I need a laptop suggestion for my gaming group. I host at my local gaming store.

I need to find a lot/batch of laptops on ebay/facebook? They will have a few functions.

    1. Play back of video from a local server.
    2. Viewing of pdf files.
    3. Basic browser usage.

So at least 1080 screen. And this is where I'm having problems finding something.

Preferably runs Linux without too much hassle.

    Thanks

Need helpful input on a potential laptop buy!

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 05:32 PM PDT

So I'm a 3d student at the moment and have been choosing between two laptops to do work on in my spare time and for class, I'm struggling to decide between two laptops rather than a PC just for portability sake.

    HP Envy x360

    AMD Ryzen 7 // 16GB RAM // 512 Storage // Raedon Graphics // 15.6''

    ASUS Rog Strix

    AMD Ryzen 7 // 16GB RAM // 512 Storage // GeForce RTX 3060 // 17.3''

I'm leaning towards HP because of the stylus and the potential to model on the screen however it's not as powerful i dont think as the ASUS and would love some input of your guys' opinions on these!

    Which laptop should I buy?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 04:05 AM PDT

I'm looking to buy a new laptop but since I live in a rural part of Malaysia, my options are fairly limited. I've found some options are that within my price range -

    1. DELL G3-3500 (Intel Core i7-10750H, 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4 2933MHz RAM , 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX1660Ti 6GB GDDR6)
    2. LENOVO Legion 5 (Intel Core i7-10750H, 8GB DDR4 2933 RAM, 512GB M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti 4GB GDDR6)
    3. ASUS TUF DASH F15 (Intel® Core™ i7-11370H Processor 3.3 GHz, 512GB M.2 SSD PCIEG3x2 NVME (Extra 1 slots), 8GB DDR4 3200MHZ, NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3050Ti 4GB GDDR6)

All of the options above have the same price , RM 4,799 which is around US$ 1164 except for the DELL G3 which is currently on discount at RM 4,399. There are also some cheaper ones like -

    1. ASUS TUF F15 (Intel® Core™ i5 10300H , 8GB DDR4 2933Mhz RAM, 512GB PCIE NVME SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX1650Ti 4GB GDDR6 ) - RM 3,999 (US$ 970)
    2. LENOVO Legion 5 (Intel Core i5-10300H, 8GB DDR4 2933Mhz RAM, 512GB M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 4GB GDDR6) - RM 4,099 (US$ 994)
    3. LENOVO Ideapad Gaming 3i (Intel Core i5-10300H, 8GB DDR4 3200Mhz RAM, 512GB M.2 2242 NVME SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX1650Ti 4GB GDDR6) - RM 3,599 (US$ 873)
    4. DELL G3 15 (Intel Core i7-10750H Processor, 8GB DDR4, 2933MHz Ram, 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX1650Ti 4GB GDDR6) - RM 4,499(US$ 1091)

There are some MSIs and Acers in similar price range but since I'm looking for something that looks simple, I ended up picking these options. I'd like to know what is the best option for me. I'm wondering if they can play "recent" games like RDR2, Sekiro and etc. I'm not looking to run on Ultra settings or anything, if they run 60 FPS at med-high settings, it's good enough for me. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Help me find myself a laptop - A CSE Student.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 03:31 AM PDT

    I need a laptop with a budget between 700 to 900 USD (50k to 65k INR) .

1TB HDD (256GB SSD if possible)

    8 GB RAM or higher

    2 GB Graphics or higher

LED Display or something better (but should be energy efficient *NO IPS Displays*)

    2.5 GHz(preferred) or 2+GHz

USB 3.1 ports , HDMI (if possible)

HP, Dell, Lenovo, Asus or any other good brand.

Should be available in India now or in the near Future.

The lesser the power consumed the better. Battery Efficiency is very important, since I'm always traveling.

If you have to compromise on something, its absolutely alright, I am a Computer Science Student, I am not sure as to what I want to do with the computer and its mostly for studying and stuff. I play games occasionally, and planning on getting into Game Development. I am also looking for one from my side, but since I am not that experienced, I am looking for some advice.

I wanna be able to use it for student purposes as well as general use. I hope I find a good one : )

14" or 15.6" laptop for software development?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 03:16 AM PDT

I'm going to study IT, so I need a light laptop with good battery life. I will be using it for Android development as well. I've decided to go with HP ProBook/EliteBook series with Ryzen CPU. Only thing I'm not sure about is display size. I've compared 14" and 15.6" laptops at the local store, and 15.6" is much more comfortable to my eyes. It doesn't strain them as much as 14". But 14" laptops are ligher, smaller, and IMO look better. Battery life should be a little bit better with 14" as well. What are your toughts on that? Is 14" screen good enough for some programming?

Other than HP Elitebook I've considered Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 with 16gb soldered ram. Amount of RAM is the issue here. I doubt it will be enough, especially in next 2-3 years.

Best build quality / battery for mixed use under $1000

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 07:04 AM PDT

Looking for a mixed-use laptop for office work, browsing, and media consumption. My current laptop does these things fine, but the battery life is absymal (and wasn't great when new), the keyboard is so-so and the trackpad is bad. I want to be able to take it out and not worry about constantly lugging a charger around. I bought a replacement battery from eBay but it made no difference. Toshiba does not make laptops any more so I think any kind of replacement is a crapshoot. Right now my top picks are the HP Envy x360 and Thinkpad L13 Yoga.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $1000 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
High priority on battery life, keyboard, screen, general build quality, in that order. I don't own a tablet so I am considering a 2-in-1.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Moderately important.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I know it's not as common size, but 14 inch preferred.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Light-medium gaming, office work, zoom conferences.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
This is optional, I don't want a gaming laptop, BUT if it could feasibly run Overwatch, low/medium 60 FPS, that's a bonus. If the technology is not there yet, then oh well.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
See above. Don't care about finger print reader or optical drive. A good trackpad would be nice. At least 3 USB ports would be nice.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
This is not an urgent purchase; I'm open to waiting until Black Friday later this year. I've had my current laptop since 2015; anything I buy needs to last for 5 years minimum. If the tech hasn't really progressed since then, I'm open to waiting even longer.

    Budget but Good

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 12:25 AM PDT

I am looking for a laptop under 750 USD, can be AMD(preferred because of better and more affordable processors) or Intel, I've previously used a ThinkPad T460s (2K Display with 100% SRGB, i5 6th gen, 8 GB Ram) and I loved its Keyboard!

Initially I thought of getting Lenovo Flex 5 14(Ryzen 5 4500u), but there were issues with its availability, plus I didn't have money for it, later on I found out about IdeaPad Gaming (AMD Ryzen 4600H version, for 699$), and also Asus Vivobook Flip 14 (Ryzen 4500U, 4700U, (599$, 699$) newer models in almost the same price range have 5500U, 5700U)

Reasons for considering IdeaPad Gaming(sadlyit isn't available for shipping to my country now :_) ):

2k Display with 120 HZ refresh rate
    AMD Ryzen chipset(4600H)
    Dedicated Graphics Card(GTX 1660)
KEYBOARD(Big plus point, I tried the keyboard out on another more expensive model of the same and it almost feels like a ThinkPad, not quite there, but its still amazing)

Reasons for considering Asus VivoBook Flip 14(The higher end model is still out of stock :_) ):

    Newer CPU(Ryzen 7 5700U)
Metal Body(unlike the Lenovo Flex 5)
2 in 1(not really a plus point, but maybe)

Now above mentioned are the things I love about these laptops, but since both of them aren't available(YET) I am looking for something similar(or even better maybe), would love to see what you guys recommend, and you can even let me know if I should wait.

It needs to be able to run multiple virtual machines at once. I usually have 2 windows VMs running which I use the GUI and do heavy CPU work on. And about 5-6 Linux VMs which I also do alot of heaving lifting with. I use a lot of hashcat and similar tools. As well as many pen-teating tools that end up taking up a lot of ram and CPU usage.

I am not opposed to Mac or System76 or Purism machine or something like that. Windows does not matter to me.

I need a laptop, mostly for text editing, maybe gaming. Good linux support is important. [Hungary] [400 OR 1200$, please see below]

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 12:28 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Very dynamic. However, I'd like to keep it under 400$ if it does not have a dedicated gpu. Otherwise, it can go up to 1200$

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Absolutely

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Battery life is important. I don't care much about build quality. About performance, it's either minimal, or should be able to run games, so both extremes are fine.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight should be as low as possible. I don't care about it being thin tho.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

If it's gaming capable, only 15.6 and above. If it is not, anything is fine.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

This is a tricky question, because I consider myself a gamer. Just in the current market situation, my latest gaming device decided to commit suicide, and I can't afford a desktop gpu right now. Not in my country at least. Laptop prices are mostly unaffected tho, so if you have a recommendation for a good gaming laptop, I'm open to that too. In that case, the gpu should be capable to run no man's sky.

Also, I mostly run a web browser, a latex editor (like texmaker), and some data analysis software (like gnuplot). So I don't need anything special if you are not recommending a gaming capable device.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

No man's sky on medium 60 fps League of legends on high 100 fps Apex legends on medium 80 fps

Please note, that I can live without gaming, but if you suggest a gaming capable device, it should run these well.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Good keyboard is a must have, since I'm writing a ton of text daily. Also, the device shouldn't get very warm (except during gaming ofc), I'm very sensitive to it. Linux support is very important too, so nvidia and realtek free hardwares are definitely welcome. A high refresh rate display is a must have for gaming, but would be important too otherwise (it's ok tho if it isn't)

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Either it should game, or it should be something like a cheap "thin and light". I'm open to everything. If it is not capable of gaming, it should be cheap, because then I'll probably buy a desktop when I don't have to sell my kidney for a gpu. What I'm considering now is buying something like a pinebook pro (so really just the bare minimum), and waiting for the RX 6600M laptops to drop in price, maybe even be available as used.

US $1500, a laptop noob looking for something for music production and gaming

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 09:48 PM PDT

Looking for something to handle music production and gaming (in that order) and while I have had several PCs before, never a laptop. I do understand Apple is usually preferred for music production, but I'm not above getting an audio interface if I can get a better deal on the other hardware.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1500 (somewhat flexible), USD, planning to buy it in the US
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Sure
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Not sure if I know what form factor is. Battery life and performance are probably most clutch, build itself is less important (won't be moving around too much, not daily)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not really at all
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Bigger's better right? Although a smaller screen isn't a deal breaker.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Not currently planning to do video editing but wouldn't take it off the table. Photoshop and Pro Tools/Logic (or DAWs in general) are what I'm mainly looking for. As far as gaming, I love a lot of older games (Diablo 2, WoW, Baldur's Gate) so I don't need anything extremely beefy here - however, I'd still be able to run decent graphics on some more modern games (Witcher 3, GTA V, Overwatch, Divinity 2). Not looking to max them out or anything.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Mostly older games, I have a lot of catching up to do. Newer games I'd like to be able to run are Witcher 3, GTA V, Fallout 4 (wow these are really not "new" anymore are they XD). Med to high settings, 60fps preferable.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Not particularly. Don't really need the touch screen or finger print reader, not too concerned with the keyboard/trackpad (I'll likely be using a wireless mouse with it anyway).
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Like I mentioned, I'm very new to this world of computers so I'm not entirely sure what to be looking for/expect. This will mostly be used to record/mix some audio tracks in my basement, mostly as demos for me/bandmates, however, I do love my PC gaming so I'd like that to be an option as well. I'm also not sure how laptops handle another monitor or say, plugging in/streaming to a smart TV, so wanted to know how that might work as well. Oh, also storage is probably not that big of an issue (I assume I can plug in an external HDD). Anyway, thanks for taking a look! Let me know if you want any other info!

Looking for a gaming laptop that can also support photo and video editing ($1000-$1300, US)

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 05:48 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
I'd prefer $1000 USD but I'm willing to consider up to $1300 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No please
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
As far as form factor, I'm looking for a traditional laptop. Build quality is not terribly important. I'm looking to play more casual games with friends. Battery life isn't a huge factor, I'll almost always be near an outlet.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
If possible, I prefer something on the lighter and thinner side. I can compromise though.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
If anything, I would like something on the smaller side. Not sure if possible for mid-range gaming laptops.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I frequently use Clip Studio Paint, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Davinci Resolve, OBS Studio, and Silhouette Studio. I'd also like to get more into somewhat casual PC gaming.... Deep Rock Galactic, Knockout City, Overwatch etc.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Somewhat casual PC gaming.... Deep Rock Galactic, Knockout City, Overwatch, etc. I'm not very picky about FPS. As long as it's playable and still enjoyable.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
If possible, a num keypad and webcam. Those aren't dealbreakers. I do REALLY want built-in RGB (I know, I'm a sucker for it)

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Upgrading from a Surface Pro 3. Looking to explore more somewhat casual gaming options with friends. I'm willing to pay a little more if it means the laptop will stay up to date a little longer. I'd also like to purchase from a reputable place in case it needs to be fixed under warranty. Bonus points if I can pick it up at a Best Buy etc.

    Thanks for the help!

Don't need Anything fancy, just something solid for the price (at least 13"- USA -$600 Budget)

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 08:53 PM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $600

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Refurbished possibly, straight up used not really.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance is my main concern. It can be heavy, ugly, and have bad battery life. It doesn't need a touch screen or anything like that.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important whatsoever.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I prefer a better graphics card over the screen size, but I think at least 13", but 14"-15" would be neat.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Photo editing yes. Photoshop and then Light Room.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I'd love to be able to play Dark Souls 1 on it without an issue, but that's absolutely not a requirement. I know a laptop that could run the new Diablo 2 Ressurected will be way above my price range, but that's the only other game I could even think of. Again, it's not necessary for this laptop.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I think all I need in those terms are at least 2 USB ports. More would be nice but not required. It would be helpful to have an audio output/headphone jack as well.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm open to Mac or PC but I understand that I'd only be able to get used Macs in my price range, but if they were significantly better than the Windows laptops that I could get new, then I would be open to considering them.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
1300 EUR, I will buy it in Italy.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I prioritize performance, battery life, build quality, form factor
    • How important are weight and thinness to you?
      I don't care about them.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Bigger or equal than 15".
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I'm planning to play Call of Duty, The Binding of Isaac, GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2, and other triple-A games. I will be also using it for music editing, probably CAD, and most importantly programming.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      The higher the better.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive, or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      I'd love an RGB keyboard!

    Recommend a laptop for college

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 07:28 PM PDT

Hi there, im starting college in September and I need a new laptop.

I don't need anything in particular but i would like to be able to play the sims 4 on the laptop and maybe some indie games and such. And of course be able to get my college work done

But i really don't like chunky or laptops that are quite big in size so a thin and reasonable sized model would be desirable.

As im a student my budget is tight, and i wouldn't be able to afford an apple laptop so please don't recommend these models.. I would also i need a laptop that's durable and would last for about five years with no major issues.

Thanks everyone for your help!! So sorry if my expectations are too high for my needs and budget..
