My New Apartment's Ethernet Ports Don't Work

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 03:50 PM PDT

I've been trying to get a wired connection in there for a minute. There are rj45 jacks in every room but when I plug my ethernet cord in, nothing happens. I found out where the jacks led to. They didn't have connectors so I crimped some rj45s on and plugged it into my router. Still doesn't work. So now I have to run a really long cat6 from my computer through the entire apartment. Any tips?

Upgrading to 100GbE and fiber in my house

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 12:47 AM PDT

    Heya!

I've for the longest time run a 10gbase-T network in my house, but now it's time to switch to a lower latency network and switch to SFP and fiber! Unfortunately, I've never worked with fiber, nor SFP, so I really want to make sure I have a reasonable idea of what needs to be done for this network.

Right now my plan is to have a 100GbE switch as the backbone of my network, and then where I need base-T networking, I will run a 40GbE QSFP+ to 4x10GbE LC trunk to switches with 4x10GbE uplinks, to hopefully get 40GbE between the backbone and the base-T switches. I effectively want all ports in the house to be able to run at full data rates, so I'm trying to have the uplinks match the whole throughput of switches (or at least, very close).

I've drawn out a schematic of the high-speed components of the network I have planned, I've omit all of the base-T devices as that would just clutter things up, this is really only the fiber + DAC components of the network.

I've tried to mention all patch panels, transceivers, and cables I'll need. If I'm missing something, it's probably something I genuinely do not know I need!

I'm making a lot of assumptions about how fiber works, but ultimately I plan to run 2 patch panels to each room, a OM4 (10GbE split links), and an OS2 (100GbE direct links)

For cost and latency reasons, anything that is in the server room will be a DAC, I'll only be running fiber when I need to run into the house (and exceed the DAC length limits).

I'm setting up two of these networks as I have a fully offline network as well, which you can see in the schematic. There's no redundancy, but that's kinda okay for my use cases as I'm the only person on these networks.

    Planned Schematic: https://i.imgur.com/6RgfdnB.png

Update: I bought it! Here's what I went with https://i.imgur.com/jDE9wk0.png (graphviz made it terrible but I'm not really gonna bother making it nice manually). TL;DR: I switched everything to OS2 SMF and made a massive 36 fiber trunk between my office and the server room, everything going between those rooms goes over the SMF via standard LC connectors. This was a bit more expensive in terms of transceivers, but ended up being cheaper due to cheaper SMF cabling, and fewer cassettes for all the extra fiber types!

Nessus Pro alternative for Home/SOHO environment

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 04:25 PM PDT

I'm looking for software that has similar features of Nessus Pro, yet aimed towards the SOHO / home user. I know Nessus offers a free version, but you're not allowed to use Nessus Agent with it.

I'd love to be able to have an endpoint software to feed into a vulnerability scanner. Any ideas?

Switch TP-link SG2008 - differences between v3 and v4? and is it what i need?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 05:20 PM PDT

    Hello!

It's my first time doing a home network installation, and i want to deploy vlans, to have a guest network, a cctv network, and so on

My main router is going to be a Raspberry Pi4 2gb version, and if i understand correctly, i need a managed switch in order to downstream the vlans, is that correct?

So, the cheapest managed switch that i can get here (argentina, not a lot of options really) is a TP-link SG2008 V3, is it good enough? i know there is a V4 but i can't find the differences

    Thank you!

    Router issues?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 08:13 PM PDT

What are people's thought on the Amplifi Alien router? Can it handle 20+ devices?

I had 40mbps service and had some minor issues with buffering when streaming and just under 20 devices on the Amplifi Alien. I switched to 1 gig cable service, use the same router but now have just over 20 devices but I'm getting much more buffering which doesn't make sense on the surface going from 40m service to 1 gig service. The new ISP came out and replaced an old outside line but still had trouble with buffering today. So I recently connected my tv to Ethernet and now have now had any buffering for 3 hours.

I'm wondering if the router just can't handle that many devices regardless of the 1 gig service.

Is there a router that easily handle that many devices?

Question about running 4 PC LAN network + 4 mobile hotspot outbound networks for KVM software

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 07:13 PM PDT

Synergy is a software KVM solution that afaik uses IP/TCP sockets to broadcast peripheral usage between pc's. And also I'm a total network-novice

My strange use case is that I bet (on e-sports) across multiple mini-pc's which are all connected to separate wireless T-Mobile hotspot devices, obviously because I'm not supposed to use more than one account per person/ per household.

ATM, I use 4x Keyboard + Mice to control each mini-PC individually... The solution I'm looking for is to have all 4 mini-PC's connected to a 5-port switch so that they can speak to each other for the software KVM (Synergy) to work. Then I would have a monitor which has PBP (Picture By Picture) functionality where I can drag my mouse seamlessly between all 4 pc's and control them with one keyboard.

I got the idea from this linus tech tip video where he has 4 different OS's running on one monitor with Synergy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9u1vX-pvLs&t=2s

The difference is I need all 4 PC's on one LAN network for the software to function, while having them all communicate with the web on their respective mobile cellular hotspots. My outbound requests can absolutely not come from the same IP.

I guess what I'm wondering is would a simple "unmanaged" switch work for the thing I'm trying to accomplish or do I need more configurability with it?

Thanks a million times over for reading.

Dell power connect switch shuts down all ports when certain device plugged in

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 12:37 PM PDT

I have a Dell 2708 switch that uplinks to my coda cable modem iny home.

I've been migrating our TiVo whole home From moca coax to Ethernet to get better stability, and the last box seems to have created a problem! When the last box is plugged in, it gets online for a couple of minutes and watching tv, then suddenly offline, no eth link . I go back to the switch, and all the ports are dark. I reset the power, and back to normal. Without that one box plugged in, everything is stable for months. There's no log function in this dell switch, and it's management functions are all stock.

The moca never worked well enough, tv randomly stopped a few times per week while watching. Since moving the stuff to Ethernet, it's been perfect. I'd hate to have to enable the moca interface of the cable modem again just for the one stupid box in a kids play room that barely gets used...

I can't imagine what condition could possibly shut down all the ports on an 8 port dell switch that doesn't even have Poe.

2 story and basement wired mesh

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 06:16 PM PDT

I need some guidance on how to set this up. We are moving into a new home with the networking space in the basement. Hardwired internet in 4 locations in the home, all feeding into the basement network room, Xfinity gigabit. Do I wire all 4 into a modem in the networking space? Is that possible? Or one into a modem, and the rest into a router in the networking room, and add the mesh components to other parts of the home?

I can toy around with it next week but want to make sure I get the right equipment for full coverage and speed.

How important is baked-in security for a mesh?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 05:47 PM PDT

I'm kind of annoyed that Netgear charges for their security suite and wondering how important the baked-in security feature is over simply throwing on Windows Defender and some decent browser extensions for systems?

My parents live next door and are soaking in some of my sweet extended bandwidth so while I am confident in not clicking on phishing links and general garbage you find on the internet I'm not so confident with them.

I'm even considering returning my RBK50 for something like a ZenWiFi AC if only to take advantage of the built-in free security package while retaining many of the advertised features (AC3000 Tri-band, backhaul).

Or is it really just kind of fluff and I shouldn't worry too much about it?

OpenVPN - Bad encapsulated packet length from peer (5635), which must be > 0 and <= 1627

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 12:15 PM PDT

Moved from Cox over to ATT fiber, put the ATT fiber box in "passthrough" mode and my OpenVPN server started to generate this. My Firewall is a P220, other services from the WAN in are working just fine. However OpenVPN throws the error in the subject.

    The things done so far:

    • cleared out all of the firewall/security settings on the ATT WAN router/Firewall to match the "security" of my Cox Coax Modem - No change
    • Changed MSS values on the OpenVPN server and client to match the WAN MTU of 1500, dropped to 1480, then 1440, then 1420 - did not help at all.
    • Tried a different port, I run 1194, tested 80/443, 8443, 9443 and so on - Same error

Only thing I can think of is ATT is intercepting the packet before I get it and its screwing with the MTU. Before I setup a TAP port and pcap the client out and in traffic I want to see if anyone else had this issue with the ATT setup and was able to work around it.

TCP Connection cut suddenly while downloading files around 1GB, can't figure out why.

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 09:28 AM PDT

Hey folks, I'm kinda desperate as with some big files (the Unity3D engine for example, or other completely unrelated files like test files from the internet) the download dies abruptly without any symptom I can recognize.

I have a glass fiber connection with a ONT connected to a fritzbox router via eth cable.

The problem happens on different computers and even with a different router. I ran a TCP dump in the router and what I see is that tcp packages just stop coming in from the server, without any other hint. It looks like the connection is being completely truncated as the router tries to keep ACKing the last pack but it never receives any response anymore.

Another very weird fact is that this happens only with files that are > 1GB and most often than not the download stops around 1GB. Downloading other files is completely fine (I tried from many different sites to download software or big files in general)

This seems to be mitigated if I have multiple files downloading at the same time, as in those cases sometimes the download goes through.

I'm a software engineer (so I can run all the tools you need and that can run on a MacBook).

I'm very grateful for any suggestion you could give me as I'm out of options.

Some doubts about port forwarding. Need help!

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 03:18 PM PDT

I have been trying to setup a media server with Plex, but I need some clarification.

Apparently I managed to set up a port forward just right. But I tried to access the plex media server interface outside my home network and didn't manage to.

What I tried to do is to look for my public IP (looked it at a website that check IP leaks) and type it on the browser followed by :XXXXX (X being the port I forwarded). But it didn't manage to connect to it.

Now, it might be sounding super dumb, but I have no networking knowledge, and just forwarding took me quite a while.

So, basically, how to access the forwarded port from the internet? Did I do something wrong?

PS.: I am able to access my PLEX server from a PLEX app outside of the network. It apparently works fine. What I want to do is to manage my library outside my network, but I do not know the concept behind accessing a forwarded port - I don't know if I should be able to access it by any browser just typing my public_IP:Port_number, or if I would need to set up something else first.

Router randomly crashing when Ethernet cable is plugged in

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 09:01 AM PDT

I recently moved into a temporary place with included internet access. Seeing I will only be here for a few months, I do not plan on getting my own router and modem, so I am using the provided Arris DG3270A. I was using WiFi for a few days, but ran an Ethernet cable to my main PC. After using the cable and using for a few days, all of a sudden, the whole network went down (both Ethernet and WiFi). I first thought this was an outage, but after restarting the router, all was well. A few hours later, another full network down. This happens at random, but continues to be an issue.

I have tried a few things.

    1. Checking router for error logs (nothing)
    2. Restarting the device and gateway (nothing)
    3. Plugging into different Ethernet ports (nothing)
    4. Updating firmware (Unable to do so)

I also unplugged the cable for a day and did not notice any disconnections, although that day the PC was not on for very long. Plugged it in this morning and experienced an error pretty quickly. My motherboard has two Ethernet ports, an Intel GbE port and Realtek 2.5GbE LAN port. All disconnections have occured when plugged into the Intel port, but I did switch to the Realtek one but it has been too little time (less than 1 hour) to tell if it makes a difference. I did try resetting my PCs network settings and updating the Intel drivers, but nothing. Back in my full time home, this PC is always plugged in and has never seen this kind of issue, although I am using my own modem and router there.

One thing that jumped out to me was in the LAN DHCP Server Settings, the lease time is only 3600 seconds. I am unsure on whether or not this could be causing the issue, although 1 hour seems quite low to me.

I have not yet contacted the ISP (Hargray), although that will likely be the next step.

I will post an update if the issue appears again.

Any ideas on what this could be?

    Network card and ping

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 12:46 PM PDT

    Hey,
I have 1GB fiber wired connection but have a really weird thing going on : my ping and upload on speed test are both pretty bad ( around 50 ping and from 100 to 200mb upload depending on the day). I cannot play games online because the ping jumps to 100 every seconds.
I tried on my laptop using both wifi and wired connections and they are working as they should be (10 ping with 950 MB's). Which means the issue should be my motherboard/network device on my main PC.

And here's the weird thing : I got the same high quality connection on my PC whenever I reset ( disconnect and connect) my network card which is attached to my motherboard. My MB is pretty old now but I never had issues with it before ( driver is Realtek 1Gb something like that ).

Is there a way to get it permanently fixed so I don't have to reset my card every time I launch my computer to get a quality internet ?
    Cheers.

    Looking for assistance with Routers

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 12:42 PM PDT

New to the subreddit, would this be the place to go for help deciding between routers? I am looking at a TP LINK AC1750 or an AC2600. I am not sure what the specs all mean. I think 2.4/5.0 is better than dual channel/band. Also that beam forming is a good thing. Beyond that I don't have time to research all this junk. One is $50 and the other is $90. I guess is it really worth it for me to spend $90 on a router? I game on a PS4, and stream a lot through a PS4 and chromcast. I also have 3 Alexa dots and several WiFi devices (bulbs, switches, a camera, and thermostat).

Redoing home network for security and speed

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 08:35 AM PDT

Hello, I'm very new to this, but I did a little research and watched some videos on it, but I wanted to ask more specific questions to what I have to work with.

My family currently has Verizon Fios, so we have the Modem/Router (forgot the exact name for it) as well as a Linksys EA7400 router. We set it up a few years ago, but we didn't care too much about how we did it, and did the bare minimum, in terms of setting up SSID's and new passwords. However, with cyber security being such a big issue, as well as my family acquiring more smart devices, I wanted to re-setup our home network for security and speed.

Since we technically have 2 routers, do I need to setup a WAP for best results? I'm not entirely sure how a WAP works either. But in terms of setup, I wanted to have the main two networks, one 2.4GHz and the other 5GHz, as well as separate guest and IOT networks. I tried to read up and watch some videos on setting up the IOT network, but it's still a bit confusing for me. I wanted to set it up, so it can't access any information from the main networks, but the main networks can send information to the network and all its devices. So that way we don't need to be connected to the IOT network in order to use all the smart devices. When I was watching videos, from what I understood, ports need to selected for specific devices, but this is where I found it to be most confusing. Since we have a decent amount of varying smart devices, such as Smart TV's, LED lights, chrome casts, etc., as well as some Solar Panel receiver. So I'm not entirely sure where to get started on this.

Anyone who's read up to this point, thank you, I'd appreciate any advice as well as free resources that would help!

WiFi Localization With Multiple Radios on a single AP

    Posted: 18 Sep 2021 12:01 PM PDT

    Hello r/HomeNetworking community,

I tried to post this to r/networking but the bot told me to come here.

I am working on a school project that involves WiFi localization using wireless access points operating in promiscuous mode. When I first began my project I was planning on using simple Raspberry Pis to sniff traffic heading over the wireless network, capture the device MAC addresses and signal strength, and use that to track the device's location. However, after some initial proof of concept testing I realized that the accuracy of this method of wireless localization is not what I had hoped for. I was aiming for an error size of about 1 meter when guessing the device's distance from the access point but I was ending up with error readings in the 7-8 meter range.

In my quest to solve this problem I began reading up on different methods companies use for WiFi localization. In this I found various devices like Cisco Hyperlocation that use multiple spacial streams to improve measurements of distance and approximate an angle from an access point.

The only way I can imagine that this type of localization is possible is if these devices are able to read different signal strengths from different radios at the same time. I have been searching for days trying to figure out how to do this, or if this is even possible. So I come to you with these questions: Am I on the right track trying to figure out how to read different spatial streams at the same time and using the difference in signal to approximate location? If I am, are there any resources you can point me to to show me how to do this on OpenWRT or a similar operating system (even normal Linux is okay)? If I am completely off base can you explain to me how companies like Cisco are doing this and point me to some reading to learn more about it? Even the most general of answers will be of great help to me.

Thank you for taking your time to read this it is of great help to me. I want to apologize if my lack of knowledge is making you scream at your monitor, I am a programing student who has very little experience doing anything related to wireless networking and networking in general. I also want to apologize profusely if this is the wrong sub for this, I know how annoying off topic posts can be. The only reason I am even posting here to begin with is because I am so lost on this project.

    Thanks again!
