Any known FileZilla security issues? Kind of a crazy story… Posted: 12 Jul 2021 09:59 AM PDT I'll preface this by saying that I know just enough about networking, in general, to get myself in trouble. So I'm (generally) pretty careful (as in, I know that FTP is not the modern, secure way to transfer files…but usually good enough, given my limited application). So. I set up an FTP server for my nephew a few weeks ago, just to transfer a couple files outside email attachment limits. Then I left it open, maybe a month, just in case he needed to get back to it (also: sheer laziness). No anonymous logins allowed. Set him up a uname and password. Limited access to a single directory containing the files in question. Read-only. I had the FileZilla window opened up on a 2nd monitor most of that time. When poking around on the basement server box, I'd occasionally see some failed logins from China/Russia and the like. No biggy. Well one day, I just happened to be down there and noticed yet another attempt. I watched, real-time, as whoever/whatever began to spit a bunch of garbage characters. Fail. Fail. Fail (etc.). But THEN, sirs and madams, I watched as the same IP suddenly entered MY uname (which happens to be a rather unique nickname of mine) and, after a few attempts, MY password. This has never been shared with anyone. I formerly had it going to share files within the house. I shut the whole thing down right as they were going for a directory listing. Ports closed. Program shut down. No plans (nor need) to open it up again in the near future. Pretty frikkin unnerving, though. And damned intriguing. IP was from a city a couple states away. I checked the logs - this was their first and only attempt. You ever hear of such a thing? [link] [comments] |
Necessary to get the unifi switch with Dream Machine Pro or can I run a cheaper unmanaged switch? Posted: 12 Jul 2021 05:28 PM PDT Let me start by saying I'm a bit of a novice—no background in IT but I like to nerd out on home network stuff. At my first house, I setup a network, with cat6a dropped into all rooms, a switch and modem along with other smart hub devices centrally located in a media enclosure in the pantry, running a router in the middle of my house through the patch panel to the switch. Well, I just moved into a home my family plans to spend a lot longer in and I am thinking about upgrading the setup, since I have to essentially start all over. It's a much larger home as well, so I'm considering getting a Dream machine pro and a few access points. What I'm wondering is, that 24 port unifi POE switch is around $700. Is there any reason I couldn't just run a 24 port unmanaged non-poe switch and add a POE injector into the mix to support the access points and potentially a camera or two? OR, is the Dream machine pro overkill for what I'm trying to do and maybe a router and an extra access point would suffice? In that case, does anyone have any recos for Router / Access point combos? Buy RG6 or RG59 Coaxial Cable? Posted: 12 Jul 2021 07:53 PM PDT Buy RG6 or RG59 Coaxial Cable?Firstly, What is RG?Coaxial Cables use RG ratings to distinguish between different cable types.RG is an old, long-forgotten military term meaning "radio guide". The number distinguishes different cable specifications; but they are randomly assigned, so don't look for some sort of ordering in numbers. Really a lot of coaxial cables have been made over the years but the only thing most people have to worry about is RG6 Cable and RG59 Cable, so those are the two types we're going to focus on here. The RG6 Cable comes with bigger gauge and has thicker insulation and better shielding. The RG6 Cables are best for high bandwidth or high frequency applications such as Internet, Cable TV and Satellite TV signals. The RG59 Cable comes with a smaller conduction. It is also thinner and less shielded. It is only recommended in low bandwidth and low frequency applications such as CCTV System installations. The Siamese Coaxial Cable consists of RG59 Cable combined with a 2C Power Cable. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Jul 2021 10:01 AM PDT My Samsung TV was suddenly incapable of seeing my wireless router. So I call Samsung tech support to help figure out what's wrong. They went through some typical steps that were no help. The next step was to change the TV's DNS from auto to Google's 8.8.8.8. Im like who cares what the DNS is set to if TV cant even see the wireless router. They still stubbornly insisted I do it so I ablidged thinking I could throw a snarky 'I told you so' to them when it didnt. My tv instantly saw and reconnected to the wireless router after I did that. Still at a loss for words. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Jul 2021 03:31 AM PDT Hey, I've recently moved out of my parents place to my own 48 square meters place and currently use the router i got with my ISP which is fucking dreadful. I got a gigabit fiber internet (1000 down 100 up speed) and my setup is that its in my workroom with my pc hard wired and streaming wifi (not well at all) to bunch of other deviced, i feel like i get 20-30mb speed max at times; First of all my switch and my phone, not the greatest connection and i just end up just using data in my phone most of the time because the wifi signel is bad two rooms away in my bedroom. I also use a lot of streaming from my pc to my entertainment center in my living room with my Steam Link, and the other way around - i use my PS4 that is in the living room with remote play to play on my pc screen. Other than that im planning to get a chromecast in the future and i also have a ring doorbell that use 2.4hz wifi and had no issue with that, all the other devices do support wifi 5 and i think thats when its struggling. Side note: I do live in israel so i might not be able to find any kind of router you have access to in the state, or i would need to order one form overseas so multiple options will be appreciated. Thank you so much for your time and i apologies for my scuffy english Edit: after some more digging the router the isp gave me called sagemcom f@st 5657 [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Jul 2021 08:42 PM PDT Try not to break the bank here but I recently upgraded to Comcast blast Internet speed from 50 to 400. Spent the last 3 days ruling out stuff until just now I read that even though they advertise up to like 800 mb down the lan ports are cut off at 100. So how the hell would you even get those speeds? If I got a better deco to be paired with the other 2 w200 as a hub would that get the better speeds? [link] [comments] |
What device do I need to isolate 3 of my NAS? Posted: 12 Jul 2021 08:34 PM PDT Currently my router (Netgear RAX80) doesn't have a firewall rule capability to restrict traffic to only allow specific IPs to my NAS. The QNAP NAS I bought 2 months ago has suffered a ransomware attack just 1 week after I bought it (I didn't change any default settings by then). I have now disabled upnp on my router and tightened access to my QNAP by: Unfortunately, 2 of my NAS (Drobo 5N and WD My Book Live Duo) doesn't have that capability to restrict access for those specific IPs. Especially now that my WD My Book Live Duo is now being targeted Is there a device like a smart switch to set those firewall rules? Any device that you can recommend to do it? Preferably where I don't need to re-map all the desktop and laptops of those NAS Drives. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Jul 2021 08:23 PM PDT Looking for router recommendation. House: 2 story ~ 3500sqft with router in basement on shelf near ceiling (no option to move to first or second floor and would prefer standalone over mesh) Currently using an old Netgear n600 (wndr3400v3). WiFi occasionally drops, but get okay range throughout the house and on back patio. Was looking at the Asus ax88u and ax86u. It seems the ax86u is the go to right now for a standalone router, however the ax88u has better 2.4ghz and advertises double the range as the ax86u. But it is also around 100 dollars more. Any suggestions appreciated! Thanks [link] [comments] |
HELP !! USB-C to HDMI Adapter Glitching Out Posted: 12 Jul 2021 08:23 PM PDT Hello, I'm trying to connect my Laptop to my TV. I went out and bought a Surf Onn. Brand USB-C to HDMI Adapter for an HP 14" Chromebook Laptop with Chrome OS - AMD Processor - 4GB RAM Memory - 32GB Flash Storage (14-db0031nr) It fits perfectly into each port but the TV does not recognize it, yet it will still allow me to view the screen. The problem is that the feed is all glitched out and it won't project what my laptop sees. I have tried to disconnect it and reconnect, changed different HMDI ports, tried to use a different HDMI cord but it still looks the same. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. Thanks. Total noob with ipv6 and could use some help Posted: 12 Jul 2021 08:10 PM PDT I've done tonnes of googling and just can't seem to get the right keywords to find what I'm looking for, so here I am. I'm trying to home host some services and I just found out that my ISP only offers a public ipv6 address. I've home hosted in many locations before, but only ever with ipv4. Right now I'm having trouble getting anything on my local network to connect to my router with ipv6 exclusively even to test. That being said I have no idea if the public ipv6 address that shows up in my router's settings even works or if I need to enable the ports on the router. Does anybody have some advice/resources to get me started? Even a small push could help me out a ton. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Jul 2021 08:06 PM PDT Hey guys, I'm struggling to find the appropriate hardware for my makerspace setup where I need to separate staff & automation devices from guest/member devices. If this is the wrong place to post this, let me know. Our needs aren't so high (and limited budget) to require enterprise hardware. Just hoping to get a second opinion whether this is even the right way to approach this, or potentially recommendations for hardware. tl;dr: Should I try to find hardware that can separate networks with VLAN or can I do something like nested routers? Setup:
Here's a map of our ideal setup, assuming the Hitron could be setup with some firewall or security settings to protect the guest computers. Research:
Not having a clear understanding of the best way to map this has made it pretty difficult to choose hardware. At first I was ready to just grab some ubiquiti stuff for the VLAN features, but with such meager requirements I was wondering if one or two consumer routers would be adequate. Thoughts? How to increase wireless speeds? Posted: 12 Jul 2021 04:14 PM PDT Long story short I just downgraded from a 400 mbps internet to a 100 mainly due to both price and the fact that the 400 mbps was cutting out constantly because of the isp. I experienced 0 lag with the 400 but obviously now im on the 100 mbps wifi and getting some bad lag in games. I am only getting 30 mbps of the full 100 and desperately need ways to increase my speeds. My pc doesnt have a wireless adapter in it so im using a usb adapter for the wifi as the router is too far but am looking to see if I can go wired with some sort of bridge like a tp link n300 2t2r or something of the sort. Does anyone know if a product like that will help? Or if I can somehow increase the speeds another way? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Baffling internet connection problem that seems to only appear in some Zoom calls Posted: 12 Jul 2021 04:08 PM PDT We live in a simple two-bedroom apartment that's about 1100 sqft, and we have one of those Hitron modem-routers (802.11ac) in the middle of the apartment. Our internet speed is about 80 Mbps for download and 10 Mbps for upload. It worked fine for the first two months after we moved here. Since a couple of weeks ago, my partner has been experiencing latency and freezing issues when she does Zoom video meetings for work. It's mostly likely from her end because 1) she Zoomed with the same people all the time for the past two months with no issue and 2) Zoom now tells her that her internet connection isn't stable during calls. I'm no IT guy but I tried to narrow down what might be the issue by using elimination:
My preliminary conclusion so far is that it's not that our internet is too slow (it has been working for 2 months before), and it's not that her laptop isn't getting the wifi signals properly. For reference, she's about 8 meters / 26 ft away from the router with a few plaster walls and a 55" TV in between. The modem-router is also sitting on a metal filing cabinet. I personally don't experience any Zoom call quality issues, but I'm just a wall over the modem-router. So what could be the culprit for the horrible Zoom call quality? Is the TV blocking the signals? Is it because the modem-router is sitting on a metal cabinet? If any of you experts could shed some light, that would be great! Thanks in advance :) [link] [comments] |
DeCa or MoCa for connecting guest house coax to main house AT&T fiber? Posted: 12 Jul 2021 07:51 PM PDT Bear with me, I'm not as tech savvy as in my younger days.. We just had AT&T fiber installed, but didn't realize the coax connection to the guest house would be unused. I found DeCa converters that are inexpensive, but I don't know if the signal will have interference. There is no signal going through the coax from the main house to the guest house at this point. It will come from the AT&T wifi gateway (BGW320). Will the internet signal interfere with DeCa or do I need to spend a little more for MoCa? I the the internet speed limitation will be fine. It will probably just be used to run a couple tvs (streaming video and casual video games) and a few mobile devices. It will probably be an improvement from what was there anyway. Thanks (and my apologies if this is incredibly redundant)! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Jul 2021 07:50 PM PDT I am trying to update my UDM Pro firmware through the web GUI, but it's just stuck in an animation that says "Device Updating". It's been this way for almost half an hour. The device itself does not say "Updating" on the small touch screen. I have read about doing it through SSH, but I don't want to restart the machine if it's actually updating and turn it into a paperweight. PLEASE HELP [link] [comments] |
Asus Router Broadcasting, But Devices Unable to Connect Posted: 12 Jul 2021 07:37 PM PDT After dealing with enough issues with the routers Spectrum provided us, I bought an Asus RT-AX68U for our network. I set up it up last week and got everything connected, no problem, even the old pool filter. Then, suddenly yesterday, everything would lose connection. I could still see the network IDs, but could not get anything to connect. I also lost connection for my wired PC. I could not even connect to access the router admin page. A power cycle fixes it, but it keeps happening at differing intervals of time again. I still had the Spectrum router so I plugged it back in for a more steady connection for now. I did some research on the issue but have not really found a solution. I'm nearly ready to just return it. I wonder if it's just a faulty unit or if I should replace it with different model. I only have a few Wifi 6 devices right now, but I figured if I was getting something new I should get something future-proof. Any thoughts / recommendations? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
reliable, affordable gigabit router for a 3 floor townhome? Posted: 12 Jul 2021 07:24 PM PDT Hello everyone, the title basically says it all. I'm moving into a townhome and I'm getting internet through Verizon, which can go up to 1Gbps. I want to get my own router, and I will mostly use a wired connection for my gaming and work on my desktop. If possible, I'd like to plug in my smartTV for smoother streaming too. Every bedroom has cat5e or cat6 ports in the wall! I don't think there will be a lot of traffic as I'll be living alone for now, but it won't be uncommon to have 1 or 2 visitors pretty often. I've been really indecisive because of previous experiences ... I hear a lot of good things about AiMesh, meanwhile my (current) AiMesh system in my parents' home has done nothing but drop connection constantly, sometimes once every hour - I only got around this by setting up a powerline. I hear TP-Link's nighthawks are good, then I hear that a lot of people have issues with drops too.. etc. I don't know what I want to do, networking isn't my forte. I'd really love some input here if possible!! [link] [comments] |

Trouble with ISP/Networking need recommendations Posted: 12 Jul 2021 07:04 PM PDT I use Comcast and have an Arris gateway. I live in a large historic (plaster walls so my wife does not want us running cable) and was using the Arris as a bridge with 4 Asus routers with their AI Mesh feature. They could never stay connected to each other. I am supposed to have 400 mps service and actually get about 430 next to the gateway. If I walk into the next room it drops to 30 and less than 10 in most other parts of the house. This is without the routers. But I want to put the Arris back into bridge mode and have a mesh type network that is speed and connection reliable. I am obviously not a computer guy. My youngest is still at home and built a gaming pc, and this sucks for him. Any suggestions? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Can I reuse old security camera wiring for a mesh network? Posted: 12 Jul 2021 06:36 PM PDT I live in a large brick house which was built in the 1990s. When my parents renovated the house in the early 2000s, they installed security cameras throughout the house. While the VCR and manual for the security system is long gone, the cameras, and crucially the wiring, still remain. I would like to use this wiring to solve a different problem, that being terrible internet connectivity throughout the house. I have spent alot of time researching the different wiring standards and connectors, but I am having a hard time understanding what can be used for internet and what can't, so I would appreciate it if you guys could help me comprehend this stuff. The connector which plugs into each camera looks like an ethernet cable, but only has 6 pins instead of 8. It does however fit inside an ethernet socket. This has lead me to believe it is a 6p6c connector. As for the wiring it is connected to, the labeling on the outside of the wiring doesn't include the category, so I have no idea whether it can be used for ethernet or not. I will post links to images of all this stuff below. My question is simple, can I use this wiring to pass an internet signal with/without modifications, and if so how fast can I expect my speeds to be. I am planning on using nest wifi with ethernet backhaul, as that is what I am already using for the rest of the house (there are 2 cat5e ports in the house which I am already using for my mesh) [link] [comments] |
Please help with networking advice Posted: 12 Jul 2021 06:18 PM PDT I've been having an issue extending network signal across my house (it is split into a duplex, the back half is rented out to tenants). I was wondering what might be the best method to solve this, and which router model/brand is best suited for the task. I previously attempted to connect my modem to a router in my unit, and then used ethernet cable to connect this router to a second router (in the other unit). While it worked, the tenants complained that the signal kept dropping. I suspected that it might be due to the routers being completely different brands (netgear gaming router and Charter Spectrum router), or that I had set up something wrong. In any case, I switched to a new Internet service, so I am starting from scratch with just the modem (had to return the Charter router and the Netgear router had some water damage yesterday). Therefore, I'd like to buy two new routers that will help me get this set up properly. I was also thinking about just having the two routers talk to each other wirelessly to extend the range, instead of having a long ethernet cable extending throughout the house to connect the two. Any advice for these setups would be greatly appreciated. TIA. [link] [comments] |
Moved new apartment with CAT5e+ keystone jacks; as a newbie, how can I make use of them? Posted: 12 Jul 2021 05:40 PM PDT So, I am 100% oblivious to networking stuff. The most I know is plug in coaxial to TV or modem, and then ethernet to my PC. As title says: I recently moved to a new apartment, and saw that it had Ethernet-like ports next to the coaxial jack. Since then I've been trying to look up information about them (that's how I found out about "keystone jacks"). My main question: How can I make use of these? Ideally, I'd like to be able to run it as a standard Ethernet port so that I don't have to run my PC on wireless, or have a long cable going from the living room to my room. Is this possible? If so, what do I need to be able to set it up (tools, skills, etc.)? I'm assuming it is not already set up this way, as my attempt to put plug in from Modem->LivingroomWall and BedroomWall->PC did not work. Is there some test I can/should do to see if the jacks are set up and working? Thanks in advance, and sorry if question is inappropriate for the sub. [link] [comments] |
Need a quality router for a small apartment and for gaming/large downloads. Posted: 12 Jul 2021 05:33 PM PDT I guess I'm new to all the router stuff, as this is my first time living with my own internet, but I have a few requirements.
My main questions are, how crucial is the router if I end up using Ethernet for the PS5 and Mac? I've always use wireless connections in the past, but since my apartment is so small (650sqft) that it's going to be easy to connect everything. Also, I will be using Spectrum's modem and a fairly cheap internet plan, will this and Ethernet make my router selection meaningless? Right now, my top choice seems to be ASUS - Wireless-AX3000, but if I can't even benefit that much from it maybe I can go for something cheaper. Thanks for the help! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Jul 2021 05:05 PM PDT But... These new "smart" switches are confusing. I'm looking for a small switch(like 4 or 8 ports), QoS, doesn't have to be VLAN capable but I'll take it, and here's the kicker. I want to be able to point my browser to the switch's IP for management and I would also like SNMP. That's the part that isn't clearly defined when googling. Any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Self assigned ip when plugging into Ethernet ports Posted: 12 Jul 2021 01:03 PM PDT I setup my home network system yesterday and it seemed to work on all the Ethernet wall jack ports, however, after a few hours none of the ports seemed to be working. The macs say 'self assigned ip' and the windows computers simply say 'no internet'. I think the problem lies with how I set up the patch panel and switch. In my attic I attached the wire from the ONT to the patch panel and then another to the study where the router/modem is. I then connected all of the other Ethernet wires to the patch panel and switch. This whole system is shown in diagram 1. Diagram 2 outlines what I think might fix the problem which involves moving my router to the attic and plugging the ONT directly to the wan port and plugging a cord from the lan port to the patch panel. Am I wrong for thinking this. Nothing I seem to do fixes the problems. I can't test moving the router and such until after people get off work. Edit: Diagram 2 solved my problems. IP's couldn't be given until they had direct access from the router. [link] [comments] |
