    Upgrading Dell Inspiron 7548

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 10:06 AM PDT

My laptop is so slow and the disk is running at 100%. I bought it in 2016 for college. It has always been slow. My husband thinks the hard drive is going out since the task manager says disk is running at 100%. I plugged in an external hard drive and it went down to 50%. I really don't want to buy a whole new laptop. Is there any way to upgrade my current setup to make it faster and work better? I know I can get an SSD but that's about as far as I've gotten.

Not sure if this is necessary but it's an i5 6GB RAM and it has a touch screen which acts up sometimes

Looking for a cheap laptop that can play a couple of games

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 11:35 AM PDT

    • **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:** 450€ in Greece
    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?** yes
    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?** performance/build quality/battery life
    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?** not important
    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** N/A
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** I'd just like to be able to run a couple of games, namely League of Legends and Dead By Daylight
    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** 720p 30-40+fps minimum, if not in lowest graphics settings even better
    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** as long as it's not something universally considered as horrible, then im fine with it. I already have a decent mouse and keyboard if I need to use them. Nice speakers are welcome, though I do have a decent ANC headset that im probably gonna be using most of the time.
    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** I'm gonna be pairing it with an additional external 500gb or 1tb HDD, so storage shouldn't really be a concern, as long as it's got an SSD in it. But it's always nice to have more space you know?
    • I'm gonna be selling my desktop soon which is gonna fetch quite a nice price (GPU inflation), mainly because I'm gonna be moving out soon for my studies and i won't wanna be carrying a huge box around. Then again i'm not gaming nowadays as much as I used to, it's only the 2 aforementioned games that I still like to play sometimes and league isn't even that demanding. Of course it's gonna make me a lot more than 450€, actually a lot more than it cost me to build, but I don't wanna spend anything more than that. I've been looking around myself for those famous used 1650ti laptops but they don't exist here, and any new ones that you can find cost a lot more than they do in the US. I don't mind buying used/refurbished or buying from abroad, but I do worry about scams and all that, I know there are some good deals out there but I'm never sure if i can trust them. Then again there's the shipping fees factor, amazon for example charges too much to ship here.

hp omen 15 flickering after using it from sleep

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 12:44 PM PDT

flickering (sorry I can't really capture this and this "effect" is most prominent on a grey-colored window, my black bg doesn't does show this "effect" whatsoever)

I've reinstalled the drivers. didn't do anything.

I've updated windows. didn't do anything.

I've also checked if it was a display connection issue, didn't reproduce the issue.

I've also noticed this mostly happens when I wake the laptop up after it automatically sleeps due to inactivity.

I ultimately plan on giving this for a checkup with the hp guys, but is there anything else I could to resolve this issue or at least pinpoint the cause?

Budget Laptop for Office Work, Study and Simple Software (MATLAB, Python Codin)

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 12:24 PM PDT

    What could be the problem?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 12:06 PM PDT

I just bought a Predator Helios 300 last June 2020 and noticed that it gets hotter easily compared to other gaming laptops. I often use the laptop at 12hrs per day plugged in because I always use rendering softwares and the applications lag if it's not plugged in.

So the situation is one night I left the laptop at my room while rendering and suddenly there were several power surges. (Brownouts) i think atleast 3 times the power turned off and on. I did not notice the laptop immediately as I expected it to stay open and working but just not plugged in. When I checked on it the laptop was turned off also interrupting my render. I tried clicking on the power button expecting it to open because it was charged, but it wont open. When the power came back I tried to plug it in and then it opened. I thought nothing of it as my laptop sometimes shuts down when multiple apps are open.

So today thinking nothing was wrong as i finished working (all the apps where closed already) i was getting ready to shut down the laptop when i unplugged it and it just turned black. Like before when I click the power button it wont open. The laptop would just work when it is plugged in and immediately shut down when unplugged. Its like i'm working on a laptop without a battery inserted.

YouTube stutters on 2nd screen when laptop lid is closed

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 11:47 AM PDT

Hi all, I'm having a bit of a weird problem with my laptop and I hope you can help me solve it as I haven't found anything on Google. I'm posting here as it's a laptop specific question I guess.

    Laptop: Dell Inspiron 7559 (i7-6700HQ, GTX760M, 8GB)

Monitor: BenQ GW2780 (Laptop connected via HDMI)

Issue: When I close the lid, YouTube starts stuttering and automatically lowers video quality down to 360p; I can manually change it back to 1080p but when I do the framerate on the video drops to something like 20 FPS.

I sometimes keep the lid open and mirror the screens, and when I do this the issue doesn't occur. Also it doesn't depend on my internet as it downloads at about 400Mbps.

The only thing I can think of is that somehow video output shifts from the Nvidia to the integrated Intel GPU when I close the lid, but I have no idea how to check that.

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    Ram upgrade in Acer Aspire E15 E5-571G Black Screen - 8b 2Rx8 PC3L 12800s 11-13-F3

    Ram upgrade in Acer Aspire E15 E5-571G Black Screen - 8b 2Rx8 PC3L 12800s 11-13-F3

    HI everyone,

I have an Acer Aspire E15 E5-571G with 4GB of ram with one free slot, the image below:

    https://preview.redd.it/5ngz5jg9g3371.png?width=2536&format=png&auto=webp&s=b9994286b2b6c8bf43309feaaa7d1de15f99c62c

I bought the following 8gb of ram

    https://preview.redd.it/6megybdlg3371.png?width=2436&format=png&auto=webp&s=480cb4181f2aaee7474d9d32d1835c50bb6b6b48

I try both Rams (slot 1 - 4GB and slot 2 - 8GB) and only the 8GB (slot 1 - 8GB) neither of the combinations let the laptop to boot. It is only showing a black screen, even when pressing the power button it doesn't make the small beep as when it is only with the original 4GB of Ram.

I run the crucial app an it shows that I can upgrade to this ram: https://www.crucial.com/memory/ddr3/ct102464bf160b

Did I choose the wrong ram or I'm doing something wrong?

    Thanks in advance!

Can you recommend me a laptop? (tl;dr at the end)

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 11:35 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!
My super old laptop died and I'm looking for a new Windows Laptop.

It would mainly be used as a productivity laptop at home, in the office and outside. There might need to do some light image and video editing on it, but nothing hardcore or professional. At some point, I would buy a dock to be able to use it with extended periphery. For research stuff I might have a lot of stuff open at once, so it should have 16GB RAM at least. I'm ok with 8 if I can upgrade it myself.
I'm looking for a high quality build that is sturdy, light, and will last me some time. I'm aiming for a 15'' with a 16:10 or 3:2 display, if possible. 14'' is ok too if the rest is good. One crucial point is the screen brightness - during the summer I like to work on my balcony, but my old laptop could only handle cloudy days since the display was too dim. This time I would like to have a 400+ nits / 400+ cd/m² display so I can work outside on sunny days too.

A lot of middle class laptops already have everything I need for about 1k$/800€ except the screen, which is set at 250 or 300 nits for most models. I kinda fell in love with the XPS 15, but the lowest priced 16GB RAM model is placed at 2.3k$/1.9k€, which is too expensive for me.

For some really good build quality I might spend up to 1.8k$/1.5k€, but if there are middle class models that happen to have everything I need, I gladly play less.

TL;DR: Windows productivity laptop with 400+ nits 15'' display (preferably 16:10/3:2) and good build quality between 1k and 1.8k$.

    I appreciate your help! <3

    1650 max q in 2021?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 10:55 AM PDT

I've been looking for low end gaming laptops with decent build quality such as the msi gf63. I'm wondering if that gpu will be sufficient; I just want to be able to get decent performance preferably around medium or higher settings. I've been looking for something with maybe a 1660ti, but they're all at least $250 more, so I'm not sure if it's worth it. Can anyone tell me if I should just save up and spend $1k or will a 1650 maxq be sufficient?

The cooling fans on my Acer Predator 17 laptop is making a lot of noise will a Cooling Pad help reduce it?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 10:04 AM PDT

I have an Acer predator 17 laptop and recently i have noticed the fans inside it, is making alot of noise, even if i am just surfing the internet or playing games (and here i am talking even older games like Hexen from 1995 i have even noticed temporary freezing in that game).
I have tried to format the computer, but i didn´t help.
So i was thinking that maybe its because the CPU got too hot or something, so i am thinking of buying a cooling pad, but will it help reduce the noise from the laptop or is it just a waste of money?

Passable graphics cards for a 2D animation laptop?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 09:55 AM PDT

    Hello!

I am looking at some secondhand laptops to use as a portable work setup. The most intense work I intend to do is After Effects - but I will also be using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

My priorities are that it can run After Effects and isn't too heavy - I really want to be able to tote it around as easily as possible.

I found a few options but I don't know enough about graphics cards to know which is the best bet.

The options I have right now are:

    1. NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of VRAM
    2. Nvidia MX150
    3. Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB

(I also found a laptop with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 (4GB), which would be great, but it's a heavy laptop.)

Any thoughts? Would any of these be a big NO for 2D animation work?

I have no idea what laptop I should get. I have a budget of 765 American dollars, but keep in mind electronics are a lot more expensive in my country. The laptop I'm currently looking at (I want stuff around the cost of this :
