Trolled into running rm -rf {help} Posted: 30 Apr 2021 03:30 PM PDT I need urgent help. Made the switch to linux after a month of research and needed help with a small issue. I asked for help on here and another linux question subreddit and a user contacted me, he had kali or something like that in his username. He was very nice guy and told me to run rm -rf something command and then my computer broke. I am scared to lose everything. I have family photos I already miss. Who can help me? I am noob who try to move to linux to support the project and this happens to me already. I beg someone to help me I am desperate to even have family photos retrieved. UPDATE :) I recovered files following your advice and I am happy. You are all great people. The user is banned from here but he message me really nice and helpful. He also did to another guy too. Tip: If you feel your terminal font (on dark background) is looking too light or grainy, try this Posted: 01 May 2021 06:08 AM PDT Change the font weight to the next option available. For eg: If you are using Source Code Pro Regular, try switching to Source Code Pro Medium and so on. The font becomes a bit thicker, thus becoming more legible in dark backgrounds. Posted: 01 May 2021 10:54 AM PDT Hello, i'm sorry if this is a stupid question but i'm new into this can i install vmware and linux on my daily use laptop? or will it cause me some problems? like reducing the speed, failing to boot ,lagging, etc? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 May 2021 01:29 AM PDT I've bought a Raspberry Pi in the hope that I can use it to familiarise myself with the Linux operating system. I'm enjoying using Linux so far, but I'm a total beginner at this, and I've noticed that almost every time I try to do install something that I might find useful, I find that it is only available for x86 CPUs. Is this a common problem that ARM users encounter? I thought that a Raspberry Pi would be a good way to learn how to use Linux, but is there any reason I shouldn't just look for an x86 alternative? Apologies if I've missed something obvious. Thanks in advance!! [link] [comments] |
Installed Ubuntu for a friend, now he hates Linux forever Posted: 01 May 2021 04:44 AM PDT So my friend has this old PC: Core i3-5th gen, Radeon GPU of the same era, 8GB RAM. The Windows OS has become terribly bogged down over the years, but that hardware isn't too bad. Obviously, I convinced him to go Linux, "breath new life" etc etc. So I nuked the drive, installed Ubuntu LTS, and moved the PC to the living room to use as a media player on the big screen. Simple, right? Things didn't go so well, almost from the start. By the end of the week, he was convinced that Linux is simply the worst. Kodi installed from the software center simply didn't work. It starts up and the display blacks out. Ok, let's just use VLC player then. Well, switching VLC to full screen causes the display to behave erratically (freezing, not scaling). Had to go into VLC settings and force X11 output to fix. It takes up to 5 seconds from double-clicking a video file to VLC actually opening. In that time, he tends to keep clicking because there's no indication that anything is happening. By the time VLC starts, he's got 3 instances running. Then, you can't close VLC because closing while another instance is running causes the thread to freeze. Again, fixed by going into settings and force 1-instance only. Then he tells me you can't drag and drop files to desktop. My eyes widened. Then he says he can't see the filenames of his videos in file explorer (they're quite long). I was speechless. Clearly, by this point, he had made up his mind. So, before I go back to format and reinstall Windows, tail between my legs, anything else I can try to salvage the situation? [link] [comments] |
Proprietary Nvidia driver just doesn't want to work Posted: 01 May 2021 01:55 PM PDT So I've been trynig to get Wine games working and it seems my issues come down to my OS not using my discrete GPU. After trying a bunch of things I pulled the plug and reinstalled Debian and the first thing I did was downloading the Nvidia driver: It did complain about a conflicting package,
Can I fix this or should I go back to Windows? [link] [comments] |

Help needed - understanding nmap command Posted: 01 May 2021 01:25 PM PDT I'd like to know what exactly does having "-A" in "nmap -A 192.168.0.1" mean ? This is for my assignment I'm currently working on and I tried searching for it but was unable to get a proper answer. All the responses were mostly not more than a sentence long. Any help would be appreciated!! [link] [comments] |

Help, I installed Manjaro and now I can’t boot into windows. Posted: 01 May 2021 09:09 AM PDT For starters, I have 3 storage devices: - A 120GB SSD (boot drive for windows) - A 256GB HDD (used for misc files) - A 2TB HDD (used for games and such on my windows machine. I have been wanting to switch to Linux, and I figured the best way would be to sort of dual boot, but with a different hard drive. I used the 256GB one, as it's an older one I ripped out of a dell optiolex machine that was being thrown out. Once I got it installed, I decided I wanted to play some games, so when I went back into bios to change the boot priority, the windows boot loader was replaced with manjaro. I even went into the BBS Hard drive priorities and set it to override the config and boot to my windows install. It failed and booted to Manjaro. I can still see my windows files and install on the SSD via the file manager in Linux. And I have no idea how to setup grub. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 May 2021 07:26 AM PDT so this is my 3rd linux machine (1st was mint, 2nd was Pop, and this is another pop_os machine) and I can NEVER get wine to work properly. on my last machine when i tried to run splinter cell blacklist through it it crashed my whole OS and took out my HDD. Now after trying to get dead rising 2 and batman the tell-tale game to run on Pop_OS, im at my wits end with WINE. It straight up ganked my last install and now I cant get any games to run well. Dead rising's sound in game is abysmal at best (extremely garbled AND tinny) and the batman game wont even run because of a prefix error. I'm trying to get literally ANYTHING to run in wine so I could start to understand how to get it to work but nothing ever does and the documentation is a joke. At this point im seriously considering just purging wine and Lutris and trying using linux to code because im so done with this. Is there anyone else who has these kinds problems on wine? How did you fix them? some specs for context. OS : Pop_os 20.10 MOBO : ASRock B450M PRO CPU : AMD Ryzen 7 2700 8-core GPU : NVIDIA GeForce 2070 super Launcher : Lutris I installed Wine through the Pop Store and install games through Lutris. Normal steamplay games (Tomb Raider is the only 1 ive tried so far) work fine. But im tired of having to switch back and forth between windows to game and linux for my daily driver and my mobo doesnt support amd-v so thats out right there. any help what so ever would be appreciated and im sorry this turned into a rant and a plea for help EDIT: I dont actually think the documentation for wine is a joke. I think that because I've never gotten it run anything well I cant even begin to understand the ins and outs of the documentation and understand anything about how to make it work. This is more a rant about my stupidity that is unfortunately being displayed outward. [link] [comments] |
Can I restore one partition from a whole-drive image? Posted: 01 May 2021 10:45 AM PDT I recently attempted to resize my SSD partitions, and shrinking my Manjaro one seems to have corrupted it (drop to rootfs on boot, fsck says bad superblock). Attempting to fix the partition has seemed rather arduous and fruitless, so far. Just before repartitioning, I used dd to back the whole drive up to an external drive as a .img.gz . Is it possible/safe to restore only the one corrupt partition from the image? Would it be easier to just rewrite the entire drive? Relevant specs: 256 gb SSD—about half Windows 10 (still works), other section Manjaro Linux (originally about half the drive, now maybe 1/3 with free space after, and broken). A couple small Windows-recovery-related partitions at the end (created by default, I never use them) Grub works fine, and am able to boot from live Manjaro disk as needed. Currently running fsck on broken partition, and answering yes to all the block writing errors, as I have read may help, but growing impatient. EDIT: Consensus is no, it's not that easy. As long as getting all my data back is just a matter of reinstalling and pulling it from the backup, I suppose this is resolved. Thanks for the input! [link] [comments] |
Why are my cron jobs not running? Posted: 01 May 2021 03:06 AM PDT I'm relatively new to Ubuntu Server and am trying to set up some rsync and rclone cron jobs to sync and back up my data each night. I've added the following command to my /etc/crontab file: I'd like the root user to run the postgres_backup.sh script every day (except Sunday) at midnight. I've manually tested the script and it runs as expected. I've also used the following command to make it executable: Is there something else I should be doing to automate this process? ls not showing directories I can access via cd Posted: 01 May 2021 06:51 AM PDT Hi, I reinstalled my Linux Mint onto a new drive today. I use ecryptfs for encrypted home directories. I reinstalled from the live boot, then used rsync to copy across the .ecryptfs and .Private folders from my old install to the same place in my new install. However, my home directory is now behaving strangely- if I open a terminal and type `ls -a`, it only shows 4 directories. But if I type `cd dir` where dir is the name of any directory from my old install (not appearing in `ls`), it'll allow me to move into it: https://files.catbox.moe/th59rq.mp4 Similarly, all my installed programs can happily load their configs etc. and Nemo shows files in the 'Recents' that are not visible in the home directory. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks edit: thought to check the system logs; finding a lot of the following: Error attempting to find auth tok for fnek sig [link] [comments] |

Which distro for mini pc (partaker p6) Posted: 01 May 2021 09:43 AM PDT What's up everybody. Got sick of the android tv. So I bought a mini pc partaker p6 it has a celeron j1900 cpu, 8gb ddr3 1600 memory, and 256gb ssd hard drive. Looking to run mame (old games) and consoles up to snes. And any media player will do. What distro would you guys suggest? I use mint linux right now with Xfce desktop which I really like but I thought maybe too much os for this mini pc. Any suggestions would be great help.
