Budget of 1500€ in EU for a light gaming/work laptop

    Posted: 13 Jul 2021 01:25 AM PDT

Currently searching to replace my Huawei Matebook 14 which is really great for huge ressources-eating programs like Ableton or blender but doesn't really work for games since it's only an integrated GPU.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase:

    1500€, EU

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life isn't the most important, build quality and performance are important, I'm not a fan of 2 in 1, design is really important in my eyes and a pc like ROG or something that looks like an RGB space ship is not what I'm looking for. A simple pc design like the Huawei Matebook is good.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    The lighter the better

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14 - 15"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Ableton, Blender, Unity, Vegas Pro

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Arma 3, DayZ, BO2/3, War Thunder, Satisfactory, Subnautica, all of this with 30fps min would be great

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A good touchpad and keyboard would be great, a finger-print reader is really useful but not needed

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    N/A

    Thanks for your help guy's!

Upgrade Yoga 2 13" or buy new laptop?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2021 04:37 AM PDT

I have a Lenovo Yoga 2 13" that I bought 2nd hand 5 years ago and it has served me well throughout University. I'm doing a Computer Science Masters this September and I'll likely be using this laptop more often than I did this year (basically not at all) if in person teaching returns as planned. I have a powerful desktop but will be using the laptop in labs, lectures and in the library. Primarilly for VScode with some Android Studio. I have partitioned the HDD and dual boot Ubuntu.

I've realised that the laptop was struggling slightly downloading and installing windows updates and the battery life has gotten poorer than it used to be. The performance levels returned once the updates were fully installed but I've gone from 44000 mAH to 38000mAH according to battery checking software.

I'm considering filling the empty M.2 slot with a 256GB SSD and replacing the battery (hopefully with a larger than default mAH but I'm struggling to understand which batteries may fit and be compatible). I think this should resolve the issues I experienced (During windows update installation Disk usage was 99% for hours).

Do you think that's a fair idea or I should look at buying an entirely new laptop?

    (I'm in the United Kingdom)

Razer Blade (Base model) vs Legion 5 2021 with RTX 3060 .... vs Ultrabook + Cloud gaming?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2021 04:10 AM PDT

Hey everyone! I'm shopping for new gaming solutions and am currently torn between the following options:

    1) Get a traditional gaming laptop, in which case I can't decide between the Razer Blade 15 (Base Model) with Intel i7-10750H 6-core processor, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, 16 GB DDR4 RAM, 512 GB SSD and the Lenovo Legion 5 with Ryzen 5 5600H 8GB 512GB SSD RTX 3060 --- it's surprisingly hard to find a side-by-side comparison on these two. Thermal performance is one major concern.

The Razer is currently about £285 pricier.

    2) Get an ultrabook and optimize for screen quality, portability, and battery life instead, then resort to Cloud Gaming --- I really have no idea of how feasible this is at the moment... not sure of how far cloud gaming has got.

Any thoughts? Btw, building a desktop is not an option right now.

    Laptop Recommendation - MateBook X i7 or Matebook 13 R7

    Posted: 13 Jul 2021 04:03 AM PDT

    Hi Everyone,

I've always been an Intel person by default, but am looking at a new Laptop now, and am keen to check our Ryzen.

I've narrowed it down to these two options, and have read a lot of reviews, benchmarks etc, but can't pin down which is the best 'bang for buck' - between the CPU and GFX.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hp envy x360 13 vs MSI summit e13 flip evo

    Posted: 13 Jul 2021 03:48 AM PDT

Hi guys, I have to buy a new laptop, and i really liked the hp envy x360 13 (Ryzen 7 4700u 16GB Ram, 512GB). I love the balance between performance and portability of this laptop but i may also spend more than 1100 dollars. So I found the MSI summit e13 flip evo, it costs more but maybe it is better. I want a 2 in 1 that can do pretty much anything, from simple school work to more intensive activities like some games. Which one should I take? Are there better 2 in 1 laptops outside these 2 i mentioned?

Is this laptop overkill for my needs?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2021 03:07 AM PDT

I have found this laptop https://ao.com/product/133w8eaabu-hp-laptop-black-75691-251.aspx

I need a laptop which will handle the high demands of my DJing equipment. The thing is, I don't know if this is just too high spec, or even if it is suitable for DJing.

    The equipment I use is:

Numark USB mixer with built-in Serato Soundcard Pulse Digital Vinyl System

I run my equipment using software called Serato.

I'd like to buy from this website since they do finance which is why I've looked at this laptop. It seems to be the best at its price point on the site in my beginner PC knowledge opinion.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

$2,000, but flexible (though would be surprised if needs to go higher)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Reliability, then Battery life (at least 8 hours), then build quality, then touch screen, then performance (do NOT want to be waiting for task switching, but also don't need gaming or video editing performance)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Very. I will be hand carrying the laptop in and out of patient rooms and my office multiple times per hour

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      Probably 13-16 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No. Main programs will be Epic (an electronic medical record program which does include viewing images like X-rays and CT scans) and internet browser to pull up images with patients, in addition to frequent/constant use of a VPN

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      N/A

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard and trackpad (lots of typing), touch screen would be nice, HIGH RELIABILITY (down time is the enemy), good video/audio quality (for meetings and virtual presentations)

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Will be working as a physician in an outpatient practice (seeing people in the office), tasked with buying my own laptop for which they will reimburse me. Battery needs to last at least 8 hours without a charge (preferably 10). Right now between a few options: HP Envy x360, Dell XPS 13, and one of the Surface tablets/laptops.

I am rather more familiar with desktop scene after building my gaming pc, in case that's helpful.

Is the Dell XPS 17 the best choice for me?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2021 12:14 AM PDT

I have been doing research for the past few days trying to decide on a new laptop. I currently have a 2018 Alienware 15 with a 1070. It is so bulky, heavy, and now the battery only has about 1.5 hour of charge. Its a bad laptop for travel which I have to do a lot of. Its amazing for gaming still.

I have a tower at home with a nice GPU I use for gaming, but I need a work laptop that can also handle light gaming well (Minecraft, Crusader Kings III, etc.)

I also do some video editing and rendering. It seems like the XPS 17 (2060 Max Q, 4k screen) is the king, great keyboard, chassis, screen, and battery. I had a Razer blade before the Alienware, I liked it but the fan noise was awful.

This laptop would be primarily for work/travel, but needs to have a decent GPU. I am also considering Alienware and Razer but it seems like they have major drawbacks. I also considered the Surface line but they seem to be either underpowered or overpriced for my needs.

Any thoughts or other suggestions are very appreciated. Thanks.

Typical college student laptop; engineering major

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 11:44 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      1000$ US
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes but not preferred
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I really want a long lasting and durable laptop. For example, I've had my current laptop for 5-6 years and the battery became bad last year so it has to be plugged in 24/7 (inconvenient), so I'd like to have a better laptop life longevity. I'm curious about 2-1 laptops/ultrabook since I'm interested in taking digital notes.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not super
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13-16" is good
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No, maybe some typical engineering programs, don't know yet
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      nope
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Maybe audio (as I listen to music on it a lot). reliable build quality, possibly touchscreen. I'd like the laptop to be easily and affordably repairable. For example, I had to fix my laptop screen once and it costed around 400$ which was steep and honestly not that worth it (and now I likely have to get the battery fixed too...). This is irritating so I'd like a laptop that's easily to stretch it's lifeline.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Would it be worth spending 200$ to change the battery of a 2015 macbook pro or would it be best to find a new laptop journey?

      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
2 in 1 would be nice but not needed, decent performance, battery life does not matter too much
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I'll be traveling so lighter would be better.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A

Touch screen would be nice, but not needed. Should be reliable as I'll be traveling around.

I'm happily using my 2015 macbook pro for teaching/playing stardew valley although video editing is iffy on it. I just know I'm going to need an update before I start traveling long-term.

Budget laptop for writing Chinese with a stylus?

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 07:22 PM PDT

Really had trouble searching this question, so hoping /r/SuggestALaptop can help me out here.

Looking for a budget laptop for normal web browsing and Microsoft apps (Word & Powerpoint). The kicker is that I will be extensively using the stylus to write Chinese characters. I'm currently using my fingers to write characters on my iPhone, but it is quite slow.

I was thinking of going with an iPad Air because the Apple pencil is pretty smooth but worried about the lack of a true file system. I'm curious what you all suggest. Perhaps something in the Surface lineup?

Aiming for < $600 but a bit flexible

Student looking for a laptop that can handle student work + photography + light gaming

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 10:36 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    800-1100 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Refurbs yes, used no

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Not sure what a ultrabook or 2-1 is, in terms of the things listed:

    1. Performance
    2. Build Quality
    3. Battery Life

Gonna need a 512/500 gb SSD.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not too important; obviously, lighter the better

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15 inches if possible, 15.6 optimal. Above 100 hz would be great.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

photo editing [Adobe suite + Capture One or Raw Therapee (essentially same thing as Adobe lightroom) ]

light gaming (Valorant if possible, not required)

Multiple chrome tabs (at least 10 open at the same time)

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Valorant - all low settings, 140 fps if possible, 120 is okay, 100 is bottom line

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

NEED: reliable build quality would be best

NO NEED: touch screen (i generally don't like using/touching my screen), good keyboard (I'll be using an external TKL for the most part), finger-print (i can use passwords/pins just fine), OD (no need, not using discs or cds).

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

-Priorities here are build quality and performance.

-I need at least 16gb of ram, DDR3 okay, obviously DDR4 is best. 20/24 GB would be awesome.

-Furthermore, I need 2 or more USB ports (one for mouse, one for keyboard). More = better b/c 3 ports means I can use one as a plug-in for my SD card reader for photos.

-It seems like there are a lot of gaming laptops that check my boxes but none of them have 16gb ram :(. Anyone got any workarounds?

    - Is it just me or is this deal insane: https://www.ebay.com/itm/303861238770?_trkparms=5373%3A0%7C5374%3AFeatured

Reliable, lightweight Laptop for Software Development somewhere around $1500 CAD or lower (Canada)

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 06:09 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Maximum 1500 CAD or so, prefer as low as possible to meet my requirements

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

If I can buy them from a reputable company

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

No need for 2 in 1, build quality and weight is priority. Then performance. Battery life just needs to be about 3-4 hours of hard work at most, and the rest just browsing/word processing

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight is important. Thinness is not as important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Maximum 15.6 or so

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I might play dirt rally and assetto corsa, but that's it. Relatively low requirements so most IGPUs can handle it nowadays

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

USB type c would be nice. Ergonomic/good keyboard is appreciated. Would probably be using a mouse for any real work so touchpad not super important. Aesthetics are somewhat important

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am a Computer Science student, so I will be using it for some software development and also normal word processing use, but I don't expect the projects to be overly large or complex. I've done internships with a company laptop (Dell XPS 15, i7 6820HQ, 32GB RAM), which even for their large code base was more than powerful enough for me.

For best bang for buck, I'm eyeing laptops with an i5 or AMD equivalent (no preference) and 16GB of RAM. I'm just leaning towards getting a new XPS 15 or 13 for myself since I really like this one, but I know they have overheating issues which leads to battery inflating. That's why I'm here looking for other recommendations that might be cheaper or just alternatives to an XPS.

EDIT: I've been doing some more research and I keep seeing the new Macbook air m1 show up as a good recommendation. With a student discount, that would put the price just around my budget with 16gb of ram. Can any developers weigh in on if they find all the software they need on mac? Obviously I would be able to play any games on it, but if that's not super important to me, is this a good choice?

    Thanks!

Use: General college stuff (meets, MS office), Casual e-sports gaming and some AAA game titles, learning Adobe software (esp. photoshop).

Display: At least 15.6 inch, 250 nits and 120 Hz IPS panel. Colour accuracy is not a priority, even 45% NTSC would work.

CPU: Preferably AMD Ryzen 7 5000 series (multitasking is important), if intel the preferably 6 cores or more and base clock speed preferably 3.0+ GHz.

GPU: GTX 1660+ or RTX 3050Ti + 4/6 GB GDDR 4+ vRAM. TGP 80W without dynamic boost.

RAM: at least 8GB (3200 MHz upgradable to at least 16 GB)

ROM: 0.5/ 1 TB SSD [or 1 TB HDD + 256 SSD (not preferred)]

Example Laptop: FA506QM-HN009TS fits everything but is just unavailable :( .

    Budget strictly < 1.20 Lacs

Can wait approximately for even a month if deal is great.

P.S. Web cam is important so don't recommend Strix or Scar, also if nothing comes up may be I'll wait for HP Victus. Sorry for any typographical error.

Getting a laptop for programming away from home. First time.

    Posted: 12 Jul 2021 09:36 PM PDT

Hey, all. I'm looking to buy a laptop because I'm going out of town in November and still want to be available if an emergency happens at my job. Also, though, I feel it's kinda weird that I DON'T have one after all these years as a computer/programming guy. That's why I'm looking for a decent one I can use outside of just work. Otherwise, I could probably just "rent out" a work laptop. My primary uses of it will be web surfing, YouTube video watching, and programming. I'll use a VPN to remote into work.

    The form:

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$1000 USD; United states of America.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No. New only.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I am using the laptop for regular surfing and programming.

I want a good processor and battery life for that. Outside of that, I want a regular laptop.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not very. I guess I don't want a brick, but I don't need to be able to cut a tomato with it either.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

My screens at home range from 25-27"; I think the minimum I could take with a laptop is 15".

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No gaming/video editing, but I want to program with Visual Studio.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    -SSD as primary drive.

-Good processor; at least a quad-core.

    Balanced between all i guess

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not a whole lot

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Yes, photo editing, ARC GIS, Indesign, Photoshop, Lightroom

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    No gaming

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Nope, im easy.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

So my budget is around $1000 - $1200 CAD. I have owned Macs my entire adult life but I have recently decided to go with a PC. Main things I'd like to do: run Arc-GIS, InDesign, Lightroom, Photoshop. Is there any laptop you can recommend me in that price range? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
