Would you recommend the Lenovo Legion 5 With R5 4600H and Core 1660 Ti As A low-mid range gaming laptop?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 05:48 AM PDT

In my country the gaming laptop range isn't very broad but I stumbled upon this Lenovo Legion 5 With AMD R5 4600H and Geforce GTX 1660 Ti. I don't need a crazy good laptop but good enough to record League of Legends at 60fps with high or ultra settings and I'm planning to have this laptop for many years to come.

The laptop currently costs €750 in my country ($850-900) and as I don't have a lot of experience with computer specs, I was wondering if this is a good price for those parts? Thanks a lot!

Edit: Geforce 1660 Ti, not Core

Laptop for gaming under 400$ usd suggestions?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 12:17 AM PDT

I'm not really a pc expert, I just listen to whatever answer google says so it kinda shortens the list of what is supposedly good and not. The only thing I'm picky about is storage space, ram, processor (unless you personally know its good), brand, and kinda the look.

I like a good 400-500 GB storage with 8-12-16 GB RAM. I sometimes do video editing and recording with Camtasia 9, and I mostly play Minecraft Java/Bedrock, Animal Jam, and sometimes sims 4, I just want anything that runs smoothly and fast with all of that, but it seems impossible to find something trustworthy that meets my understanding of a decent laptop lol, and with my given budget idkk.

Any help would be appreciated thank you! If it'd help you if I were to use the form post I could, I just don't understand much of it, but lmk! I might not look here (I don't use reddit) and I think I'd like some longtime help with this ^^'' if this is appropriate and not against any rules(?)

Should I prefer more on thermals than performance to expect durability?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 04:58 AM PDT

First thing my country has Legion 5 2020 R5 4600h, gtx 1650 1tb+256gb ssd 8gb RAM 120hz at 915 USD and Hp Pavilion, asus Tuf f15, lenovo ideapad with gtx 1650ti and rest of the specs same as legion at a lesser price which is known for it's not so good thermals. Also we have MSI Bravo 15 with 5500m whose performance sits between 1650ti and 1660ti at 840 USD which is quite infamous for the reviewers paid off incident. So the question actually is should a budget gamer look for build design than the performance that a gaming laptop provides?

Dell inspiron vs lenovo yoga vs asus zenbook

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 11:57 PM PDT

Hi guys. Need some recommendations here.

I'm looking for a laptop for work/studies, with some light gaming (football manager, escape from tarkov) when I'm taking a break.

I don't think i really need something really powerful although the 2021 Zephyrus G14 with 5900hx is also in my shortlist.

My primary requirements are that the laptop must be easy to carry between my home, office and school since I'm studying part time. Nothing above 1.8kg. Preferably something thats reliable as well (less qc issues).

    Shortlist

    Dell inspiron 13 - 1300sgd i7-11370H, 16gb lddr4x, 512gb ssd, mx450 gpu, 13.3-inch 16:10 QHD+ (2560 x 1600)

    Del inspiron 14 - 1250sgd i7-11370H, 16gb lddr4x, 512gb ssd, mx450 gpu, 14.0-inch FHD (1920 x 1080)

    Lenovo yoga slim 7i pro - 2000sgd i7-11370H, 16gb lddr4x, 1tb ssd, mx450 gpu, 14" 2.8K (2880x1800) 90hz ips

    Lenovo yoga slim 7i carbon - 1900sgd i7-11370H, 16gb lddr4x, 512gb ssd, mx450 gpu, 13.3-inch 16:10 QHD+ (2560 x 1600)

    Lenovo yoga slim 7 pro - 1900sgd Ryzen 5900hx, 16gb lddr4x, 512gb ssd, 13.3-inch 16:10 QHD+ (2560 x 1600)

    Asus zenbook 14 ux425 - 1700sgd i7-1165g7, 16gb lddr4x, 512gb ssd, 14.0-inch FHD (1920 x 1080)

    Asus zenbook 14 ux435 - 2400sgd (outlier) i7-1165g7, 16gb lddr4x, 1tb ssd, mx450 gpu, 14.0-inch FHD (1920 x 1080)

    Zephyrus g14 - 3000sgd (outlier) Ryzen 5900hs, rtx 3060

The zenbook 14 with mx450 is kinda out of my budget for a simple ultrabook but some thoughts will be welcome as well. Feel free to give more recommendations too.

    Laptop suggestion!

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 06:34 PM PDT

Easy on pricing. But happy to go the cheapest that fills my criteria. Purpose: use in casual teaching at schools

    • Needs 8 hrs battery and snappy.

    • needs to last long term. Don't plan on buying again for a long time. So hopefully upgradable ram.

    • Can be second hand! Had good experiences second hand.

    • needs to be quick and snappy. FORM BELOW

    Total budget:

Doesnt matter. Just the cheapest version that fits the criteria below

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    -yes

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    -battery life, performance, build quality

How important is weight and thinness to you?

-needs to be fairly portable. Moving it around all the time. So fairly important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    • not really just max 15 inch.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • no games just using it for classroom (as teacher)

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices

-nope. Just needs at least 8 hrs battery life.

All the rest is chill. Also since I'm using for teaching. I probably need a windows computer.

Please help me Reddit Kenobi. You are my only hope.

I'm thinking to buy a new laptop because the current one is really trash. It's way too slow and it makes everything difficult to do, even open a fucking browser. I don't want to spend over 400 euros. I use it to navigate on the internet and programming. Any suggestion? Thanks...

Marketing student graduating in December, causal gamer, looking for a new laptop- Mac or PC to last 5 years or so.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 07:15 AM PDT

I like to believe I have an OK knowledge of laptops and computers, but I guess I don't really and would like some feedback on what would work best. I am open to a MacBook, however, I don't think it will run the games I want to play. But if it would run other applications better than I would be open to one due to the fact that I can sync all of my Apple products.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1,200 ideally, can go up to $1,800 for something that is just amazing but would be more comfortable around the $1,200 mark.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
    1. Performance
    2. Graphics
    3. Battery
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not a huge factor for me, but will be traveling to school with me and elsewhere.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
N/A, I have 14" now and enjoy this size though, probably not willing to go smaller though.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Yes, adobe photoshop and applications, light gaming.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
The Sims 4, runs fine on my current laptop- I don't believe it needs anything crazy to run as my laptop is pretty basic. I would like to buy Planet Zoo, does not run on my current. Here are the specs needed:
    • CPU: Intel i7-4770k / AMD Ryzen 5 1600
    • CPU SPEED: Info
    • RAM: 16 GB
    • OS: Windows 10 64bit
    • VIDEO CARD: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 (8GB) or AMD Radeon RX 580 (8GB)
    • PIXEL SHADER: 5.1
    • VERTEX SHADER: 5.1
    • FREE DISK SPACE: 16 GB
    • DEDICATED VIDEO RAM: 8192 MB

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Touch-screen would be nice, but not a deal breaker at all.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I am graduating in December and I really just need something reliable to get me through the semester and after graduation. I don't have a ton of stuff on my laptop and don't anticipate putting a lot on a new one. I would like the option to play the games listed above though. I also really would like something that runs adobe photoshop apps smoothly. Will be running Citrix and the like but that seems to perform well on my current laptop as well.

Deciding Between Alienware M15 R4 and MSI

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 06:50 AM PDT

    I'm deciding between Alienware M15 R4 RTX3070 and i7-1087OH MSI GE66 RTX3070 and 1075OH

I also found a few models with 3060 and 6gb VRAM which are much cheaper but I assume they will not perform well, correct?

What's important to me: As not noisy as possible. I've heard that Alienware has this "breezy" sound, would it be more pleasant than the MSI one? Less heat.

MSI one is 100$ more expensive but seems better in terms of noise, I like Alienware design more.

I'm confused between these 2 laptops please suggest which one would be better at performance. I'm kind of concerned about the placement of heat vents in the Ideapad. And it is very confusing to select between Ryzen and Intel.

I want decent performance and longevity and durability. I'm done with my current i3 5th gen model. Help me!

Is this a suitable laptop, or should I trade in and trade up? (last day to return)

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 06:36 AM PDT

Two weeks ago I was about to start a remote learning internship that would require 8+ hours of zoom each day and my previous computer broke. I immediately went to staples, looked around, and found a Lenovo Ideapad (a brand I've had success with in the past) This Specific Model Here that looked pretty good, then found a version the same model but upgraded with more memory and features on sale for the exact same price as the lesser version (I think it was this) at $450. The guy did warn me against getting an i3 model and said to look for an i5 especially if I'd be using zoom. Outside of school and watching stuff I'm not a very computer intensive guy (though that may change as I get more into coding and online classes). I did manage to run the full two weeks relatively well, though there were two days where the zoom kept crashing (admittedly by that point between installing stuff for the new computer and online data classes I had over 200 tabs open). It's pretty comfortable to use and the screen is nice. Mouse isn't great but I can just buy a separate one to plug in.

In spite of this though I do worry about it getting power crept especially since I've got plenty of college ahead of me. Today's the last day to return it so I'm wondering if I should get my money back and maybe invest in something else. Again, I don't do too much serious computing. My biggest ambition in that regard would be doing coding, and the possibility of doing YouTube in the future (though maybe I'd just get a separate computer entirely for that).

From what little research I've done I've heard this is a good model. Though again, I'm not sure if that's a smarter buy, or just unnecessary/a potential waste. The crux being is it a bigger waster to buy the slightly cheaper and simpler one with the fear of it being power crept in a fairly short time, or the more expensive thing which could have the same shelf life or even potentially die sooner (plus even a high spec machine could get power crept depending on how things go).

Also two important things to note before giving some advice. I don't have much money at this current moment, but I am about to be getting over $3000 from an upcoming tax return, so money won't be too much of an issue (though I don't wanna over invest in something that'll only last a year or two). I also won an Ipad (This one specifically) from my internship that's coming in the mail. Currently I don't really need one, so I may just sell it or give it away, but maybe if I look more towards a high performance machine the Ipad can be my casual device (genuine question though, is there any advantage to having a laptop and a tablet? because outside of reading I don't see much extra use from it if I already have a laptop).

    STRIX G15 2020 RTX 2070 vs. STRIX SCAR III 2019 for AUTOCAD+SKP

The ones above are my top 2, but I'm also open for other suggestions. Hoping someone will notice this, I really don't want to waste my hard-earned money on this one big decision. Thanks a lot!

Gaming and General Purpose Laptop - €1200ish [EU/UK]

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 05:56 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

€1200 or so is the budget, can push up to €1500 if needed. I am currently in Sweden, but will be in the UK and Germany soon, so will have the option to buy there

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, current general use laptop is a refurb Thinkpad and I am quite happy with it.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    1. Build quality
    2. Battery Life
    3. Form factor (Want it to look reasonably plain)
    4. Performance
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Somewhat important, I travel a good amount and dont want to have to carry something too massive. But I can manage realistically.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14" is great for me I think. I will use a dock and connect to external monitors for gaming most of the time anyway.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Some very light CAD work for 3D printing. And gaming of course, nothing too intense though.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Baldurs Gate 3 (Medium quality at least, +60fps), LoL (+60fps)

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A good keyboard is quite important I think, no need for finger print or optical drives.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

As mentioned before I will be using it with a dock for the gaming side of things. But often I will travel with it and use it for watching stuff, so screen quality is not the utmost important for me.

ThinkPad E15 vs Asus Zenbook 14

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 04:20 AM PDT

    Thinkpad - 16GB RAM, intel i7 11th gen

    Zenbook - 16GB RAM, ryzen 7 5700U

I currently have a 14 inch laptop, and it just feels a bit small for work. The thinkpad comes at 15.6inch screen and good specs, but its battery is only 45WH opposed to 67WH for the Zenbook.

Thinkpad claims 8.5hours average battery backup on the lenovo website, and a 10.5hours backup on amazon.

They both are from quite good series of their manufacturers.

    Any help is appreciated

Need help with new work laptop (US, budget ~$1000-$2000)

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 12:24 AM PDT

Hey y'all, I'm a student majoring in game design who's been using an HP Omen gaming laptop for the past 4-ish years now. This fella's served me pretty well, but lately, I'm afraid it's really on its last legs (it crashed twice today in the span of less than 10 minutes while I was working and when I showed the error to my more tech-savvy friends, they more or less replied with "Oh no.") I spent the day just moving my more important things like projects and artwork onto USB drives and Google Drive because I honestly don't know just how much longer my poor laptop is going to last. Unfortunately, I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to things like tech, so I was hoping I'd get some suggestions here.

    Budget: ~$1000-$2000, give or take

Refurbs?: I don't know much about anything in this field, so preferably I'd like a new machine? But if a refurb is recommended I'm willing to check it out.

Priorities: Since I'm a game artist, graphics would be pretty important, as well as performance. I'd need a pretty beefy machine to not only run demanding games but also to work on them (3d models and all). I don't care too much about battery life since I'm likely not going to be taking it outside of my workplace.

Preferred Screen Size: Probably on the larger side? The one I'm using right now is a 17-inch.

Programs and Games: The programs I will be using are mainly things like Unity, 3DS Max, Maya, Photoshop, Clipstudio, and similar programs if my classes require them. As for games, I would like to be able to run things like Resident Evil Village (and stream them at the same time since I do that for fun on my off time.)

Specific Requirements: Nothing too specific. I definitely won't be needing things like fingerprint readers or touch-screen, but a good general build and nice keyboard would be cool!

    Thank you guys so much, I am very grateful for any help I can get ;w;

M1 MacBook Air or Thinkpad T14 AMD?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 07:25 PM PDT

I basically just don't want to cross the border of $1000. Now, my brain tells me to buy the mac but my heart is into the thinkpad. I will use the laptop for my only computer and it has to be powerful enough. I plan on buying the base model T14 AMD and upgrade it with more storage and RAM. But I don't know how long the 50 wh battery should last. Mac could be great but Apple just doesn't ship to my country and any repair or software issue will be excruciating. Moreover, I have used an iphone 12 max pro but didn't like it so I'll keep my android phone and I have been a long time windows user. So people, chop chop, which one should I choose?

also, if you happen to know that how long the t14 amd lasts on battery then please share. TIA!

    Choosing between several secondhand PCs

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 03:59 AM PDT

    Hey all!

I've just started looking for a laptop (my first). General purposes, bit of everything, some light gaming (small easy to run indie games). 600€ or less budget.

I ran into a dude who sells a ton of different Dell models secondhand. It seems like the best kind of deal I can get right now, being a thrifty spender.

However, it's hard for me to know which one would suit me better.

    My priorities are :

durability (10+ years) > build quality (esp keyboard/trackpad) > battery life (7+ hrs) > weight

And of course I'd like for the hardware to be good enough for small indie games.

The different models are : (he's not very exhaustive on cpu and gpu specs)

    • Dell Latitude 7490 (i5-7300U / HD 620) 400€

    • Dell Latitude 5400 (i5 8th gen / unknown gpu) 450€

    • Dell Latitude 7300 (i5-8365U / unknown gpu) 460€

    • Dell XPS 13 9360 (i7-7500 / unknown gpu) 500€

    • Lenovo Thinkpad L13 (i5-10310U / unknown gpu) 550€

    • Dell Latitude 5410 / 5310 (both unknown) 600€

Out of all of these, what do you think best fits my criteria? Are these good deals or should I keep looking for something else?

Thank you all for your time :)

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

100,000 - 125,000 lkr , in Sri Lanka. I might get the laptop from overseas and have it brought if its cheaper elsewhere.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, battery life, form factor, build quality, from most to least

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not very, I would carry it about but I can handle a heavier laptop if essential

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I will be doing video editing, very lightly on Filmora perhaps, and photo editing on illustrator, PhotoShop and InDesign. Light gaming as well if possible.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Valorant, setting and FPS is flexible

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      Not really

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm pretty flexible with what I want to do on it, and I'm willing to compromise if necessary. My main issues are that I'm not sure what components I need to do what is necessary. I've used my previous laptop for 8 years now, since I was 9 years old, and I got it when it was brand new; I'm a high schooler now and I use it for online school and a little freelance design work. I'm in a rut now because my old laptop won't run any of the design applications I need and I desperately need help. Don't be thrown off by my country of purchase, please help me out with anything you can in terms of specs I will need for the laptop and I'd be eternally grateful. Thank you so much!

Poland, laptop for technical student running Linux up to about 4000PLN

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 03:35 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget

About 4000PLN can go a little bit higher.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes but new are preferred.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Build quality, battery, performance.

Build quality is important one here, because I want to use this laptop for at least 5 years.

Battery and performance are a little bit more complicated. I tend to travel two times a week for few hours during which I could do some work so battery have to last for 5-6 hours of moderate load. After reaching this mark, I am willing to sacrifice battery for performance.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

If it fits in a backpack it's ok.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

A little bit connected with the previous question. 14 inch preferred, 15 inch acceptable upper limit.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Mostly programming. Some CAD and PCB designing. Also data visualization using Blender.

Sometimes I have to use software that does not work on Linux so it would be nice to be able to run Windows VM decently. Mostly things like LabView for rather simple projects. I know that LabView works on Linux but our uni has only windows license so VM it is.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Minecraft, TBOI, LoopHero... Non shadered Minecraft running at 60FPS with moderate graphics settings is all I need here.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I really want ethernet port. Good keyboard with backlit would be nice. I'd like to avoid gaming aesthetic but I have a feeling that would be hard. It may come with Windows preintalled, I'd probably reinstall OS anyway.

Hi! Looking for a laptop under £1000 for music production, and light gaming (planet zoo lol)

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 03:07 AM PDT

Hi! I know very little about laptops, and have scrolled through this sub but haven't yet found anything about music production (Maybe I didn't look hard enough) and looking to get one to meet the above needs. Music production is the main thing, but light gaming and general uni work are essential too.

    Thanks!

      1500€-2000€ - Italy

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
performance > build quality > battery life

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
something not that heavy would be cool but I don't really care that much.

Assassin's Creed Origins and Red Dead Redemption 2.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good keyboard with possibly the numpad.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I own a desktop with i5-6400, 12,0 GB RAM, GeForce 745 and I can only do small projects with it, I need a laptop because of portability and also I want something more powerfull. I made some reserch on my own and I believe I would need a i7 11th gen, 16gb RAM and RTX 30 series laptop. My main concern is the overheating while rendering, I really don't know how well laptops can handle it so I would really like some suggestions.

Dell XPS 13 or Apple MacBook Air ?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2021 07:52 AM PDT

I think I have narrowed my $2000 budget down to these 2 laptops. What are your recommendations between the 2?

I know mac requires some adaptable devices. I can include that in my budget so if that is your recommendation (or even if not lol) can you tell me what apple products I would need to purchase other than the laptop itself?

    Thank you in advance!
