GL iNet Beryl - Won't automatically open hotel's captive portal Posted: 29 Jul 2021 05:47 PM PDT Hello, I geeked out and bought this travel router. I've tried using it in a few different hotels as a repeater with no luck. I never get asked to connect to the captive portal. I turned off DNS Rebinding Attack Protection, and still I don't get prompted with a captive portal. I've turned off wifi and rebooted the router, reconnected and it still never opens up the captive portal. Does anyone know what I need to do to be able to get into the captive portal? BTW I'm currently staying at an extended stay. They have ethernet but it doesn't work. :(. I cloned my iPhones MAC address since I was able to connect with it. No go. TIA [link] [comments] |
What router/firewall distro recommended in 2021? Posted: 29 Jul 2021 06:12 PM PDT Replacing an untangle router. Looking for dual wan, vpn, web filtering. Wasn't a fan of pfsense when I used it 8-10 years ago. Willing to pay small yearly "home" fee like untangle has but free is great too. Been looking strictly at intel solutions out of habit but have a raspberry pi 4 and I'm wondering if the little powerhouse that this thing is could compete with intel Or as arm has shown us on macintosh maybe blow intel out of the water. What arm router/firewall distos out there worth looking at ? What are my options worth my time? [link] [comments] |

Hello. Is it even worth upgrading from a night hawk mk63 mesh system to an orbi system. Posted: 29 Jul 2021 05:52 PM PDT I have 1 gig fiber optic and a 1700 sq fr single story home. I get almost 500-500 in my room (fromt corner) infront of the router with an iphone 8 plus (no wifi 6 devices). But the moment i step out and go to the middle of my house or the other corner i get 150/130. Is there a solution other than wired APS. I think i need a good wireless backhaul system but i am worried that my house may just be anti wifi built. I would like to see 500 /500 everywhere in my small home. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jul 2021 05:24 PM PDT I have a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 router that is about 5 years old (I think, can't remember for sure). Lately, I have had to reboot it nearly every day because my internet goes out. When the internet stops working, I can unplug the cord from the back of the router and plug it directly into my computer and it works but if I plug it back into the router I still don't have Wi-Fi. This lead me to conclude my router likely needs replace (it has the most updated firmware already.) I'm out of my depth comparing routers to one another. My router is in my living room and my home office/area where I game is about 25-30 feet away through 2 walls. I have been reading about mesh systems and just regular gaming routers and I'm not sure what I should get. I work from home a lot and use a lot of video conferencing when I do. I also broadcast online video games frequently. I'm basically choosing between 3 options: 1) Orbi Dual-Band Mesh Wifi System IT is $180 and says it is 1.2 Gbps but then the description says it is good for internet services up to 50 Mpbs. My internet is 200 Mpbs download and 100 upload (although it usually tests at 100/100). 2) Orbi Tri-Ban Mesh System It is $284 so more expensive than the first option but has a dedicated channel for the access points to communicate with each other. 3) ASUS AX6000 RT-AX88U It is $300 and is mesh capable if ever needed but I don't really want to spend more than $300 so it would be just the singular router. Which option would be best for my setup? Or is there something else you would recommend? [link] [comments] |
Enabling Ethernet ports through putty, unifi 500w 48 port switch. Posted: 29 Jul 2021 02:06 PM PDT So long story short, our apartment complex shut off all our Ethernet ports except for the one connecting to the unifi access point router, which each separate apartment has. We all have separate Ethernet ports in our rooms, which were disabled by IT. Each building, with 12 different apartments, has their own dedicated unifi PoE 500w 48 port switch that manages all the access points for the building. We would like to enable Ethernet ports for our Xboxs in our rooms, as the wifi isn't that good. We do not have access to the GUI, but the maintenance guy did give us physical access to the unifi switch for our building. Is it possible to re-enable the Ethernet ports through putty, using a physical Ethernet connection to the switch from our laptop, without logging into the GUI? [link] [comments] |
Need your help with picking a router Posted: 29 Jul 2021 07:55 PM PDT First of all, my insurance is paying for this (that's why it's outrageous!) this $1200 router system with go with my house is being done. The house is around 4500 sq ft with the 3 floors. I'm using cat6 cables and I have a computer that will be using the 2.5gb LAN and a bunch of smart home devices (around 35-40) Is this the router for me? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jul 2021 07:38 PM PDT Hi! I posted a week ago about wiring the house because we're getting unstable speeds using the Asus ZenWiFi XT8 mesh router (concrete walls). I successfully wired the house over the weekend. I ran out of cable so there's one security camera and an audio streaming device that I still need to wire. But I'm really happy with the results. I'm getting no packet loss pinging 8.8.8.8 from any of the wired computers. I used DSLreports tests and results showed bad bufferbloat. I turned Adaptive QoS on the Asus router put in 80% of our available bandwidth in the upload and download speeds and it improved the bufferbloat. But I'm still getting inconsistent results sometimes getting A+/A but also Cs and Fs on relatively low traffic while doing the tests. So I was wondering if adding a new router/firewall with a more robust QoS like the Edgerouter will give me a definite improvement. Or should I add another Asus router so the mesh system? (I'm not sure if calling it a mesh system is still technically correct since they have a wired backhaul, but maybe the nodes just talk to each other better?) I'm asking for your router/firewall recommendations. My budget is around $200. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jul 2021 07:09 PM PDT Hi Reddit, I pay for 800 mbps cable internet through Xfinity with their newest xFi gateway and have recorded through their app speeds of up to 940 mbps at the gateway itself. I am however only receiving anywhere from 25-100 mbps on my laptop and 50-120 on my Xbox One via WiFi. My iPhone has been all over the place from 70-450. All of this is regardless of location of the gateway and regardless of how close the devices are to the gateway. I have had an Xfinity tech out here who replaced some of the exterior cables and splitter and he got speeds up to 300-ish only for them to be back to the above hours later. I have troubleshooted with Xfinity online techs and got nowhere. I have swapped my gateway for a new one with the same results. I have shut off WiFi to all minor devices on my network such as cameras, doorbell, Echo devices, etc. and only received a boost of maybe 20 mbps or so. My house was built in 1995 and I doubt the walls are full of lead or uranium or any weird material that may be causing interference, and even then, with the gateway in the same room as my devices the speeds are the same. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas?? I don't know what else to try. Thanks in advance for any help. [link] [comments] |
VLAN, Load balancing and a network novice Posted: 29 Jul 2021 12:57 PM PDT I'm struggling to figure out how to configure the VLANs necessary for my home network. I need to direct an internet connection into load balancing router via a USW Flex switch. Router - USW Flex - USW Flex Mini - Load Balancing Router There is only cable connecting the USW Flex to the USW flex mini. This cable needs to also carry the load balanced internet connection to the rest of the network. So I figure I need a VLAN. In my head, I need to set up the port on the USW Flex to assign a VLAN to the signal coming from the MikroTik Router. Then the USW Flex Mini needs to have a port assigned to carry this VLAN signal to the load balancing router. The load balancing router receives this cable into a WAN port, along with another router via a second WAN port. This router sends the load balanced connection back via a LAN port to the USW Flex Mini The USW Flex mini sends this connection back to the USW Flex which distributes the connection to different access points. Does that sound right? If so, how the hell do I set it up?! Which router assigns the IPs of the network? How do I set that up? Anyway. Super confused so I came to reddit. Thank you internet. Posted: 29 Jul 2021 05:36 PM PDT Hello, I am having an interesting networking issue and am pulling my hair out to try and find a solution. The 5GHz channel on my router is having issues in specific conditions, and I am able to replicate it using my xbox. Essentially, the devices on our network work fine but as soon as I start connecting my xbox to our 5Ghz wifi, all devices on the 5GHz channel stop working. They stay connected to the wifi, but no pages can be loaded. It will stay this way until I manually disconnect my xbox from the network. Wired devices are unaffected during this issue. This seems to only happen with the xbox; connecting other devices to the 5GHz works fine and no devices are affected during this process. Interestingly, my xbox gives a DHCP error, however my router login page displays an IP address for the xbox. On the xbox, it says connected to the network but no internet connection. Any ideas? Moved into new apartment that uses a “Community Network” Posted: 29 Jul 2021 05:25 PM PDT I just got the keys to my new apartment that had "High Speed Internet" included. The isp is spectrum. There is only one network that you join and then log into from a web browser portal. Anyone have any ideas as to how I could set up my own network inside the apartment? Only piece of Internet equipment I can find is this white box mounted to the wall. Would post a picture but I don't think I'm allowed. [link] [comments] |
Do I need an amp or new modem (or both)? Posted: 29 Jul 2021 04:42 PM PDT Sorry in advance for the long post. I want to try and be as thorough as possible. So we have been having issues with our internet cutting in and out and the modem going through multiple power cycles on its own back to back like it can't secure a signal. Sometimes it resolves within a few minutes, sometimes it lasts for hours. We have Xfinity with the 1200 Mbs (?) plan. The cable comes from the street on the left side of the house, goes into a cylinder connector for the ground then to a 50' coax that goes around the back of the house. In the back of the house there is a two way splitter that goes up to the second story bedroom and another 50' cable around to the right side of the house. It comes through the wall and into a second two way splitter which goes to the main cable box and the modem. Modem is a Surfboard SB6141. We have had it for several years and were notified by Xfinity a while back that it was no longer supported but it still worked so we just kept using it. I'm aware it is no where near able to handle the speeds of our service. Most of what I have read leads me to be that the modem is at the end of its life. What makes me wonder though is whenever the modem starts having problems, the cable box says it can't reach the internet as well. The modem is not wired to the cable box in any way to provide it with internet and the cable box is not connected to the wifi either. We are not able to even pull up the guide, let alone the streaming apps through the box. Originally it was a single 100' cable from one side of the house to the other, into the splitter that goes to the modem and cable box. When we added the upstairs box, we cut the 100', added connectors to the ends and added the extra splitter. When the issues started I thought maybe it was bad connectors, so I switched it to two pre-made cables. That didn't fix it so I changed the first splitter. That didn't fix it, so I changed the the inside splitter. Still didn't fix it completely, but it has been a little more stable. TLDR: Older modem, losing signal and power cycling, cable box having internet issues too even though it is not connected to the modem or wifi. Replaced cables and splitters, still having issues. So, that's my issue. Thanks for reading if you made it this far. Any suggestions are appreciated. I know I need a new modem to take advantage of the service I am paying for, but I want to make sure that it will actually work. Won't do much good if I am still having signal issues. [Edit] Here are what I was able to get after logging into the modem. Downstream https://imgur.com/3cmTSu3.jpg Upstream https://imgur.com/kf8tkVM.jpg Signal Status (Codewords) https://imgur.com/dRJZnli.jpg Logs https://imgur.com/4H0OplZ.jpg The logs seem to be repeating after these ten, and it only logged the last 20 mins or so. Why am I still 200+ ping, even with an ethernet cable plugged in? Posted: 29 Jul 2021 03:51 PM PDT I recently plugged in an ethernet to my pc for a better connection, only to find out that my ping and download speed hasn't changed at all. My average ping is 250, download speed is 7.44mb/s, and upload speed is 709kb/s. What can I do? Is there something in my computer that'll allow me to increase my speeds? Or do I just have crappy internet? [link] [comments] |
How easy is it to cut the rj45 plug off a cat8 patch cable and replace it with a keystone? Posted: 29 Jul 2021 03:44 PM PDT I want to do a tricky fish with cat8.1 patch cable through the wall. I tend to damage plugs so I'm a bit concerned with having to cut-off a damaged end at some point and replace it with a keystone. Is there anything compatibility wise I need to worry about when buying cat8.1 cable or keystone jacks, or can I just replace a cat8.1 plug with a cat6 or cat6a keystone jack in the near future, or a cat8 keystone jack in the far future if at that point I need 25gbps or 40gbps [link] [comments] |
Would someone be willing to take a look at my modem stats and logs to see if something is wrong? Posted: 29 Jul 2021 02:36 PM PDT Issues to do with random devices on the network suddenly getting "connected, no internet" or equivalent message. Troubleshooted the hell out of everything and replaced router, still happening. Recently moved my cable modem into a different area of the house because the ISP said the signal was weak which could explain my troubles. Could someone take a look at the stats pages here and tell me if anything seems odd? Apologies for the camera pics instead of screenshots. How to change Channels on the Spectrum TV App? Posted: 29 Jul 2021 02:33 PM PDT I am trying to make my handicapped wife a better remote controller. Posted: 29 Jul 2021 10:19 AM PDT The coax (and soon, fiber) for my internet service come into my house through a concrete block unfinished basement wall. I currently have an ad-hoc setup with the wire extending into my living room and my cable modem, wifi router etc. just sitting in a piece of furniture, but I'm in the process of upgrading to a hardwired network with separate wireless access points and I want to build a proper "wiring closet." The only problem is that I don't really have a suitable closet upstairs in the main living area of the house, so I was thinking of mounting the equipment on the basement wall. I plan to have enough rackmount equipment to justify a 9-15U wall-mounted rack enclosure, but I've also got the cable modem and/or fiber ONT and a bunch of other non-rackmount stuff (HDHomeRun, ObiTalk, splitters and amplifiers for OTA TV, etc.) to deal with. Would it be tidiest/most professional to put that stuff:

Spectrum won't help fix my problem. Posted: 29 Jul 2021 01:32 PM PDT Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on what to do in this situation. I have Spectrum, and for the past 7-8 months it has been dropping connection for on average 30 seconds to a minute before coming back. It happens regardless of wireless or Ethernet connection, and happens on all of my devices. This occurs 10-15 times a day, and the only advice Spectrum gave me when they came to look at it, was to divide my devices between 2G and 5G, which I was already doing. Is this just my ISP being useless, or is there something that I can do to get a stable connection. I need a reliable connection for my online classes, and general happiness. Thank you guys. edit: 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz (not 2G and 5G) edit: Thank you guys for the help, going to call Spectrum repeatedly until they fix it. If not, I'll see if I can get my hands on a different modem. [link] [comments] |
