    Simple Questions - June 03, 2021

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 05:00 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Am I the only one that really dislikes RGB?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 12:22 PM PDT

I have seen many build tutorials and it's almost always RGB, but I think why? Does it give an advantage or is it just as decor?

EDIT: If you can change it to black or white it's not too bad but I really don't like the rainbow look.

Is the RTX 3080 Ti really worth $1199? It's double the price of the RTX 3070 Ti, but is it double the performance? Is the RTX 3080 already more than enough for 4K?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 10:36 AM PDT

Does anyone know when the 3080/3080Ti founders are going to restock?

Get my new PC the Exact same as my Laptop

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 06:15 AM PDT

I have recently built a PC to replace my laptop and I need to get it the exact same (without doing the tedious move myself) as if I've just booted into my laptop. This means I would like to transfer everything to detail. All files the same, programs, settings, program settings and data etc.

Is there a program to do this?

    Thanks!

Memory is close to 100% after upgrading CPU

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 10:58 AM PDT

Hey y'all, I posted a while back about COD using 100% of my CPU and crashing at times. I just upgraded from a i5 6600k to i7 6700k and my CPU stays below 70% usage. But now I'm crashing and my memory is at 80-90%. This wasn't happening before. I have 16gb of 2400 RAM. Do I need to upgrade to higher speed RAM or just add another stick? Thank you :)

    PC sometimes fails to boot

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 12:46 PM PDT

Occasionally my PC fails to boot with Q-Code 02.

PC specs are as follows: -Motherboard is an ROG Crosshair VIII Hero -Ryzen 3700x -32GB 3600MHz G Skill Trident Z RAM - RTX 2070 Super

According to google it seems that Q-Code usually is power related. But I've noticed to fix it when it happens I need to reduce my RAM to 3400MHz or lower, let the PC boot, then go back into BIOS and change the D.O.C.P profile back to 3600MHz. Then it works fine for weeks. Then at some point it'll randomly fail to boot again and I have to do that all over again.

So is it just faulty RAM that can't run at its rated speed? Or could it be something else causing the issue?

Looking for a new PC Case to fit my new cooler Noctua NH-D15S

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 07:18 AM PDT

Hello. Due to terrible conditions on graphic card market, few months ago I bought a prebuilt PC https://www.ebuyer.com/1140204-alphasync-rtx-3070-amd-ryzen-7-16gb-ram-1tb-hdd-480gb-ssd-as-d5474 , in my opinion it was a great deal, its gone up in price by 200 pounds since I bought it. However I have noticed a few problems... its clear costs have been cut whenever possible, and I've experienced a number number of small issues. Never buying a prebuilt again!

Due to issues with very high CPU temperature at full load, I have replaced the original cooler with something better, Noctua NH-D15S. Unfortunately it does not fit in my case.

    List of parts currently used:
    AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
    Noctua NH-D15S
    16GB Vengeance LPX 3200MHz (2x8GB)
    Corsair 480GB Force MP510 M.2 NVMe
    Seagate 1TB BarraCuda
    NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 8GB
    Corsair 650W CV650
    ASUS PRIME B450M-A II

Sadly Noctua NH-D15S, is too big to fit in my case- right now I just have my pc running without the glass side, with cooler poking out a little. It looks hideous, I'd rather avoid dust gathering, and I'm worried about accidental damage.

I am looking to buy a new case. Airflow and simplicity of assembly are most important to me. Case should accommodate all the parts I'm currently using. I'd like to keep the price low, preferably below £100 ($140). However, if there is an exceptional, super amazing case, I am willing to spend a bit extra. Hard budget limit - £150 ($210)

last part I have to decide. Ram Speed.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 12:28 PM PDT

When is it useful to use a RAM 3600 cl 16 memory instead of 3200 cl 16 in intel processors.

I have seen a review and it seems to me that it is not useful.

Do you consider that it is not worthwhile to buy faster memories?

Is there something I'm not understanding? I am totally new in PC Bulding

    Thank you.

NR200 Build - AMD or Intel Version for mostly VR and Videocapture/cutting? Help would be greatly appreciated!

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 02:51 PM PDT

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I will mainly be in VRChat and other VR activities, while recording them via OBS.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I want to be futureproof atleast a little with whatever is coming to the VR space in the coming years. I gave up on buying the best possible GPU right now and will probably settle for a placeholder of some sort until I can get a top of the line card for MSRP again. The two build options should work with a top-of-the-line card later on, maybe a 3080ti/3090 or a 4000 card later.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

Right now I'd like to keep the budget under 3k, but could go up if absolutely necessary, or when a good card sells for lets say 1300-1500€. (Right now I don't want to overspend on cards, but am ready to pay when supply is better)

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Germany.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

So I have two builds I put together. One is intel based and one is AMD based. I will get an NVIDIA card most likely, and don't know if that makes any difference. I wanted to get your opinion on what might be a better fit - both builds would cost the same:

    Intel: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/rDLNht

    AMD: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/list/WVpvy4

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Regarding the cooler and fans: I thought that the slimmer fans for the upper and underside of the case would give the build a bit more breathing room. Bigger ones will probably fit too, but then it will be very flush together.

The Noctua cooler is marked as non-compatible by PCPartpicker but as many build guides on youTube and PcPartpicker show, it does fit (but only with the non-TG case that I will use). This is the vid I saw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSUK7p9qQnU

The Motherboards have been chosen purely because of their USB options. I can never get enough of those and those two seemed to have the most while still being under 300€

Best monitor and "docking setup" idea for a productivity/some-gaming laptop.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 11:04 AM PDT

I'm trying to build a more ergonomic setup for myself due to neck/back issues, but this post is specifically about monitor product recommendations and docking station product/setup.

Please let me know if I should be posting this somewhere else, hoping for some help.

    My laptop: I have an HP Pavilion 15-bc series laptop (12gb RAM, i5-6300HQ @ 2.3ghz quad-core, GeForce GTX 960M graphics, 1080p IPS 15.6" display. 1TB WD SSD).

Uses: I use it for some casual gaming (CS:GO, games usually around 5 years old but some newer, not very competitive), as well as work/productivity. I can't justify getting a desktop.

Objective: I want to have a nicely-placed monitor, probably a comfortable keyboard, and also my current speakers and mouse, all of which I can quickly plug in and disconnect from my laptop (and of course the powercord/charger).

    Questions:

    1. What is a good monitor for this? Something that my laptop can handle and will be fast enough while looking nice - maybe I need something at 144hz(?)[afaik recommended for casual gaming], probably 24".
    2. Is there a way to do this with just 1 or 2 wires/"adapters" or docking station? Something that monitor, keyboard, speakers, mouse (and maybe power) plug into, that in turn plugs right into the laptop?
    3. What keyboard would you recommend for this?

[I already have a 2.1 Klipsch speakers system that uses "aux" type cord to plug in and a G703 wireless mouse+Goliath mousepad. ]

Here's pics of my setup at the moment (been using the laptop as the monitor and keyboard [strains my shoulders/neck etc.] and it rests on an old laptop cooler).

Here's pics of my laptop's ports

    Thank you for any help

    Best wifi USB antenna?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 04:50 PM PDT

What should I look for when buying one? Most of the ones I've seen are just a single antenna. I foud some that are a little device connected by a cable like the TL-WN822N and the Tl-wn8200nd. Are those better? I mainly need somethin that can go through thick brick walls.

Decrease Performance After Bios Update 5900x + X570-i

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 09:59 AM PDT

    Quick question:

I updated my Asus X570-i motherboard from Bios 3202 to 3801 yesterday. Previously, rendering in Vray i was hitting 4.4ghz on all cores, I now only am able to get up to 4.375ghz. My cinebench score has also dropped about 200points from 21450 to 21200.

I have tried updating chipset driver, but it made no difference. All bios settings and PBO + Curve Optimizer are set to the same settings as before.

    Graphics card suddenly dies :(

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 04:32 PM PDT

    Hi everyone!

So last week I finally got all my components to build my new PC and the only component I was going to use from my old PC was my graphics card which is a GTX 1060 6GB. So everything went fine until I took out the graphics card from the old PC and cleaned it a bit by blowing away the dust and then installed it to the new PC and got no post. The fans of the GPU started to spin for a few seconds and then just stopped. So I took the GPU out of the new PC and put it back in the old PC again, no signal, fans spins for 2-3 seconds and then out. So I'm not sure how a GPU just decides to die by just moving it to another PC but I would love to know what I can do to do some troubleshooting on this GPU and how I can, if possible, fix it. Because right now I'm stuck with a GT 710 and 60hz is not fun :(

    Power Supply Question!

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 08:17 AM PDT

If I have a Corsair 750w Bronze PSU and I bought a Gigabyte 850w Gold PSU, am I able to keep the old cables plugged into my PC components and only change out the actual PSU itself, without hurting anything?

I dont want to cable manage all my cables again haha.

Or are the cables different for different wattage PSU's?

    Thanks!

Need help to decide wether to buy a new one or upgrade my current laptop.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 04:25 PM PDT

Hello, I own a Mid-2015 Macbook Pro with a 256 GB SSD. I just started a new job in IT, and although I'd love to buy a new laptop that runs Windows, I don't have the money for a new laptop and I, myself, am a 'use it until it's broken' kind of guy.

My thought process is running bootcamp on my mac and running windows there, but due to the size of my SSD this is only a temporary solution. I could upgrade the SSD to a 1TB SSD and run Windows and Mac OS side by side, and that'd be good, but it is an old laptop that is already showing signs of wear.

My second solution would be running bootcamp until I can get the money up to by a new laptop, but I'm just kind of hesitant because this one is working fine, only the battery is going out, and buying a 1TB SSD and a new battery would be cheaper than buying a new laptop.

Should I just save up? Or should I use my Mac until it drops dead? Or is there another solution entirely? Excited to hear your responses.

    Mixing Different RGB Brand Questions

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 04:23 PM PDT

Needed some help/clarification with my up and coming build about RGB Lighting.

I am planning on going with the Corsair 5000x with a Msi mag X570 tomahawk MOBO.

My question comes with how to go about setting up RGB with this case, and what the most efficient method is.

I was planning on going with these components:

    • Kraken Z73 AIO Cooler (with Display)
    • The 5000x's 3x iQue fans that come with the Case
    • Lian Lis 24-pin RGB strip
    • And 3x Lian Li UNI Fan SL

What is the best efficient way to get this set up? How do I go about this? Can I control this with one piece of software? Or will i be downloading software for each brands specific product? (I assume the AIO is separate for sure) Will this even work?

I don't need to mix and match exactly.. I just like these specific parts like the Z73 cooler and the way the UNI fans work.

    Help appreciated!

Can my rig take more internal storage?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 04:19 PM PDT

I got into PC gaming last year when COVID hit and started to stream some content. With all the videos and content creation, most of my PC is filled with that content and I don't want to start deleting stuff or moving it to external storage. Since I did not build this PC myself, I'm not sure if it can handle another internal drive. I'm looking for some advice on what options I have for internal memory I can move all this content to and free up space on my drive for new games so I don't have to juggle uninstalling games on Steam to free up space. Links to relevant products or YouTube videos for install would be a huge help! Thanks in advance.

My current specs (and I'm just copying them all)
    AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
    GeForce RTX 2070
    B450 AORUS PRO
    16GB Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO
    1 TB WD Blue SN550
