    Ipad replacement

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Flexible budget. United Kingdom
Great if < 1500 GBP, Good if < 2000 GBP.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
I'd like to replace my Ipad Pro by a laptop, hence, form is the main factor
I seek most of the benefits of an iPad (such as lightweight, capability to draw, great display, no fans/noise, being detachable or 2-in-1) while being able to run Windows apps/games and multiuser login
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Important. Ideally between 1-1.5kg
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Mostly basic office stuff and gaming
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Ive a razer blade for heavy 3d games.
Id love to run smoothly 2d games at max (e.g. Hades) and simple 3d games at good quality (e.g. Dota). Heavy 3d games (e.g. monster hunter) at lower settings would be nice to have
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      Already described above
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Microsoft book 3 seems an interesting option but it's too costly for its specs at USD 3K imho
    • Thank you very much!

Ipad Pro and Laptop combination for Residency

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 12:19 AM PDT

    hello all,

I will be buying a laptop and ipad pro for this upcoming school year, and was curious if anyone had a suggestion which laptop would be a good one to use with an ipad pro. I am surgical resident, and will be using the ipad to look up CT scans and study, and the laptop more for work at home. I was leaning towards a PC and Ipad Pro combination, but an open to suggestions. I am aiming to buy this in about a month with back to school specials. Thanks for reading and suggestions!

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Looking to spend up to 1,000 USD

    · Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Would prefer new

    · How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Performance and battery life

    · How important is weight and thinness to you?

For the laptop, important, but the reason for table is so I do not need to take it with my always to work (but could if I need to work on it)

    · Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/a

    · Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    N/a

    · If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    n/a

    · Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Integrability with my tablet device, good battery life,

    · Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am planning on using my tablet as a pseudo laptop at work (able to see scans, study, read text books), and using my laptop as a desktop/presentation laptop, still need to have the ability to see scans and need it be portable

Laptop suggestion for University, looking to last 5-6 years

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 11:33 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      - 1000 USD, can go 100 higher if needed
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Ultrabook preferably, coming from a macbook so build quality is preferred aswell as a battery that can last a solid 8 hour day of typing
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Going to be carrying it around for most of the day so prefer as light as possible given build quality
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      13-14 inch is preferred
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Only light gaming
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
If anything probably low demand games, FF7, binding of isaac etc
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Use a mechanical keyboard on my desktop so I am picky in regards to keyboards but would much rather the laptop as a whole to feel solid
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
Coming from a macbook which I didn't like purely because of macOS, enjoyed the build quality and keyboard and would like something that doesn't feel like a downgrade

    Looking for a Gaming/Work laptop $1000-1250.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 06:10 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    · Total budget:

$1000-$1250 USD (Can bump up to $1500 if I need to)

    United States

    · Are you open to refurbs/used?

Only if it is from Amazon or a retailer with an easy return policy

    · How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Not a fan of 2-in-1 or touchscreen laptops. Like a good old keyboard.

I prioritize a nice display and performance (looking for a solid graphics card and CPU).

99% of its life will be parked on my desk and plugged in so battery life is not an issue.

    · How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important.

    · Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Prefer 15"

Could go 13" or 17" if necessary.

    · Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    Excel & Zoom

    · If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

MTG Arena, MTGO, Minecraft (with shaders).

    · Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I use a bunch of USB ports: Mouse, Keyboard, Webcam, and Microphone. I would say I need a minimum of 3 but 4 would be preferable.

Ability to use multiple external displays; I would like to be able to hook up two external monitors.

    Nice keyboard.

I typically keep my laptops for ~5 years. I would preferer something that can keep up that long.

Expandable RAM/Storage is a big plus for me.

Thank you guys for your assistance =)

    Should I get a 256gb or 512gb MacBook Air?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 05:41 AM PDT

Hi! I'm going to university soon and will buy a MacBook for the first time.

•I'm double majoring in Econometrics and Economics

•I want to use this laptop for as long as possible (7 years?)

    •I don't have a PC

•I'm running out space in my 50gb ICloud

•I have an external hard drive (1 TB)

How many gigabytes should I buy?

    How many do you have?

I don't want to worry about storage issues but I also don't want to spend more on something I won't need.

    Thank you.

      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life and performance highest on list ( Something that would make it 5-6+ hours without having to be plugged in since I'll be at school). • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Do not want to carry around large and heavy laptop (such as gaming laptop) and would prefer something a bit smaller and lighter.

League of Legends with lowest settings at 60+ fps

Laptop for Graduate School + Light Gaming

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 01:02 AM PDT

    Budget / Country

    • <$800-900 USA •
    • Do you prefer a 2 in 1 form factor, good battery life or best specifications for the money? Decent battery life and a laptop that doesn't need a replacement for at least 5 years I guess.
    • • How important is weight and thinness to you? Must be easily portable and not too heavy since I will be walking around campus quite often
    • Which OS do you require? Windows
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? Don't mind any, 13-15 inches, open to options
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? Mostly web browsing, research papers, designing such as Figma, Miro, R programming, HTML/CSS for graduate school. Apart from that, some light gaming Maple Story and Netflix
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Storage space is a must for all the programs I use above and no lagging.

    Thanks guys!

Bottom line: I just need a good laptop for graduate school (using mostly for design and research papers) but also for some light gaming only on Maple Story (which I read doesn't require amazing specs).

    Laptop advice for limited options

    Posted: 28 Jun 2021 12:01 AM PDT

    First time post here....

My main use will be playing games/watch movies.

I like ASUS/ACER due good experiences with them, and I'm skittish to try new brand even they aren't bad (MSI/RAZER..etc). For DELL/HP, they don't have good gaming currently so they are out as well...

Due to varies reasons I'm not sure about, we have serious laptop shortage locally. I don't have much choice, and narrow down to few below: (my concerns are in the () )

    1. ASUS Zephyrus G14 : ~USD$1500 (Good CPU with out-of-date GPU??, is it really future proof ?)
      - R7-4800HS / GTX1660Ti / 1TB SSD / 8GB DDR4 on board + 8GB DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM
    2. ASUS TUF DASH F15 : ~$1430 (Only 8g RAM, I'll probably need get another 8g myself. Not sure if they got the slot to do it though)
      - i7-11370H / RTX 3060 / 512GB SSD /8GB DDR4 on board
    3. ACER Nitro5 AN515: ~$1290 (Mediocre CPU with not-so-bad GPU??, is it really future proof?)
      - i7-10750H / RTX 2060 / 512GB SSD / 1*16GB DDR4

Some other opts are either with RTX3050Ti ,which i read it's not really a good GPU for gaming?

    I'm leaning toward no.3, any advice ?

    780$ United States

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    1. Build quality. I want something that will last a couple of years.

      1. Performance. I want to be able to run steam games as well Minecraft decently
      2. Form factor.
      3. Battery life. I'll mostly be using this at home with a charger readily available.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Fine with whatever.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I mainly wish to be able to play Skyrim, Subnautica, Terraria, Minecraft, and Borderlands 2/3. I dont mind turning down graphical settings. If possible, id also like a laptop that can install and play roblox for my little brother

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Just the games listed above as well as a couple of other steam games that aren't nearly as demanding. I hope to be able to run these games at 50-60 FPS.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Preferably a good webcam but not at all required.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I apologize if I've set any unrealistic expectations given my budget or answered any of the questions wrong. I'm not very knowledgeable in laptops or computers in general.

Also, I've heard that the acer nitro 5 isn't too much and could run the mentioned games well. Is this true?

    Mobile 3050 or 1660 Ti?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 08:49 AM PDT

I am finding it hard to get a comparison of the RTX 3050 (not Ti) to the 1660 Ti. I can get the 3050 cheaper, but I am not looking specifically for cheaper or what CAN run Cyberpunk better. I do light gaming on my PC/Laptop but my wife does plenty of Krista, Photoshop, etc, and I do hobbiest game dev (Godot, mainly, so not super intensive.

Would I be seeing much of a difference between the 2? The 1660 Ti is paired to a i7-10750H while the 3050 is paired to a Ryzen 5600H, so the deal breaker I am thinking is the video card.

    Thanks!

EDIT: It has been decided. Thanks all

Laptop with built-in mouse or alternative novelty

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 07:45 PM PDT

Anyone know if there are any viable modern laptops with a detachable (or wired detached) mouse or something similar to a mouse? I'm ok with anything but the touchpad. The spirit tof my request is to anything that could work reasonably for fps gaming yet doesn't require me to carry a separate mouse in my bag. I really like the idea of an "all-in-one portable" of anything. It doesn't have to be a power house, just needs to run CS:GO at full speed.

I'm not in need of a device like this, but I'd buy one if it has the novelty I'm looking for. In case I'm not clear, any alternative to the mousepad will do, so long as it's attached to (or detachable from) the laptop. The OS doesn't matter.

$1500 2 in 1 with Dedicated Graphics United States

    Posted: 27 Jun 2021 03:47 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $1500 Edit: United States Are you open to refurbs/used? Nope, have had bad experiences before, but fine with open-box. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Needs to be a 2 in 1, battery life doesn't matter much just good enough, build quality needs to be better than all plastic, performance needs to have a graphics card that performs better than a Intel Iris Xe MAX (nVidia or AMD probably) and at least an i7 or Ryzen 7. How important is weight and thinness to you? Needs to be under 4.5 lbs Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Needs to be under 15" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Yes, video editing, photo editing, and gaming, will mainly run Minecraft at high settings, Davinci resolve, Krita, and Gimp If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Above 60 FPS in Minecraft 1.17 with no mods at medium-high settings Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Touch screen with pen support, would like thunderbolt 3/4, but multiple USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports would also work. I would also like an HDMI port and USB A port, but these aren't needed, just would be nice to have. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I have looked at the Asus ROG Flow X13 cheapest option and Microsoft Surface Book 13.5" i7 256gb option and was even about to buy the Asus but I just wanted to make sure that I was getting the best laptop for me.

    Omen 15 (R5 5600H, 3060, 1tb)

    Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (5900HS, 3060, 1tb)

Which of these would you recommend and why. I'm open to any alternatives too, and heard that the Lenovo Legion 5 was good, but it's a little over my budget.

I'm stuck betwen Lenovo ideapad 3 "15 and ideapad "14, what should I go for?

Unfortunately the ideapad 5 "15 inch is not available in my country the only available variation of the ideapad 5 available is the "14 inch version for a starting price of 719 €.

That being said I found out that I could I could configure and purchase the ideapad 3 "15 inch version with much better specifications at lower price the only downside is the battery life 56W on the ideapad 5 "14 and 38W for the ideapad 3 "15, which I honestly don't care about.

These are the specifications of the ideapad 3 "15:

    CPU: Ryzen 7 5700u (the idapad 5 "14 comes with a Ryzen 5 5500u)

    RAM: 8*2 (16) gb DDR4 3200 MHZ (the idapad 5 "14 comes with 4*2 gb DDR4 3200 MHZ)

    Storage: 512 gb 2242 M.2

    Screen: 15.6" (1920x1080) IPS, anti-glare, 300 nits, 60 Hz, Non Tactile, 45% NTSC (Same as the ideapad 5 "14)

    Battery: 38Wh

    Charger: 65W

    Price: 710 €

Hopefully this would give you a general idea about the laptop. What should I go for?

    Thanks
