Looking for an everyday laptop for digital art + casual gaming (<$1200-1500 USD)

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 09:45 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
i'd prefer not to go over $1200 but if there's any laptop that goes over by a little i don't mind. the hard cutoff is $1500 though
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      prefer new but sure !
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
performance + battery life (but i can sacrifice battery life since i'm going to be using it by an outlet)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      not important
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      n/a
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
clip studio art and some mirroring program to use with my ipad, also would like to run old ds/wii emulators with little to no lag
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
i will mostly play indie games but some more intense/demanding games would be genshin impact, mass effect legendary, dragon age inquisition (old game but i still want to run on its highest/ultra settings), kingdom hearts series/pc port, minecraft w shaders, and yakuza series ?
i'd like to play them on its high/highest settings (45-60 fps) !
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      nothing in particular
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
i'm just looking for a laptop to eventually replace my 4 y/o macbook air that i use every day (& since i can't even game on it). i'm not in any kind of rush though. ideally, i'd build a pc instead of buying a laptop but my place isn't the best for a pc setup.

    thank you!!

Which is the highest performance and power from these?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 01:12 AM PDT

Which one of the 3 options is better based only on speed, performance and power of the computer? Not looking at price which of these 3 would have best speed, performance and power for most average tech users who surf the web, run multiple apps/tabs, do light video/photo editing, watch videos/movies? In terms of raw power which of the 3 below would handle a large variety of different usages and tasks you use the laptop for (office, light gamming, software development, watching movies, video, light photo/video edit)?

Which would be the best all rounder then from these?

    (1) 2021 ASUS TUF Gaming F15 TUF506HE-DS74 (i7-11800H, 32GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD, RTX 3050Ti 4GB, 15.6" FHD 144Hz, Windows 10) Gaming Notebook - Eclipse Gray

Durable student laptop for long-term use, Australia

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 12:02 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

1500AUD, (~$1100USD), I'll be buying in Australia but I'm happy to have it shipped too

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, but it has to be durable, and last a couple of years

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Not fussed with form factor, but build quality is important as I'm a student and would like the laptop to last around 5 years, without having to treat it too delicately. I'm fine with lugging a charger around 24/7, but preferably it can last 6+ hours on its own.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important, would gladly trade either for durability

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Preferably 14" or below, but not a requirement

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Blender

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    n/a

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Don't care about touch-screen/fingerprint scanners, but it must be able to run Windows.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My budget isn't solid! What's most important to me is that it's reliable and won't break down after dropping it (lightly) a couple of times, and that it's not an Apple. I just don't want to be paying a premium for features like touchscreen when I won't use them.

Best 2 in 1 laptop for university - Canada

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 03:43 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
I dont really know laptop prices like that but preferably below the $800 (CAD) mark but if something is worth the price I'd pay more for it.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Hoping to get something refurbished or used to save money and hit the $800 mark.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      1) 2-in-1 is a must. 2) Performance and build quality are very important. 3) Good battery life would be nice.
    • How important are weight and thinness to you?
Important, im going to be carrying it around campus.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I haven't dealt with different laptops sizes as I haven't used laptops that much, im thinking 13 or 15 would be good for a university student?
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
In terms of gaming, nothing specifically, would like to be able to do light gaming if I wanted to. I will however use a bunch of school-run programs and other software such as excel... etc.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
No clue really, just the ability to run light games like csgo, gta5 would be nice but doesn't matter too much.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I'm looking for a keyboard that feels good but is also somewhat quiet as I dont want to disturb others when I take notes. A good SSD as I want the system to boot up fast. 2-in-1 is a must so a screen that is good with stylists and writing is necessary. Good input devices as I will definitely hook up a monitor, keyboard and mouse when I'm in my dorm.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Im just looking for a nice and fast 2-in-1 laptop to get me through university. It's going to be my main work and entertainment station (doing assignments, online tests, studying - watching movies/shows, playing video games).

Work is letting me choose between a new Surface Pro 7 and a Surface Laptop 3. Which should I choose?

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 08:53 AM PDT

I've heard bad things about the Surface Laptop 3, but a lot of the complaints seemed to be around price. Since work is getting it for me, price is irrelevant.

I don't need the tablet functionality of the Surface Pro 7, and the laptop has a bigger screen. I've also heard the laptop has overheating issues. I really haven't been able to find much information on the laptop, so it's tough to know which I should choose.

    ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14: AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS, 16 GB DDR4, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, (CAD $1900).

Suggest me a laptop for programming and college

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 03:25 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
60 000 INR, purchasing in India.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes, but not a very old model.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      (1) Battery life (at least 7-8 hours of moderate use, watching videos, taking notes etc) is important. (2) A stylus-based touch screen would be nice, but not important. (3) Prefer good build-quality
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not very important, as long as it fits in a typical bagpack (or I can easily find a compatible one).
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Somewhat small, 13-14 inches would be good.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No gaming, but expect light video editing. It should be able to run: Android Studio, Visual Studio, and SolidWorks. Need Windows 11 compatibility. I need to be able to dual-boot into a Linux distro.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
No gaming at all—not even something ancient like PacMan. No need of a discrete GPU.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Backlit keyboard, preferably with a num-pad; and a Windows Precision trackpad. Having at least 1 USB A and 1 USB C ports is important; a 3.5 mm audio jack is important; an Ethernet port and some kind of video out (HDMI/DisplayPort) would be nice-to-have. Must have a web-cam (at least 720p 30Hz); microphone and speakers built-in (quality doesn't matter). Don't need an optical drive; an SD card reader would be a nice-to-have but not important.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I would like at least: a quad-core CPU that can turbo upto 3 GHz on all cores, preferably Intel; 12-16 GB RAM; good storage (would ideally like two separate drives, a smaller 128 GB or so SSD for the OSes, and 512 GB hard drive; 1 TB hard-drive is an okay alternative). I've been looking at ThinkPads, but not narrowed down a model; open to other suggestions.

Looking for good quality laptop for photo editing and streaming use in the UK

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      £ 500 (UK)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Possibly for right PC
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance is most important so it can handle multiple programs and tabs at one time. Also using for photo editing so needs the storage / RAM to handle this. Battery life - preferably at least 8 hours.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
The lighter the better but would compromise for a good spec
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      17"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Reliable and well made. Touch screen would be an added bonus. Preferably a disc drive. Good speakers too for music and film streaming

    Battery Life

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 11:01 PM PDT

    Hi!

I'm looking for a laptop with a long battery life (preferably more than 10 hours) which could withstand a day's worth of typing without having to plug it in. I'm leaning in towards a MacBook Pro since reviews said you could get around 16-20 hours off of it (10-12 if one uses Zoom or Discord). Assuming there is no budget limit, what laptop(s) do you recommend?

Thank you so much in advance!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    1 being the highest, and 4 being the lowest: 1 - battery life 2 - performance 3 - build quality 4 - form factor

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Doesn't really matter

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Screen resolution should be at least 1024 x 768.

Looking for a laptop around with outstanding battery life for £500 in the UK

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 02:21 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      £500
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Absolutely
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life comes first, this thing needs to last around 8 hours at least so I can work all day without having to charge. Fast charging would be nice but isn't required. Performance wise I am going to be using it for taking notes and some light programming. Some of that programming will be using OpenGL but integrated graphics will probably handle those projects just fine. It should be durable enough to survive being dropped a couple of times.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I would like something lightweight so I can carry it around easily.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
13" or maybe 14" at a stretch. I want something compact which doesn't take up loads of space in my bag.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      N/A
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I would like a fingerprint reader but the most important thing is that the keyboard and touchpad feel good to use as I will be working on this machine a lot.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Just reiterating the battery life thing, that's definitely one of the most important things for me. I'm not too worried about a good screen. As long as I can see the screen while inside it'll be fine.

Looking for a relatively thin and light gaming laptop for heavy gaming and school work. My budget is 4000 to 5000 CAD.

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 02:09 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      4000 to 5000 CAD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Since I'm expecting to have a beefy computer in a relatively thin chassis, I realize that the battery life might not be too good, but still, I'm hoping for the best possible. It would be awesome if the form factor could be an ultrabook and still pack a good punch, but if not, I would like for it to be as thin, light, and discrete as possible. As I said earlier, I'm expecting the laptop to be quite powerful.
    • How important are weight and thinness to you?
As I said in the previous question, weight and thinness are very important to me.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I'm going to use Adobe Photoshop, Premiere and After Effects when it comes to programs, though I'm not a power user in that regard.

When it comes to games, in addition to LoL, Minecraft, etc., I also want to be able to play any
AAA title at very high settings (SotTR, Cyberpunk, Doom Eternal, etc.)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I stated the games I want to play earlier. I would prefer upwards of 200 FPS in lighter titles like Minecraft, LoL and Fortnite, but a steady 60 FPS in AAA games in max settings.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Given my budget, I firmly believe that the build quality would be pretty good so it should go without saying.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
    • I feel like I've said all that is necessary. Sorry for spelling mistakes and/or grammatical errors since English is not my first language.

500GB more SSD or WIFI 6?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2021 01:11 AM PDT

    Hey everyone :)

I am currently deciding between two notebooks which seem to be the top contestants in the below 700€ (830USD) German market for 14" devices.

They mostly have the same stats. Here are the differences which I want you to weigh in on:

    • HP
      • 1 TB SSD
      • WIFI 5
    • Lenovo
      • 500 GB SSD
      • WIFI 6

I wonder what you deem to be more important. I am currently tending towards the Lenovo as I believe that I will be fine with 500 GB SSD and my 1 TB Onedrive account as I won't have games or movies on the device but mainly office-related stuff. However, I have read that it might be possible to change the network card towards one which supports WIFI 6 on the HP, but I have never done this before.

Please find below the links to the offers. Maybe you find some other stat differences that you deem worth considering. Unfortunately, you can't change the language of the page from German to English but Googles' page translation should do the trick if need be. The naming of the parts should be universal anyway.

Long-lasting gaming laptop for casual gamer: <$1500

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 12:40 PM PDT

    Hi folks,

I am finally upgrading from my nearly unusable 10 yr old gaming laptop, and am not savvy at all about what I need. I don't play very resource intensive games, but I do want something with nice enough specs that it will smoothly run games to come out over coming yrs. This is my last big, indulgent purchase before my second kid is born, so I don't want to screw it up! Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    · Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

<$1500 USD: I have a few months to wait and watch for deals or refurbs, so the budget is a bit flexible assuming it's something I may eventually find used or on sale.

    · Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yep

    · How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I definitely want something reliable/quality. Battery life is relevant, but I will be using around the house near power source most of time, so not a deal breaker.

    · How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not particularly. I currently have a 17in that is over 1in thick , and I've tolerated hauling it around with me so far.

    · Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15 in or larger

    · Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Primarily gaming, streaming, general office work

    · If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    Games:

    o Civ 6

    o Cities: Skylines

    o Sims 4

    o Fallout4

    o Skyrim

Most of the games I play don't need a crazy frame rate to be enjoyable. It don't even know what FPS I'm operating at on my old POS. As long as it's not a laggy mess I'm happy.

    · Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Nope

    · Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I know I don't need the top-of-the-line, cutting edge, hardware to run the games I like, but I'd rather buy more than I need if will get me a few more years out of a laptop. I just don't have the computer knowledge to judge where that line is.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    3500 lei, Romania

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I am becoming a CS student next year, so performance is the most important, then good battery life >6 hours, build quality, form factor.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

The weight is very important, i want it to be portable and have maximum 2-2,5kg; The thinness doesn't really matter, but if it's too thin i think it will heat more.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      minimum 14 inch

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      Coding on Visual Studio Code, i will multitask a lot also, if i can do some video editing will be nice but it's not important;

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      No gaming

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

The processor is important to me, i want my laptop to be fast, I also want a solid and good keyboard, minimum 256 GB SSD, 8 GB RAM with the possibility to add more if i want to, minimum 4 cores, good wifi; the webcam has to be HD (VGA is a deal breaker for me), minimum 3,5 max frequency and resolution 1920 x 1080 or something like that .

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The two options that I have are dell latitude 5400 and lenovo thinkpad e15 gen 2, but any other option or suggestion is more than welcome. Also, please tell me what bad things you hear or read about them.

I needed to fill the form bcs of the policy so you can ignore it, i just want to know what bad things you know about these two laptops.

    CAD capable but affordable

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 11:44 PM PDT

    Hello together!

I'm currently making my master degree in architecture in germany and since i started to study always worked from home at my tower. A few weeks ago my brother offered me to use his old laptop (hp pavilion dv6) when i travel and want to work.

His laptop is about 10 years old and starting to get senility. - some keys don't work, somehow the harddrive ist constantly on 100% workload, since I installed Win10 and the battery pack doesn't work at all. So I looked up, how much it would cost to atleast fix those 3 issues (ssd, new keyboard + battery) and it would be about 100€ and im still not quite sure if it would be fun to work on it(bc its fking heavey xD). So i thought of just buying a new laptop for about 500€ but im totally lost what makes sense, so i hope you guys could help me.

I primary just want to draw 2D like floorplans and sections (in vectorworks), do some light photoshop and maybe look at something in 3d from time to time. - No need to render in high quality, because i still got my tower. As mentioned before, I would like to pay less than 500€ (about 600$).

thanks in advance! have a nice week!

    Laptop for student/light gaming (USA-$600)

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 09:46 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Total budget for laptop and any upgrades is $600 USD, possibly $650 USD. Country of purchase is USA.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Possibly but I would prefer new. I would say I would rather go with a refurb rather than used though.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance -> battery life -> build quality -> form factor (performance is the biggest priority).

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight is is pretty important as I will be taking it everywhere so preferably under 6lbs. More is ok but undesirable. Thinness isn't too important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Has to be able to run MGSV Phantom Pain at a steady 30fps or greater on at low graphic settings. (More fps is preferred). Other than that just bring able to run multiple tabs of Crome at once and also word/PowerPoint.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

As mentioned above, MGSV at +30fps on low. Also, Minecraft at +60fps with lowest settings.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Touch screen would be nice but due to the cost of them, not really needed. Needs a USB 3.0/normal USB port.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Currently I am thinking about getting the Acer Aspire 5 A515-46-R14K and upgrading the ram and nvme ssd. It has 4gs of ram that's on the mother board so I can only get up to 8gs in dual channel and the rest would be in single. It's cpu is amd Ryzen 3350u and the gpu is amd Radeon vega 6 graphics. I am willing to wait a few months to get a good deal. I would like this laptop to last me around 5 years or more.

Need a laptop with 4800H and 2060 with 144Hz display at around $1000. (I am okay with refurbished and open box laptops too)

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 05:30 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $1000
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yup, as long as they work without any issues, I am okay with them.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Performance and Battery life are equally important, I did a bit of research and found 4800h+2060, the apt combo. Ryzen CPUs tend to have better battery life in my understanding.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Nah, idc about weight or thickness
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      15.6", 1080p 144Hz color accurate display.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Davinci Resolve, AAA gaming at High settings.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Newer AAA games like AC: Valhalla, RDR2, Cyberpunk at 1080p high settings with DLSS if available. Performance target is anything above 30fps for AAA games. And e-sports games like Valorant, CSGO and R6: Siege at 144+ fps
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Just fingerprint scanner and preferably windows hello.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
It would be great if the laptop has a Mux switch, since it would be a nice boost to e-sports games and CPU intensive games.

From my research, Lenovo Legion 5 seems to be the only laptop matching all my requirements, but the 2020 models are no where to be found, it would be great if I can find them at $1000 price range.

Asus Tuf15 seems to be a great option too, but every review I saw mentioned it had not-so-good thermals, I live in a humid environment so thermals are important.

HP Open 15 looks great too, but I don't think I can get it for $1000.

College girl from the US looking for a hot 'top (<$1500). Into light gaming, Adobe/art programs, and long walks on the beach.

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 09:24 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1500, preferably less than that though!
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Not at the moment.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I think performance and battery are important, build quality is important too, and I don't care too much about form factor but would prefer a more traditional laptop as I will be using it for school.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Important! I need it to be portable, which is what deterred me from the HP Omen!
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Interested in Adobe apps and some art programs like krita. I use SPSS and handle some large files, as well.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I mainly play things like the sims and doubt I will be a hardcore gamer any time soon but might dabble in some other free games.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I would like to start Twitch streaming and would like a laptop that could handle streaming games and have a webcam and good mic.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      Vaccinated 'tops only, please.

Engineering student, light gaming and general school work

    Posted: 28 Jul 2021 09:07 PM PDT

I was looking at the 2020 XPS 15 given there is a 25% off clearance sale, but after further reading it doesn't seem to be a viable choice.

I'm doing engineering, so I'll need something capable of rendering 3D models fairly decently. I really liked the thunderbolt ports on the XPS15 which allowed for an easy way to plug the laptop in and almost transfer it to a desktop setup with a monitor, mouse and keyboards

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    · Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $3000NZD - Auckland, New Zealand

    · Are you open to refurbs/used?

Not first preference, though am open to suggestions.

    · How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Quite important when purchasing for this price, all similar to the XPS 15 in terms of build quality, battery life and performance minus the thermal throttling.

    · How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight and thinness aren't massive, but again the design of the XPS15 was really nice and something similar to that would be great.

    · Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15in

    · Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming, just games like Valorant, Rocket League and potentially Tarkov (though this isn't really realistic without a gaming laptop, so no issues).

Also needs to be capable of rendering 3D models, potential light photoshop and video editing, general applications like word and excel, also some programming.

    · If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    At least 50-60fps.

    · Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A nice keyboard and decent size touchpad, sturdy build. The bezels on the XPS 15 are also really nice.

Solid cooling is also quite important.

    · Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The ability to use the laptop in both a desktop and laptop setting is quite important, just solid performance and a sturdy build.
