Random drop in gaming performance (Razer Blade 15 2018 Base) Posted: 29 Sep 2021 11:29 PM PDT Decided to play a few games after a long school day on my laptop and was met with HORRIBLE performance. Usually run games fine on this laptop. i7, 16gb RAM, GTX 1060 maxq. All of a sudden I can get over 5 frames in doom eternal. 100% GPU usage when fired up. Any fix to this? Why is this all of a sudden happening? Any help is appreciated! submitted by /u/CarbonMercinary [link] [comments] |
I would like some suggestions for a nice but "entry level" gaming laptop Posted: 29 Sep 2021 05:17 PM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$800 USD, maybe $850 at most (Connecticut, USA) - Are you open to refurbs/used?
I prefer new, but if it is a really good deal then perhaps yes - How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Build quality - performance - traditional laptop (not 2-in-1) - battery life - How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not important, but I'm not interested in laptops as thick as my arm. - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15-17 inches IPS - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Gaming only. Maybe some 3D work if I get back into that again - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I mostly play World of Tanks, Destiny 2, and Witcher 3. Occasionally dip into some CoD games, but not too often. - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I would like a nice keyboard and nice display, but that's about it for the laptop's build quality. Plastic is fine as long as it's not super flimsy. I would like to maximize the USB-A port count if possible - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
RGB lighting is not important. Cooling/noise however, IS important. Quiet under load has priority over temperatures. submitted by /u/LosTaquitos [link] [comments] |
College student looking for laptop recommendations Posted: 30 Sep 2021 04:47 AM PDT College student in Ireland, currently on the look out for a high performance budget laptop and partaking in a mathematics degree. I know a bit about computers, but I'm not too sure on the current laptop market, so I need some help with finding a suitable device. Would prefer one with at least 16gb of ram, as well as 512gb of storage. Unsure about the CPU, but from looking at benchmarks, as well as what other people say, it seem that ryzen is currently the preferable choice. Here are some devices I found recently, would be good to get your feedback on them, or get some suggestions for possible alternatives. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08CKXSM6J/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&th=1 https://www.currys.ie/ieen/computing/laptops/laptops/huawei-matebook-2020-13-laptop-intel-core-i5-512-gb-ssd-grey-10207885-pdt.html?istCompanyId=fbc6ef6d-ab18-45e3-927a-0cb677794424&istFeedId=0959f117-9faa-4499-80bd-c0265bb2950e&istItemId=illwmaapi&istBid=t https://www.stockmustgo.co.uk/collections/all-laptops/products/hp-pavilion-15-eh0515sa-15-6-laptop-amd-ryzen-7-512-gb-silver-287j4ea-abu - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
€500-€800; Ireland - Are you open to refurbs/used?
Refurbs I guess - How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life isn't that important, since I plan probably have it plugged in most of the time. I am indifferent to form-factor, as long as it works as a computer. I think I would prefer a metal, or at least partly metal build since a plastic build may flex and overall feel cheap. Out of all of these, I'd say I would prioritise performance the most - How important is weight and thinness to you?
Doesn't really matter - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15 Inches - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I'll probably be doing some light gaming - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Don't own much new AAA titles, most likely will be playing some older and/or less demanding games. Perhaps FPS games like CS:GO, Cities:Skylines, as well as some Paradox grand-strategy games. - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
A good keyboard would definitely be a priority, since there are some programming elements in the modules that I am/will be taking in college and I wish to have a comfortable typing experience. Build quality is important, I don't enjoy th feeling of the entire laptop flexing as I type on the keyboard. - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Hope to be using this laptop for at least the next 4 years. I am willing to purchase from UK as well as other EU websites, but preferably if they contain a qwerty keyboard. At least 16gb of ram, but will take 8 if it's a good deal. at least 512gb of storage. submitted by /u/Basejumperio [link] [comments] |

Looking for an ultrabook similar to the Dell XPS 13 - but with a better battery Posted: 29 Sep 2021 03:26 PM PDT Hello, I've been searching for an ultrabook for a while now and I really like the look for the Dell XPS 13 - I like the size, memory and storage, and the build quality, keyboard and touchpad are all spoken highly of in reviews. However, I have read extensively that the battery on the XPS 13 is poor for the price, and that it degrades after a few months. This is a total deal breaker to me as battery life is one of the most important aspects of the laptop to me. Are you aware of a laptop similar to the XPS but that has a better battery life? I don't have a specific Watt hour figure or number of hours I'd like to run for, but in general I would like the battery to be much better than that of the XPS. Q: Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: £1,500 (GBP) Are you open to refurbs/used? No Q: How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Ultrabook, Battery life, build quality, performance Q: How important is weight and thinness to you? I'm not too concerned with weight, I care much more about thinness Q: Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. This is important - it must be 13" (not specifically 13", 13.3" for instance is OK) Q: Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. No, I'm using this mainly programming with only light gaming/video editing - integrated graphics suffice, performance is not super important to me Q: Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I do not want a touch-screen, I'm not overly picky about keyboard/touchpad but I would like them to be good given the price I'm paying, same thing with screen. Q: Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm looking for 16GB of memory and a 512GB SSD or larger. I should also note that I plan to install Linux but I've done that a good few times so I at least somewhat know my way around the process Thanks very much for any input. submitted by /u/PM_ME_UNIXRICE [link] [comments] |

Dreading an Upgrade... searching for $1100-$1500 Laptops in Canada? Posted: 29 Sep 2021 07:50 PM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1100-$1500 CAD - Are you open to refurbs/used?
No - How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Looking for good build quality and performance above all else, then battery life, and form factor doesn't much matter - How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not super important, will not move around too much with it. - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
17" preferred, 15" if it can provide way better bang for the buck - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No video editing, minor/occasional photo editing. I'm a casual user of Blender and Unity, and will be writing and building software, but #1 use will be browser for netflix and youtube. - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Casual gaming, so I don't need ultra graphics setting or super high FPS (happy with 60FPS). Will be playing Diablo4 when released, and would like to try No Man's Sky in VR. - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Numpad! not a requirement, but definitely a plus - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm finding it really hard to not go over budget! I'm too tempted by those GPU and CPU upgrades that I might not even need, and at the same time everything feels overpriced... so I'm hoping to get unbiased advice/suggestions. My current laptop is from 2014, ~$1200 Asus ROG G771JM (i7-4710HQ, GTX 860M, 12GB RAM). Best I've ever owned and still runs ok, but its really starting to show its age in the GPU department. About 2 in 1 laptops (Asus rog flox x13) Posted: 29 Sep 2021 07:41 AM PDT I'm looking for a 2 in 1 laptop that also has dedicated graphics. I currently have my eyes set on the asus rog flow x13 (without the eGpu), as it seems to have great value for the form factor and performance, but none of the reviews I watched seem to mention the writing experience (when using a pen). Can any of you describe their experience with this laptop? And if it isn't any good, do you have any suggestion? Here's the form for reference. Bonus points if you have stylus recommendations too as Best buy doesn't include it (at least they don't in Canada) - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Canada, about $2000 (same price as flow x13) - Are you open to refurbs/used?
No - How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
2 in 1 and dedicated graphics are a must. Battery life would be nice, but I can't expect much from a performant laptop. - How important is weight and thinness to you?
As long as it doesn't surpass 4 pounds, I'm good with whatever. - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Not over 15 inches if possible - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Unity, blender for productivity. I'm also into gaming, but I don't tend to play demanding games. I also want this laptop to last for at least 4-5 years, so the more power, the better. - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Either simple indie games, or rocket league. I want at least 60fps, medium setting if possible. - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Not really. As long as it is good for writing notes digitally, I'm good. I suppose I would also appreciate having a good keyboard, and perhaps 120hz display like on the flow x13. - Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
All I really want to know is if the flow x13 is adequate for taking digital notes. I do believe it is a good choice, though it may be slightly overkill. submitted by /u/thedoctoristhedoctor [link] [comments] |
College student on the hunt for a new laptop. Budget US $600-1100ish Posted: 29 Sep 2021 11:20 AM PDT Hello everyone, I'm on a search for a new laptop. The last time I bought a laptop was 6 years ago. I have little knowledge about computer stuff, the one I currently have was randomly picked out. Anyways, I'm a college student looking for a laptop on a $600- 1100-ish budget. A laptop that is suitable for my schoolwork and light gaming. Other stuff I want to do with the new laptop is digital drawing and some programming. - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$600 -1100ish USD - Are you open to refurbs/used?
No - How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance, a good battery life would be nice. - How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not that important - Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
14"-17" - Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Some light/medium gaming. I'm also looking to get into photo editing/ digital drawing - If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Minecraft, little nightmares, warframe, don't starve together, Forest. I have no clue what FPS is. I want to be able play most games without lagging. Not that I'll have much time for it anyways. - Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
No touchscreen, good input devices, good keyboard. Something that won't suddenly fall apart or overheat. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I'm in this for the long haul so I'll be using the new laptop for the next 5-6 years. submitted by /u/pizza_maniac1 [link] [comments] |
Any better laptop for the price? Posted: 29 Sep 2021 04:32 PM PDT |
Durable laptop with nice screen for video editing Posted: 29 Sep 2021 08:01 PM PDT - Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase.
- Budget: Trying to keep it under $2000.00 if possible
- Country of purchase: United States
- Are you open to refurbs/used?
- No. I want a new laptop with a full warranty.
- How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
- Not against a 2-in1, but it's not important. This will be a laptop for video editing.
- Build quality: My niece is hard on laptops. It needs to be durable.
- Good battery life is a plus, but I would trade it off for better performance or a better screen.
- How important is weight and thinness to you?
- Not super important. It would be nice if it wasn't a tank, but I don't think the laptop will move a lot.
Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. - This laptop will be for video editing. She's running Final Cut Pro now and is thinking of switching to Adobe Premiere.
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? - Durability is important
- A non-sucky keyboard is a plus.
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. - I have bought 2 laptops with this forum's help over the years. I appreciate it. This is a nice little corner of the internet. 🙂
