Are you a point and click tech, a parts and labour tech or a hot pointy solder tech? Posted: 30 Sep 2021 04:04 PM PDT Where do most of your repairs sit and do you stray into other areas of repair? A point and click tech would be someone who mostly focuses on software support, configuring things, remoting into peoples computers and helping them with how to use / resolve issues mainly with software. A parts and labour tech would be someone who identifies a faulty component and replaces it. Mostly hardware work, faulty hard drives, power supplies, graphics cards and the like. My computer isn't booting, isn't displaying a picture, crashing after i do this with it. Identify the fault, order and install a replacement. Hot pointy solder tech is like Rossman or Northbridge Fix. Component level repairs, usually involving a soldering iron and a multi-meter. Extends to things like phones, gaming consoles, tablets and other devices. I figure most people are some combination of all three and likely you wouldn't be turning away work that comes your way but I'd be interested to know what percentage of your work comes in these forms and what you find to be the most enjoyable / profitable. When I worked in the shop we were mostly software/hardware support and any chip level repairs I'd either replace or send away for repair. I used to cop a bit of flak from some customers that I wouldn't actually 'repair' the computers because I wasn't soldering things but at the time my boss argued it just wasn't cost effective because it ran the risk of recurring issues. Anyway, I'm on my own now and trying to figure out whether I should learn component level repair and shell out for a solder station and all the ephemera that goes along with that. [link] [comments] |
