyboard/trackpad would be nice but not a priority

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'd prefer it to be low profile but when asking for higher specs I know it's hard to find something not flashy which is why I have come for assistance

    Need a laptop for gaming

    Posted: 29 Oct 2021 02:09 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
800€ max, living in Germany (preferably something around 600€)

    Are you open to refurbs/used?
A little hesitant, but not totally opposed.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
    Performance is by far most important;
    Build quality isn't really important, but it would be nice, if the Laptop doesn't break immediately;
    I don't care about good battery life at all;
I don't want a laptop that has any special form factor skills, I would prefer a standard one.

How important is weight and thinness to you?
    Not important at all

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15 inches + (the bigger the better)

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
mostly gaming and discord in the background

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
    I would love to smoothly run aoe4 on medium settings and be able to stream it via Discord with ok FPS;
    The Batman Arkham games on medium/low settings;
(so probably 12-16 GB RAM, you might tell me if my expectations are unrealistic)
(basically mediocre games with medium settings)

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
    I'm fine with attached keyboards; I don't want a touchpad or anything special; Preferably with Win10;
keyboard should be German ( QWERTZ )
I have my own mouse and headset, but a camera would be nice (no need for high quality though)

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Feel free to write several suggestions.
Should I wait for Black Friday or something, or is it now the optimal time to buy a laptop?
I would love to pick up a nice deal.

    Thank you all in advance!
