How do mesh systems avoid wireless bottlenecks? Posted: 19 Jul 2021 07:22 AM PDT I purchased a 3-node Rockspace Mesh Wi-Fi system for my home, and it works fine. I have the main node physically plugged into my modem downstairs, one in a closet upstairs, and another one in my room upstairs. The one in my room is also physically plugged into my desktop computer, which is much faster than using it wirelessly (My ISP is 100 down 5 up, but my desktop gets up to 120 down when plugged in as opposed to 40 down on Wi-Fi). I understand that wired connections are faster than wireless connections, but why is my wired desktop connection faster even though the node it is connected to is connected wirelessly to the other two nodes? It reminds me of the bluetooth waterhose from The Onion, but it works. [link] [comments] |
Disappointed with Ubiquiti AP performance, am I doing something wrong? Posted: 19 Jul 2021 06:25 PM PDT So I finally decided to get a separate AP instead of using my basic router/AP (802.11AC wave 1) and my performance has been worse than my old router/AP. I'm using a U6-LR AP updated to the latest firmware with a gigabit PoE injector. My only Wi-Fi 6 device is my phone so I tried connecting just that to the AP and comparing speed test and RSSI to multiple locations of the house. The speed is worse than the old router in most locations including right next to it. And I've had problems with the signal reaching as far as my old router. Currently the Wi-Fi is still enabled on the old router because I was going back and forth between AP's to compare speed and signal strength. The goal was to eventually disable it once the new AP worked better. [link] [comments] |

looking for recommendations for standalone buildings on a university campus Posted: 19 Jul 2021 08:26 PM PDT situation - two standalone, concrete-walled buildings on campus. They have an access point in the main building where their current (not sure of model, but it's older) router sits in one of the research offices. The buildings are roughly 15 feet apart. Their wifi signal and coverage is very bad in the 2nd building, and they experience frequent drops. They would like to improve this. Running a cable isn't an option due to the massive red tape involved with digging on the university land, and there's a lot more concrete in the way to boot. What would you recommend as the optimal solution and equipment? thank you [link] [comments] |

How do I safely access "management vLAN"? Posted: 19 Jul 2021 08:14 PM PDT Hi guys, struggling with the concept of securely/safely accessing the management vlan. I have an OPNSense box and a vlan capable switch. Lets say my management vlan is 100, and I configure 100 to have 1-way access to all my computers, wifi AP, iot devices etc. If I put my main PC on 100, and it gets a virus or whatever, can it infect everything? I was wondering perhaps I could plug a Raspberry Pi directly into my OPNSense box with a USB Ethernet, and only the device attached to USB Ethernet would be on VLAN 100? But then how could I access the Raspberry Pi? Only via direct access? E.g I'd have to get a screen/keyboard mouse and sit in front of the Pi to configure things? And what if I had an IOT device I wanted to upload code to? Would I have to send the code to the Pi somehow so I can upload to IOT device? I'm new to networking and would like to figure out how to make a secure vlan setup, but I still want it to be relatively easy to use if possible. How do you guys approach this? [link] [comments] |
Problems with no connecting to things such as games, websites etc. while internet is “fine”. Posted: 19 Jul 2021 08:06 PM PDT Hello! So I've had this for about two months or so and I'm getting so tired of it. Everytime I connect to our group call on Discord I get RTC Connecting (region doesn't matter, happens with servers as well). It lasts for about 5 minutes or so before FINALLY letting me talk. I don't need to change anything for it to fix itself, it just does. Similar thing also happens with a couple of games. I play League of Legends and Genshin Impact. Whenever I get into loading screen in LoL, every other game it'll give me a network error and I need to wait for the game to start to finally get in. In Genshin Impact, I need to keep restarting till I can logon due to "connection timeout". My internet works fine otherwise. No lag or anything like that. I've also had the same internet for over a year now and this only started two months ago. Does anyone know what's going on? I've checked online countless of times but I'm running out of options. It's seriously annoying and sometimes stops me at crucial times. Unique situation described here. I'm in voice channel in Discord. I try to screenshare but the screenshare is permanently loading. I can still talk and everything. The only way to fix the issue is leaving and rejoining but whenever I rejoin, I need to wait 5 minutes with RTC Connecting, sometimes more sometimes less. If this is happening while I'm playing a game for example, the game will still be running fine with no lag or packet loss. This only happens with connecting to things. I've tried looking everywhere and asking people but apparently no one has had a similar situation or has heard of it. I have a wired modem that only I use. Hopefully you guys know something. Thanks in advance! TLDR; I get connection timeouts, RTC connecting, network error etc. suddenly out of nowhere despite my internet supposedly working fine and being online. Once I'm connected, no issues are present. I use a wired modem, no one else uses it. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jul 2021 11:21 AM PDT I recently bought a house, which was built back to 2004. There are some pre-wired RJ45 keystones in all rooms. I see the lines are labeled as CAT 5e, but when I tested, 3 of the 6 cables can connect at 1000 Mbps, but the actual speed can only be up to 300 Mbps. The other 3 cables can only connect at 100 Mbps. Would this be normal for CAT 5e lines at that time. I'm thinking to replace some keystones to test if that is the cause or the cable is. Any advices? ---- Edited for my testing method: I used a macbook pro. If I connect the mbp to the gateway directly, it can get around 900 Mpbs with google speed test. If connect after the termination in the room, it can only go up to 300 Mbps, even though it said the connection was 1000 Mbps full duplex. [link] [comments] |
Only getting 100Mbps speeds on 400Mbps internet service Posted: 19 Jul 2021 08:03 PM PDT I currently have 400Mbps internet service from Spectrum. I plugged my computer directly to the modem and get 400Mbps but when i plug my computer into my home router I only get 100Mbps. The router would be the bottleneck, but the WAN port on the router is 1 gigabit and the WAN port on the modem is rated for 2.5 Gbps. I used the same ethernet cable for hooking up directly to modem and router. Could there be a auto speed negotiation trouble between the router and modem that's causing the slower speed? Any help is appreciated [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jul 2021 05:20 AM PDT I currently have FiOS gigabit speeds with my own router the Asus RT-AC88U. Speeds were great before until recently and this is through ethernet I used to get about 350 Mbps up and down but recently all my devices only get 90 Mbps up and down. Most normal downloads now take quite longer and is annoying. I've already done a factory reset on the router and it did not help. Should I just buy a new one? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jul 2021 09:50 AM PDT Currently I'm going with the 200MB plan. Once we get past the money we're spending on the house and our upcoming wedding, I plan to upgrade to a faster plan, so I want to buy something that will eventually support faster speeds. I just hired an electrician to install a jack in my office and our bedroom for a wired connection, and the house is already wired for FIOS (though the ONT box is ten+ years old, so I'm not sure if they will need to replace it or not). Ideally I want something with at least 4 ethernet ports out of the box, as I'm not interested in setting up anything fancier than that at this time. A quick google provided a bunch of different recommendations (example 1 & 2), but I'd rather hear from the folks in this community over a website that likely has paid incentives for their recommendations. For the television I saw a lot of recommendations for this MoCA adapter. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jul 2021 06:54 PM PDT So I got my own IPV6 /48 block direct from ARIN plus my ASN Number... I got vultr to announce my ipv6 block for me, so now I am coming to a dead stop in tracks how I can tunnel that ipv6 block back to my home to my pfsense router. Tried to figured out how to do it with google, but all I got was set up HE Tunnel Broker yada yada, not much help for me. Anyone got advice how I tuennel my IPV6 like HE, accept its from vultr back to my pfsense. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Why do i need different networks and also what do i need to do what i want? Posted: 19 Jul 2021 06:45 PM PDT I just bought a house and am willing to spend time to rewire and do things right. I believe my end goal is to have a cable line going to a single accessible area where the modem is. Then the modem feeds it's ethernet output into something that can split and send that signal to all my rooms via multiple ethernet cable into ethernet jacks in the wall. I would then use these jacks to hardwire various electronics including several mesh network routers to manage the wifi for the house. I don't understand why I need a router to handle multiple networks. Why can't I just take the output from the modem and split that to all my rooms with a switch? I am told I still need a router. I don't understand why. I also don't understand why I need multiple networks. What is considered a network? I'm sorry for the very basic questions. Any suggestions on the bare minimum setup I'm looking to build? [link] [comments] |

Huge speed/connection issues in one room in apartment Posted: 19 Jul 2021 06:31 PM PDT Hello everyone. We just got a new router for our apartment after trying out all different ones. We decided to get the Nighthawk AX11000 because there was connection issues in one of the rooms in the apartment, so getting the best router would hopefully solve it. There is an image gallery of me walking through the apartment, checking speeds as I go to the room. I'm thinking its the AC unit and the water heater in the hallway leading to the room that is causing the issue, but its pretty significant. We tried a mesh solution (Asus zenwifi ax mini), powerline (which was worse than the 2.4 signal the router gives off). We are out of ideas of what to do about this. Any help would be very appreciated. For reference, our internet plan is Xfinity 800mbps down, router is a Nighthawk RAX200 AX11000, modem is a Netgear cm700. When connected ethernet to the router, we get about 800-900 down, so the internet service isn't a problem. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 19 Jul 2021 06:17 PM PDT I am not sure if the issue is: * vpn * router * isp Recently, speeds drop off. ISP connection drops then returns. When it returns, the vpn speed is down 10 Mbps lower than usual. Or maybe 8. The time it takes to connect to a web page is so slow, I can't help but wonder if these speed tests are inaccurate. Everything was working okay a little while ago. I would like to eventually subscribe to a faster speed once I buy a (used) RT-AC86U but I can't get one yet. I have a smart TV and if I try a connection test, I will get a result of <1 mbps. Speed tests with my computer: avg. 20 mbps. I was getting 25 - 29 mbps before. Other speed tests often return 31 mbps (which I doubt). Later, it disconnects to the point it's unusable. Fortunately, that situation only lasts 5 min to 5 hrs. Not days. The speed tests seem pretty useless as a diagnosis tool. What else can be done? Router and modem both are unplugged and then restarted when this slowdown happens. Should I ask the ISP (tech division) to do anything? What can I do? (profile is 30/5). The next highest is 50 & 75. I don't want to upgrade until this issue is fixed and til I buy an RT-AC86U since the 66u B1 is only capable of about 30 mbps (stable). [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jul 2021 06:15 PM PDT Recently moved and trying to set up my location with a good network. Here are my goals:
Nice to haves (AKA I may do this down the line so if the initial set up can start me on the path that would be better):
Here is the equipment/wiring I have right now:
The CL router when placed in the living room covers pretty much the entire first floor. The office and living room share a wall and the rest is close enough. However there is barely a signal on the 2nd floor. Now for my actual questions: I am not sure how to get internet going to all the cat5e wall sockets. The CL tech suggested putting the router near the service cabinet. That way the incoming home run can go directly to the router and then the other cables can go into the built-in switch. However the service cabinet is too small to house the router (even if I took out all the unnecessary equipment in it) and I am afraid of ruining the cable ends that are going through the walls. Can I just put a switch there that will get the home run + the 4 cables going to the wall? Can the switch come before a modem/router? If the answer is yes that means easy wired connection for AP on each floor + the 1st floor office. If this first option doesn't pan out. Can I leverage the coax going everywhere to get a 3 or 4 way moca connection going? Most of the moca devices I see are sold in pairs, if I want a 3rd location do I need a 2nd pair for 4 devices or can I just add a 3rd and it will be able to talk to the other two? In that case I would still have the router in the living room and then use moca to send a wired line to both offices and also to the 2nd floor family room. Side note, can moca get 1gbps speeds or will I be sacrificing speed here? Regardless, I will probably need moca to get a wired connection to the second office. Last questions. Assuming I managed to get wired connections wherever I need them. How do I get a WiFi network that is just one SSID that lets devices switch to the strongest signal automatically (I've used extenders before but always find myself on the wrong network using the weaker signal because there is some overlap). Also, will I be able to incorporate the CL router (AP) or will I need to turn off its broadcasting and get those APs that come in pairs or threes? I want some equipment recommendations for:
Some more info. I think one radio in the middle of the 2nd floor will be able to cover it all, however I want to have a backup of adding another one in case it doesn't reach everywhere. If you've reached this far, thank you and I hope you'll be able to help! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jul 2021 06:10 AM PDT So I'm moving to rural Oklahoma, it was supposed to be some time next year but got pushed up. I was counting on Starlink being done before the move sadly it is not the case. The best options I can find is suddenlink and wind stream both speeds of 15/1. I have two questions besides Hughes or via, anyone know of any other options for high speed net? Second question would it be worth it getting both 15/1 options and dedicating one to work and one to normal home internet? note Starlink is the plan looking for options until that is available. Posted: 19 Jul 2021 06:03 PM PDT Hi, I am new to home networking. I just got a new router (Netgear AC1200) with the hope of extending my WiFi range throughout the house I am in, as the signal frequently disconnects on the far side of the house. I plugged in the router, not into the modem itself, because I thought that would not change the WiFi range from the modem. Instead, I plugged it into an Ethernet port on the far side of the house. I mean, it works, but the speed was not what I thought it would be. The router only outputs around 50mbps for devices on the far side, when the modem can put out nearly 300 mbps when nearby. The devices won't disconnect or anything like that, which is good, but the speed is far from what I expected from a Gigabit-rated router. Am I doing anything wrong here? Should I plug the router into the modem anyway? Or do I need to invest in a more expensive router, or a different device entirely, to get the results I am hoping for? [link] [comments] |
Fiddled with Home Network set-up, no iPhone keeps randomly asking for password Posted: 19 Jul 2021 05:24 PM PDT My original set-up was: Modem<-->Router<--->Switch<--->1 AP (Router in AP mode), various devices I added an IPS/IDS so now its Modem <-IPS/IDS<--->Router (set to AP mode but appearing as Bridge)<--switch-->1 Router in AP mode (but also appearing as Bridge) Internet seems to be working fine, but now when I roam the house I occasionally get asked for the wifi password again. Also the IPS/IDS says one of my APs has DHCP that is interrupting with it but I think its in AP mode so it would not be using DHCP. Is there anything I did wrong? I don't know why my APs are reporting as bridge. I have no idea how a bridge works and why it is working as a bridge and not AP. [link] [comments] |
RPi NAS 1080p video streaming on network? It’s lagging! Help! Posted: 19 Jul 2021 05:08 PM PDT Hi All! I have a Raspberry Pi 4 set up as a NAS. I run a Transmission client on it and a Plex server. I don't use SD card, instead I have a flash drive attached (to the USB 3 port) to it and the OS is running from the flash drive. There's also an external HDD where I store my movies. I think my router is good enough for high data transfer, I have an Asus RT-AC68U router, running Asus Merlin on it. The Pi is attached through LAN port, to maximize data transfer. There's a Fire Tv stick attached to my TV, with a Plex client on it. The WiFi signal is quite good, since the router is only a few feet away from the TV. I turned off the Transmission client while I tried to stream this movie, so that shouldn't be interfering the network. The problem is, some full HD movies are lagging and this way it's not enjoyable to watch movies. I really want to find out how to improve my system to make watching these videos enjoyable. This is just an example, information from a video I wanted to play today: Video Codec: x264, L4.1 Resolution: 1920x800 Bitrate: 13 000 Kbps Fps: 23.976 Audio Format: AC3 Bitrate: 448 Kbps Please help me. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Jul 2021 04:59 PM PDT I have an old combo cable modem / router, and it provides full speed to my wired devices. On Wi-Fi my phone ranges from 50 to 60 megabits, my tablet from 30 to 40, and my laptop from 30 to 40. This is with 150 megabit download service. [link] [comments] |
Network issues during LAN party Posted: 19 Jul 2021 12:56 PM PDT I need help troubleshooting a slow network experience my friends and I had at a LAN party I hosted. It was the first one I've hosted at my new house and current network setup, but I've hosted many in the past without issue. I have Comcast gigabit (1200 down/35 up) and the network was a pfSense router (HP t730 - quad-core, 8GB RAM, HP NC365T NIC) to 8 port switch to 16 port switch where the ~12 PCs were setup. Some people were using wifi. We had no issues if we were just playing locally, but any game with almost any number of people playing online resulted in lots of rubber banding or big freezes in game. We were even still having issues when it was just 3 of us left at the house playing with two randoms online against bots in Heroes of the Storm. Speedtests and downloads were fine. Is the 35 Mbps upload speed making this not possible? In the past that's never been an issue. We even had a LAN at a cabin last year with horrendous internet. Updating/downloading games was impossible, but we were able to play online without issue. My normal network config doesn't include that 8 port switch, but I had to swap that in to get the right number of ports. I thought maybe it was doing something bad, but that probably would have affected the local games too. I don't really know what to look for or how to recreate this unless I get people back over here. I want to figure it out before the next one obviously. Thanks for your ideas. [link] [comments] |
Recommendation for home router? Posted: 19 Jul 2021 12:53 PM PDT My internet is gigabyte fiber to the house. When it was installed, I went with the service provider supplied Eero router and an extender access point for the second floor. Prior to the fiber, I had a Netgear Nightwing that worked so-so (problems with updates and such), but it was able to reach everywhere I needed it to. I no longer have it. My situation: 1500 sq ft, 2 story house, the walls are lath and plaster and it has aluminum siding. I have a wireless laptop on the 1st floor, along with random mobile devices. I have a desktop, wireless, on the second floor (no cabling up there and no real way to get it there). I have cat 5 cabling to the TV streaming pc near the router. There is a back patio where we hang out with laptops. Beyond the patio is a parking spot for my car, that logs onto the network for charging instructions etc. I want to replace the Eero router. It's weird to administer and it doesn't reach to the patio very well and doesn't reach to the car at all. Any suggestions [link] [comments] |
