Will Linux touch other drives while installing? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 04:37 AM PDT Hi, I know it's a dumb question but I just want to double-check. If I install Pop_oS to one drive, will it touch any of the other drives? I have a backup HDD installed as well as another drive for games, and I would just like to make sure it won't touch those drives. Thanks. [link] [comments]
How do I completely and securely wipe out my SSD using Linux? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 02:06 PM PDT I have a Xubuntu and Win10 dualboot. Windows 10 stopped working sometime back and even Linux has been giving some problems. I wanted to securely and completely wipe out my ssd and then install Xubuntu again (no dual boot). How do I go about wiping all partitions and the whole SSD and then format it for installing Linux again? I already backed up all data. [link] [comments]
Can I use a Nintendo switch controller on Linux ? And how to download emulators ? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 12:20 PM PDT Hello Reddit. I just downloaded Linux ubuntu (pop os) last night. I followed ltts video. I wanted to know if I could connect my Nintendo switch wireless controller to my Linux pc. Also I want to run emulators. Especially the ps games like the old god of war. And would like to try new ones like Nintendo and stuff. I have never tried emulations before and I would like to know some recommended good ones. Also how to do it. Game recommendations are also accepted. [link] [comments]
What are some "must have" vim plug-ins? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 12:20 PM PDT I'm trying to get started with Vim since everyone speaks so highly of it. I already know enough about it to 'get by' thanks to DistroTube's videos, but I'm still a noob so I don't have any plugins yet. What are some of your favorites? [link] [comments]
Is there a way to know if a restart is needed after updating? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 10:11 AM PDT Distro: Ubuntu 20.04 I know that a kernel update or an NVIDIA driver update requires a restart to take effect. I don't get any notification, but I usually just restart anyway. Is there a command to run that tells you that a system restart is required after running [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Sep 2021 09:59 AM PDT I've hosted numerous things on my server using Ubuntu Server, which does not come with a GUI. Recently i've been having to need to connect to the server more and more often to edit configs e.t.c. I'm not asking whether GUIs are faster / easier to use, or anything like that. All i want to know, is if having a GUI makes that much of a performance difference, and which distro comes with one of the least taxing GUI's. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Sep 2021 12:04 PM PDT Which one should I get? What is their difference? There are more of these duplicate apps. For example there are two Inkscape apps. Why is that? [link] [comments]
Migrating to Linux, need help in setting up partition Posted: 19 Sep 2021 06:51 AM PDT Hello all, current Windows 10 user wanting to migrate to Linux(Kubuntu/Pop-OS). Need help in deciding the optimal partition setup for my current storage setup which is as below: Storage:
I thought of 2 ways, which are as below
In both the cases, will have HDD continue as a backup after a format to ext4 as the current format is NTFS. I don't plan on having a Swap partition as I have 16GB RAM. If I were to go with first setup, will the entirety of 120GB be used or will it be wasted as /home will be in a different drive? Second setup is similar to the one currently I have in Windows 10, would this be ideal? If I were to switch to a different distro, would this create a lot of work for migration? FOSS VNC server client for Linux? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 10:34 AM PDT Hi, I tried out some, but didnt really manage to get them to run. I used VNC server and viewer on Windows, Viewer works well, but server needs a license to run, although I thought 5 devices would be free? Is there a way to delete old devices if that may the cause, or use another server client on the machine I want to control? I also want to use it between Linux, Android and maybe windows [link] [comments]

Any kind of help appreciated. Thank you [link] [comments]
How to change my apps to dark theme? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 12:29 PM PDT I am using Cinnamon desktop. I switched to dark theme but some of my apps (like Dolphin) are still using the light theme and the icons are unreadable. How can I change everything to dark theme? [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Sep 2021 12:28 PM PDT So I am new to Linux and struggling to understand how some of it works (brain is still in Windows mode). My main goal is to create a media server. I am running Ubuntu 20.04. I used btrfs to create a RAID5 (I think). I am not convinced I set it up correctly. I have 4 8TB HDDs that I used to create it, but only 1 of them seems to be mounted when I look in the Disks utility. That being said, on the one that is mounted, it does say that the size is 8TB and that there is 32 TB free followed by "(230538952.9% full)". I have not loaded anything onto these disks yet, so no idea what that is all about. So, if I have miraculously created a RAID5 correctly, then the next thing I think I need to do is move my /home and /var directories to the RAID setup. What sounds like a simple task for my Windows brain does not appear to be as simple in Ubuntu. It looks like there are several steps to do it. But before I do attempt to move it, I think I need to make sure I setup the RAID5 correctly, and I am not exactly sure how to do that. I think if I were to sum this up, my primary questions would be 1. How do I check if my RAID5 setup is actually done correctly. 2. Is there a simple way to move my /home and /var directories so they reside in the RAID? 3. Am I even looking at this in the best way? Thanks you. [link] [comments]

Help me get my microphone working with pulseaudio ᵖˡˢ, ᶦ'ᵐ ᵈᵉˢᵖᵉʳᵃᵗᵉ Posted: 19 Sep 2021 11:24 AM PDT So i have this headset for about a year now and have been recently having problems with the microphone. Pulseaudio generally always sets it at 100% and the audio is a loud distorted mess, which i then have to turn it down. There is always some static in the background which i don't know the origin. For the last year this didn't impact me much, i use noisetorch and the distortion is gone. Some info: i use a headset with separate p2 entries for sound input and output. My computer has frontal headphone and microphone jacks on the front, together with usb (this connections have some noise, but it think it's just unfiltered current). I am using manjaro, latest release, as well as pulseaudio for audio. Thank you in advance. [link] [comments]
Posted: 19 Sep 2021 07:19 AM PDT Hi there everyone , So as my previous posts , I have made sure that I am going to install Linux on the laptop that I am going to buy within the month. The problem that I have is I do not know which Linux Distro to choose. After a research that I did myself I came across Linux Mint (cinnamon) , Ubuntu and Debian but I do not have that much experience on what each of them offers and that's why I would like some help , though I am definitely between those 3 so do not suggest me another distro please.
Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]

Posted: 19 Sep 2021 10:05 AM PDT I'm looking for an up-to-date guide or a tested way to get the secondary GPU on my laptop to run at an optimized level of performance. I'm running Garuda Linux, and it has Optimus Manager installed by default. The issue with Optimus Manager is that the sound card gets disabled on switch and I'm too lazy to fix that now, but I'm also not confident if it's the best option for my device. Device doesn't support Linux, really, but here's the laptop model: ASUS TUF FX705GM. I saw this post on the Arch Wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Bumblebee#Configuration and it compares the performance with nvidia-xrun, however nvidia-xrun's github shows that it was last updated in 2016, so perhaps I should use something else/Bumblebee/or settle for whatever I'm running now? My priority is performance, but I'd prefer if I could use the command line to direct processing to the Nvidia GPU. GPU: GeForce GTX1060 Mobile + Intel Integrated EDIT I'm trying to get Optimus to work properly now, as it seems like the right way. Following this: https://github.com/Askannz/optimus-manager/wiki/Nvidia-GPU-offloading-for-%22hybrid%22-mode The issue I'm having right now is that when I run either of these commands, there is no nvidia fps overlay as shown in the guide above: I installed nvidia-prime. Also, it shows both my GPUs are working here: EDIT 2: I think it works? But glxgears doesn't have the overlay at all. Here: [link] [comments]
USB read/write speeds decreasing after some time Posted: 18 Sep 2021 10:07 PM PDT Hello, I have bought a Seagate Expansion Portable Drive model SRD0NF1 (2TB model). But yesterday while trying to copy some data to the drive the speeds went down to around 20kb/s while the normal write speeds are around 150mb/s. I've had the same problem with one Phillips USB drive like a month ago but I decided to return the drive. The problem is that I'have already wrote around 160gb of data on the drive without any problems. Edit 1: My distro is ArcoLinuxB Xmonad edition. Edit 2: The way I fixed the issue is trough GNOME disks. There is a function to repair the filesystem... It turns out this way works. It fixed mounting problem that I talked about down in the comments. Thanks to everyone who commented! [link] [comments]

Posted: 19 Sep 2021 09:47 AM PDT Hey all, I recently built my first PC (16 GB of RAM, a 1 TB SSD, Ryzen 5 5600G, MSI B550 Mortar Mag) and I installed Pop!_OS on it, but I've been experiencing some issues. First and foremost is that it keeps crashing on me: the screen will freeze, except for the mouse, and I can't access the launcher or use any keyboard shortcuts and I have to do a hard reset. Some other issues included being unable to update the Slack desktop app, using Zoom caused a crash and Google Maps has also crashed in the browser. I followed the System 76 guide to troubleshoot crashing, but it didn't help. Pop!_OS version is 21.04, GNOME 3.38.5, Windowing x11; kernel is 5.13.0-7614-generic. Thanks in advance. I searched for fixes and i did the os-prober command and found windows. I then updated grub but still there's no option there. What's the propper way to add windows boot manager to grub?
