ThinkPad L13 Yoga vs Samsung Galaxy Book Flex 2

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 09:46 PM PDT

So I have found these two options near me of similar price.

They both have the i5 processor, 8 GB of Ram, and 256GB SSD

I am going to be traveling/working internationally this next year so durability/reliability is the most important factor.

I would also like to do some video editing/Photoshop every now and then.

    What would you choose?

Laptop running FFXIV for 500€ ?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 03:43 AM PDT

    Hi !

My girlfriend is looking to buy a new laptop that she'd use as a college student, and would also like to be able to play the mmorpg Final Fantasy XIV on it. It doesn't matter to her if it's bulky since she's already been using the bulkiest laptop for years now, and she's okay with the game running at the lowest settings. It would just be nice if it could handle 30FPS. We're open to refurbd/used, and really the computer would either be used to play FFXIV, take notes in classes, and go on the internet.

The budget is 500€ (buying in France if possible) which I realize isn't much. Still, I'd rather ask some people who know better than immediately throw in the towel and say it's impossible.

Thanks for taking the time to reply !

    Affordable laptop for gaming/mainly sims 3 ?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 02:45 AM PDT

hi, so my current laptop needs replacing soon. The biggest problem with it is that it's pretty slow and randomly freezes, especially when playing games like sims 3, so I'm looking to get one with better performance.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: about £800
    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?** preferably not
    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?** performance>battery life>build quality>form factor
    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?** quite important, I would prefer one that's thin/light but I'm open to other options
    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** mainly Sims 3 with all expansion packs & mods, also sims 4, minecraft, and skyrim (all with mods/dlc) . I'm not intending to use it for modern/super intensive games. Also it would be great if it can run programs like Photoshop.
    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** as mentioned before Sims 3 with expansion packs/mods, on high settings. Basically as long as it runs smoothly with all the expansions/mods without much lagging/freezing/long loading times. For sims 4/minecraft/skyrim it would also be great to run them on high settings.
    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** none
    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I've found this one which seems decent https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08BLHPTTT/?coliid=I38LFJR2PANUWM&colid=1FY8S8WNUNJFI&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it would this be a good fit for me ? And I'm open to any other suggestions :) thank you

Need a coding/light gaming laptop for school… preferably $600 but if pressed will go to $800

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 04:07 PM PDT

I don't know how to copy and paste those forms everyone uses so I will try to include all relevant information in this post.

I am a programming student so I need GOOD BATTERY LIFE and not too bulky. 16gb ram. At least 516gb SSD.

Most important to me is a good cpu that won't be bogged down with many programs open, and preferably a dedicated GPU that can handle LoL and maybe a little more, nothing crazy but still considered good for gaming.

As title mentions, 6-700 is ideal but my budget can push 800… if I left anything out it means I'm probably not concerned about it, but if needed let me know and I will add it.

    Thank you in advance!

    student+sahm needs new laptop

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 02:38 AM PDT

I have had an ancient Mac book pro for 10+years. I finally got it recycled and am looking for a new laptop for online school. I won't do much other than Microsoft programs, YouTube and other things like that. I want it to be pretty portable since I have to move around my house a lot. I was leaning towards the new Mac book air m1 since I'm so used to using a mac. The only problem is that I'm afraid it would be easily breakable if my toddler came in contact with it. So a durable laptop would also be preferable. Price point less than 1000

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 02:18 AM PDT

I'm going to buy a laptop for studying but I'd also like for it to run the 2 games I mentioned. What CPU and what GPU should it have to run those 2 at 60 FPS in Low settings? Trying not to burn as much money as possible.

Need a suggestion for a laptop for video/music editing and streaming Jackbox on twitch. My budget is $1k, and I'm in the US.

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 06:09 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$1,000 USD, but I'd rather spend less if possible. I'm also willing to wait for sales or even black Friday/cyber Monday to save some money.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I care most about performance and durability

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    17 inch min

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I will want to run DaVinci resolve, Photoshop and will want to stream jackbox party packs on twitch (but I'm not really into any type of serious gaming). I may also want to run sound/music editing software but I'm not sure which programs since I'm a beginner.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Jackbox party packs

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Not really, just something that is quality and won't break easily.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

What are the minimum specs I would need for all of this? What laptop (s) would y'all recommend?

    CS student searching for Laptop

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 01:03 AM PDT

I need a laptop preferable thin and not that heavy. Budget is 1300€, at max. like 1400€. Ill use the laptop for some coding some word and stuff, webbrowsing, so nothing really crazy. I live in Germany i want something new and something that feels good to type on.

So on the one hand i was looking into macbooks:

M1 base Macbook Pro (8Core CPU and GPU, 256GB Storage and 8GB Ram 13inch) [1304€]

    or

    M1 Macbook Air (8Core CPU and GPU 512GB, Storage and 8GB Ram 13inch) [1260€]

Main reason for the pro beeing the longer battery life. Also because im a Student id get Airpods for free.

    -------------

On the other hand i am not sure if i should go with a windows laptop, so i havent really looked into whats good there.

I need a windows laptop that will make other web developers Jealous

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 12:05 AM PDT

I'm starting a new job and they've asked me to pick a laptop, docking station and monitors. I can probably handle docking station and monitors, but I need a very cool windows laptop because everyone else is using macs and I don't want to roll in with some dumb plastic laptop that looks like the computer equivalent of New Balance shoes. I wanna be a pair of Vans.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

About 3000 USD, from the manufacturer. Not looking for an amazon listing or some discounted rate from a bargain website.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

No 2-in-1s. No chromebooks. Fantastic build quality. Average to above average battery life. Great performance - I'll be running local webservers and testing lots of code all day.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I have a long walk, so weight matters, thinness not so much but I don't want something super thick!

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15in -17in

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

There will likely be some Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and Premiere work being done at some point.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    n/a

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard and touchpad is a must, as is good build quality. I want to pull this out in front of other web developers and feel like I could hang. If not make them envious.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

It has to be windows. It has to be able to run complex scripts and programs and graphic intensive stuff like photoshop as well as be able to dock easily - but above all it has to be cool. I'll be the only Windows guy in an office full of Apple users and if I'm gonna stick out I want to do it with style.

College student, coding / light gaming

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 08:18 AM PDT

•Notes: I am a 20 year old college student switching from a MacBook because I hate it. I want to switch to windows. I have basically zero knowledge regarding laptops. I am a statistics major that uses R, SQL, and Python. I will also be using it for some light gaming like Persona 4.

•Budget: From USA, $400-$1,000 I prefer the cheaper side if practical.

•Refurbs/Used: Want brand new, but if practical, I am willing to.

•Form factor, build, performance, battery: I want good battery life and performance.

•Weight and thinness: I carry it in my backpack, so I would prefer it to be a bit thin.

    •Preferred screen: N/A

•CAD, editing, gaming: R, Python, SQL, light gaming

•Games: Persona 4 is all I have in mind lol

    •No specific requirements

    Thank you in advance.

Current Mac user thinking of switching. What's the best laptop for someone who likes to keep a million browser tabs open at a time?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 04:26 PM PDT

Hello! I've been using MacBooks for the past 10 years and am wondering if I should switch to a non-Mac after having too many issues with them. My last laptop was a MacBook Pro that I'd had for about 3-4 years before its screen decided to stop working, and now I'm using my mom's Air that is...ridiculously slow.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1000 USD, including software (for word processing etc. I plan on using open source software, so software doesn't have to be a huge factor in the budget)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes? I want something that will last me a long time. I'd like to hear others' experiences of using pre-owned computers because I'm not sure how reliable that is.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
To be honest, I don't much about about this stuff. I like to have a lot of browser tabs open at a time. I also plan on learning Excel so it would need to run that as well. I'd love a 2-in-1 so that I can handwrite notes, but it's a want and not a need – but it is a STRONG want.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not as important as performance, but I do have chronic back pain so portability is a plus.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Thinking about 14", but not a huge priority. If for some reason there's nothing in that size that'll fit my needs, I'd prefer to go larger rather than smaller.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Light gaming such as Minecraft is preferred, but not mandatory. If I get a 2-in-1 I'd probably use (open source) drawing software, but that's really a maybe and shouldn't be a serious consideration.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I'm really not a big gamer...Minecraft is probably the most intense I'd get and settings/FPS don't matter to me as long as it runs smoothly.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I hate the touchbar on the new MacBook Pros and prefer having actual keys to press. I tend to type heavily, so a quieter keyboard would be a nice bonus (I get migraines with bad sound sensitivity to the point where the sound of typing is painful).
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Should I stick with Macs or branch out? So far, my research has led me to the Dell Inspiron and the Lenovo ThinkPad. Are these good options? What else should I be looking into? Thank you in advance!

Mostly everyday use on a budget, ideas?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 06:05 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $800 usd

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Totally. I love eBay.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build quality, then performance, then battery life. I want it to feel like it's high quality.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Very! The lighter the better.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13" ish max

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Sometimes I use Affinity Designer/Photo.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    I don't game.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I am all about the feel of a keyboard. Travel of each key is well…key! I do not want a touchscreen/2 in 1.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I do a lot of writing and always have about 20 tabs open at a time. Video or music streaming is normally in another window. Thanks!

-I'm used to a aprox. 34,5 cm x 19,5 cm screen, but I'm flexible to other options.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Programs I would like to run:
      -Illustrator
      -Indesign
      -Photoshop
      -SAI
Games I would like to run:
      -Onmyoji rpg
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
-I have a huion kamvas 13 (not the pro one, unfortunately lol), and while having to use a multi usb charger isn't an issue, It would be nice If I didn't have to go out my way to buy one (ofc is not a deal breaker). Also planning to eventually get an XP innovator.
-Since I'm planning to use my screen tablet in conjunction with the laptop, I would like to avoid touch screens or dual screen ones.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
-I want to be able to use the laptop without it overheating too much, lagging to hell or experiencing audio and video issues in case I have software running while the game is on auto or similars. Basically something that can run things smoothly.
      Thanks in advance!

Looking for a 3060 laptop with either Ryzen or Intel processors

Hi, and thanks in advance. I'm in the market for a gaming laptop. Can I get some suggestion on screen quality/thermal dissipation/general feel of use? My budget is at 1500$, but I can go a bit further if it means better build quality and longer-lasting endurance as a whole (not really looking to dump a grand or more on something that degrades in a year's time)

    My preferred specs are:
    3060@90W/115W

    R7/i7

    16GB DDR4@3200

    512GB+ of NVMe

    15.6" or bigger

    120Hz minimum
