AMD or Intel for a gaming laptop?

    Posted: 19 Sep 2021 11:35 AM PDT

If the price range is the same, which is better for a gaming laptop with an NVIDIA 1650?

Basically, my choice is between AMD Ryzen 5 5600H and Intel Core i5 11300H.

    Asus e510

    Posted: 19 Sep 2021 03:15 PM PDT

I don't really know much about computers, I just bought an Asus e510, as a starting laptop to help me record music and send it to my producer. Unfortunately I don't know how to use the headphone jack if you can even call it that, let me know how I can fix this issue and I would be grateful thank you.

Dell Inspiron 16 Plus: Best linux productivity laptop I've ever had (working in academia)

    Which one should I buy

    Posted: 19 Sep 2021 08:46 AM PDT

I am a computer science student and I wanna buy a laptop for programming desktop applications, web development, some beginner level machine learning projects, some game programming using java swing or java fx and simple video editing (not vfx). I am currently little low on budget and I'm given few choices to select from. Which one is the best?

    1) Dell 3511 series - i3 11 gen, 8 GB DDR4, 1TB HDD, 15.6" -> -636.41 $.

    2) Dell Inspiron 3511- i5 11 gen, 8GB RAM, 1 TB+256 SSD, 15.6"-> 948.50 $.

    3) Acer aspire - R5-3500U, 8GB RAM, 512 SSD, 16.6" -> 636.41 $.

    4) Acer (i forgot the model, I think it was Extensa) - i3-1115G4, 4GB RAM, 1 TB HDD, 15.6" -> 527 $.

Which one is a better deal? Maybe you can suggest me one.

    Ultrabook 15" recomendation productivity

    Posted: 19 Sep 2021 02:29 PM PDT

    • Total budget and country of purchase.
      1200€
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Nope
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Everything, but ultrabook is the key
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Around 1.5kg - 1.8kg
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15.6" ... IPS
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I want my laptop to be able for video editing and light gaming (but gaming is not priority cause i already have a desktop so..). The use would be mainly programming.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      Not mainly into gaming.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good keyboard pls, for me is esential. Touch screen would be really nice too...
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I was already between thinkpad T15 or L15, but I think is to expensive.... I saw that the E15 AMD version was already released and selling but... I don't know if there will be an AMD version for those previous models.

Deciding between keeping my current laptop or getting a new one, need some help

    Posted: 19 Sep 2021 02:27 PM PDT

Reposting this question to try and get some more opinions

I just got the Samsung Galaxy book Flex2 Alpha and so far I love it. It is light, portable, has a great display and keyboard, and has average audio. It does everything that I need it to do. My only worry is that the display is on the smaller side at 13.3 inches.

To address this concern I have 2 options:

    1. Return the Samsung Galaxy book Flex2 Alpha and get a larger laptop (new laptop would be the HP Envy x360 15t-es000PC touch with the 400 Nits display upgrade); ~$1050 USD (tax/shipping included)
    2. Keep the Samsung Galaxy book Flex2 Alpha and get a larger external monitor (15.6 or 17.3 inches. The downside is that neither of the external monitors that I am looking at have touchscreens); ~$1130 USD (15.6 inch external monitor, tax/shipping included) - ~$1325 USD (17.3 inch external monitor, tax/shipping included)

Which option should I go for?

I only have a few days to return the laptop if I go for option 1.

    Thanks for all the help!

Macbook air worth it for a college student?

    Posted: 19 Sep 2021 07:51 AM PDT

I need a new laptop for college because the cheap one I have right now is too slow. I use my laptop almost exclusively for schoolwork: •Zoom •Research •Typing/ writing essays I could get the macbook air right now with the college discount for $800 and a free pair of airpods which i don't need but whatever. Is this a good option for speed, running multiple applications, and video calls? Or is there something near as good for less $

Opinions on lenovo legion slim 7?

Thinking about using it for school and games. Looks like it might be easier to take around as it looks more portable. I don't know about the price though? Also would it be possible to upgrade the ssd on this thing?

    Good all-around student laptop

    Posted: 19 Sep 2021 01:28 PM PDT

I'm currently a college student preparing for future grad school and long term usability for my next laptop 2 in 1. I have been a long term HP computer person through my dad before I had a Dell Inspiron and oh boy, that was a serious mess. One serious problem that is making me upgrade is the battery life. It is atrocious on my Inspiron 15 2 in 1 with a few other issues (dell bug that killed printer access for a year, and keyboard issues).

Right now, I'm eyeing a new laptop as a result.

I do a fair amount of typing as I do some writing in my spare time with multiple short stories. And I also have a camera so I am constantly using SD cards to go through and sort out photos on my laptop.

In my circumstance, which of the two laptops would be best suited for me?

Two laptops that I'm eyeing are the Envy and Spectre as my potential go to's but I'm open to other suggestions and advice.

    Suggestions for Older, Upgradeable Laptop

    Posted: 19 Sep 2021 01:23 PM PDT

First and foremost, I know I'm not going to get the absolute best of anything by upgrading an older laptop, but I figured something with a 4th gen i7 and an MXM slot should be able to play modern games even at low or medium settings.

So far I've been looking at the likes of the Dell Precision lineup, more specifically either the M6700, the M4800, or the M6800. They all have upgradeable components and the 17" models can accept larger MXM cards as well as have a 2nd drive bay for additional storage on-the-go. The M6700 has a better screen than the M6800, but the M6800 has a 4th gen i7 over a 3rd gen. The M4800 has a better screen than either, but loses out on the ability to accept larger MXM cards, and that 2nd drive bay.

Are there any similar vintage of laptops that I should be considering over these if my only real plan is to upgrade it? As I understand it, the majority of more-modern laptops are fairly anti-upgrade, unless you get from whitebook suppliers like Clevo, and I don't really want to pay their prices.

    WFD_Violation

    Posted: 19 Sep 2021 12:47 PM PDT

Hi everyone, so earlier today, I tried updating my Hp laptop, but once the laptop had finished updating, it suddenly crashed on me saying that my drivers are damaged and it needed to reset, now everytime I try to turn the laptop on, I get a notice saying that the device ran into a problem with a Wfd_violation and needs to reset. I've been trying to troubleshoot or perform a start up repair, but whenever I do, it asks me for the user password. For the last two years I have used the laptop, I have not needed to use a password to log myself in so I have no idea what i am meant to do in this situation. Is it possible to have the drivers replaced or is there some way I can retrieve my administrator password through some other means.

Thank you all for the help in advance

    Lenovo Legion 5 Pro

    Posted: 19 Sep 2021 12:40 PM PDT

Hey guys! So I decided I'd like to buy a Legion 5 Pro 3060 or maybe the RX6600 model if that pops up soon. However, there's one thing that's giving me some troubles regarding a comparison with the normal Legion 5: the screen.

Excuse my lack of knowledge on this subject, but here's my question: if the Pro has a better screen resolution (2560:1600) vs the normal 5 (1920:1080), doesn't that mean that the GPU in the Pro will have to "work harder", thus offering a lower FPS count?

Thank you, I'm grateful for any info regarding this issue and also for further suggestions/advice about buying a budget gaming laptop.

Been offered the linked laptop for £100, wondering if its worth that much because I don't think it is personally. Would put another 4gb ram in and get a decent ssd. Would that at least make it bearable for using daws and chrome?

    Mysterious Power Drain: Hardware issue?

    Posted: 19 Sep 2021 12:22 PM PDT

I'm having some weird issues with my 2019 Gigabyte Aero 15 OLED. Recently I've noticed that the battery life that has been decent before has gotten incredibly bad (I usually got 6-7 hours of normal usage, now I can't even get 2.).

I've spent a whole day diagonising, (re-)installing and trying to fix the issue - to no avail. Fresh Windows Install, BIOS Update - no change.

    1. The system reports a very high power draw - I used hwinfo64 and BatteryBar to get the data. Before the issue the Notebook drew about ~20mW on average. Not it's more like 40.
    2. The really weird thing is: All the power hungry components seem to work properly. The CPU stays well below 10 Watts in idle, the dGPU is propery deactivated by optimus.
    3. No matter what tool I use, I cannot find the component causing the power draw. Something I noticed though: The screen brightness seems to have very little effect on the usage. Min brightness and max brightness doesn't even make 10mW difference - IIRC, it was more before. But maybe I'm seeing ghosts.

So after doing a fresh clean install of Windows and even reflashing the Bios I suspect that it might be a hardware issue. Does anyone have an idea what to do? I know my way around a laptop, but I have no clue what could be causing this.

    Any help is appreciated...

Hi everyone, why is this always happening when the laptop is in idle? I already tried reformatting but it's still the same. I guess the possible cause is defective hdd. Is there any other cause?
