Got my CCNA, no IT work experience, what jobs should I be looking for? If any? Posted: 30 Aug 2021 09:10 PM PDT So early last year I left my job and went back to school. Attempting to start a career in IT and chose networking as my focus. Got my CCNA this spring and started applying to any job that didn't list IT experience as required. Nothing. Any ideas what jobs I should be going for? [link] [comments] |
Highly regarded security certificates in australia? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 03:52 AM PDT gday, been doing the googs to find out what is worth doing in Australia. It seems that Security+ has been highly reccomended in other countries as a great starting point, but I barely see any mention of it on Aus job ads. Any tips on where to start with sec certificates in Australia to get my monies worth? Currently working as a network/sys engineer. [link] [comments] |
Advice and suggestions needed for my current helpdesk role Posted: 31 Aug 2021 09:06 AM PDT Hello everyone, A little background info to help make a better conclusion. I am 21 years old and have been with the company now for two years originally an intern. I was brought on for a project and they kept me afterwards. I was going to school but seems like it's not for me and I learn better from actual practice and teaching myself at home. The company has actually never kept an intern as a full time employee before, until me. I have been here for 2 years and still get paid the same that I got paid when I was hired for part time 2 years ago. Mind you I'm still hourly (I presume pretty underpaid as well) and everyone else is salary. I have done quite a bit and also learned a ton since starting from teaching myself. I ask for harder tasks and get handed the same busy work as a reply. I recently made a couple scripts that save a ton of time and and even received a bonus for the script. I also have asked to be taught new things and yet to have received any training. On top of that I don't even have credentials for most helpdesk tickets, so I can't do them anyways. I am stuck with setting up computers and managing the project I made with the scripts and bored out of my mind. Some of my experience is dabbling in dos, python, js, web app pentesting and I've already started studying for my net+ and am pretty confident in about 50-60% of the material. I also recently have learned a lot about group policy and domains along with other windows features. Anyways here's what I'm asking… Just really looking for suggestions as to what kind of roles to apply for as well as am I overreacting in terms of progression? [link] [comments] |

In-office vs. telework: Things that cannot be done remotely Posted: 31 Aug 2021 08:25 AM PDT aside from things such as changing printer toners, replacing infrastructure hardware for on-premise, etc...with all the remote tools/vpn, what are other things that cannot be done remotely? Trying to figure out the best route to becoming an Information Security Analyst Posted: 31 Aug 2021 06:11 AM PDT Hello everyone! I have to begin by saying that I have very little experience dealing with computers and IT in general. I know how to operate one, but I wouldn't consider myself a computer whiz by any means. However, after doing some research, an Information Security Analyst seems to be the career that I would enjoy the most and would match up with how my brain works. I originally went to college for Exercise Science, wanting to go on to becoming a chiropractor, but since the pandemic, I've realized I don't want to do anything in the medical field. At the moment, I'm stuck trying to figure out what the best route would be in terms of education and landing a job. I've heard that you should aim for a bachelor's degree in Computer Science or an IT related field, but I've also heard that an online boot camp will adequately give you the skills needed to get a job. I've also thought about getting an associate's degree in Industrial Technology and then getting an entry level IT job to get some experience under my belt. Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you! Interview for security analyst positionz what questions were you asked? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 08:20 AM PDT I've been really lucky and have an interview for a security analyst position this week without any experience but just the A+ and some further studying I've done on security and networking etc. The interview is competency based and hoping to find out from anyone who has done a similar interview what types of questions you were asked? Weighing the options between Mainframe Technician or Helpdesk Support Posted: 31 Aug 2021 10:21 AM PDT Hey all, Just as the title indicates, I have offers in the role of a Mainframe technician or Helpdesk support. If this were a traditional data center technician role, I wouldn't be unsure of which route to go. I am looking to get experience in networking, server config, troubleshooting etc. I have years of LAN infrastructure and cabling experience, along with an AWS SAA cert. I am actually equally interested in eventually obtaining a network engineering role OR a sysadmin position as well. My only concern with the mainframe position is that it's less hands on and more coordinating tasks. So I am unsure how much relevant experience I would receive going forward. The helpdesk position would expose me to some AD, network troubleshooting, servers, employee devices etc., per description provided by the director. I eventually want to move to a cloud infrastructure role, so I would appreciate some input into which way would be more beneficial. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Coworkers keep joking about firing me. Should I find something else? Posted: 30 Aug 2021 10:08 PM PDT Should I be worried and start looking again? As I am writing this, I am making updates on my resume but I've only been working here for three months. I haven't completely grasped the job and my coworkers on shift have been a bit critical of me. They constantly make "You're Fired!" comments whenever they relieve me on shift. It feels like there are some underlying seriousness behind these jokes. I am never late and always try to learn their systems. My other four coworkers on shift with me are fairly new as well but they are not targeted by these jokes (They rarely do any work and accuse me of trying to backstab another shift coworker when I brought out a misunderstanding about our schedule and manning without her present). Should I start looking again? It just feels like these people already have a negative impression of me that will never change.. [link] [comments] |
Continuing an IT career in the USA after gathering experience in Europe Posted: 31 Aug 2021 03:24 AM PDT I am currently gaining experience in help desk for a company in Europe and for personal reasons I would like to move to the USA next year. How easy is it to make a jump like this? Has anyone else here done anything similar? [link] [comments] |
How long did it take you to feel proficient in a help desk position Posted: 31 Aug 2021 05:23 AM PDT I just started a new role as a system admin, for an MSP. I have the comptia trifecta and ccna but i dont have any hands on knowledge. Im doing a mix of lvl 1 stuff but also learning about other levels i think. For those of you who have had a help desk role position before. How long did it take you to feel like you knew what you were doing enough so that you didnt need to have a lot of support. Posted: 31 Aug 2021 01:29 AM PDT I am registered for a platform called Percipio and there are so many courses related to cloud computing that I don't know which one to go for. Which certificates/courses/books would you personally recommend even if they're paid? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Aug 2021 08:27 PM PDT Hi, I'm new to this Reddit. Do you guys think a BS in CS/IT start to depreciate in value? I'm 19 and I'm just so uncertain about what step I want to take in my life. I've considered a career in IT(UX design or cloud or software engineering) but doing research and looking at job descriptions- it looks like the standards are already high now despite being sorta of a 'new' field. I'm already seeing articles about masters degrees being more accepted as the standard to getting a job in tech and in other industries. I feel like I'm already too late and by time I get a bachelors in cs the industry will already be over saturated and another big tech breakthrough will come along for people to scramble and try to learn. I don't know maybe I'm just over complicating this whole thing. [link] [comments] |
How easy is it for an SAP Consultant to get a visa sponsorship from a first world country? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 04:33 AM PDT 24 yo financial control guy here (with audit background). I got an okay job/career in which I make an okay amount of money in general. But man, my country sucks. You have to jump through certain hoops and have certain amounts of experience just to be considered for visa sponsorship for a job in an English speaking first world country (UK/Ireland/Malta/AU/CA). I'm mostly focused on EU but but welli anywhere is better than here. I know, I know every country has different regulations on immigration but I'm mostly talking about global job opportunities. Like, how likely am I to get visa sponsorship with x years of experience? How in demand is this position in a global scale? [link] [comments] |
What to expect from an interview for a Data Administration role? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 04:28 AM PDT I have a remote interview scheduled later this week for a Data Administration role, I was just wondering what type of questions they might ask? They also have a competency test using Excel, has anyone done anything similar? And what did it entail? Thanks in advanced for anyone able to give me any pointers or advice. [link] [comments] |
What is the ideal career path for someone interested in finance and blockchain technology? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 07:40 AM PDT Hi there. Received my Bachelor's a decade ago in an unrelated field (Humanities.) Now I'm 30 and wanting to break into IT. I've completed the Google IT cert and am studying for the A+. No experience in IT but I have some experience in finance and trading through my brokerage app (WeBull.) Pretty novice stuff but experience nonetheless. I started learning about blockchain technology over a year ago, before I knew I wanted to join the IT field, and now that I'm applying for entry level help desk jobs, I'm curious to know what y'all think would be the best path for someone who is interested in the finance sector and blockchain tech. Need help moving forward I think I got all the basics but what now Posted: 31 Aug 2021 07:15 AM PDT I have an AA in computer networking; Net+, Sec+ and Server+; secret clearance and I just hit the 1 year mark at the MSP I'm at. I love my current job its very slow paced and a very good learning environment. I went from knowing nothing to now able to do a verity of calls on my own. My question is what should I do now. My current pay is below market for the area; I was thinking for asking for a big raise over 3-4 dollars. Or I could start studying for a new cert (AWS or CCNA). Or I could just move on to another company. Please tell me your thoughts [link] [comments] |
I just want to hear you people's thoughts on this matter. Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:53 AM PDT I'm a 21 year old computer science student in India. It's my final year and several companies are visiting my college to hire students as interns. I swear to god I'm not making this up, this is real. Since the hiring process has gone online, students in my college are using unfair means in the tests. These people have made several whatsapp groups and telegram groups of around 250-300 people each and whenever any company visits us, students cheat in these tests via the groups and almost all get a perfect score. Next is just the interview process. So that's how these people are getting jobs. I on the other hand have restrained from doing that for the sole reason of guilt. I can already see that if I get hired like this, everyday of the job I'd feel like a thief and that I'm not capable of things in life. But the others are getting hired nonetheless. You won't believe, I've seen the dumbest people get hired at really luxurious pay packages. My only problem is the peer pressure. It's very stressful to see others get hired while I get left out because I'm not scoring perfect in the tests. I'd like to hear your thoughts. [link] [comments] |
How can I get a tech / IT job as a chemical engineer? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 06:45 AM PDT Hey everyone, I'm just looking for some direction and guidance to get into the tech industry. I graduated 2 years ago with a BS in chemical engineering. I've worked as a controls engineer since then. I am not enjoying my job and did not enjoy my last year and a half of school. My second year, I took a VBA and a Matlab course which I LOVED. Additionally, in my job now, I've been working on SQL scripts sometimes and I really love that. I want to pursue a career in tech because that's what I enjoy doing and it's interesting to me. I'm passionate about it. However, I really don't want to go back to school nor do I have the time with my job being almost 40% travel. How can I start a career in tech? I'm not too concerned with salary cuts as long as I can pull at least 70k in. What type of roles should I apply for? What types of companies hire chemical engineers? Further, is this even possible? Or would I have to go back to school? I'm planning on getting my CompTIA and maybe taking a few courses on salesforce but what else can I do to really stand out without having experience? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Do I need certifications to start my career in IT(Helpdesk or relevant)? Posted: 31 Aug 2021 06:33 AM PDT I am studying Management Information Systems. Final year student. I have experience with building PCs. Know my hardware. Used Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. Do I need CompTIA A+ for a Helpdesk or an entry level role? I know programming as well but it's probably not important for such roles. If I need certifications, what should I get apart from A+? [link] [comments] |
Is an IS degree very similar to an MIS degree? (Specifically on the math) Posted: 31 Aug 2021 12:23 AM PDT I know they do have some similarities because they're in the same field but are there any major differences between them? Is one better than the other? I'm not huge on math so I'm scared of getting into IS. [link] [comments] |
