Should I buy an RTX 30XX-powered laptop right now, or hold off for better ones?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 10:36 PM PDT

I currently have an Asus X571GT right now which purchased back in 2019. It looks sleek and professional for a laptop, and has a 1650, so I went for it.

Now, I am really wanting to look for other options as this laptop still doesn't handle some of the games I play, like Apex Legends and other Triple-A games.

I am currently eyeing these following laptops (in order):

    • Asus TUF Dash F15 (3060)
    • Acer Nitro 5 (2021, 3060)
    • MSI GF65 (3060)

I can maybe dish out around $1,300USD maximum for a laptop. The funds will primarily come from me selling my current laptop, gaming monitor (24G2E), and other stuff.

I will use the laptop for college, mainstream games (Apex Legends, TF2, Minecraft, etc.), hosting private Minecraft servers for friends, and some bit of photo and video editing at the side.

Should I wait for upcoming gaming laptops which are noticeably better value for the money, or just go for the ones I listed?

I am REALLY tempted to buy these now because any of the choices above is an upgrade, but I am still considering things like features (Wi-fi 6, RAM slots, NVMe slots, etc.) and aesthetics (sleek, minimalist design).

Laptop suggestions of similar price or specification are welcome!

I want to buy a laptop for uni

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 08:34 AM PDT

I am studying electrical and computer engineering and my budget is somewhere below 800€.

    Specs that I want :

    • cpu : i5 / ryzen 5
    • storage : at least 500gb SSD
    • non gaming : I am not so sure if gaming laptopts are worth it ( less battery, more noice , more weight). Not gonna lie the GTX 1650 Ti that some laptops offer is kind of tempting.
    • screen :15.6 " or bigger
    • OS : windows

I did my reaserch and I was originally planing to buy a Dell Inspirion or Vostro. Then I did some more reaserch and found out there were many more visually pleasing options. This is going to be my main pc.

How shall I do with exposed wire of the power cord of my thinkpad t400?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 02:19 PM PDT

The power cord of my thinkpad t400 has a place of exposed wires. Here is a picture of the power cord's specifications and exposed wires https://imgur.com/T1Wef0y.jpg

    Is it easily reparable?

If looking for a replacement, what specifications of power cord shall I look for? Its specifications include input 100-240v, 2.5-0.5A, and 50/60hz, and output 20v, 4.5A and 90w. Are the output specifications the only ones to match? Must they be matched exactly?

It's an old laptop, and I hope to continue using it with a power cord that suits the laptop, or a universal power cord that can work with it . Thanks.

    Thoughts on this laptop please?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 02:17 PM PDT

    Greetings..

    I recently started Web Development.

Currently working on my PC. The PC is not in good shape. It does not perform good for a job like this...

I'm looking for a laptop that can do the job perfectly...

This is the laptop I have in mind:

    Acer Aspire 5 - Ryzen 5 4500U - 16GB SDRAM DDR4 - 512GB SSD - Windows 10 OS - 1920x1080 FHD - Integrated Radeon GPU - Holds about 10-15[hrs] battery - Good price for the parts (500€ / around 550$ or less)

Overall, the laptop is amazing, has so much RAM and storage..

One thing that keeps me back from buying it is the CPU.

I'm not that experienced in AMD parts, so I need a little help.

Is this CPU (R5 4500U) good for Frontend apps, and Backend as well?

Should i search better CPU, but less RAM?

Is Intel bettet than AMD for Web Dev & Software Dev?

Should i search for more RAM, but weaker CPU?

I would love to hear thoughts for this laptop from other experienced programmers or similar...

    Thanks in advance. -Phill

Laptop suggestion for programming and other general use.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 12:57 PM PDT

Looking for a laptop for programming/general use like watching movies, listening to music. I have a desktop so I won't be gaming on this, and would prefer a laptop without a discrete GPU so as to not have it run hotter than necessary and reduce battery life.

    Preferred specs:
    16gb RAM

    512gb SSD (nvme or m2 i don't care)

10th/11th gen intel or ryzen 7 4x/5x series

    >250 nits screen

I would prefer not to buy HP or Acer laptops.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $900-$1200
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      Not opposed to any kind
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
< 3.5 lbs if possible and relatively thin
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14 preferred, 15 maximum
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
No - and I speciically don't want a laptop with a discrete GPU. Either AMD APU or intel igp is fine.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I would prefer a track pad that has physical left and right click buttons, but this isn't a dealbreaker
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'd like a decent screen. > 250 nits if possible. Other desires: 10th/11th gen intel or 4x/5x ryzen 7, 16gb ram (DDR4 if possible) and 512gb ssd.

Laptop crashed, any ideas to fix the blow?

Laptop crashed, any ideas to fix the blow?

The other day I dropped my beloved laptop on the ground and it must have hit the left corner, in fact in the corner there are signs of trauma from the swollen plastic, to the laptop it seems that nothing happened luckily, everything works before, but as you can see from the photo there is a small sharp part a bit pointed that I can not bend because it is too hard, do you have any idea how I can do to eliminate that piece? also because when I put my hand on it is a bit sharp.

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 11:38 AM PDT

I mostly love the design of thinkpad laptops but I hate the fact that they have too much logo on them (even more of a problem with X1E). Anything that has similar specs and design but with less logo?

Looking at spending around $600 for personal laptop

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 11:11 AM PDT

Hi all! So I am moving across the country. Yay new job! As a going away present I am being given a $600 budget to get a new laptop. I would like a decent size screen, 15"+ and I need it to run excel files with scripts in it smoothly. That's pretty much all I NEED it for. I mean I play some games too on xbox so I don't need it for gaming or anything but playing basic games on it would be nice too. Was thinking HP or Dell, but was just told to look into the Microsoft surfaces as well? Any suggestions? I'll answer any questions too!

    Buying laptop parts

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 11:07 AM PDT

Hello all! I'm looking to purchase 2 MXM 880m graphics cards for my laptop to run in SLI and I'm finding with all the bigs(Amazon, eBay) that they all ship from China and won't be here for 1-2 months, I was also told to be leery when buying them because not everything is as advertised and if I'm dropping 500+$ on 2 used cards I want to get them from a trusted source. Any recommendations?

    Slower FPS after upgrading

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 11:01 AM PDT

Recently, I upgraded one of my laptops storage, from 1TB SSHD to 2TB SSHD (Both Seagate).

I noticed that after upgrading and clean reset, the laptop reported lower FPS in multiple games despite same graphics options ( eg. Destiny 2, Siege).

Is it normal for it to do so like the new storage is warming up or something?

Trying to Buy My Gf a New Laptop

    Posted: 02 Jun 2021 07:01 AM PDT

Title says it all. My girlfriend has an incredibly old ASUS X401A with Intel Celeron 1000M CPU and only 4GB of RAM. It's been really slow and starting to crash over the most basic tasks so I figured we could split the cost of a new 1 for her. Her usage is very general. Only uses it for email, web browsing, YouTube, occasional spreadsheets, and downloading her music (whole library less than 50GB). With that in mind, I was thinking of getting her something with 16GB of RAM and a 500GB storage. Looking for some opinions on whether she needs that much RAM or not as I've found some pretty good 8GB options. I was also wondering if the Dell Inspiron laptops are any good? I was just looking at the Inspiron 14 7000 with an 11th Gen Core i5-1135G7, 8GB RAM, and a 256GB m.2 but not sure if they're a solid laptop at the moment. I had 1 back in college and hated it.
