How long did your laptop work smoothly?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 11:48 AM PDT

Can anyone advise me on this gaming laptop? I need something simple for general computer use, but one that can also run simple games like mmos.

    Would like some laptop recommendations!

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 07:42 AM PDT

Hi! I am new to this sub, and I am in the search for a new laptop. I don't need a super expensive or sophisticated laptop, as in I don't need to do too much on it. I'm not planning on gaming or any other intensive software, mostly excel and editing photos. I would also prefer lightweight and a good battery life. Please let me know if you have any recommendations for specs/specific laptops and where I should look (new or used is fine)! Thank you!

Laptops fan acting up. Ive tried everythinf, reseting laptop, cleaned the entire laptop with dust blowers, but i cant seem to fix this irregular fan movement. Is this a software or hardware issue? I would appreciate if someone knew how to fix this. Thank you

Is it a good purchase? Meant especially for Adobe suite. What would you recommend? [Under 1k$ budget]

Looking for a portable laptop for Uni, that can hopefully handle gaming as well, is this my best current choice or is there something I'm not aware of yet?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 09:52 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      <2000€
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Not really
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I'd definitely like it to be portable, and to have a touch screen/pen support (yoga, tent mode as well). Build quality shouldn't be too shabby. I'd definitely like it to be able to run the common E-sport title games (R6, Val, etc.) Battery life doesn't have to be able to hold all day but should get me through a few lectures each day (at low consumption of course).
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Weight is quite important since I bike to Uni, so I'd prefer it to be as light as possible, thickness isn't that important, but shouldn't be too chunky
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I'll definitely be gaming so it should be able to handle the majority of games ranging from fps to RPGs. (doesn't need to be top-notch stuff, since it's ok to lower graphics etc.)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Valorant, R6 as well as future releases of battlefield or COD titles. Should hopefully also be able to run some of the newer RPG games, (f.e. assassins creed series etc)
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive, or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
touch screen with pen support would be great, as well as a yoga/tent mode. The keyboard shouldn't be too bad.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
This laptop will be mainly used for my studies as well as gaming/casual usage in my free time. hope for it to be portable to Uni and back and for it to be able to function for a few years. As of now the laptop I'm most inclined to buy is the Asus ROG flow X13 with an AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS processor, 16GB RAM, and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti graphic card.

Hope for some good suggestions and advice on whether the above-mentioned laptop is viable for what I want to use it. (Any user reviews would be helpful as well!)

    Thanks for helping!

First time charging Asus Zenbook Flip 15. Do I really have to charge it for 3 hours before using it on battery mode?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 12:48 PM PDT

See page 26 in this e-manual link: https://dustinimages.azureedge.net/media/d200001003289791/business-um462.pdf

I've only charged it for an hour and 15 minutes before the LED indicator turned from orange to white. I quickly unplugged it (from a 240V power source) because I have a bad history with overcharging (and ruining the batteries of) devices. I used the laptop to create a Microsoft account, used Paint a little bit, and checked out the Screenpad, which took around 40 minutes to an hour max. When I was done, the battery was at ~74%. That was 24 hours ago, and I have not used it since.

Do I really have to charge it the remaining hour and 45 minutes? Or should I charge it a whole 3 hours now? Also, if there's anything else you would like to add, please feel free to do so.

    Touchpad buttons not working right?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 11:35 AM PDT

So just now after starting up and logging onto my laptop, my left and right click buttons above the touchpad on my Lenovo ThinkPad Edge randomly just started to not work. Instead, now they merely move my cursor over to the right slightly every time I click either one. What happened and what can I do to fix it?

    Buying a Laptop

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 11:23 AM PDT

    Hello -

I'm looking to purchase the ROG Zephyrus G15 (https://www.bestbuy.com/site/asus-rog-zephyrus-15-6-qhd-gaming-laptop-amd-ryzen-9-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-rtx-3070-1tb-ssd-eclipse-grey-eclipse-grey/6448848.p?skuId=6448848) along with three external monitors all 2560x1440p at 144Hz (https://www.amazon.com/LG-27GL83A-B-Ultragear-Compatible-Monitor/dp/B07YGZL8XF/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=27%2B1440p%2B144hz%2Bmonitor&qid=1624817697&sr=8-3). I recently learned that you have to use the right type of cables (DP vs HDMI 2.1) in order to maximize the refresh rates on the monitors from the laptop. However, I'm looking at other alternatives to lessen the number of cables plugged into my laptop.

I'm primarily using my laptop as my "desktop replacement". It's mainly going to have its lid down 24/7 and I'll be using a wireless keyboard and mice (1 mouse for regular and 1 for gaming). As you can see in the G15, there are limited number of ports available.

I'm thinking about using an external hub to connect all (or some) my monitors and the USBs from the wireless keyboard and mice. I'm worried about latency as well as possible limitation when it comes to monitor resolution and refresh rates across the three monitors.

Is there a particular solution out there where I can ensure all my monitors will run at 1440P 144Hz and my keyboard+mice run with no latency? Is there a recommended hub or powered hub/dock?

    Thanks!

Suggestions for a first gaming laptop under 1350 USD

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 10:45 AM PDT

TLDR: Looking for a Gaming laptop with a good battery and GPU without compromising the CPU under 1350 USD

Hi, I am from India looking to buying my first gaming laptop (I haven't had a Gaming PC either) for my college. I will be doing a course on AI, Machine Learning, and Data science for which I have been told that the CPU is more important than the GPU. Nevertheless, I will be gaming a lot too. Not an avid gamer but I would be playing a lot of FPS games (Valorant, Apex Legends, etc.) and few other games as well. Battery life is my main concern (Not for gaming but for light use and college work) and second, comes the CPU and GPU. I have heard that AMD processors usually do better in terms of battery so I am sided with AMD processors here but totally cool with a great deal on Intel processors too. My budget is around 1 Lakh INR (or 1350 USD). I don't know what other information should be added here but I will be responding in the comments if you need more information. Thank you in advance and have a good day :)

Cheap laptop capable of running Fallout: New Vegas (yes, the 11 year old game) at 60fps? [US, tentative $700 budget]

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 06:48 AM PDT

I realize that this is a really bizarre standard, but it's my favorite game and I've always just wanted to play it at a decent, stable framerate. My Acer Aspire E15 has been a good machine but can only run FNV at 30fps, and even then not consistently. I'm not interested in overshooting this. Even most "budget" gaming laptops I see get recommended are aiming to be able to play modern Triple A games and are therefore priced accordingly.

So I guess the obvious thing is that I'm not really looking for a "gaming" laptop per se. Just a laptop with maybe an entry-level (we're talking ground floor entry level) dedicated graphics card and a decent processor? Whatever it takes to meet this simple standard without going overboard.

    Obligatory Questionnaire:

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

As the title indicated, I'm aiming for no great than $700 but ideally lower than that.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    If the offer's good, yeah.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Anything works, though if I can be picky I'd prefer it not have that godawful geometric/red-and-black capital-g-Gamer aesthetic.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Non-factor.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15.6'' ideally.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    N/A.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Like I said, just FNV (and Fallout 3 by extension obviously) at a stable 60fps when ran at reasonable settings (like 2 AA samples, HDR, reasonable render distance, think medium/high settings basically). I'm sure if it's capable of doing that, it's capable of running nearly any indie game, which is what I primarily tend to play on laptop.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Ideally a keyboard with a numpad.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I know this is a weird standard, but it's been deceptively difficult to find any recommendations to meet this criteria that don't either under-perform or are way out of budget. I'll love you forever if you can help with this.

    Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05 overheating

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 02:50 AM PDT

    Hello guys!

I recently bought a legion 5 with ryzen 7 4800h, 1650 ti and today i was installing rdr2. When running on battery everything was fine (max 86 degrees and really quiet). But when i plugged it in (entered performance mode), i saw it running at about 85-87 degrees minimum, with a peak at 97 degrees. This is quite concerning since everywhere I read about this laptop, people were very satisfied with thermals.

If it peaked at 97 during an installation, I can't imagine what will happen when I actually start playing. Did any of you have the same problem? Is this normal?

    Thank you!

Dell vs Asus vs Lenovo - Music production

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 08:41 AM PDT

Hi!! I am buying a new laptop and I found three laptops for the exact same price. My only problem is which one to chose based on my needs. I am mostly interested in music production and I need a laptop that would perform well with DAWs- especially Ableton. The laptops concerned are:

    • LENOVO IdeaPad 3 81W4005GSC / Ryzen 7 4700U, 8GB, 512GB SSD, Radeon Vega 7, 15,6", LED FHD, FreeDOS

    • ASUS VivoBook KM513IA-WB711 / Ryzen 7 4700U, 8GB, SSD 512GB, Radeon Graphics, 15.6'' FHD IPS

    • DELL Inspiron 3505 / Ryzen 5 3450U, 12GB, 1000GB + 256GB SSD, Radeon Graphics, 15.6" IPS Touch FHD, Windows 10

My favorite is probably DELL because you get so much more than the others for the same price but my concern is that its processor is not as good as with these other two ones and I am primarily looking for best performance, not necessarily bonus specs. So which one do you think would work best for music production?

I appreciate all of your thoughts and comments!
