Slow downloads/uploads speeds with any win 10 PC on 1gbps fiber and LAN but 980+ speedtests Posted: 03 Jun 2021 09:05 AM PDT Hello, this is driving me crazy. I'm an IT admin, but this, I can't stand. Sorry it'll be long but I need to be precise but asking is my last chance, I'm not the only one, and English isn't my native language so sorry if I'm not always clear. To explain: I have a cat6 network, 1gbps everywhere in the house. Fiber optic to a converter to rj45 > archer c7v2 on ddwrt > cat6 to desktop, pihole dns on docker and recently a Unifi 6 for the wireless. To answer: - Yes cables changed/new/whatever - No, not a router or hardware thing - No it's not my ISP capping or any kind of QoS, I'll explain later why - No it's not from the servers - Yes everything have been rebooted - Yes tried on different computers - No it's not the load on the connection or the ISP - Yes I tried with only the computer - Yes I tried without any "tech things" like no pihole no ddwrt... - Yes I tried without antivirus or other protection - Yes I reinstalled nic drivers or tried older ones THE ISSUE: Since Windows 10 I think, there is a really weird and unexplained issue. Fresh install, good drivers, updates an so on. For a few days, it works perfectly. Speed tests at 980+ non stop, night and day, and downloads at awesome speeds. Residential is dedicated wired up to 8gpbs to everyone so it has plenty of headroom. LAN transfer are fast too (to my servers for example) And then, out of nowhere, it seems to cap at 3mB/s except for the speed tests and some other network usage still at 980+ . I noticed it usually comes after a windows update. Any of them. After months (really) of tests and research, the only working solution I've found was with TCPoptimizer.exe. So everytime I noticed the speeds were slow, I ran the software, reboot and BOOM, good for days/months until an update (or sometimes even without) It really seems to be a windows driver or TCP optimisation which is really bad or screwed because I can dual boot with any Linux or Hackintosh on my desktop and the speeds are good. I have a Thinkpad t460, Windows 10 too. It has the same issue but TCPoptimizer still fixes it. Now, this solution doesn't work anymore on my desktop. We have a MacBook M1, full speeds. Server on Ubuntu : full speeds Old server on Debian : full speeds The Thinkpad: full speeds (untill it breaks) Phones : full speeds on wifi I even noticed that on the same computer, my windows VM do the same, and TCPoptimizer IN the VM fixes it. (but the host is still slow trololol). I can reproduce the same issue, new VM, wait a few days, and boom slow speeds. I have an esxi on a proliant, windows 10 VMs do the same :) I today tried NetAdapterRepair from bleepingcomputers. It fixes something a bit, because I know go to 11-12mBps but after a few reboot or whatever, down to 3mBps. It's always between 2.8 and 3.2mBp/s, on every Windows 10 I have. Always that speed, download/upload, LAN, different web servers, always that precise speed. Oh, and usually, when it breaks, it also breaks for lan transfer, which got the same low speeds so it's not from the WAN. Now, when I use TCPoptimizer, LAN are at 980+ speeds but not internet. I have a VPN to connection to my parents place for helping them easier, usually I have full speeds, but now, it's fast for I don't know, some protocols for example, but not for LAN transfer from explorer. (But fast on my local) So why? Why the hell? Where does it come from? I'm litteraly without ideas left. I am absolutely very frustrated as I have IT knowledges, a full cat6 wired house, 1gbps connection LAN/WAN and now an absolutely insane wifi with the Unifi, a custom build able to do anything from games to virtual machines, docker services etc.. and stuck with 3mBps speeds. Notice too, when it works, speed tests go directly to 980+ and the needle is stuck and wants more. When it's "broken", it goes there but pretty slowly, and up and down from like 500 to 980+ for example. Ah yes, and things like steam, or Nvidia for example, goes around 20mBps, but normally I am at around 120mBps everywhere. (Still depends of the servers of course) Sorry for that huge post and if sounding frustrated or stupid but I spend my days trying everything and I'm a bit tired now. Thank you for everyone reading everything and giving any advice/tips! Edit : I have a killer integrated card, on a MSI H270 gaming M3, but only the driver, not the QoS thing software [link] [comments] |
Getting Online with ONT in Bridged Mode Posted: 03 Jun 2021 05:49 PM PDT So long story short I am having issues getting online with my modem in Bridged Mode
LAN1 is set to bridged mode on my gateway. Router(WAN) is plugged into Gateway(LAN1). After my ISP switched me to Bridged Mode I have a static IP instead of using DHCP. My immediate thought was fill in IP, Gateway Address, Netmask, and VLAN tag from Gateway on Router. I also tried resetting my router and letting it pick its own defaults. Any ideas? ISP just hung up on me with no info once it was in bridged mode. [link] [comments] |
Cisco Serial Numbers, why do people cover/hide them? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 06:05 PM PDT I recently got my hands on a 1100 series Cisco ISR. When shopping for it on the second hand market I noticed many sellers cover/hide the serial numbers on the devices. Why is that? Are they connected to a Cisco account or something like that? How do I go about starting from a clean config, preferably without wiping any licences that may be installed on the device? Is there a chance these licenses have to be reinstalled/reentered after a factory reset? Which, I assume involves pushing the small reset pinhole at the back of the device. I haven't had time to touch/power on the device and play around with it yet but want to do some research before doing so. Highly appreciate any feedback on any of the questions above! Posted: 03 Jun 2021 06:17 PM PDT Hey everyone, I have entertained the idea of moving into a RV full time and living in a park that has available Wi-Fi. I would like to setup a router within the rv (with a router level vpn setting). What exactly do I need to connect wireless to the park Wi-Fi, am I looking for a bridge? Budget is open, max I would say is $300-400. Really looking for a high quality router, Wi-Fi 5 or better, gig Ethernet ports etc Any recommendations? [link] [comments] |
Using iPhone hotspot for backup internet (seamless switchover)? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 05:38 PM PDT I'm trying to figure out how to use my phone's wifi hotspot as a backup during moments when my ISP's cable modem is being unreliable. I want it to run through my existing network to feed all my devices (a desktop via ethernet cable, a laptop via wifi, and an ipad via wifi). I read one solution is to buy a "wireless bridge" and plug that into the router's WAN port when the ISP goes down. This seems nice and easy, but I don't like the fact that it's an all or nothing solution. When the ISP is down it's usually only for a few seconds to minutes (always at the worst possible time of course) so either I wait for it to fail or use it all day. Then I discovered dual-WAN routers. One port for the ISP modem, and the other for the wireless bridge. Presumably whenever I want a rock solid connection, I'd just enable the hotspot and the equipment would magically switch to it if/when the ISP modem drops offline. This would be ideal. I'm fairly technical and willing to wade into enterprise networking stuff if absolutely necessary (although I prefer not to), and my budget is a few hundred USD if that's what it takes. My main goal is to get this all setup and forget about it for the next 5 years while I enjoy 100% reliable internet.....that would be incredible! What would you advise? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2021 11:57 AM PDT Hi there - I have an ATT Uverse account, and am utilizing the BGW210 Gateway to currently provide my wireless internet throughout my apartment unit. However, my unit has pre-wired ethernet ports, which I believe all route to a central location in the closet where the gateway currently sits. I have tried plugging in a CAT5 cable into basically any number of combinations of where it could go in this panel, but have not been able to get an active connection when I have tried to test it. Here is an image of the various options. Here are closer pics. I am not a networking expert by any means, but based on the research I have done, it seems I may need a switch, but I don't want to go buy one unless that's truly the case. I am happy to provide any more details beyond this and answer any questions...I would have provided more info up front but due to my lack of expertise am not quite sure what information might be helpful. Thank you for any help that might be able to be provided! [link] [comments] |

What is the most efficient way to use modem mode on VM SuperHub3? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 07:41 PM PDT When this is switched to modem mode can I connect SH3 via Ethernet cable directly to my gaming setup. Will this offer better or worse performance than connecting SH3 to a good router and then that router to my gaming set up via Ethernet? [link] [comments] |
Tired of Velop issues, go Eero or stand-alone? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 07:29 PM PDT I have a Velop WHW03v1 2 node system with Verizon gigabit service in a 1500 sq ft house. Nothing but issues with stability and devices wanting to connect to the primary node instead of the one it's closest to. Been through tons of troubleshooting and ready to ditch it. Should I go with a stand-alone dedicated router or try the Eero mesh? Lots of smart home devices, hue, nest, Alexa, HomePod, etc and strictly use streaming for tv. Any recommendations are welcome [link] [comments] |
Vlans for home use (am I overthinking this?) Posted: 03 Jun 2021 07:25 PM PDT I don't have any interest in most IoT devices. However, we recently were gifted some Phillips Hue lights and I'd like to keep the hub off the main network. I've read the best way to do this is to create vlans and isolate the lights. Ideally, I really just want to make certain that the Hub isn't phoning home or accessing network information it shouldn't be. Right now I'm looking at spending hundreds of dollars on Omada gear, which in itself seems to raise security concerns (lacks 2FA) that seem to defeat the entire purpose of my overall goal. I just want to be able to control some lights without being worried about the security of the Hub. My router (AX12) does not appear to have any way to stop the Hubs from phoning home. Would I be better off with a different router instead? [link] [comments] |
Router with fast USB port? Or cheap NAS alternative? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 06:46 PM PDT It seems most hard drives attached to routers end with with VERY slow data writes. I'm guessing this is just a cpu limitation on routers, and am looking for options that might not be slow. Alteratively I suppose I could attach a NAS ($$$) or something like an Odroid HC1 ($) to run OpenMediaVault, but these always have felt like a waste of money to me and just add another device. AirPort Time Capsule Replacement Posted: 03 Jun 2021 06:33 PM PDT It looks like I'll have to replace my 6 year old AirPort Time Capsule since the tech is from 2012 and smart accessories see to have a hit or miss. I currently use the built in hard drive as NAS, not for time Machine backups. It seems a wireless router and Synology DS118 should work out okay. My question is with these "mesh" routers (still reading into them) can I have main router connected to the cable modem in the kitchen (where the AP TC is currently resides) and then have another mesh router (secondary ones are called nodes?) in my closet with a DS118 plugged into it's Ethernet port? Is that possible or would the NAS have to be plugged into the main router that is connected to the modem? If I can do what I'm suggesting, it would be great because xfinity had to run cable to our home and since the builder didn't put in any coaxial jacks in the house (built 1989) the installer just drilled a hole in the wall near the TV. We've since cut cable TV 5 years ago, but the modem is 10ft from that only jack. [link] [comments] |
Parental control on Prosumer equipment Posted: 03 Jun 2021 02:35 PM PDT It's amazing how all these companies don't integrate parental controls on their 'prosumer' equipment. TP link Omada (Tether). Netgear Orbi Pro Sxk80 (Circle). Unifi (meh..)<— my current home setup. UDMPro >24 Poe switch > 3 nanoHds >4 camera's. With everything happening with unifi, thinking of switching, then made me think of now parental controls, especially now with summer break. Aruba instant on; Ruckus; are others I was considering but now I'm pondering something easier. Set it and forget it. There's eero Pro I guess. Maybe I'm overwhelmed and over thinking this. After 5 years of Unifi and upgrades/firmware and now there vulnerabilities. Ready to just change and make home life easier. Working IT all day. Home life should be easier. Just want full coverage and yes, 3 AP's are more than enough. Thoughts. Suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2021 06:01 PM PDT I have a friend building a new home looking for advice on setting it up for high speed wireless and wired connections. What do you recommend in the way of wiring rooms (i.e. cat6 connections behind wall mounted TVs, on walls at outlet height, how many per room, etc.) I am also curious to know what type of APs people would recommend. Lastly considering he will have a decent number of network connections (guessing 20-30), what type of network switch is recommended? Thanks again and my apologies in advance if I omitted any critical information. [link] [comments] |
Which brands tend to have the 'best' (most configurable?) factory firmware? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 05:55 PM PDT I just restored the factory firmware on my Linksys WRT1200AC (which might be dying) and a TP-Link C7 v2 that I've had in my closet for awhile. I've enjoyed getting to know (a little) DD-WRT and OpenWRT--but I really think they're overkill for my future needs. After restoring the factory firmware on both above devices, the TP-Link seems to have a much more elaborate set of options than the Linksys. Made me curious what consumer brands of routers tend to have the most configurable factory firmware? It might steer me towards some or away from others when it's time to upgrade (or replace). Configuring a new router without removing the original router Posted: 03 Jun 2021 05:46 PM PDT I'm building a new house and slowly gathering all the bits and pieces I want for the networking side of things. In my current rental I have an isp supplied netcomm nf18acv and I've just bought a mikrotik rb2011 that I want to play around with to see what I think of router os and iwant to leave the netcomm router supplying everyone's internet for the monent to keep the family happy. How to I connect the 2 together to achieve this? [link] [comments] |
Detailed info: what router settings should I be adjusting to ensure 1 Gbps speeds on my new plan? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 05:39 PM PDT In the process of moving, we are upgrading from a 60 Mbps connection to a 1 Gbps plan at our new place (and it's almost half the cost of our previous plan, amazingly). The installation tech got everything connected within 15 minutes, but when I tested the speed on my laptop I got disappointing results when connecting to both the modem directly and via the router (both Cat6a ethernet cables). The huge discrepancy between the router and the modem tells me there are some key settings I need to adjust on the router, which I expected. I've outlined information below that I collected. Sorry in advance for length- I wanted to follow the sub submission rules and be as thorough as possible to make it easier for anyone who tries to help (thank you in advance!) Key details
Speed test results:
What I've figured out needs to change, according to my research:
Lastly, I went through my current router config profile. Here are some key features I already have set up which I expect would carry over to the new setup:
I know how to read the modem diagnostics page to identify issues with signal-to-noise ratio, up/downstream power, etc. which I can talk to the ISP about, but that's beyond the scope of this thread. My current (60 Mbps) security configuration is also such that any security tests I have run all come back totally clean, with no exposed ports or anything like that. All that said, what key settings should I be looking at/adjusting on the router to get the most of my plan? Thank you for reading and thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Does POE injector need to support an [X]Base-T standard? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 05:37 PM PDT Hi all, I've hit a critical mass of 802.11ax/WiFi 6 devices in my home and I'm starting to plan my upgrade path from AC/Wifi 5. I'm looking at access points with 2.5GBase-T ports. There aren't a ton of switches/routers with 2.5G PoE ports (and they seem to be at a premium where they exist) so I'm looking at just getting (an) injector(s) as needed. I'm not super familiar with injectors; do I need to find injectors that specifically support 2.5GBase-T? Or is it enough that they support the physical RJ45 interface? TIA. [link] [comments] |
I can't access an external hard drive I connected to my router Posted: 03 Jun 2021 05:34 PM PDT I brought a new Seagate 2TB HDD. My intention is to plug it into the router(Linksys EA8300) and allow everyone in the network to use it. I plugged it in. went to the router webpage and I see that the router recognize it. It gave an assigned address to access it locally and via FTP. Neither one of them works. I tried with a smaller flash drive. The router sees it but I can't access it. The router firmware is up-to-date and I'm running Windows 10. And I tried with my computer, my laptop and my tablet. Nothing. [link] [comments] |
Wireless Mesh AP with VLAN tagging? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 01:30 PM PDT Hey all, I currently own an Amplifi HD kit that has kinda reached the end of it's usefulness due to the lack of guest network VLAN tagging. I'm using it in bridge mode, as I have a pfSense box for routing. I'm wondering what I should buy to replace it. I'd like to stay with a mesh network, but also need multiple SSIDs with VLAN tagging. I want to stay away from anything that requires running cabling through walls (I'm in a rental) - it looks like this excludes Ubiquiti stuff? Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
What should I do with home networking security? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 05:08 PM PDT I'm totally new to this area and I only have been using just one AP for my entire life without any other add-ons at all. I've just moved to a house where I have a switch Ruckus ICX 7150-C12P and AP (Ruckus 320). I have a bunch of IoT devices (Ring, Thermostat and Alexa). Might add more in the future. So, the system is pretty standard. I've read it somewhere that the IoT devices should be separated out to its own VLAN and some people suggest separating Work and Personal VLANs as well. What else should I be doing? The house is pretty small so AP covers the entire area that I want so I won't need a mesh system. What are the best practices here that people are doing for security? Trouble with Router, Asus RT-AX55U Posted: 03 Jun 2021 04:50 PM PDT Bought the router in the title, Asus RT-AX55U, to replace some existing routers at my parents' place. When connecting the Asus to the cable that their existing router is using I get no signal from the modem. The cable that I'm using here goes directly from the modem, which sits in their bedroom, through the wall, and out the living room. It works just fine with the existing router they have there, but for some reason the Asus doesn't get any signal from it. They also have another shitty router in their kitchen, same deal, the cables goes directly from the modem, through the wall, and out the kitchen. Here as well it works just fine with the existing router but the Asus doesn't find any connection and complains that the cable is unplugged. What I've found is that connecting the router directly to their modem using any other loose cable, such as the cable in the box and others they have laying around, then it works perfectly. This has left my dad and I to suspect it could be the cables running through the walls that aren't functioning properly, he ran them through the walls maybe 15 years ago. It's just that why then are the other routers not having any issues? I know the details here are pretty vague, and apologies for that, but has anyone experienced anything similar or think they know what could be causing this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2021 04:42 PM PDT I have a macbook that's plugged into a docking station with a couple hdds, and on the other side of the room a windows laptop that I want to use only to download torrents and control from the mac. What's the easiest way to remote desktop into this windows computer from the macbook to operate the torrent files/organize them? zerotier or remote.it or the regular windows method? Then when that's done, I'd want to transfer to the attached mac enclosure without first hitting the mac ssd because I don't want to wear out the ssd if I keep this setup for years, I think it's already at 70tb until I realized I shouldn't download to my system drive and that it will die at around 500tb. appreciate any help/responses.
