Wholesome parent messaged me on pcpartpicker

    Posted: 31 Jul 2021 10:40 PM PDT

He said "Hi [Name] -Sorry to bother you -My son is 12 years old and he is in the process of assembling a gaming computer .... - we really liked your unique model, which you built on July 25, 2021 and published on the website https://pcpartpicker.com/ I am asking you to provide me or post on this site a complete description of all parts and spare parts that you have installed on your gaming computer. I don't understand anything about it. I ask you, it will be easier for me and my child please do a big favor Thank you very much! We look forward to hearing." This was so cool and cute and I responded to them with a link to my build and explained some basics. What else should I say to help them out?

    3600MHZ RAM Underperforming

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 11:30 AM PDT

EDIT: Thanks everyone, was able to get to a stable boot on 3600 MHz after changing some timing and CL settings in BIOS, will be running memtest this evening to confirm stability but looks good so far!

Hey all, been trying to do some troubleshooting of my own for a few months now but haven't had any luck so figured I'd ask around here. I just built a new rig back in November and have 4x8 TridentZ 3600 rated RAM, but unfortunately it's being capped to 2133. Running an ASUS ROG B550-F Strix board as well. I've attempted to adjust DOCP and speeds in BIOS but can't get a stable boot on anything past 2133MHz. Anyone have any potential solutions?

Learn from me and remember to change your RAM speed... oof

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 02:51 PM PDT

I'm doing a new build, my last build was in 2016.

Back in 2016 I bought 2x8gb of DDR4 3200mhz RAM. Pretty good for 2016, huh? I remember searching for a bit to find a good set on sale. I was proud of myself. I think I paid a small premium to get the 3200mhz speed.

Just now, today, after five years of using this computer, I learned that I actually had to manually change my RAM speed to get the listed 3200mhz speed.

It was running at 2133mhz for 5 years.

    Big oof.

The worst part? Today is also the day that I am doing my new build, making this current computer obsolete. It finally got 3200mhz on the day it became relegated to backup computer status.

Lesson learned: not all components operate at advertised speeds without a minute worth of setup in the BIOS.

    Is a B550 MOBO overkill?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 03:43 PM PDT

Recently ran into some issues with my motherboard, and am going to have to purchase a new one. An x570 board isn't ideal for me, so I'm between a b450 and b550. The rest of my build is a Ryzen 7 3700x, Rx 580, 16GB DDR4 3200mhz RAM, and 700w EVGA BQ. Would a b550 mobo be overkill for this build?

    Bruh moment

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 11:57 AM PDT

Alright, my new 144hz monitor arrived today and I was so excited to open it up and turn it on just to find what I thought were around 10 or so dead pixels. This bummed me out, as the monitor I picked had very good reviews and normally doesn't have any problems. I blew on the screen to remove any dust, but they were still there. I honestly thought I needed to return it and buy a new one, until I tried one last thing. I got some tape and stuck it on the dead pixel spots, and to my complete and utter surprise, THEY ACTUALLY CAME OFF. So yes, that means I wasted my time over a few dust particles. Bruh.

    Power Supply Issues

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 03:45 PM PDT

Recently I was fortunate enough to snag a 3060ti from Best Buy in store. Its been a pretty awesome upgrade (from a 1060 6gb) and I want to take good care of the card. So it was a little disconcerting when I noticed that my PC's fan speed was noticeably reduced after putting it in the system. I was running on a 600w PSU, so enough to handle the load, though it was constantly maxed out and listed as the limiting PerfCap Reson in GPU-Z. So I bought a second hand EVGA supernova 850 G2. I got it all hooked up today, and upon first boot it seemed like the problem was solved, but quickly I noticed the fan speed was still low. So I looked at GPU-Z and found that nothing has changed. It still is maxing out and being the PerfCap. I thought something might be off, so I started adding up all the listed power draws and noticed that they all add up to just over 600w, not 850w. I don't know a ton about PSU's, so I've found myself a bit confounded. Any ideas on what may be wrong and how to fix it?

    Rest of setup:

    B550 Aorous Elite

    Ryzen 5 3600

    Seagate 2tb HDD +750gb HDD

    16gb RAM

3 system fans (Not including CPU cooler)

Can someone help me build a PC?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 04:38 PM PDT

My budget is $1300. Can someone please give me a list of parts from some good brands and their usual price range so I can get the parts and make a PC? It's okay if it goes a little over my budget. I just want to see the usual prices anyways. I would also be fine seeing good prebuilt PC's. I can probably go up to like $2000 if need be, but preferably not. I like to play games like COD, Valorant, and single player games. My graphics don't have to be super awesome, but good enough to look good on stream and for myself at home. I also will use the computer for editing, drawing, and running a couple of softwares at the same time while streaming.

Is it risky to switch pc cases?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 12:44 PM PDT

This is my first time owning a pc. I bought a prebuilt knowing that the cooling is bad. The asus rog strix i7-11700k rtx 3070 on bb for $1,600. I want to switch the case out, switch the cpu cooler and add case fans. It it difficult to do so? Or should I not even worry about it if it cools fine for me? Is it easy to mess up/ ruin the pc? What is the worst case scenario that can happen? Thank you for your time.

Having problems with my system. Have had it for a while without problems. Just reinstalled my Windows since I upgraded to a M.2 drive. Everything went smoothly until today. Previously had everything updated and all. Today, I launch a game of LoL and my fps is super unstable jumping from 400 to 60fps. Any app that is focused on shows Very High power usage in Task Manager.

Have tried removing overclock from CPU, RAM, changing power plans. Nothing works.

    Any ideas?

GPU advice on Gaming PC using 55” 4K TV as Monitor.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 03:56 PM PDT

Anyone have advice on what kind of GPU's would be good using a 4K TV as a monitor. I'm trying to find something that performs well on the system side of things but isn't overkill since I'll be using a TV as a monitor. I'm not expecting any kind of crazy refresh rates like with a good computer monitor as I play simulation games like Cities Skylines and Planet Coaster on computer then have my Series X for shooters etc. I would honestly be fine playing these games in 1440p or even 1080p as long as they performed well in other regards on the system. My build is already pretty costly and I really need some help on the GPU part. Any advice or insight is much appreciated! Thanks everyone

Edit: I'm trying to keep price range used around $500-$600

How do I pick a good motherboard to use?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 03:47 PM PDT

Hey back again with a dumb question

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 03:44 PM PDT

I was looking into cpu/gpu bottlenecks for a planned upgrade to my graphics card in a couple months and was curious as to what cpu I should pair with a 3080/ti, when I looked it up I was recommended to get a ryzen 9 5950x but when I fed it into the bottleneck calculator it looked like the gpu would bottleneck the cpu but my current processor ryzen 5 3600x seems to look good for it, being kind of stupid and lazy just wanted to get a couple opinions

After 8 years my Razer Mamba 2012 broke and I need a new gaming mouse

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 03:14 PM PDT

Hello. I am struggling finding a replacement for my mouse. I liked the design of Razer Mamba 2012, but I can no longer find anything like it.

I dislike having buttons under the mouse wheel, I don't find them comfortable, instead I liked the two buttons Razer Mamba 2012 had at the left edge of the "left click button".

I don't want too many buttons, I know I would press the wrong ones. Six buttons (eight at most) plus the mouse wheel would be fine for me. To me is also important having two "thumb buttons" on the left side.

I don't care about the mouse being wireless, I always had bad experiences with them (my current mouse included, that I ended up using with the cable all the time), but it is okay if it works wireless as long as I can connect it with a cable.

Razer Mamba 2012 was a bit too heavy for me, I would prefer a more light weight mouse, but it is not a priority.

    Do you have any suggestion?

    Thank you.

Is buying a prebuilt pc as bad as people say it is?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 07:25 AM PDT

(huge noob here) I've been saving up money to get a gaming pc but I'm not sure if I should buy a prebuilt or build it myself. I hardly know anything about computers, and because of the part shortage right now I'm leaning toward buying a prebuilt. I'm planning on using the computer for mainly Minecraft, streaming, video creation, and occasionally other random variety games. I want to be able to have my games run smoothly without lag. Does anyone have any advice or recommendations? My budget is about $1000. I would appreciate any help!

    Help me upgrade please!

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 02:54 PM PDT

Hello, im planning a long awaited upgrade, currently due to stocks and prices id be keeping my current GPU and possibly storage drives, unless they are really bad. I would appreciate any help and advice you can provide. The main use would be gaming and graphics software that uses mainly CPU and RAM performance.

    Current:

    CPU: Intel Core i7 4770

    RAM: 8,00GB Single-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz (11-11-11-28)

Motherboard: Gigabyte Technology Co. Ltd. Z87-HD3

GPU: 4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 (MSI gaming Z)

    Storage:

    111GB KINGSTON SV300S37A120G (SATA-2 (SSD))

    931GB Western Digital WDC WD10EZEX-08M2NA0 (SATA )

    223GB KINGSTON SHFS37A240G (SATA-3 (SSD))

Case: Some basic whatever case typical for prebuilds I guess

    Now for the planned stuff:

    Case: Phanteks P400A

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-B550 Aorus PRO V2

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600x

CPU cooler: Be quiet! Dark rock 4 BK021

    RAM: one of the following

    Crucial Ballistix 3600 MHz DDR4 DRAM Desktop Gaming Memory Kit 32GB (16GBx2) CL16 BL2K16G36C16U4B

    G.SKill Trident Z Neo 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3600 CL16

    G.SKill TridentZ RGB 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 4000 CL18

Later on I would be buying anything along the lines of RTX 3070 GPU as soon as the prices get somewhat decent.

I'm really not that knowledgable in this kind of stuff, tried doing some research but I'd be glad for any advice on what to consider or improve.

    Thanks!

EDIT: forgot to mention PSU, I know very little about how to choose apart from the actual power and efficiency. Found some kind of tier list: https://linustechtips.com/topic/1116640-psucultists-psu-tier-list/?__cf_chl_jschl_tk__=pmd_a81d63c9d4da60bc16fdf871b5bfdaca9e79200a-1627855478-0-gqNtZGzNAjijcnBszQiO but I'm not sure how good that list currently is.

Heard EVGA/Seasonic might be a good choice brand for the build quality?

    PC Upgrade for 400$

Current specs are: Gpu: gtx 1060 3gb (not gonna upgrade since I just got it from a friend for free) Cpu: fx 4300 (not over locked, also very old) Motherboard: MSI 760gma-p34 Ram: unknown 8x2 (16gb in total) ddr3 1333mhz ram A 1 terabyte hard drive Evga 450 watt power supply I want to mainly upgrade the cpu motherboard and the ram, but I'm scared if I pick parts by myself I'll mess something up. Could on of you guys help me out to pick some parts? My fx 4300 struggles to keep up with the gtx 1060 so in games I struggle to keep a steady frame rate and tend to spike from like 100 to 15 then back and forth. I can not decide which cpu is better for me

    Posted: 01 Aug 2021 02:17 PM PDT

Hi! I am a computer science student and also a game lover. I decided to build a new pc but i can't decide which cpu should i choose. Some of my friends say intel 10600k is better and some of them support ryzen 5 5600x. In my country intel 10600k is cheaper than amd ryzen 5 5600x. On the other hand their performance are nearly same (i say it because i watched some youtube videos to compare these cpus). So which one i should choose and what are the points i should be careful about?
