What happens if I change from one Windows to another? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 11:12 PM PDT I've been thinking about upgrading to Windows 10 for a while, but I share my pc with the rest of my family so it's full of important stuff like pictures or school homework. I was worried if I was gonna lose all of this stuff if I changed to Windows 10. I'm using Windows 7, if that's important [link] [comments]

A fuller discussion of TPM, what it does, what it provides Posted: 27 Jun 2021 08:35 AM PDT I was wondering if anyone could point to an article or some personal knowledge of some of the specific things that a TPM offers in Windows and how it improves security. There's been a lot of discussion about the Win11 CPU support list but people seem to say the TPM requirement is more understandable and easy to satisfy. What will it actually do? One use case often mentioned is BitLocker. Today I use BitLocker without a TPM by entering an encryption password on bootup. How will TPM make BitLocker more secure compared to doing this? Another one mentioned is certificates. Which certificates? Most certificates are used by the browser - will Chrome utilize the TPM? Microsoft's blog post about it says "Its purpose is to help protect encryption keys, user credentials, and other sensitive data...". Since BitLocker can be used without a TPM and most people's sensitive data and credentials are in plain files or browser password managers, I'm just looking for concrete examples of the increased security TPM will provide in practice. A lot of perfectly good systems don't have any form of TPM, not even 1.2, like early generation Core CPUs, so it seems inaccurate to say that practically any "modern" CPU provides it. Posted: 27 Jun 2021 02:01 PM PDT If you have an issue with your Microsoft Store, cannot install games, store freezing, store slow to react, grayed out install button, download not finishing, cannot reset your store with wsreset, well ignore all the complicated solutions that involve using Windows Troubleshooting or Command Prompt or resetting Registry keys. Instead, just update your Windows 10 to the latest version. Click Start (bottom left window button), start typing in Update, and click "Check for updates". If you can't update because it gives you an error (this may happen if your wuauserv is not working), then don't worry about that and go to this official Microsoft link to manually update with the Windows Update Assistant. https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10. In the link click "Update now" and it will download the assistant that will take you through the update. It may take about an hour or so to update. I updated Windows 10 to version 21H1 (OS Build 19043.1052) and the store runs properly and smoothly. I can now install Minecraft and play with friends. Happy days. [link] [comments]

Will Windows 10 education be able to update to Windows 11? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 07:36 PM PDT Hey guys, I got my windows 10 education from school for free, been using it since graduation last year. I have been trying to find out if the education edition of Windows 10 is eligible for upgrade when it is released. If it isnt, and I need to purchase the entire copy of windows 11 pro, I question if the purchase is worth it. It furthers my wondering when I see I need to install a TPM to even meet the criteria. Performance improves when I look at task manager Posted: 27 Jun 2021 06:53 PM PDT I have a Lenovo laptop, sometimes the fan goes full power, if I don't investigate it just keeps going, but once I open task manager to check resources usage it shows 10-15% usage and the fan slows down, is windows or any application detecting task manager and stopping? it doesn't speed back up after I close the task manager. Power mode slider in taskbar battery icon is not the real power mode? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 11:00 AM PDT There is a power mode selector in mobility center, and of course you can change it in powercfg.cpl then there is a power mode slider if you click the battery icon in taskbar. but that appears to be only for within the balanced mode. if i move the slider, the first 2 places do not change.. if I change the setting in one of the 2 first places, the otherone changes too, but the slider disappear. so what does the slider change exactly, can't be a fake one?? Isn't Windows 11 keyboard just SwiftKey from android? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 07:18 AM PDT So, I recently checked out windows 11 screenshots, it looks like they're using SwiftKey. Or just a clone of it. The exact same keyboard, swipe keyboard, voice recognition and gif support. I think they specifically bought SwiftKey back then to get access to their source code to improve windows keyboard. Or maybe it's either running SwiftKey android app in windowed mode. If it's running an android app in the background could this be why they force the windows 11 installation to check TPM and Secure boot? So it supports every feature in windows 11? How to fix keyboard doing "weird things" - SOLVED Posted: 27 Jun 2021 03:09 PM PDT Hi there! If I run into an issue with a software but there isn't a website that gives a clear answer, I make a Reddit post once I find a solution so hopefully it comes up in other people's searches. I randomly had an issue with my keyboard where the keys did not function correctly. (OS is Windows 10, hardware is a 2020 Dell laptop.) Pressing "M" would mute my tab in Firefox. "F" brought up "Find and Replace" in my word processor, et cetera. There doesn't seem to be a consensus on why this happens (it's not due to damage or a particular keystroke) but I did find a solution on this web forum. The only true solution seems to be a hard restart, but user EhayBie has a simpler option: use Ctrl+Alt+Delete (which still works despite the error) to access the troubleshooting menu. Click the first option "Lock" to lock the computer, then simply log back in with your password or PIN. This functions the same way as a hard reset, and your keyboard should return to its normal operation. Hope this helps! :) [link] [comments]
Poll: Does your computer meet the Windows 11 system requirements? Posted: 27 Jun 2021 06:28 AM PDT We need some visibility on what percentage of computers are failing to meet the Windows 11 system requirements. Check it using Microsoft's PC Health Check Tool and vote in the poll. Microsoft's PC Health Check Tool: Windows 11 System Requirements: Alternative tool: WhyNotWin11: [link] [comments]
