Hey everyone looking for advice on a laptop for my mum(700/800€ budget)

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 04:49 AM PDT

So she has a budget of around 700/800€ and is looking to get small personal laptop of her own, she really doesn't use the laptop for much to start with mostly just YouTube, Facebook, word documents, printing stuff and the odd movie stream. Does anyone have any good suggestions? Located in Europe so can order off most websites here but if there's a better deal elsewhere I'd go for it ❤️ hoping yall can help me out with a few options , and mums got no clue about these things so I want to get her somthing with decent speed and a decent battery if possible. Cheers again

Laptop "charging" but jot going up

My Lenovo thinkpad laptop said it was charging (before it ran out) but no percentage was going up. I know basicly nothing about computers and am very stressed on what to do, so if anyone could help that'd be great.

I'm young and I made a mistake by NOT buying a laptop. Please help.

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 09:48 AM PDT

I bought the Artist 15.6 Pro drawing tablet thinking that since it was a better deal than most I'd be fine, but it turns out that it isn't a standalone and needs a laptop to work.

It broke my heart to see that, and I know I should have researched it more, but it really seemed like it was it's own thing. I now need to find a cheaper but decent laptop to pair with it and I have no idea where to start. I've tried googling it but all I get is top ten laptops/ads. Can anyone offer me any suggestions or a direction to go? It's needs an HDMI port and good storage or something like that and thats all I really know.

I don't want to admit to my parents that I made a mistake like this but I'm about to so any help is much appreciated.

Usb stick to make laptop faster?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 01:28 PM PDT

I'm thinking of upgrading to a new laptop, as I have an old acer that can't even handle running terraria and am now in an IT course that uses demanding software that my laptop can't run

My dad heard about me upgrading and has been telling me to look at some USB he saw on an advert that makes laptops faster. He can't remember the name, but if you guys have any idea what it could be or whether they actually work and could fill me in, it'd be appreciated.

ASUS VivoBook 15 M513UA-BQ005T or HP Pavilion 15-eh1005nl?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 01:20 PM PDT

I have to choose between these two laptops, which I'll mainly use for the university (a bit of coding and autocad):
Asus: AMD Ryzen 7 5700U, 8 GB RAM, SSD 512 GB, Price €619
HP: AMD Ryzen 5 5500U, 8 GB RAM, SSD 256 GB, Price €495
The other specs are the same, is the price difference worth the ryzen 7 and the wider SSd?
For the HP laptop there are also the versions with: SSD 512 GB, €575 or with Ryzen 7 5700U, 16 GB RAM, SSD 512 GB, €683

Need help buying a soli gaming/animating laptop.

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 01:09 PM PDT

Hey, hi, how's it going? I literally made a Reddit account to ask for help with buying a laptop.

Here's some context and details: Firstly, I know zilch about computers or about hardware/software/GPUs/building/etc, also my apartment is rather small and I can't afford a proper PC setup in both terms of money and space.

Second, I'm rather mobile and have the ability to take this theoretical laptop to work for use during breaks. I already have a Chromebook which I use for writing but being a Chromebook it's obviously not very powerful, unable to use Steam as anything more than the website and I doubt there's any proper animation/video making software that I can effectivley run (without it being treated as a mobile app anywho).

Third, when I say 'gaming' I'm talking older, indie and/or double AA games that I can't get on either 8th gen console (yup, console peasent here) and have been missing out on. I'm talking games less like GTA, Cyberpunk, or Crysis Remastered (is that still a relevant joke?) and games more like Factorio, Bloons 6 and Iron Harvest. I'm also not looking for extensivley online/multiplayer capabilites.

Forth, in terms of animation I want to animate in Blender, particularly in animating fictional weapons from my novel for personal reasons akin to Hyper or Sully (obviously with far less experience and finess though).

My budget is about $800 NZD which is roughly $550 USD for reference and I would prefer to buy as new as opposed to preowned.

Also if you have any games to recommend for me that'd be much appreciated!

If you got this far, thanks for taking the time to read and have a good one!

    Looking for a Student Laptop

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 09:17 AM PDT

I'm looking for a laptop with the following specs:

    --14 or 15 inch display

    --Backlit keyboard

--Long lasting battery that charges fast

    --Ultra thin that is light

--Processor that's fast enough (ik this is vague, sorry)

Realistically, I probably won't find a laptop under $1000 dollars with all these specs. However, if any of you have recommendations please send them over! Thanks!

How do people keep their laptops alive for 3+ years? Advice on caring for laptops

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 12:48 PM PDT

    Hi guys,

Everyone in my family has had their laptop last at least 4 years, meanwhile my first laptop- a yoga 730 13", has had a hiccup or two in its first year, and is failing on me right after its 3rd year. In its 2nd year, online school got especially hard when it got too slow/laggy to do much if I have a video/Zoom meeting going on at the same time. Some months ago one of its hinges broke off and flew across the room when I adjusted its screen (during an exam...). It's had a blue screen of death every now and then. Now its battery drains from 80 to 15% in about an hour and a half. I've always been so careful with my laptop- ive never once dropped it not spilled food on it, and I always put a sort of foamy laptop coaster under it before i put i down anywhere. But, still.

I've been surfing for a new laptop these past few days because I'm going to college pretty soon, and I wouldn't want my laptop dying on me on my first year. When I get a new laptop, I want to make sure it lasts my 4 years (or longer). College on its own is expensive enough. Any laptop-care advice / maintenance advice?

I know not to charge your laptop til its full, and to keep it between 20% - 50%, and occasionally drain it from a 100%, not to just leave it on sleep mode, and some common sense stuff (no heavy stuff on it, leave it in direct sunlight, etc). With how careful I've been, I have no idea why it isn't lasting longer apart from using it too much/having many tabs open. Do y'all have any further advice for taking care of laptops? Any specific don'ts that I should know about?

Sorry if this isn't how I was supposed to post on this reddit or if the formatting is wrong!

Questions for people who have tried 17 inch 16:10 laptops and also smaller 3:2 laptops

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 12:26 PM PDT

    1. Will there ever be a 3:2 seventeen inch laptop?
    2. Would it be worth it? Or have so much physical vertical real estate in 17 inch laptop already that it doesn't matter?

HP 15 (2021) vs HP Pavilion Gaming 15

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 08:20 AM PDT

I am in the market for a laptop and came across these two. The pavilion gaming comes with Ryzen 4600H and GTX 1650. The HP 15 comes with Ryzen 5500U and Vega graphics. But in terms of price, the pavilion is more expensive by just $50 while boasting a high performance CPU and discrete GPU. Why would anyone buy the HP 15 then? What am I missing here?

    Just a small upgrade question.

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 08:05 AM PDT

Hello everyone! I'm thinking of upgrading my Dell Vostro 15 3658 to 8gb ram and a SSD. I've watched many videos about HDD to SSD upgrades and it is true that there is a big performance step up. But since my laptop is i3 7th gen, will there still be a noticeable performance upgrade? Will 100% upgrade the ram. I'm just really worried since it's an old CPU. Also, really sorry for the bad composition and English. It is not my native language.

-mainly will use Excel, Power Point. Googling/multiple tabs. Other reasons as well.

All the wrong steps after coffee spill

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 11:19 AM PDT

I spilled coffee on my Asus laptop while on a zoom meeting, didn't do any of the recommended steps (don't judge), like turning it off immediately. After the meeting I let it dry for 2 days, but now some of the letters on my keyboard don't work (some dont work at all, the space button writes "0" when I click it etc.). The problem is, tomorrow is Sunday and none of the repair shops work tomorrow, so I can't find out if the damage is repairable or should I buy a new one asap. It is urgent, since I have other meetings and things to do on monday already! :( What are the odds that the laptop will be possible to repair? All help is appreciated!

Need a work laptop for under $800 [US] that can handle 2D modeling and maybe some 3D too. (Think autoCAD, solidworks)

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 11:02 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $800 US

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    NO

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

*Performance is all I care about. Open to any brand or style *

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important at all

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Not a deal breaker, but something midsized, maybe 15"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I use Microstation CAD (2D designing) for work but I may get a new job so I want something that could handle 3D modeling if that happens

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I dont game much anymore but if I did, I would like to play the elder scrolls/fallout games and borderlands

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Not worried about these things

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    Thanks!
