Did my student send me a purposefully corrupted file? Word file used to be a gzip? Posted: 03 Jun 2021 03:49 AM PDT Hi, I'm a high school teacher. Thoughout the pandemic I had a student who has never sent in any assignements, blaming various technical circumstances. He solemnly swore he did his assignements. Homeschooling is over and we see in person again. With reports approaching, I have asked him to hand in all assignements in person and that he should print them out and hand them in by a due date. Now, he wrote me a mail, stating that all of his files got corrupted because he had a virus and had to reboot the computer. He was able to restore the files, but didn't notice they got corruped in the process. He sent me word file to demonstrate this and of course I couldn't open it. I have done some research and it came to light that the .docx file used to be a gzip file. Also, the document size is only 1 KB. Is this student tricking me or does this story make sense? I have never encountered the gzip format. [link] [comments]

Poor browser performance despite good internet connection Posted: 02 Jun 2021 05:51 PM PDT Hi everyone, Apologies for posting about the same issue twice, but despite everything I have tried my problem remains unresolved. Since the beginning of the year I have been suffering from poor internet browser performance, both with Chrome and Firefox, as well as with some related applications such as Spotify and Steam. Symptoms: -Slow load times on almost all websites -Sometimes pages will not load at all unless the page load is cancelled and refreshed -A portion of the images/icons on a page like Facebook or Twitch will fail to load -YouTube videos take forever to load and often load initially at low quality -Gmail is very sluggish when moving between inboxes, and regularly fails to both attach files and download attachments -Interactive modules/buttons, such as login buttons or channel points on Twitch, will fail to load until refreshed -Login on some websites is impossible; clicking the login button does nothing Despite these issues, my internet connection appears to be otherwise fine. I have gigabit internet through Verizon FiOS (G3100 router, wired connection), and speed tests seem to confirm that I have the expected speeds. When playing online games and voice chatting over discord, I have no connection issues whatsoever. Also these problems only occur on my desktop computer; I haven't had issues with any other devices. These problems persist both in incognito mode and with all extensions removed from chrome. The only extensions I use are uBlock Origin, BetterTTV, and Twitch AdBlock. Here is a list of what I have tried thus far: -Set a static IP address for my desktop -Set DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. -In my router's firewall settings, set port forwarding for HTTPS to my desktop -In my router's network settings, forwarded ports 80 and 554 to my desktop -Downloaded TCP optimizer and changed settings to "optimal" I am at a loss for what else to try. Using my browser on my desktop has become extremely frustrating over the past 5 months and it's been a major roadblock to my work. I would appreciate any ideas you lovely people might have. Thanks! How to recover files after cloning bad HDD with ddrescue? Posted: 02 Jun 2021 08:51 PM PDT My HDD went bad so I cloned it. The clone shows the exact same errors (which I think is expected?), Windows says is corrupted and unreadable and Linux shows 1tb of unallocated space, no partitions or anything. What should I do now to recover my files? There were ≈700gb of files, photos and stuff before, but after running Photorec I only got back 22gb of some weird files I don't know how to work with. Is it possible to actually recover all files? [link] [comments]
