Posted: 03 May 2021 03:13 AM PDT My moms computer was in disrepair, and I saw an awesome deal for a Lenovo T450s for $175 (CAD), so I scooped it up and gave it to my mom, running Windows 10 I have external drive that has all the family photos, it came with 2 partitions, one was very small and one was the remaining space (almost 3TB) so I thought that was weird and wiped it and made one ext4 partition, for use with my Pi, then after I stopped using my Pi I reformatted it as fat in case I needed to plug it into a Windows computer so I go to give my mom the photos, but the drive isnt being recognized by windows at all, not even getting the, this drive needs to be repaired dialog, my GNU/Linux computer sees it fine, I think that small partition was for windows to see it so whatever, I know putty exists, I will plug the drive into my computer and SSH the photos over, well, I couldnt figure out putty, I thought I could just SSH from my computer into Windows and scp/rsync or something the photos over, but from what I could gather, I have to use pscp from windows, and I couldnt figure that out, I dont know DOS commands and it kept throwing errors with the ones I copied from the internet next I thought WSL to SSH, but I couldnt figure out how to find/install that, I did find Ubuntu in the windows store, but it required WSL when I tried to install it finally I tried taking the sdcard out of my phone, success, windows sees it, and GNU/Linux sees it, I just use my sdcard to transfer 80gb of photos over overall windows sucks, SSH should be built in functionality by the year of our lord 2021 [link] [comments] |

I deleted the linux drive partitions during windows installation. Is there ANY way to recover? (Haven't done anything to the drive after deleting the partitions) [link] [comments] |

What is the safe way of writing and executing inside the / root directories? Posted: 03 May 2021 12:02 AM PDT I can recall from various SO answers that chmod 777 is VERY dangerous. I vaguely remember that the best practice has something to do with group permissions (and sudo ofc). Can someone please elaborate on permission best practices for me? [link] [comments] |
Got an error with resetting forgotten root password. Posted: 03 May 2021 08:36 AM PDT so i added rd.break to the end of the line starting with linux in grub config so now i am supposed to mount sysroot and do the normal stuff to reset the password right, but before i can do this, the system asks me for my root password to continue which i obviously dont know the weird thing is, i tried this in another computer and it didn't ask me for any root password to proceed but this computer does, dont know what am i doing different. Can someone help me out? I am running the latest Fedora 34 on both. [link] [comments] |

Is it Worth the Effort/Security Risk to Host Your Own Website? Posted: 03 May 2021 01:55 PM PDT I have an old dell optiplex that I use for random server things/learning, and I was considering hosting a portfolio website on it. While I really want to do this to learn, I also want to use it as a kind of permanent host for said website. Is it worth the potential security risks I may impose by hosting it? Or, alternatlively, what resources are used to kind of "strengthen" the security of said website? [link] [comments] |
Laptop screen will not display Linux Posted: 03 May 2021 09:36 AM PDT Recently bought the new super-cheap Walmart Gateway Ultra Slim Notebook. I have limited Linux experience. I've installed it on a few computers, dual boot once, and ran a few times from live USB. For this particular notebook, I have ran from a live USB: Pop!, Unbuntu and Mint. Each time, there is a few words on a black screen, then quickly goes dark. I hear the boot sounds of Unbuntu and Mint. And when I have attached to a second monitor, it at least displays the desktop background there. Unbuntu and Pop only showed the extended screen, so I could not do anything. Mint had a messed up display that I managed to fix on the second monitor, but I was never able to display it on the laptop screen. So, I know that it is running, but the laptop wont display it. Any ideas? I think Mint is the only one that I can actually do anything with, as the other two only show extended displays on the second monitor. Oh! And I used Balena Etcher to make the Live USBs, if that matters. They will not load at all on my work DELL (give errors), but I'm not sure if that is due to security installed by my company. I just want to not have to use Windows 10 and the distro needs to be stable and beginner friendly. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 May 2021 12:58 PM PDT I have multiple partitions on my disk, 1 of them is kde neon, another which is ubuntu and another which is fedora. Decided I didnt need the ubuntu partition anymore, since I decided that I liked fedora, so I deleted the ubuntu partition (yes dumb move) Now each time I boot up, I get the grub rescue console. I set the kde neon partition as boot and prefix with
Kde neons's boot/grub folder looks fine although it doesnt have a locale folder. Anyways I would like to have to boot into fedora each time, how would I fix this? (yes I have a live usb) [link] [comments] |

It was working fine but from last couple of weeks it has got to slow and it heats too much. Can anyone suggest me how to improve the Performance of it. Please. Otherwise I'd have to move back to the old OS. [link] [comments] |
BIOS won't let me boot into Linux Posted: 03 May 2021 12:30 PM PDT Hello, I recently installed a flavor of Ubuntu to dual boot with Windows 10 (which one doesn't matter, this is a BIOS problem), and after removing install media and pressing enter, it boots back into windows. I went into my BIOS to check what was wrong and in boot options there was no ubuntu, and it wasn't in the boot device order either. Everyone else who had this problem was running Acer motherboards as well, so that might be the problem. Anyways I made sure to do the whole secure boot thing and all, and I followed the guide step by step. The only way I can see any trace of ubuntu being there is if I go into windows and turn on advanced startup, having it reboot my pc, and selecting the "boot device" option. I selected the one named "ubuntu" and the screen goes black for a couple of seconds, then gives me an error screen saying "Warning! Selected boot device disabled in BIOS setup". So, as far as I know, I have ubuntu installed, but the BIOS has it disabled, and I can't find a way to enable it. I have tried software like EasyUEFI, and that recognized ubuntu so I put in the top of the order. One last thing, certain forums said to select the ubuntu file from BIOS, but that option is not available. This is all on an Acer Aspire TC-780UR1A desktop computer. Cheers! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 May 2021 11:48 AM PDT I've done a Debian minimal install and I have no audio. I'm using a Thinkpad X230 with the Intel Corporation 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04). Alsa however relies on non-free (FOSS, that is) software. Does anybody know an alternative I can use to make my audio work? [link] [comments] |

Problem with free up space when sync OneDrive Posted: 03 May 2021 03:23 AM PDT My current OS is Manjaro(Arch Linux) I am currently using rcloud to sync onedrive to my computer. But when I open the file on the Onedrive drive, the files on Cloud are synchronized to the drive, causing the SSD drive capacity to increase. The question here is: How do I free up space for files I don't want to continue using in OneDrive Drive to reduce the amount of space occupied in the SSD drive? Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 03 May 2021 10:45 AM PDT This may be a simple question, but I want to know whether I should erase all of my pc's data and everything on it (files, programs, games etc.) to install a linux disto or keep windows for now which has alot of my data that im not sure whether i wanna lose or not. Basically i wanna install Linux but also know whether i should start over or keep my data that i most likely wont care about in the future or find a way to transfer my data [link] [comments] |

Separate smart devices from local network Posted: 03 May 2021 10:17 AM PDT I'd like to set up a separate WiFi Hotspot for my smart devices using a Raspberry Pi. The Pi will be connected to the local network over Ethernet. I'd like to be able to access the devices that are using the Pi's WiFi Hotspot, but the devices connected to it shouldn't be able to access my local network. How do I realize this?
