Hosting a network on my PC for my smart home devices hidden from my school's network admins Posted: 30 Sep 2021 03:48 PM PDT I am currently a college student living on campus and I have brought some smart home devices with me. A Google Home Mini and a Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Plug Mini. I had a router hosting a wireless network under the school's previously, but have now been emailed to take it down, as it is against housing policy. I think that they identified the DHCP fingerprint of my router but I'm honestly not sure. My next idea is to host a network from my PC with a wireless network card and connect my smart home devices to that. I still run the risk of having my subnetwork found so my questions are: 2) How can I avoid the same fate when making a network through my PC? [link] [comments] |
Building an office in our backyard and need to run internet to it. What're my options? Posted: 30 Sep 2021 06:43 PM PDT Hey y'all, I'm not nearly as advanced as some of y'all here but you seemed like the folks to ask.
What're my options here? I suppose I could run a long ethernet cord from my router inside the house, dig a trench the 30 feet and drill into the office. But is it better to call the cable company and see if they'd splice a line into the office? Is that a thing that happens or have I just imagined it? If I were to run a cable out and trench it, could I then plug that into ANOTHER router or is that crazy talk? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Sep 2021 09:20 AM PDT Sorry if the title doesn't make any sense. What I am looking to do is setup a rpi with a vpn so that any computer can connect to the internet though the pi and be using the vpn it has installed. I can't install a vpn on the computer in question because I don't have permissions to but I would like to use a vpn on it. Is there someway to do what I am suggesting? Everything I have searched has turned up guides for how to setup a vpn to connect to your home network remotely which is not what I'm looking for. Thanks! EDIT: Thanks for you help guys, such a helpful group of people here. Gonna end up going with the mango router and having the VPN setup. Will use it as an router when I can and a repeater otherwise. Posted: 30 Sep 2021 03:00 PM PDT Hey! I have a problem I need to solve in regards to getting a no latency VOIP. My wife and I game in the same room and like to talk over the PC so we don't have to take our headset off (and we stream so getting that feed is important) but so far things like discord etc tend to come with a little bit of lag (team speak has some as well) and this can be a little off-putting when we can faintly hear each other in the background and then hear ourselves over TS/Discord a few seconds later. Does anyone know how we could use software that would have 0 to not noticeable voice so we can talk with each other? We are on 2 separate internet connections with ethernet. I have seen this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking/comments/div7ha/zero_lag_voice_chat_over_lan/ But due to having 2 separate internets I don't think this will work? if it helps as well as my ethernet cable my PC also has a wifi card that can connect to that 2nd internet that my wife uses. Thanks for any advice! :) [link] [comments] |
Buying a 2nd hand FortiGate from US (live in Australia) Posted: 30 Sep 2021 08:32 PM PDT Hi Guys, Just wondering if anyone knows of any issues that I might encounter when buying a 2nd hand FortiGate 60E when from the US when living in Australia - I cant think of any issues, I know there are definitely region regulations in regards to Wi-Fi gear but wasn't sure if there were any differences in regards to firewalls. Apologies if this is something that has been covered numerous times before. Thanks [link] [comments] |
What is the best way to test if my current cat5e can handle 2.5gig? Posted: 30 Sep 2021 02:31 PM PDT Title pretty much says it all. I'm looking to upgrade to wi-fi 6 and 2.5gig throughout the house. Currently every room is wired with cat5e, and I want to make sure my cable can handle it before I make the investment of a switch and access points. How can I make sure my current cat5e will run at 2.5GBASE-T? [link] [comments] |
Wifi 6 Issues w/ Netgear Nighthawk XR1000? Posted: 30 Sep 2021 04:35 PM PDT Hi everyone, I upgraded my router last month to a XR1000 WIFI6 Nighthawk and have been having a few issues with it. I got it refurbished so I'm not sure if it is faulty or not. Essentially, I have 500 down/40 up internet and wanted to future proof so I returned my older router (Nighthawk RC7000) and got this WIFI 6 one. I do play a good bit of games, by no means a streamer or taking it too seriously, but I wanted to get something with a bit better range as I rent and can't really easily run cable to my office. Since I set the new one up the performance is great, like 100 more mbps down and higher upload speeds as well on the 5g band. Signal is great too. Ping hasnt changed and retransmission has increased, but just slightly. The signal pretty often will randomly drop down to about 10mbps down/ 1 up once or twice a day but never longer than a minute or two. But the biggest thing I noticed is my ping while gaming is super unstable now. It used to stay around 65, 75 ms with maybe one or two spikes above 90 a session. Now it will be all over the place, like between 60-160ms with jumps the entire time. I thought it was because the wifi card wasn't wifi 6 compatible but on my phone which is compatible I have the same random speed loss. All in all it just seems like the signal is less stable, but more powerful than before. So I'm not sure if this is a problem with the router being refurbished? Or if you all could suggest a different set up? I'd ideally like to stick with something that could get me close to my theoretical 500 down speed, with my old router hovering around 250 down and this one around 400, 450. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Sep 2021 04:31 PM PDT Hey guys, I also added the second domain in the Nginx config file but now I only can use the first domain and get a timeout at the second. I guess it is because the domain is built like this: "myName.ddnss.de". pls can someone help me add two domains or add another subdomain to it like "test.myName.ddnss.de" Here is my config file: [link] [comments] |
Question about AT&T routers and the big Sep. 30th security certificate expiration Posted: 30 Sep 2021 08:11 PM PDT I only found out about this recently and as I am a u-verse customer, I am wondering if AT&T has prepared for this? Should my AT&T router have been updated by them wirelessly already without the need for a tech to come out? Just concerned about potentially losing net and phone (landline) connection tomorrow because of this. [link] [comments] |

Wherever possible, multiple access points are the best way to run WiFi, right? Posted: 30 Sep 2021 03:24 PM PDT Hi folks, I'm not a big WiFi user (do 90% of my computing from my desktop or watch TV from my media center which is also wired off ethernet). But having caught the networking bug, it makes sense to cover all bases - including getting WiFi around the place, particularly as the other apartment resident works off a laptop. Over the past month, I've been buying a few components from my local tech store to rig up a nice failover system (I have a cellular router on the network going through a load balancer for backup connectivity). Every time I go in, the guy goes on and on about mesh networks and how instead of whatever I'm doing (which I don't think he understands) I should set up a mesh network instead. Firstly, the WiFi in our smallish rented apartment is pretty much fine. But I've also been having a really hard time trying to understand why these things are so popular - especially among bricks and mortar tech salespeople. Based on everything I've learned about networking so far, ethernet is the gold standard / only way to retain your baseline connectivity speed. The moment you try to move connectivity through the air even through a better system like mesh networking... you're going to lose speed, packets, and latency. It seems obvious to me that the ideal way to wire up any space for WiFi right now would be to use ethernet runs and set up enough APs to provide coverage. I know Ubiquiti even has a tool to help you spec out how many APs you need. Am I missing something? Do tech store guys just like pushing bad products? We rent at the moment but my aspiration is to own one day. And the network design I have in mind includes basically some really good APs for WiFi. TL;DR: Outside of situations like renting—where people might be unable to put down ethernet—I'm struggling to understand why things like mesh networks and repeaters are so popular. Is there a reason for this other than the fact that they're pretty easy to set up? [link] [comments] |
ASUS RT-AC5300 random Internet disconnections Posted: 30 Sep 2021 06:54 PM PDT I've been having a struggle troubleshooting with my AC5300. It will randomly show the red "Internet disconnected" light, and it is doing it even as I type this -- however, I still have Internet working on this machine somehow? It seems to disconnect specific hosts randomly as well, or for example, one phone will have no Internet but be connected successfully to the router, while the rest of the network devices are totally unaffected. So right now, for example, two computers on the network are actively in a video conference call with no Internet issues, but the router page shows "Disconnected" and the red light is on -- all while another device is completely unable to connect. When it acts up like this, I am unable to ping both google.com and 8.8.8.8 from my computer (IP vs domain ping tests), however, I can fully access Google from a web browser on this computer. I tried pinging these both from my phone as well (also over WiFi) and have no success; however, I'm fully able to access websites, apps, and run a speedtest, etc. I've SSH'd into two different wired hosts and been able to successfully ping these external servers with no problem though. The router is in passthrough mode, connected to the Internet through a Pace 5268AC to AT&T fiber. When the network experiences these issues, I am unable to ping the 5268AC IP address, but have success pinging the AC5300 IP address. I'm really not sure what to do from here. I've tried scheduling nightly reboots on the AC5300, since rebooting it (or rebooting the 5268AC) tends to temporarily fix this. It's the strangest issue, and the router logs don't seem to show anything helpful every time I check them after seeing these problems. [link] [comments] |
Second MoCA adapter doesn't have internet connection Posted: 30 Sep 2021 06:33 PM PDT I just moved to a new place and the wifi reception is awful so I went about figuring out how to set up a hard lined connection in my own room. Every room has a live Coax connection in this house so I figured the best solution would be MoCA. I just setup the MoCA system and wifi is working fine all lights are green and I can access the settings from my browser while logged into the wifi. However my Ethernet port is not getting internet access I have moved the PoE filter and used different splitters on the modem connection all to no avail. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas as to why I don't have internet access via Ethernet or if I can figure out why I am not getting internet access. I'm very close to just getting a wifi mesh system but I want to give this another shot before I abandon it altogether. [link] [comments] |

Looking for advice to improve WiFi connection in basement Posted: 30 Sep 2021 02:35 PM PDT I live in a basement apartment in a house (rent includes WiFi and other utilities) and I often have trouble with the WiFi connection. It goes in and out on FaceTime and Zoom, which hasn't been a problem since I haven't been relying on it for work. I've recently come into a position that will require me to have a strong WiFi connection and I'm looking for ways to achieve this. I believe the internet equipment is on the main floor in the bedroom/office space, which is not that far from the basement (the house is rather small). What are some ways to boost my WiFi connection? I can speak with the home owner to see if there are any minor improvements that can be made before I go out and buy something, however, I wonder if buying an extender/booster is worth the investment when I move out. Do you have any go to solutions for this sort of problem? TIA! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Sep 2021 02:20 PM PDT I recently purchased a house and am looking for a setup that can spread the signal well including to outdoor security cameras. House is 2 floors with a basement. I was looking at range extenders with a regular wifi router but was also looking at the Mesh systems and MU-MIMO if they are different. The setup will need to be efficient enough to handle normal daily use plus wireless camera system for security. I game on a hardline so im not worried about any signal loss for gaming. My main focus i guess is to ensure that my cameras dont lose signal. Any help is appreciated. Been trying to do some research on my own but between work, baby #2 on the way, setting up inspections on new home, buying furniture etc its been a little hard to focus and security is a huge priority when it comes to my family at home. How to do a DHCP reservation on a ASUS router? Posted: 30 Sep 2021 02:02 PM PDT My August lock was draining batteries quickly and the solution that their support provided was 1) use a wifi bridge hub (which they're sending), and 2) do a DHCP reservation for the lock/hub. I found this article but is this essentially what I need to do, or is manual IP assignment different? [link] [comments] |
Modem dropping internet 5-10 sec at a time, ISP says downstream power seems too high? Posted: 30 Sep 2021 11:42 AM PDT Possibly important details: Modem: Motorola MB8611 ISP: Vyve Broadband (small town company) Intended internet speeds: 1gig Hey all, Been having issues with my internet the last week or so, I noticed it while playing Diablo II and would get disconnected randomly even though the internet seemed to be fine. Then I noticed issues with being connected to work services, and discord would also lag out for about 5-10 seconds at a time as well. Now I'm also having issues connecting to some services. Called my ISP today, and they said my modem's Downstream Power seemed too high. I took a screenshot of what my modem was reading, and also have the data the ISP sent here: https://imgur.com/a/jZO9p2e He said the usual target for my downstream power should be between 3-5 dBmV. Do these numbers look concerning to anybody? Is there any way for me to change any settings to manage downstream power with my modem? They are sending out a tech to check their hardware but I'm really hoping to not have to push through these issues for a week if it can be avoided. Thanks in advance for your help! Did I just make a rookie mistake? ISP Demarc for home cabling... Posted: 30 Sep 2021 05:28 PM PDT Hi, I hope this is the right forum for this. I used to be in IT but my chops have gotten somewhat rusty since I left. I never really saw how demarcation points were setup and it just dawned on me that I may have goofed... I am building a new home (two weeks from completion) and in the process I hired one of my old cabling contacts to run wiring to a patch panel in our mudroom closet (3IP cameras and 5 rooms). AT&T is coming tomorrow to setup the connection. As I sit here though I'm realizing that ALL cabling going to the patch panel is internal to the home. I have no ethernet or coaxial running to any exterior points of the home... So my question is, did I mess up here by completely forgetting to set something up for a Demarc point? Or, can AT&T somehow run/drill wiring into the closet where the patch panel is for me? It faces a ground floor exterior wall so access shouldn't be terribly difficult. Thanks in advance! New router, Internet still having issues. Posted: 30 Sep 2021 05:13 PM PDT 📷 This was all happening to my computer that had ethernet Before buying a new router, my internet has been going in and out everyday, every hour or so it will flicker off for a few seconds and then turn back on. This was happening to my computer that had ethernet aswell. Now my new router came in which is the ASUS (RT-AX68U). First day and second day thing is performing as expected; Farther WiFi range, more consistent connection, etc. About an hour ago the internet has done something I've never seen before. All WiFi devices lost connection aswell as my ethernet connected computer, but for some reason I had a Livestream open and it did not lose any connection. The livestream stayed at 1080p and the chat was still loading. This was the first outage on the new router as well. I have a feeling that something else on than the router has been causing these problems but im not the most tech savvy person, other than understanding a basic google search. I dont know if its the provider causing these problems, or possibly the modem, maybe even the wires connecting to my house. If anyone has any suggestions or help please let me know. Any 2.5gbps or Higher WAN Routers Out There for Consumers? Posted: 30 Sep 2021 01:28 PM PDT My ISP is starting to push 2gbps internet at the start of next year (Frontier in SoCal). What routers are there in the wild that have a WAN port that supports that speed? I'm currently using an Edgerouter 4, and Ubiquiti stuff is crazy high priced. Not seeing anything by TP-Link. I prefer to have a wired router and use access points, but is getting a router with built in wifi the only way I'm getting a router with that speed WAN port? [link] [comments] |
Found out why the coax light wasn't turning on w/ Moca. Posted: 30 Sep 2021 01:26 PM PDT This is very aggravating. Every coax outlet in the house is like this except for the ones that already have TVs plugged into them (I was told every outlet was wired). What's the point of putting the outlet there in the first place then? I assume there's absolutely no way to wire this thru the walls myself. FML The only other way my system will work is if I get two splitters, one for the downstairs coax and one for the upstairs in another room, and run a very long ethernet cable from the upstairs Moca into my room. Feels like a lot of speed loss through the moca and then another ~50ft of Ethernet but it seems like that's my only option. Anyone else have any ideas? [link] [comments] |
