Simple Questions Thread - Week of July 11th, 2021

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 07:13 PM PDT

Welcome to the Simple Questions thread, for questions that don't need their own thread. We still recommend you use the search, FAQ/Wiki on the sidebar, or even a Bing search before asking. Also please post general tech support related questions on /r/techsupport. Be sure to check out our new help subreddit, /r/WindowsHelp

Some examples of questions to ask:

    • Is this super cheap Windows key legitimate? (probably not)

    • How can I install Windows 11?

    • Can you recommend a program to play music?

    • How do I get back to the old Sound Control Panel?

Sorting by New is recommend and is the default.

I am not a bot, this was not posted automatically.

My laptop is basically unusable during Windows 10 updates, which take forever to download and install...

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 10:22 PM PDT

... and these updates happen so frequently, I can't use my computer 25% of the time. Don't get me wrong, I like Windows. But these updates are killing me. Not only are they forced and take hours, I'm not even notified when they are happening. I just notice my computer suddenly can't do the simplest things. My first reaction is to "Check For Updates," and 90% of the time, I'm x% into an update that will take another two hours.

I don't want to sound whiny. It's just that I use my computer for school, work, and my digital art. These updates are ridiculous.

Virtual display on headless Windows Server?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 10:16 PM PDT

    Hi!

I use a headless Windows Server through Windows RDP.

I am also trying to make a screenshare application using Websockets that will share my Windows Server screen to people who connect to my socket server.

Yesterday, i observed that the screenshare turns to pitch black whenever i disconnect RDP.

Now, the websocket clients are still connected, just that they cannot see anything on the screen.

Also, i'm planning to use this screenshare application to use and control the server instead of RDP in the future, and i think this might be a problem.

How do i get around it?

More importantly, why does this happen? does RDP have some virtual display drivers that can emulate a display?

Curious about user settings with separate windows accounts on the same machine.

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 11:12 AM PDT

So I recently let someone borrow one of my laptops running windows 10. I created their own windows account on the laptop separate from my admin account. It does not have admin privs or anything just a standard user account.

I have chrome installed on that specific laptop and I'm signed I to it on my account. If the other user signs into their account, and boots chrome, will it be signed into my chrome account? Like will it auto sign-in to all of my accounts like it does when I'm using it on my windows account?

Windows 11 and the chains of backward compatibility.

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 12:14 PM PDT

Seeing the new Windows 11 release has actually changed my position on where I thought windows was going as whole. I'm beginning to feel that the need to bring across pieces of the legacy software is hindering what windows could be. It could be so much more.

Imagine a version of windows that was completely recoded from the ground up with modern programming standards (yes all the new stuff does this, but there is a literal ton of legacy code still active within windows). I personally think C++ is still a solid language for this, but maybe you feel differently?

I don't want two versions of windows, but I do wonder what would happen if they did keep the more legacy stuff for the business (pro versions?) side of things and began pushing the consumer side of things to a more streamlined version.

Am I nuts? Do I just not understand what is happening here?

Why Intel Celeron is eligible for Windows 11?

    Posted: 11 Jul 2021 11:47 AM PDT

I tried Win 11 eligiblity test for my friend's laptop (Intel Aspire 3 with Intel Celeron N4000 to be specific) by using "PC Health Check" from Microsoft and "WhyNotWin11" from github.

Shockingly, it is eligible for the future Win 11 update!! I was so confused... isn't Microsoft says that only 8th Gen and above are eligible for the update?

    How did this happens?
