Do laptops provide more value? Or am I just crazy?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 12:42 PM PDT

I know the general consensus is that PCs provide more value but when looking at entry level laptop specs you'll often get more bang for your buck. Trying to get a PC with the same specs and similar monitor will often end up costing more. I'm no expert. Am I missing something? Is there something else holding laptops back? When you start getting into the thousands the PCs dominance starts to show but I can't help but wonder why it takes so long for the difference to really show. Can anybody explain?

Again I'm no expert. All I own is an old Hp laptop that gets the job done but I'm just interested. I was thinking that maybe when people say that's desktops provide more value they're referring to the fact that you can upgrade it down the line and don't have to start from scratch.

What's the best gaming laptop for competitive play?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 03:45 PM PDT

The budget is $2,000-$2,300. I play first-person shooters and am looking for the best-performing laptops on the market. I have my eye on the Asus Rog g15 or the Aorus 15g. Any recommendations would help.

1st time getting a laptop, worrying temperatures when charging.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 08:08 AM PDT

I just got an Asus Zenbook 14...

    https://store.asus.com/us/item/202010AM150000001

...and when idle the laptop sits around 35c. While skyping it can hover around 40-50c so it seems normal under these circumstances. But last night I while charging it I was installing a small 500mb game and during installation the cpu temp reached a max of 93c. It didn't stay there for long as it was jumping from 70-80 during installation but this is worrying.

I know that charging a laptop will increase the Temps and the zenbook is an ultra slim laptop so cooling isn't as optimal, but is this normal? Would the combination of charging the laptop while installing a small game really justify 93c?

When I unplugged the charger and played the game the Temps hovered around 45-50 so it was only under those specific circumstances it reached such high Temps.

Is this to be expected with such a slim laptop or is there possibly an issue with mine?

I currently have a 4 years old desktop:

    -Intel core I5 7400, 3.00 GHz

    -Monitor ASUS 24" VG248QE 144 hz

I need space, so i have to sell the desktop and get a 17" gaming notebook. What do you recommend? I want a better notebook than my current desktop. Budget, 1000-1500 USD.

Should I upgrade SSD or Ram?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 03:22 PM PDT

Long story short, I'm a university students (bio major) so while I don't use a lot of 'heavy' programs such as Photoshop, I use a lot of Microsoft programs, chrome tabs and statistical program. Recently the programs such as webex and chrome keeps crashing so I thought that I should upgrade my laptop, but I don't really have a budget to do both. My current ram usage with only chrome open is at 80%+.

My laptop is Asus A407U, with 4GB DDR4 Ram, 256GB SSD, Intel core i5 8th gen processor and Intel uhd graphics 620.

Is the current 256GB SSD enough? And if I choose to upgrade only my ram, is 8GB ram sufficient?

    Laptop Suggestions

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 11:29 AM PDT

I desperately need a new laptop. I've been using the same HP since 2014. My price range is up to $1,000 but I'd prefer to stay under than if possible. I only need it for basic things such as: - college work - my job - streaming shows/movies - maybe uploading to YouTube

I'm open to any brands but I'm leaning towards Apple. I've heard Apple computers are worth the money and I have an iPhone. They'd work well together. Thanks in advance for any suggestions! (-:

Need help with laptop 'Preparing Automatic Repair' black screen.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 02:57 PM PDT

My laptop is having issues and I'm still not sure how to fix it. I looked things up to see how to fix it but I still got no idea what's wrong.

When I turn my laptop on, it starts normally showing Toshiba Logo and the circling dots. After a few seconds, it shuts off and turns back on to the same thing but the text below says Preparing Automatic Repair. It then turns into a black screen and nothing happens. I tried restarting but it keeps doing the same thing.

I looked things up, but as far as I can understand is that there could be a bad sector.

I would like some advice and help on what to do. Something tells me i need to get a new hard drive.

NOTE: I got important things saved so that isn't an issue. All i have been getting is How to save things on the hard drive but never how to fix the issue.

    Need an affordable/capable laptop.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 02:50 PM PDT

I have a cheap $300 laptop I got about 1 1/2 years ago and it's getting slow and space is limited. I'd like to get a laptop that can hold up operationally for a good while. Another issue mine has is with streaming and watching videos: it lags when the buffer bar is [sufficiently] filled. This isn't a data issue, as my phone plays the same content, no problem. I will be typing a lot, so I need one with a lot of storage, but nothing over the top (I know external hard drives are a thing, but I'd sooner have that ultimately be a compliment to my situation rather than a solution to it); I won't be using it for gaming or anything. I just need great storage and a "solid engine," if you get my drift. I'd like to keep it as far below $1,000 as possible without sacrificing what I'm looking for. Thank you for any suggestions.

Where to buy the Lenovo Legion 5 (15" AMD)?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 02:05 PM PDT

So, I think I've decided on a laptop. Lenovo came up over and over again when I was looking at laptop recommendations, and the Legion 5 looks like it will suit my needs (school and gaming) quite well. Now I'm wondering where the best place to buy it is. On Lenovo's website, the Legion 5 15" AMD is currently on sale for $960 USD, with a 5% student discount also being offered. Is this the best price I'll find for a new laptop? Or will other sites have better deals? Laptop randomly does this, I’ve determined that it’s the screen and not a graphics card issue. Warranty’s long gone, even then I wasn’t the original owner, any suggestions?

    Razer Laptop

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 01:17 PM PDT

Hey folks, I'm attempting to move my M.w drive to my new PC, from my razer blade 15. However when installed the M.2 and try to make it the boot drive. I get a message that says "razer restore support, razer laptops only". Did the M.2 drive get locked to my laptop ( which the drive came from another laptop as well) or is it just being fricky?

    I need feedback

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 12:45 PM PDT

I'm going into my first year of university this fall and I'm doing Graphic Design. I do animation on the side with my iPad. Recently, my iPad has dead on me so I've been looking at laptops. I want to photoshop for my art and things. I have it down to two laptops. I need help choosing upon the two and some feedback.

    1. Gigabyte Aero 17 HDR XC

A powerful laptop for graphic design

    CPU: ntel Core i7-10870H | Graphics: Nvidia Geforce RTX 3070 | RAM: 32GB DDR4 | Screen: 17.3-inches, 3,840 x 2,160 non-touch 60Hz IPS | Storage: 1TB SSD

New for 2021, the Gigabyte AERO 17 HDR XC is a brilliant laptop for graphic design thanks to its cutting-edge components, including a 10th generation Intel processor, and new Nvidia RTX 3070 laptop graphics card. This is one of the best mobile GPUs in the world, and it means the Gigabyte AERO 17 HDR XC can easily handle graphic design tasks and apps without breaking a sweat.

However, its best feature for graphic designers has to be the stunning 4K 17.3-inch screen, which supports 100% of the Adobe RGB colour gamut – essential for anyone who requires colour accuracy in their work, and the display has been Pantone calibrated as well.

It really looks amazing, and it offers a far higher resolution than even the mighty MacBook Pro (16-inch).

It also feels robust and built-to-last, and comes packed with ports, allowing you to plug in all of your must-have peripherals without needing an adaptor. It is expensive, however, so graphic designers on a budget may want to look elsewhere.

    1. Lenovo ThinkPad P1

    CPU: Intel Core i5, Core i7, Core i9 or Xeon | Graphics: Nvidia Quadro P1000 / P2000 | RAM: 8GB-64GB | Screen: 15.6" Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) | Storage: 256-4TB SSD

TheLenovo ThinkPad P1 is a brilliant graphic design workstation for high-level content creators. With options for Intel Xeon processors and pro-grade Nvidia Quadro P2000 graphics, along with up to 64GB of RAM, this is an extremely powerful laptop.

In fact, if offers the kind of performance you'd usually expect from a desktop workstation, but in a portable package that allows you to work on the road, or travel between studios. This machine sports a slick design, with a slim chassis and a 4K display with 100% AdobeRGB coverage. The screen alone makes it a joy for creative work, but with all the performance it offers too, the ThinkPad P1 is a seriously good laptop for graphic designers.

It also offers plenty of ports as well, including two USB 3.0, two USB-C Thunderbolt 3, an HDMI 2.0, DisplayPort and SD card reader. It's very expensive, but for demanding workloads, it's definitely a great investment.

What does it actually mean for a laptop to use Windows?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 12:24 PM PDT

So I'm looking to buy my first laptop, and I've seen several people say that MacBooks are the best, but they have a big drawback, in that they can't use Windows. So, as someone who is super new to computers, what does that actually mean for me as a user? What would I lose out on by not being able to use Windows? And are the benefits of a MacBook worth the loss of Windows?
