Ubuntu Is Saying I am Connected to Ethernet, but I Have Wireless and Nothing is Going Through

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 12:03 PM PDT

I am running Ubuntu 20.04 with wireless internet. The connection symbol in the upper right is saying I am connected to ethernet (which I am not), but when I click it, it shows wireless in the dropdown menu, like it is supposed to. It also says there is no connection. The password is correct, it says I am connected, but nothing internet related works. I would love to hear your guys feedback. Thanks!

Here is a screenshot of the issue:

Unable to recover data stored in Windows 10 StickyNotes through Linux (dual boot).

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 02:43 AM PDT

I should probably have posted on some Windows subreddit but windows users hate Linux more then Linux users hate Windows.

I had some lines of text stored in Sticky Notes in Windows 10. A few days back, Windows suddenly stopped booting up and my attempts to repair it failed. Unfortunately, I hadn't backed up the Stickynotes data elsewhere. I have been running Linux (Xubuntu) and Windows in dualboot so I tried accessing the data stored in the stickynotes through the file manager. Apparently, data we write and save in stickynotes is stored in a sqlite database called plum.sqlite. So, I installed sqlitebrowser to access the stickynotes data but it shows the database as being completely empty. I have tried whatever I could and come up with deadends. Some help on retrieving the stickynotes would be appreciated.

TLDR - Unable to boot up Windows 10. Need help to retrieve data stored on Windows10 Stickynotes through Linux dualboot.

Is Vim just in the terminal?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 12:10 PM PDT

If Vim is just in the terminal, what are the pros and cons of Vim and something like VS Code? Why do people consider Vim to be better than other IDEs. Also, is there a way to run Vim on something like an IDE instead of the terminal?

Executing Flatpaks in a "normal" bin style

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 01:08 PM PDT

So I like the idea of flatpaks and how they typically provide more up to date software than what I get from apt.

However sometimes I want to connect a flatpak application to another software, and that software is expecting a 'normal' executable, the type that is found in a /bin folder. Flatpak uses "flatpak run" and a reverse domain name, which is quite different and has given me trouble.

For example Flutter SDK asks for an environment variable leading to a Chrome executable. And Steam ROM Manager expects emulators to have an executable to be ran with no prefixes (such as "flatpak run").

I know I can define aliases in ZSH, but is there a more shell-agnostic way I can define a one-word shortcut to running flatpaks? So that I can type chromium instead of flatpak run org.chromium.Chromium

    USB: device or resource busy

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 02:32 PM PDT

So I'm trying to format my USB drive and while trying to do the "wipefs" command, it ended up showing an error message written "probing initialization failed: device or resource busy". Does anyone know how to make it "unbusy"?

How to monitor internet speed over time?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 02:23 PM PDT

Someone I know told me to use smokeping, but it seems like it's too complicated for a beginner to use.

I'm using openSUSE Tumbleweed if that matters.

    Reinstalling Linux makes Windows unbootable

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 01:42 PM PDT

I have Windows and Linux installed on separate drives, the primary drive is Linux and when I feel like gaming I exit the grub menu and it boots into Windows. This works fine until I decide to move to a different distro. After reinstalling the Linux drive I always lose the boot option for Windows. Exiting Grub doesn't work and in the BIOS menu there is no option to even set the 2nd drive in the boot order at all. This has happened on every switch going from Manjaro to Fedora to Ubuntu to Neon. The only fix I have is just to wipe and reinstall Windows which i a huge pain in the arse. I think it's probably a Windows boot manager or grub thing as I can still read the Windows disk from linux and everything is still there.

Any info / advice is welcome

    Cheers

Should I install Ghidra using the Pop Shop?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 01:35 PM PDT

I'm new to reverse engineering, but I was wondering whether or not I should download Ghidra using Pop Shop, as I've seen it on there, or install it through their website. Is it safer to install it one way or the other, or does it not matter at all. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I just want to be safe considering it's from the NSA and it deals with malware analysis. Thank you in advanced!

Why are there so many options to choose from when opening a file?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 12:58 PM PDT

I just created a new document on mint, and upon clicking it I have four options: Run in terminal, Display, Cancel, and Run.

    Cancel is self explanitory.

But what's the difference between Run in terminal, Display, and Run?

I checked to see and the file has "Allow executing file as a program" checked.. And I can't seem to uncheck it. Is this related to why I;m given four options when I click on the file. Is this even the proper file type if I just want to write a text file?

    Thanks in advance.

Linux app space is a mess. Tor browser.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 12:40 PM PDT

Is it just me or is the entire Linux app space a flipping mess? Snap? Deb? Flatpak? Appimage? I'm on bodhi Linux and I just want to install the Tor browser every guide I'm finding uses a different installer and it's broken can someone just help me get the Tor browser installed on the latest version of Bodhi?

I'm not a noob to this I've been running Linux since you had to compile from source but I'm completely confused by this.

Unable to figure out why I can't install this program.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 11:59 AM PDT

I'm trying to install this https://github.com/Jermolene/TiddlyDesktop/releases (the Fourteenth release for Linux64) and I just can't seem to get it running. It's not a conventional installation, it just requires unzipping and then running nw as an executable. The problem is that I get the following error:

    Could not display "/medial/veracrypt1/TiddlyDesktop-linux62-v0.0.14/nw".

I'm trying to store it in an encrypted volume, but this isn't the cause of the problem as the problem persists if I try to store the file and run nw in my Documents file on my main drive.

I followed the installation instructions from the maker of TiddlyDesktop:

Unzip into a folder and run TiddlyWiki.app or nw.exe and for Linux nw

Another guide corroborates that the installation for Linux should be that simple:

On Linux, you just need to unzip the file, go into the TiddlyDesktop-someversion folder it contains, and run the nw executable.

Any help figuring out this puzzle would be greatly appreciated.

    Help needed for clean install

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 11:51 AM PDT

Hi, I'm planning to do a clean install of endeavour os I have already created a live usb and tested it out in the live session. I have two questions regarding the installation is anyone can provide the solution for them it will be great help.

    1. I have some pretty important files stored in the D and F drive. Since I don't have any external harddisk and the files are pretty big in size I can just move them in pendrive. So, what will be the best thing to do here to save the file and make a clean install as well??

    2. While in live session, I noticed that bluetooth is not working and there is no option to connect bluetooth device. How it can be fixed ?

I installed the Snap store on Debian to see what kind of applications it has. Now I downloaded some themes from snap store but I can't find a way to apply them. How do I apply the themes downloaded from snap store? I also got some apps downloaded from the snap, perhaps it can be done on those?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 07:43 AM PDT

OS: Debian bullseye, wayland, gnome 3.38.

I checked the settings of bitwarden (downloaded from snap) and the themes didnt show up there. I checked gnome tweaks appearance and themes didn't appear there as well.

ANy ideas how I can apply these themes?

Focus on terminal using keyboard shortcut?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 11:16 AM PDT

I am just starting to move from Windows to Ubuntu and one of the painful things I cannot solve is that I cannot focus on the terminal window using a keyboard shortcut. I tried looking for information online but only found posts that are 8-10 years old. So I thought... Why not ask a fresh question to see what's out there at the moment.

So what would be a good way to do this in 2021?

On Pop OS, on my System Monitor, it says I have 8 CPUs, when my computer only has 4 cores. So what do these CPUs that the system in monitoring over mean?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 09:51 AM PDT

I'm currently using my dad's old work laptop (Lenovo L480) and I installed Pop OS on it. When I checked the Resources tab under System monitor, it was showing 8 CPUs. However, the computer I'm using only has 4 cores. I was wondering if these 8 CPUs were the threads, or if something else is going on. Thank you in advanced!

    MBP user moving to Linux

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 09:32 AM PDT

    Hi there folks

As of right now I'm using MBP but after getting accustomed to Linux thanks to my work and i kinda want to fully invest in Linux eco-system since to my taste MacOs is kinda limiting, It's a great OS nonetheless. My idea so far is to buy Legion 5 w/ Ryzen 7 + GTX 1660Ti/RTX 3060 and install Linux (Ubuntu is my choice rn, but I might change later) and Windows for some work application and games , So it's a dual-boot setup. Even-though the majority of the time I will be using Linux.

I was wondering if anyone would like to share their experience. Pros and specifically cons/issue since i might learn a thing or two from you guys. After some research i will feel at home when using at Linux for my workflow since i come from a Software Dev perspective but my biggest concern is the software driver (GPU, CPU, Mousepad, and etc) which i heard is be a deal breaker. Do you think Lenovo Legion with Ryzen processor will fit with Linux well? Any feedback is welcomed

    Thanks in advance !
